Wings of Darkness
#1 of Poems
This is a poem I wrote about dragons. In the world I've created there are dragons based on all the elements as well as dragons of gold, silver, bronze, iron, etc. This poem is about the shadow or black variant. They are despised by humans and looked down upon by the other elemental dragons as well. Only now the tables have turned and all the other elemental dragons have abandoned mankind due to their violence and greed. War's have broken out and people desperately turn to those shadow dragons they once despised. Begging them for help and protection. In turn the shadow dragons sneer at the hypocrisy of humans and ask where their great protectors are now.
Wings of Darkness
Soaring wings of darkness
mighty rulers of the night.
Master of the skies and symbol
of what they all despise.
Slipping through the shadows
and disappearing again like smoke.
Dancing like the wind under the
glowing light of the moon.
Pay no heed to the tales they tell
of liars cloaked in shadow.
They fear what they do not know.
Let them hide and let them wallow.
Let them wallow in their fear.
Let them scurry to their homes.
Let them cower away from the shadows
while terror shakes their bones.
Wings borne beneath the stars
are not touched by fear.
Nor by the twisted tales of men
that fall on listening ears.
All have gone but those you hate so much.
Now only the shadows are left behind.
Where is your protection now?
Where are the gold and silver kings
you held in such great high esteem?
Where are the bronze and iron knights?
Who fought the shadows and banished the night?
Where are those dragons red who once
warmed your villages with fire?
Or the great sea serpents of water
who protected your ships
from danger most dire?
Where is the lightning that flashed across the sky?
Where are the mighty wraiths of ice who
sheltered you with watchful eyes?
Where is the wind that blew through the trees?
And sang such beautiful songs to
put your hearts at ease?
They did not die they left you alone.
Cold and abandoned to your fate.
Lonely and lost they left you
because of your greed and hate.
Now you turn to us for help?
Those dragons you despise?
Now you pray to us for salvation
where before you cursed us with lies?
Oh how great the irony this is!
Now only the shadows can banish the dark.
But can we banish the evil intent
that lies in human hearts?
