#4 of The Struggle of Two

Alfred is trying to persuade his parents so he can go on a trip with Arthur to one of the other three countries of Darvan

He sat there on the bed and felt a bit nervous, took his time waking up from a confusing dream. After he rubbed his eyes with both of his hands and sighed he stood up and went to the bathroom where there was a bowl of cold water which he filled the day before. He washed his face, felt it as refreshing, and looked at the mirror while his hands took on the edges of the bowl table; his look was beautiful because of the snow white and fluffy fur just as white as Arthur's fur. He alternately looked at his blue eye and light greyish eye and said to himself:

"I have to persuade my parents so... I can go with Arthur maybe to Denland or Varen or maybe even... Arndor, the Land of Empires" The last few days he read about the other countries and realized that the histories, monuments and attractions across the countries were really interesting and fascinating, what he never really knew about, which just made him more eager to go with Arthur and more nervous about persuading his parents to allow him to go to the trip. As he brainstormed how to convince his parents he clumsy took his clothes on and went to the diner room to prepare the breakfast for his family. It was important to make his parents to feel comforted and relaxed to maximize the chances to persuade them even though they knew something is up when he was extra nice and so on. As he was about to finish the table he heard footsteps from downstairs. "Morning, sweetheart" said his mom Feline. "Good morning, mom" answered Alfred as he sliced the bread "What about dad?" "Still trying to wake up but he'll come" Feline sat down on the chair and waited for the bread and continued "So you have something up in your sleeve, huh?" "Ehm... yeah and it's quite big this time" He brought the bread to the table and sat down opposite of his mom. "Then you better be very nice to us, sweetheart. So what is it about this time?" "I'll tell later today when I've done much more than this" Alfred smiled and felt cryptic. "Big plans, I see" said his dad suddenly out of nowhere and entered the diner room. "I'm willing to make an agreement on works at home if necessary" he added and started to eat. The breakfast went as if it was normal but where he cleaned up afterwards. Then he took care of his parents' bed, made it tidy and nice, and took the laundry to dry it inside right after as he eventually made himself ready to the school while he nervously wagged his tail slowly side to side. As he was about to take off to school his mom said to him: "So you are even willing to make a deal with us about work at home to achieve your goal?" she said as she leaned against the door frame. "Yes, mom, this time it's something big and a bit important to me" he was taking his coat on. "Can you give us a hint what it might be?" she said as she took the school bag for her son. "It's... about a trip" he said nervously and held his ears pointy and stiff. "Ah" she then asked for a farewell kiss for the first time since ages. "Mom... I'm seventeenth" as he received the kiss reluctantly. "Yeah, but you are still my little son" as he was about to go out of the door she said finally "You'll always be loved by us, sweetheart, and we'll do our best to make you feel well and all you have to give in return is love as well" "Yes, bye mom" he held his hand as a sign for departure. "Bye"

The winter had turned the whole land of Melren to a beautiful landscape covered in magical-looking snow. The mountains from the distance, which tried to reach to the highest of the sky, looked fairly in bright blue, grey and white and this day was wind still and snowing. Even though Alfred walked through the snow he didn't feel the cold as much as the other days and took it as a good sign. He was eager to see his friends and contribute to the lessons but he was more eager to see Arthur; to hear what he had to say about the cost of the trip among other things. After he exited the ridiculous large area, which was the area where his society lived, he walked slower to enjoy the sight of the winter; some of the trees looked like branches covered in sweetest glaze and some candy floss. It gave him the idea to buy some pastry from the local baker Tim to his parents. It was not any pastry; a pastry made of five smaller, heart formed pastry which together looked like a star where each heart pastry had heart formed bottom filled with cr竪me. If he's lucky he could also get the star pastry a bit covered in chocolate glaze. It would be a bit expensive since decorative and delicious products were rare at the outer provinces of Melren but compared to a trip to one of the three other countries of the continent Darvan with his crush that was nothing. But something did bothered Alfred and it was about being absent from school if they were to go to a trip. As he wondered a familiar voice said out of nowhere: "Hey, Butler, wait up!" Alfred lifted his invincible eyebrows up by surprise and looked back. His stomach caught a butterfly. "Hey, King," he replied as he stopped and brightened up "what are you doing here?" Arthur usually wasn't at these parts of town so Alfred tried to guess why he was here, one thought said Arthur could be here because he overnighted at Tina's home, his girlfriend, who lived not so far from here. "I just came from my uncle's place" "Your uncle's place?" Arthur's uncle's name was Orvur the Kind and was the headmaster of Arthur's family, was a widower and last but not least leader of the company Fox Fire which was very well known company for trading with gems and jewelry in the southern province of Melren. "Yeah, my uncle took a trip to Evenstad yesterday to do some business and should return today. Meanwhile I took care of Enva and Christen" "Are you fond with kids?" Alfred wanted to know so much as possible about Arthur even if it was something nothing special. "Yeah - we played a lot of games as Nine Men Morris, Ludo, several card and dice games and a bit of chess... sure was fun" Arthur looked quite glad for some reason and Alfred could not resist to get affected by this beautiful polar fox. As they went to school, which was not more than 5 minutes away, they talked about the influence of the gem and Jewel Company had on southern province economically. For reasons Alfred didn't know Arthur didn't bring the subject about trip yet which made Alfred more nervous and a bit anxious. He did enjoy working in groups with Arthur though and in the end he forgot about the trip. The school had slowly begun to decorate to Hollow Night (something similar to Halloween) which was invented for just some years ago from the neighbor country Arndor. It was first at lunch time that Arthur said he wanted to talk to Alfred in the Hall of Beginning. Alfred started: "So what's the deal?" he held his ears and tail stiff to prevent them to show signs of emotions. "It's about the school and the trip" Arthur sat down on the bench right next to the entrance to the Hall of Beginning and gave a sign to Alfred to sit down beside him. "Oh, I forgot it completely..." he felt the nervousness and anxiety return and spontaneously said "Sorry" and sat down. "You don't have to say sorry, silly" Arthur took Alfred's head under his arm and pulled his hair just for fun. "Stop it" as Alfred made himself free he unknowingly laid his ears down of shyness but luckily Arthur didn't notice and continued: "I talked to my uncle and his willing to pay for the trip" "Really?!" he felt the excitement flow through his body and as a result he got goose bumps. "Yeah and I asked my parents to talk to the superintendent and we are allowed to go" Arthur got smitten by Alfred's excitement and smiled "No cost and we can go... just like that?" this was nearly too good to be true for Alfred. "Under one conditions though" Arthur lifted a finger "we have to work on a minor project while we are at the country we visit" "That's just amazing! I mean we can go to a trip... I..." while he was saying that he gesticulated with his arms "but that means that I got this chance at a stake" "What do you mean?" "I...I haven't persuaded my parents yet" Alfred rubbed his back head and looked down at the floor. "Well, this trip with you and me is really important to me, I mean, you are my special friend and one of the closest too so... I'll try to help you with persuading them" Arthur laid an arm on Alfred's back as a sign of support. Alfred knew he was something special for Arthur but he couldn't help himself and blushed, felt the heart beat quickened. He had an urge to lay his head on Arthur's shoulder which could make him more relaxed about the next issue but he contained himself and said: "We should return to the class, King Arthur" he stood up, opened and held the door. "Yeah" replied Arthur and went through the door.

The teacher of the class gave them instructions about the minor project; they had to write about the history of the country they visited and also had to contain about the rises and falls of the Empires of Darvan. There was no doubt which country they had to visit then; Arndor, the Land of Empires.

After the school they went to Moon Paw's local baker Tim who was old but great, both personal and in profession. "Welcome, young ones" said Tim the Baker. His broken whiskers shook as he talked. "Hello, sir" replied Arthur and went closer to the desk. "Oh please, call me Tim young...?" "Name's Arthur, Tim, Arthur the Polar Fox" he bowed a bit. "So you are a friend of Alfred, I suppose?" he was walking from the staff door to the desk. "Yes" "That's understandable. Since you were young, Alfred, you've always been kind and clever" as he went nostalgic he smiled for himself and continued "What can I do for you today, young ones?" "I would like to ask for the Star Pastry, Tim" said Alfred and walked up to the desk. "Plans to please your parents, I see" he took a few steps sideways to stand in front of the display desk where many different of cakes, cookies and pastries were "So which one would it be, Alfred?" "The heart formed, please" "As you wish" as Tim was about to take the pastry out of the display Alfred added: "Could it be a bit covered in chocolate glaze?" "Oh sure, that's not a problem" as he took the pastry out of the display he took few steps backwards to the decoration closet and took a tube out which clearly had the sweet brown color. "And I'll pay it" said Arthur suddenly. "Wha-? Wait, I'll pay..." he was flattered. "I said that I'll help you with persuading your parents so..." Arthur looked at Alfred steadily, smiled and pulled Alfred's hair again. "Alright, then" said Alfred reluctantly and let the fox pay the pastry. "That'll be 15 dars" said Tim while he was packing the Star Pastry in a fine box. "Is it that much?" asked Arthur, Tim nodded and said "They are really delicious in return, my boy" "Okay, here's the dars" he handed the coins and took the box. "Good luck, should I say to both of you?" Alfred nodded "Good luck, you two" Tim smiled back.

From the Moon Paw's local baker it was not far from Alfred's home and they walked a bit faster because the weather was getting colder, it was still beautiful though. Even though they had fur it was cold for Alfred's hands when he carried the box so halfway through the route Arthur took over whom Alfred gratefully thanked and quickly put his paws inside the pockets. As they were some seconds away from the house they noticed that it was dark from inside and when they entered the house Alfred found a note laying on the kitchen table which said: "Dear sweetheart, we went to the shaman Hector to try to clear out if it is a boy or a girl. It will take some time before we go home but we left some works for you and the dinner can be readied. Mom and dad" Alfred took a quick turn with his head side to side and found dishes, laundry, unfinished table and so on. "Looks like we got the house for ourselves, huh?" said Arthur and took a round in the kitchen. "Yeah, but... I'll do the works and you can feel at home" he wanted to please Arthur and make him feel welcome at his place. "What do you mean? Let me see the note" he reached out for the piece of paper and read it and then said "No can do, Alfred, but that won't be fair" he handed the note back. "But..." "No but, I came to help you persuading your parents so I should do my part as well" Arthur went to the dishes and then faced towards Alfred "Now I'll take the dishes and you take whatever you feel for and then we take it from there, right?" "Alright, King" he couldn't resist to obey his words and felt useful for him other than in school. Alfred went to the kettle and began to heat up some water to ready the process for cleansing the laundry. Meanwhile the water was getting heated up he finished the table and took a round in the house to check for other works. While he was walking he felt as he was floating and could do anything and everything. Both did the works enthusiastic and they engulfed each in motivation and the time went fast for both of them. As the day turned darker and darker they lit up the candles and the chimney. The dinner was finished it only needed to be warmed up. Now they only waited for Alfred's parents to return. They discussed which country they should visit if Alfred's parents gave their son the permission to go and to no surprise they agreed to visit the Land of Empire Arndor.

Suddenly they heard two people walking through the soft snow which gave some light sounds of snow cracking. They prepared themselves and they felt confident because they finished all the works in the house. The door opened: "Hello" said a soft voice. "Hey mom" replied Arthur and went closer "and hello dad" "Hello son" "So how did it go?" he felt the nervousness and curiosity grow. "It took a while, son" answered Allan and took his coat off and hang it on the hook "he's old and tired so it took longer than usual" His wife continued: "But we got some great news for you" "And what's that?" Is it a boy or a girl, thought Alfred. "We got twins!" said both his parents at the same time. Alfred's and Arthur's jaws dropped a little. "Twins?!" Alfred couldn't believe what his parents just said. "Yes, and it's both a boy and a girl" Feline rubbed his belly gently and then took her shoes off. "That's... that's just amazing! I don't know what to say" Alfred hugged his mom and his dad. "Who is this lad, son" his dad was the first one to notice Arthur standing on the door frame to the kitchen. "Oh sorry, I'm Arthur and I helped Alfred with the works" he reached his hand out to greet both Feline and Allan. "Alfred told us about you" said Allan and reached out to meet Arthur's hand. "So you're an important friend of our son" said Feline and hung her coat. "Yes, ma'am" they both greeted each other. "We decided while we were going home that we would give what Alfred ask for since this is a great and important day for this family" Allan laid an arm on Alfred's shoulder "So what's your request, son?" "Well... Arthur and I had discussed about the minor project we could get if we were to..." the tension rose "visit one of the other three countries of Darvan" There were an awkward silence in about half minute. "You mean Varen, Denland and Arndor?" asked Feline. "Yes" Feline and Allan exchanged glances and then looked back at Alfred and Arthur. "You have our permission, sweetheart" said Feline and stepped forward. "Wha-?" said Allan surprised. This was one of the greatest moments in his life and for now the sweetest. The joy and happiness flew and it was quite visible on Alfred's and Arthur's face. They both looked at each other and raised their fists as they won a battle. "It's fine Allan, my dear. It's time that our son get to experience something great than just being in this place" "If that's what you mean then it is fine with me too" Allan sighed though. Arthur said to change the subject: "The dinner is ready and there's a Star Pastry to dessert"
