#1 of Merces Letifer

The first in the Merces Letifer series leading up to Desperate Measures.

Silver sneaks into a secret prison to rescue enemy spy, Svietlana Navratilova.

"So let me get this straight,"

Hearing his handler's voice, the white wolf with blue markings looked up from the firearm he'd been cleaning; making eye contact with the dark furred, mix breed canine. He didn't reply verbally, but the look he gave her spoke volumes.

"We are going to be flying into a no-fly zone based in a country with a government that hates our guts, so that you can parachute into a secret prison run by said government so you can rescue a Yugoslavian spy who, if reports are to be believed, hates your guts and has threatened to kill you on sight a number of times. That sound about right?"

Again the wolf didn't reply verbally, instead he settled on rolling his eyes and going back to the task at hand, fingers expertly moving over the Sig Sauer P229. His handler watched him for a few moments longer, before moving to sit across from him. The low hum of the aircraft changed pitch slightly as the pilot navigated the craft just under the range of the enemy's radar capabilities.

"You do realize this mission is suicide, right?"

Pulling the slide back on the reassembled pistol, the wolf tucked it away in the tactical holster attached to his leg. He reached for the multi-tool attached to his vest, pulling it open for the screwdriver, and used it to tighten the straps on his gear. After a moment he let out a sigh, looking back up at his handler. "You talk too much, Kellic."

"You'll excuse me if I'm trying to figure out what's going on inside the head of one of my best agents. It isn't everyday that someone wants to airdrop themselves into hostile territory to rescue someone who wants them dead, Silver. Care to give me some insight here?"

Folding his arms over his chest and leaning back against the seat, Silver eyed his boss for a moment. "She has information on soft targets that would prove useful to us."

"That would could easily get from elsewhere. They're soft targets for a reason, Silver." Kellic cut him off, ignoring the annoyed glare he threw her way. "Try again."

"Honestly? It's professional courtesy." Silver replied after a moment, watching as Kellic raised an eyebrow at him.

"Professional courtesy?" She echoed, leaning forward. "We're in the Lethal Trade, Silver. Merces Letifer. There is no professional courtesy here and you know that."

"Consider this a good will mission. She had me in her sights when I was on that Op in Myanmar. Dead to rights and yet she didn't take the shot. She had the kill order and everything. Now why didn't she take that shot?"

"I have no idea. Honestly? You spies are confusing as all hell."

Again, Silver rolled his eyes, leaning forward to match Kellic's gaze. "It's about respect, Kellic. She didn't want to kill me from half a mile away, looking at me down a magnified scope. There's no honor in it. She wanted to get up close and personal, give me a fighting chance, and once and for all prove which of us actually is superior."

Kellic fought to keep balance as the plane banked heavily, silently irritated when Silver hadn't even budged. "So it's a pissing match. Great."

"Call it what you will. But you know what? She gave me that chance and I'm willing to bet that's how she ended up in that prison. Her bosses weren't happy that she had their number one kill order in her sights and just let him walk. In all likelihood, they handed her over to these guys."

"So it's an overdeveloped sense of guilt." Kellic concluded. She tapped her fingers on the table in front of her. "Who's to say that spy won't shoot you in the back as soon as she's free?"

Silver looked up as the red light by the cargo door started flashing, signalling that they were approaching the drop zone. "Only one way to find out!" He called as the cargo bay door began to open.

Moving to stand by it, Silver looked out onto the sea below, the moon's pale light reflecting off the deceptively calm surface. He checked to make sure everything was secured before pulling on the diving gear, the heavy rebreathing unit adding to the already heavy weight of his kit.

"Remember!" Kellic's voice came over his earpiece, causing him to look over his shoulder at her. "Your primary ex-fil location is twenty miles away. You need to be there by noon tomorrow with no tail. We're not supposed to be here, so if you fuck this up there's no cavalry coming to your rescue. Understood?"

Silver's affirmative reply was conveyed by a middle finger raised high into the air, ignoring the indignant sigh of his boss as the red light flashed green. Then without a second though the wolf ran down the ramp and jumped from the plane.

This was the hardest part. Pulling the chute too soon would allow him to safety glide to a stop, but would make him vulnerable to enemy detection; but pulling it too late would cause him to hit the water at terminal velocity, which would snap his spine. The key was to find that sweet spot. Sure, it was gonna hurt like hell; but what didn't hurt, didn't work.

Gasping the release lever of his parachute in one hand and the cutaway in another, Silver watched as the sea below came rushing towards him. Taking a deep breath, he released his chute, the speed at this the wind filled the device causing it to jerk harshly against his body. Having slowed his descent enough to not kill him when he hit the water, he pulled the cutaway handle; causing the chute to fall away and him to freefall for the last few feet, into the sea below.

Hitting the water still knocked the air from his lungs but it didn't kill him. He quickly shook off the pain and settled his scuba gear into place, before he started swimming towards shore. He kept under the water until he reached the rock wall that was the bluffs on the perimeter of the prison, and surveyed the area as best he could before pulling himself onto the wall and out of the water. Taking a moment to compose himself he began the climb up, using the steel hooks on his boots and gloves to keep himself from falling away.

Ignoring the pain in his muscles from the weight of all the excess gear he had, the wolf climbed the vertical rock face slowly and steadily, and finally managed to make it to the top. Taking a moment to make sure no one was nearby, he pulled himself up fully onto the ground, then knelt as he shed the excess gear.

It wasn't as dark as he would've liked, as the crescent moon provided a feather soft light to the area all around him, but he kept his head on a swivel as he resettled the rest of his provisions. Then kicking the discarded equipment over the edge of the cliff and into the water below, Silver brought the short barreled SBR Tactical rifle up to bear. He grasped the weapon tightly in his hands and scanned the area before making a beeline for what appeared to be a burnt-out guard shack.

After having cleared the structure the operator took a moment to check his map, the soft glow of his PDA nearly undetectable as he looked over the image on the screen. He had infiltrated exactly where he had planned to, but that was the easy part. From here he would have to climb the prison wall in order to gain access to the central control tower. Then from there he would be able to open some cells on the other side of the prison, thus drawing guards there and away from where he was going to be.

The plan sounded good in theory, but the seasoned veteran knew that even the best laid plans didn't always survive the field, and reassuringly the wolf's fingers brushed against the pocket in which he had stored some high explosives. When... not if, when... things went fubar, that was his exit plan.

Hopefully, he would be able to sneak out with his target and get away to the nearest tourist city. Then a change of clothes and some forged documents would get them out of the country and back into friendly hands. Granted, all that was based upon the person he was rescuing not trying to kill him in the process.

Closing the map out he put the PDA back in it's holder, and raising his rifle he headed back outside, moving slowly towards his objective. He didn't want an unaccounted for guard raising an alarm, or even one of the guys from the tower to take a shot at him before he had spotted them. The only thing he liked less than breaking into the prison was the idea of never being able to get back out. Then again, that would prove to be the only motivation he needed to not be taken alive.

Taking a moment again to scan the area around him carefully, the wolf crouched down and removed an optics unit from his pack and switched it to infrared before bringing it up to his eye and checking around for any trace of heat signatures. The ground was cold and stark black within the sight of the scope, and didn't show any signs of having recently been walked on, so he quickly shifted his view to the prison he took count of the guards.

Three were patrolling the exterior wall and two more were up in the tower above them, attached to the exterior wall. Unfortunately for him, the scope wasn't powerful enough to penetrate within the prison's thick walls, but he would worry about that later.

Making sure his gear was secured one last time he focused his attention on the guards up in the tower. They were talking amongst themselves and weren't paying attention to anything going on around them. With this in mind, Silver took the risky opportunity to clear more ground quickly. He broke into a jog, making a run towards the wall. The patrolling guards had turned the corner by the time he was halfway there. When he got a little closer he dropped to a knee again, taking the scope out and looking up at the guards in the tower.

Any noise he may have made clearly hadn't attracted their attention, and by the looks of it one of them had actually dozed off with his feet up on the table, while the other was watching a small TV facing away from the wall he was near. This made Silver grin. Perhaps he'd be able to scale the wall without killing anyone after all. The trick would be getting up and over the wall before the patrolling guards returned.

Pulling the scaling hook from his pack he attached the clip to the climbing rope he had brought with him, then breaking into another run he threw the hook high as he approached. Hearing the satisfying sound of the hook latching onto the wall the wolf pressed his back to it, scanning the area again before pulling hard on the rope to make sure it wouldn't come down while he was climbing. Satisfied it was fully secured he braced himself on the wall and began to climb, successfully making it onto the ledge above before the patrolling guards returned.

This was the toughest part. The only way to get from where he was to the central tower was by entering the top level of the prison, and using the catwalks to get to a utility maintenance shaft that would take him into the tower. Securing his rifle, the wolf retrieved the silenced Walther P22 from the small of his back. It wasn't as powerful as his other pistol but it didn't need to be. Gripping the weapon tightly, Silver opened the nearest door and let out a breath, as he realized that the intel was right and the door wasn't alarmed. It didn't surprise him, even though this was a secret prison the outer defenses weren't meant to be as strong as the interior ones. They were more worried about people trying to break out than people trying to sneak in.

Silver was pulled from his thoughts by the sound of a door down the hall from him opening and closing. He quickly pressed his back against the wall, hoping the dimly lit hallway would hide him until the last possible moment. Much to his relief the guard had gone in the other direction, but it would be another minute or two before Silver would find the hatch he needed to get into the maintenance areas. Using his multi-tool to open the door, he closed it quietly behind him again. The area was pitch black, a sign that not only was it unpatrolled, but the maintenance crew hadn't arrived for their shifts yet.

If his intel was right, the maintenance areas were all connected by tight pathways and ladders that would lead to other floors. These doors were secured with standard prison locks, but Silver's multi-tool was designed to bypass that. Recalling what he had studied before the start of the mission, he switched to the night vision option on his scope to make his way down the tight passageway.

It took a little bit, but eventually Silver found the ladder he was looking for. It would come up to a small area just below the main tower that housed all the wiring and networking cables for the tower. This would be the hard part. The tower was staffed by three guards and he would have to gain entry and take out all three without raising alarm.

Finding the screws for the maintenance hatch, Silver began to undo them one by one, before taking a deep breath as he used his optic to see what the guards were doing. There was one guard to the immediate left of the hatch and two more at consoles on the other side of the room, all of them facing away from him. Slowly opening the hatch he crawled up and out, not bothering to close it as he came up behind the first guard, clasping his hand over the guards mouth and pulling him back against his chest, before bringing his weapon wielding hand up over the guards shoulder.

The silence pistol spoke twice, ensuring that the other two guards wouldn't be a problem. The third guard struggled against Silver's grasp as the wolf applied pressure to his neck, crushing his windpipe. Holstering the silenced pistol, the wolf pulled his PDA back out, setting it down next to the security console. He tapped a few keys on it, the device connecting to the prison's network and forcing it's way in so that Silver had access to the controls.

He glanced at the overhead monitors, reading off the cell blocks to himself and quickly located his target in Cell Block D. It was on the same side of the facility as C, with Blocks A and B on the opposite side of the courtyard. Finding the switches the would unlock the cells the latter two, the wolf ran his fingers down the row, opening every last cell inside the block, and beginning a hefty little distraction to help his plan come to fruition.

Grabbing his PDA, Silver made a run for the stairs just as the alarms went off. He snagged a radio and keycard from a downed guard, before disappearing back into the maintenance tunnels. He could hear the guard's panicked shouting over the radio. What had been a quiet and uneventful night had suddenly turned into a fight for their lives as the prisoners they had beat and tortured were suddenly roaming the halls freely.

Silver managed to make it into Block D, the hatch he opened dropping him onto the third floor catwalk. Bringing his rifle up, the wolf swept the immediate area before pulling out his PDA again. Block D was the highest security block on site, it housed violent offenders and people the government didn't want found. This isn't to say that his target wasn't violent, the truth was she was just as violent and deadly as he was, but she was by no means a loose cannon.

A scan of the area revealed that only five people were currently housed in the block. Four of them on the first floor, and one on the second. The lone person on the second floor was his best bet. They likely would've kept her away from the others in a type of solitary confinement. Silver quietly made his way to the stairwell and down onto the second floor. He could still hear the sounds of the guards in the other blocks calling for help, and guards from Blocks C and D responding to that call. This was just as he had planned. With everyone running to help stop the riot only minimal guards would be present in Block D.

Making his way down to the second floor, Silver scanned the hallway from the doorway before entering into the area. Since the only access point to the building was on the first floor, it would appear most of the guards had been concentrated down there. This worked in Silver's favor as he quietly made his way down the hall, stopping in front of the cell that he was looking for. He looked in through the window to see the figure of the one he was seeking bound to a chair and facing away from him.

Silver grinned slightly as he wondered what her reaction would be to being rescued by him of all people. Using the stolen keycard, he opened the door and stuck a prop in it to keep it from closing behind him. She didn't respond to the sound of the door, nor the sound of him stepping inside. Silver felt the grin leave his face as he eyed the prisoner.

The last time he had seen the vixen her fur had been a bright golden brown, her white markings were a vibrant cream, and her tail had been silky and well maintained. But now... the colors were faded, and her fur was matted and frayed with patches missing. Parts of her were stained dark brown, dried blood by Silver's educated guess, and the splint on her left leg a sign that they may have broken it at some point. At one time the Slavic spy had been a force to be reckoned with, but now she seemed battered and broken.

It wasn't right, and Silver could only imagine the things they had done to break her down. The wolf bit his lower lip as he looked her over. This wasn't a way for a proud warrior to spend her days. Even if she was his enemy at one time, he still respected her enough that seeing her like this hurt.

He took a breath before shouldering his rifle. "Svietlana?" He said questioningly, taking a step forward but still leaving enough distance between them in case she was acting. "Svietlana Navratilova?" He asked, seeing that her hands were bound tightly behind her back. For the first time he noticed the IV line running from her wrist to a bag over her head. Using his PDA to figure it what was in it, he realized they had been sedating her. He moved around to stand in front of her, kneeling down and lifting her chin with his hand.

She was awake, but barely aware of what was going on. He spotted the recognition in her eyes followed immediately by contempt and shame. "I know who you are." The Yugoslavian spoke for the first time, the words being forced through the haze of the sedative in her veins. "They sent you to kill me, didn't they?"

Silver shook his head as he moved back behind her, carefully pulling the IV line from her arm before checking the hallway to make sure they were still alone. After a moment he kneeled down in front of her again, checking the splint on her leg to see how badly her leg wasn't broken. "No, I'm not."

"You americans are horrible liars." She spat, "You're here to kill me before I talk."

Again Silver shook his head, pulling off his pack and searching it for a moment before his hand reappeared with an epi-pen. The vixen's eyes went wide for a moment as Silver jammed the pen into her leg. She let out a gasp of pain as the large spring-loaded needle injected adrenalin into her system to counteract the sedatives. "What are you doing?" She asked after a moment, watching the wolf curiously as he inspected her wounds.

"I'm getting you out." He replied simply, like his plan was to calmly stroll out the front door. Svietlana blinked as she felt her body come alive, immediately feeling the effects of the "advanced interrogation techniques" that had been used on her. She let out a growl of pain as the wolf poked and prodded. "Anything broken?" He asked, rolling his eyes when he realized she was still staring at him. "Hey! Wake up! We don't have a lot of time. Can you move?"

Coming back to reality, The vixen nodded as she struggled against the binds of the chair. "Yes, I can. I don't get it. Why would you of all people want to get me out of here? Last time I saw you I tried to kill you!"

"Look, I know we have a score to settle and all, but the fact is that I'm pretty sure you're in here because you didn't take the shot last time you had it. And you know what? I've got too much respect for you to have you waste away in here." Silver stated, using his utility knife to cut away the restraints. Immediately he found himself on his back as the vixen pushed him away, taking his knife from him in the process, and taking up a stance like she was about to throw it at him. The wolf already had his sidearm drawn with it pointed at her chest; there was a brief, tense moment as the two squared off.

"You didn't take the shot." Svietlana said, slightly bewildered that she was even still alive.

"I told you," Silver growled, getting back to his feet. "I'm here to get you out. If I wanted you dead I could've just picked you off from the doorway. Now are you done playing games?" He scolded her, holding his hand out to take his knife back.

The vixen scoffed, handing it over and watching as he tucked it away. "Well? What now, Super Spy? What's your escape plan?"

"We shoot our way out of here." Silver replied, pointing to the wall of her cell. "From there we'll make a run for the employee parking lot where we'll steal a car and take it to the next town and then we'll find a way to make it over into the city. Once in the city we can ex-fil."

"That's crazy. We're both going to end up dead." Svietlana sighed, pressing her back to the wall when Silver did, hearing the sound of a guard entering the hallway.

The wolf didn't reply as he listened to the guard approach the propped open door. Silver moved to stand in front of it, waiting until the guard had placed his hand on it before slamming his foot into the door, sending the door flying open and the guard onto his back. His silenced rifle reported three times, ensuring the guard would stay down. "Now would be a good time to move." Silver called over his shoulder, running down the hall.

Svietlana followed as best she could, trying everything to ignore the pain that each step brought her. Silver stopped at the stairwell, pulling the Sig 229 from it's holster and handing it to her. The former Russian spy accepted the weapon, pulling the slide back and checking the magazine before whispering to him. "You really trust me that much, eh?"

"If I'm wrong, I'm dead either way." He replied, making his way down the stairs and onto the first floor. He wasn't concerned about noise anymore since it was only a matter of time until the guards discovered what was going on. Kicking in the door on the first level, Silver made entry and quickly fired at the guards who were present. They ran down the hall to the door that would lead them outside. "The employee lot is right outside these doors. Expect to be fired upon. I'll cover you while you hotwire the car. Sound good?" Silver asked, looking over his shoulder long enough for Svietlana to nod before he opened the door.

"Silver sedan!" Svietlana called out as they ran outside, already making a run for the driver side door. Luckily it was unlocked so she quickly pulled it open and ducked under the steering column. The first shot came from one of the guards in the tower that Silver had passed when he breached the exterior wall. It would appear that the guards were awake and paying attention now.

The wolf returned fire, striking one guard in the chest, the other in the leg, and both fell out of view as Silver turned and began to fire on the guards coming out of Block C. "Any time now!" He called out, letting out a sigh of relief as he heard the engine roar to life. He got in the car just as Svietlana slammed her door shut, throwing the vehicle in drive and slamming the gas pedal to the floor.

They barrelled out of the parking lot, heading for the security gate, and at the last minute Svietlana slammed the brakes. Silver leaping out of the car before it even came to a full stop, pulling an explosive charge from his vest and threw the device at the gate. It exploded on contact, leaving a large enough hole for them to drive through. Svietlana slammed the gas again just as Silver got back in the car, the vehicle exploding through the hole and onto the dirt road.

"Fuck. Keep it steady!" Silver shouted as bullets pinged the back bumper and shattered the tail lights. The wolf steadied himself on the seat as he turned around, returning fire out the back window. The wolf let out a yelp and winced as he felt himself take a round in the shoulder. Ignoring Svietlana's call of "what happened?" the wolf kept returning fire until the prison was out of sight. Turning back around in his seat and sucking in a breath from the pain, the wolf pressed his hand hard against his shoulder, feeling the blood seep through his fingers.

"Fuck, you're hit." Svietlana said, looking over at him.

"Eyes on the road before you kill us both." Silver scolded, reaching into his pack for the medical kit. "I'll be fine." He said, pressing the fresh gauze to his wound, feeling the blood soak through it quickly. He let out a groan as he dug his fingers in deeper to try and stop the bleeding, feeling himself starting to black out from the blood loss.

"I've seen that wound before, Silver. We need to stop and treat it properly." The vixen countered, looking over when he hadn't replied, she saw the wolf passed out in the passenger seat. "Idiot." She huffed before slamming the brakes and pulling off to the side of the road, she got out of the driver's side and walked around to the passenger side, opening the door and laying his seat back less than gently. She quickly applied Styptic to the wound, waiting only long enough to watch the hemorrhaging vessels begin to close, before packing the area with gauze to catch the now stemming tide of blood.

She checked his pulse after a few minutes to ensure he was alive, and let out a sigh of relief when his pulse was strong. The wolf would survive after all. She watched him for a moment, taking the pistol he had given her and holding it to his forehead, her mind focused on how easy it would be to kill him right now and escape. And yet, she couldn't bring herself to pull the trigger.

He was right, she had been sent to that prison because she had refused to kill him the last time she had him in her scope, and yet instead of just leaving her to rot there he had come for her. What's more, he had treated her with trust and respect even though they were enemies. People like that were a rare sight in her industry, usually because they ended up dead.

Letting out a growl the vixen slammed the door shut, before getting back into the driver's seat. She looked over at the sleeping agent again with a sigh, rolling her eyes as she put the car in drive and heading down the road.

Silver awoke several hours later, to find himself in a nice hotel room, laying on a comfortable bed. His tactical gear had been removed and his shoulder was bandaged up with care. He shifted slightly, his muscles stiff from the night's activities. A glance under the covers revealed that he had been stripped to his boxers. For the first time he realized it was daylight out, and a glance at the clock on the bed stand confirmed that it was just shy of ten in the morning.

He became more alert as he heard the sound of the shower shutting off, his eyes turning towards the door, and in only a moment he was greeted with the sight of a naked vixen strolling into the room as she toweled herself off.

She glanced over at him and rolled her eyes when she realized he was watching. "You know, I almost forgot what a hot shower felt like." She sighed as she pulled on one of the robes, sitting on his bed. She eyed him for a moment before laughing softly. "I didn't peek if that's what you're wondering." She started before rolling her shoulders, sighing comfortably. "I suppose I owe you a thank you, don't I?"

"Think nothing of it." Silver said, sitting up and wincing as pain shot through his shoulder. "Professional courtesy. That's all." He said, watching as the vixen raised an eyebrow.

"Professional courtesy? This was a bit more than that, don't you think? I didn't exactly see any other spies breaking in there to get me out. I owe you my life, wolf. As much as I hate to admit it."

"It would appear that goes both ways." Silver chuckled, eyeing the badges on his shoulder before looking back at her. "You're a warrior, Svietlana. One that I have respect for. Both as a spy and as a fighter. So yes, I didn't like the idea of you wasting away in some secret prison."

"Well then, Wolf. For getting me out of there and saving me from even more torture and eventually being killed, it would appear that I'm in your debt." The vixen grinned, placing a kiss on his nose before getting up and getting herself a cup of coffee from the machine in the corner of the room. "So what next?" She asked, turning around to face him.

For the first time Silver noted that her fur was back to it's golden color, and while it would be awhile before it was back to it's original luster, the process had already begun. "My bosses have agreed to grant you asylum in the States. Since it's obvious that your handlers don't want you anymore. I figured that it wasn't a bad deal. You'd be given a new identity and the paperwork to back it."

"I appreciate the offer, but I'm afraid I must decline." Svietlana said softly, taking a sip of the hot liquid in her hands. "I couldn't live a civilian life. Not after all I've been through."

"So then join me?" Silver asked, the words leaving his mouth before his brain had even realized it. Biting his lip for a moment, the wolf pressed on. "Join up with me. You don't have to work with the agency, but you could work with just me. Even pick which assignments of mine you want to be on. It would get you away from your handlers but keep you out of civilian life."

Svietlana regarded him for a moment. "And I could come and go as I please? I wouldn't have to worry about you kicking my door down again, would I?"

"Only if you end up in another secret prison." Silver shot back, earning a grin from the vixen as she moved to sit on his bed again.

She thought for another moment, before smirking at him over the lip of her coffee cup. "I do believe you have yourself a deal, wolf."
