Madness?

Story by John Eweans on SoFurry

John sat on the couch and silently read a book to himself while Ganta sat at another desk doing the same. While the two always didn't get along, they had a shared trait of keeping themselves buried in a book if they didn't want to interact with each other. Although most of the time it was only until John wanted something that they'd stop, this day though it was Ganta.

"Humans are sad corruptions upon the Earth." Never looking up but simple throwing the idea out there, likely because it was something he was reading.

John looked up at him and sighed. "But they are interesting eh? I find it fun how the gods they follow in a petty manner are more human than them... What are you reading?"

Ganta lowly spoke. "An anatomy book..."

John cracked a smile and announced. "I'm reading Greek mythology, why are you nose deep in an anatomy book?"

Ganta grumbled and turned his head back and continued reading, John couldn't help but get up and peer over Ganta's shoulder; Ganta tried to ignore him but it was hard. John reached his hand down and activity corrected the book. "They named the phalanges bones wrong... They are not a single bone but rather multiple bones." Ganta, regardless of how he hated John, did however enjoy having the other knowledge sponge around for this reason. Ganta carefully listened to each thing he pointed out and John was having fun just being a smart-ass over the book. John suddenly stopped and once again asked why he was reading it. Ganta paused then started to reply to the persistent fellow.

"I'm reading an anatomy book because I wish to learn the most effective way of killing someone." He sarcastically said.

John chuckled and slightly ruffled his hair. "Right, right totally dear Ganta... I honestly wouldn't have doubted that for a second if it wasn't for that tone of voice... so, what's the real reason? Are you so flushed over my personality you wish to figure out enough about the body to pleasure--"

Before John could finish his egotistic joke, Ganta got up and moved away from him, fully aware of where that kind of talk ends up going in John's mind. John, to his surprise, just shrugged it off and went back to his book. Ganta nearly asked why he stopped persisting but bite his tongue and didn't, a better question now was why did he care? Ganta scolded himself for beginning to feel a bond for John, then even more for wallowing in it. As if everything suddenly got deep for Ganta, John just watched him over the edge of the book, watching him make odd faces at himself unconsciously he guessed. John hid his smile with the book but soon enough playfully talked to Ganta.

"Evaluating life there big shot?"

Ganta didn't reply, John repeated himself in a louder voice and Ganta snapped back into reality and quickly turned his head towards the other. John closed the book he was reader and put it down, walking over to Ganta to give a reassuring pat on the back, before John could speak though, Ganta pushed him off. John wasn't fazed and made a quick remark on the action.

"You're so sensitive you know?" John stopped to see if Ganta would do something rash at the comment, but he didn't so he continued. "It's rather refreshing to know such a hot-head can be docile too... Don't over think whatever is going through your head okay?"

"I don't need you..."

"Pfft please... Don't be dense, I'm not blind. You progressively ease up on me, if I didn't know any better I'd say I'm moving up from rival to friend, maybe more."

Ganta yet again internally scolded himself, more like reassuring himself that John was wrong. Damn it Matthew he thought to himself... made it no better that John was the counter part to the love interest... yeah that's it, Ganta himself doesn't like John at all, it's all Matthew's and Jessica's fault! While Ganta thought, John decided to latch onto him and hug him. Ganta, as soon as he felt arms around him, instinctively pushed and knocked over John. John fell back and crashed into the glass coffee table, tipping it over and having a stack of books fall upon him. Ganta snickered at the grimace face John made. John barked at him for it.

"If you're not going think about me, could you at least think about the nice features we have in this house? Like, let's not break the furniture" John groaned and muttered something back. "I don't see a good future for Sofa-bed while you loom."

Ganta made an odd barking sound as a result of once more starting then holding back something he was going to say. Was John also in the same mind set as Ganta? John dragged himself up and picked up the fallen table and books before turning on a heel and seldom stroking his chin.

"You're deep in thought again Ganta... Literally, what's up?"

John had one of the most serious looking faces about him; Ganta slowly nodded and spoke out.

"I am changing... For better or worse I cannot say. You are not completely wrong when you say you're climbing up my affection ladder... What you muttered, what does that imply?"

"Ah-ha I know what's going on. I said you're not good for Jess... and it would be a damn shame if you poked your ugly head into the personality of the boy you watch. You and I together can get along fine, but it would be drastic if the four of us crossed. I would easily over whelm the boy, and Jess wouldn't tolerate your shit, I mean she might but she'll either get depressed or pissed all the time."

"You're making connections again, I hate that."

"But it's true... Think about it. They're trapped in a partnership, forcing us to reflect off of it, whether we like it or not."

"Normally I wouldn't care, but your wording makes it sound like the relationship is a bad thing for them."

"Heh..." John stopped and turned his head. "I'm jealous... Don't forget Ganta, my reason of creation was to fill that void... Now it's taken by someone I can't compete with, and living being."

Ganta would of insulted John on the spot for that let out, but very well he'd just strike back with 'you're falling for me' or something of that nature.

"Mutual hatred and love between all of us."

"Pros and cons indeed, shame because you and I have the bad end of the stick it would seem..." The two got silent again for a longer time. They sat beside each other on the couch and didn't speak for a good two hours, they did nothing but think over what all was going on. John's voice cracked as he broke the silence.

"I'm worried; I'm worried I might disappear... It's been fought off before but it's nothing but a delay. I'll be nothing but a simply paper character to her, no longer part of her mind but just an idea she's holding onto because I have a 'plot' and I'm in-depth. ... I knew it would happen sooner or later I just didn't think I would be so split on it, I don't accept my fate yet at the same time I wish her best and--" Ganta covered John's mouth with his hand and softly said "Shut up." John at this point actually sobbed as he pulled Ganta's hand off. He held his breath and tried to re-collect himself before saying anything else. However Ganta knew he wouldn't, his point was made, and all John was doing now was simply looking for comfort. Ganta pondered giving it to him but didn't, he got up off and couch and walked to the door, not looking back and in an emotionless voice said a final sentence to John.

"You really believe you'll disappear? Don't be a fool, I'll make sure she'll need you; don't worry." Ganta left to have a short break down himself.

John, maybe over thinking, thought of that sentence as caring for him actually... But unsteady for Jess... John spoke to himself. "Don't worry John, I'll make Matthew so fucked, Jess will need me once she breaks." He had a long sigh of mental discomfort, damn.
