#1 of The Odd One Out

A police car parked in front of an apartment block. A tall, brown, male dog, dressed in police uniform, got out of the car and entered the apartment block. The police officer walked down the hallway towards apartment 13. Someone had called the station earlier reporting loud screaming and crying noises coming from the apartment. The officer reached the apartment door and rung the doorbell.

"Hello, this is the police. We've recently received a complaint of loud noises coming from this apartment. May I ask that whoever lives here open the door so as to discuss the matter."

No answer came from the apartment. The officer rang the doorbell again.

"Hello?"

No answer came from the apartment again. The officer decided to knock on the door. As he knocked the door gently slid open to reveal the apartment living room. Curious, the officer stepped into the apartment and looked around. There was no sign that a struggle or any violence had occurred, also when he checked the apartment door it looked as though it had simply not been shut properly.

"Is there anybody here?" the officer shouted

Yet again there was no answer.

As the officer proceeded to look around, he heard the faint sound of sobbing coming from a door leading off from the living room. The officer slowly approached the door, drawing his gun, and listening out for any struggle. Still only hearing the sobbing he slowly opened the door, pointing the gun in front of him. Once he fully opened the door, he looked into the room.

The room consisted of two beings, an elderly woman who was laying on a bed and a small child who was sitting in the corner of the room. The officer put his gun back in its sheaf and approached the bed. The elderly lady was a black cat with short hair. She lay in the bed motionless. The officer checked the woman's pulse, nothing could be felt from his fingers. The officer sighed and looked at the child.

The child was sitting on the floor with his head in his arms. The officer assumed the child was the one made the noise that was reported. The officer knelt down in front of the child.

"Hey kid, are you alright?" the officer asked

The child didn't reply

"Did you see what happened here?"

Again no reply came from the child. Just as the officer was about give up and radio the station, the child spoke.

"She said she was going to another place."

"Hmm, what did you say?"

"Said she couldn't look after me anymore, said her time had come."

The officer knelt down to the boy again.

"The old lady said that before she died?" the officer asked

"Yes" the child murmured

"Did you see how she died?"

"She just got in the bed a laid there, like she was going to sleep"

The officer got up, took out his radio and spoke into it.

"John, this is Bradford, do you read?"

"Yeah I hear ya, what's the problem?"

"Radio in an ambulance, I've got one casualty and a possible witness"

"What are the details of casualty and witness?"

"Casualty is an elderly women, species is a cat."

"And the child"

The officer looked at the child and knelt down again.

"Could you lift you head for me please?" asked the officer

The child lifted his head and looked the officer in the eye. When the officer saw the child's face he fell back in shock. A voice came from his radio again.

"Bradford, is there something wrong?"

"Human"

"What"

"The witness is a child and it's human"

"Human, seriously?"

"Yes, just call the ambulance in alright"

The officer put his radio back in his pocket and gazed at the human. It was the first time he'd seen one so young. He asked the child a question.

"Kid do you have a name?"

The child looked at the officer

"No" the child replied

The male police officer was now standing outside his superior officer's office. He just got back from accompanying the ambulance to the hospital. A large black bear opened the office door.

"Officer Bradford, come inside." The bear said

The officer followed him in. The bear sat down behind a desk and beckoned the officer to sit down as well. He took out a pack of cigarettes and lit one up.

"You want one?" The bear asked, offering the pack of cigarettes to the officer.

"No thank you sir" The bear took a large puff of the cigarette "There bad for you know"

"What are you, my mother" The bear took another puff of the cigarette "So tell me about this case"

"Well I was checking up on a complaint of screaming coming from the apartment. When I got there the apartment door was open, so I had a look around. Found a male child and an elderly woman there."

"Woman was dead right?"

"Yes sir"

"Doctors say anything about it"

"Well they checked her out and said she didn't have any bruises' or markings, in fact she was pretty healthy. Doctors are saying its likely she died of old age."

"What about the apartment?"

"No signs of struggle or violence"

"Well that's it then, case solved."

"Well not quite sir, there's still the child"

The bear flung a cigarette butt in the bin near his desk and took another one out of his packet.

"Oh yeah the kid." The bear lit up the cigarette "So what about him, any files on him."

"Nothing sir"

"Nothing, no birth date, no relatives?"

"No sir, kid doesn't even have a name."

"Terrific" The bear inhaled deeply from the cigarette "No records, no relatives, Jesus what is this kid, an alien"

"Not quite sir, it's a human"

The bear suddenly coughed up the cigarette in his mouth.

"A human child, flipping heck, haven't seen one of them before" the bear put the cigarette back is his mouth

"The question is sir, what we are going to do with him. He has no records and the women who died seemed to be the only one who was looking after him."

The bear got up and looked out his window.

"Put him a foster home, let them deal with him"

"A foster home!"Officer Bradford answered, shocked "Shouldn't we think about this more. I mean there aren't any human children around anymore, what if he never gets adopted."

"We are police officers, not social workers. It's their problem, not ours."

"But..."

"Listen to me officer. Unless you plan on looking after the kid yourself, you can spare me your sentimental crap" The bear took another puff of the cigarette "Now do you have anything else to report on this case?"

"No sir"

"Good, now please leave my office."

The officer got up and left the office. He felt sorry for the child, with no other humans around in this area, the child must feel very lonely. The officer got back to his desk, sighed, and picked up the phone to inform the hospital.

A large car pulled up in front of the St Edwards foster home. Two dragons got out of the car, a white female and a red male. The dragons approached the building and entered into the reception.

"Can I help you?" The receptionist, a black female panther asked.

"Oh I'm Mrs Phoenix and this is my husband. We're here about an adoption?" the white dragon replied

"Oh yes, we've been expecting you, please come through" The panther showed the dragon couple to a room where a lioness was waiting.

"Ah, Mr and Mrs Phoenix I presume" The lioness shook both of the dragons hands "Welcome, I'm so glad you've decided to adopt a child. I am Miss Harris, I am the children's caretaker here. Please come this way, the children are outside playing."

The lioness showed the dragon couple to the foster home's playground. Many children, of different ages and species were playing.

"Is there any particular age group you want to adopt a child from?" the lioness asked

"Oh, about age 7, same age as my daughter"

"Oh ok, well there's..."

Just as the lioness started talking, Mrs Phoenix caught the sight of a child sitting alone on a bench, away from the other children.

"Who's that child over there?" Mrs Phoenix asked

"Hmm which one?"

"The one sitting on the bench"

"Oh him, that's David. He has been here for a year now"

"What species is he?"

"Human"

"Human, I didn't think there were any human children."

"Neither did I but here he is."

"Do you have any information about him?"

"I'm afraid not. The police found him with no records of his identity or whether he has any relatives. He didn't even have a name when he came here."

"Can I talk to him?"

"Of course, I must warn you though he is very quiet and withdrawn."

Mrs Phoenix walked up to the human child. The child was staring into the sky.

"Hello, David is it?"

The child looked at Mrs Phoenix

"Mind if I sit with you?"

"...No" the child replied, in a barely audible voice

Mrs Phoenix sat down with the child. The child resumed his staring at the sky.

"What are you looking at?" Mrs Phoenix asked

"Clouds"

"Why, do you like the look of them?"

The child looked stopped looking at the sky and looked at the ground.

"Not really"

The child fell silent again.

"So do you like it here David?" Mrs Phoenix asked

"...No"

"Why not?"

"Other kids are mean. They call me names a lot"

"Why do they do that?"

"They say it's because I'm a freak."

Mrs Phoenix felt a sadness fill her. A child, regardless of his species, shouldn't have to experience that.

"David, since you don't like it here, how would you like to stay with me?"

For the first time the child looked at Mrs Phoenix.

"...Why"

"Well you see, I have a daughter who has been feeling lonely and would like a brother. She won't call you names or be mean to you"

"...Really"

"Yes, really"

The child looked at the floor for a few minutes before getting off the bench and onto his feet.

"Okay" he said "I'll stay with you."

"Are you sure?" said Mrs Phoenix

"Yes, you're nice, much nicer than everyone here"

"Well let's go then"

Mrs Phoenix walked back up to the lioness with the child following.

"I'd like to adopt David" Said Mrs Phoenix

"Really, are you sure?"

"Yes, I think he deserves a nice home."

"Well come in and we deal with the paperwork"

"Oh David, I haven't introduced myself, I'm Mrs Phoenix and this is my husband, Mr Phoenix"

"A pleasure to meet you David" the red male dragon said

Mr Phoenix knelt down to shake David's hand, but the child simply stared at him.

"You're very big and musclely" He replied

"Ermm Thank you" Mr Phoenix replied, feeling a little awkward

Once the paperwork was finished David's belongings, what little there was, was packed into the car. Once in the car, Mr and Mrs Phoenix both left the foster building and drove back to where they lived. Mr and Mrs Phoenix had both tried conversing with David as they drove back, but the child sat silently in the car not answering. Once they arrived home, Mr and Mrs Phoenix showed David into the house.

"Sapphire, were home" Mrs Phoenix shouted

A small pink dragon, roughly the same height as David, ran from upstairs towards them.

"Sapphire this is you new brother"

"Hi hi are you my new brother, you look cool, what's your name?" The small dragon asked

"D..D..David"

" David, pfft, David is such a boring name, only boring people have boring names, I'm gonna call you something different, Flare yeah Flare sounds good, I'm gonna call you Flare."

David simply stood there, overwhelmed the small dragons fast voice.

"Hey Flare, want me to show you your room, your rooms cool because its next to my room, hey wanna play after I've shown you your room......."

The small dragon dragged David away, up the stairs, still chatting in an usually fast voice.

Mr Phoenix looked at his daughter then looked at his wife.

"She gets that happy attitude from you ya know" Mr Phoenix said

"Oh shut up" Mrs Phoenix replied.
