#2 of So Close and Yet so Far

Please enjoy and all that jazz.

"You see those two over there?" Evan asked nodding his head in the direction of a small black cat and a rabbit with a large bust.

"Yeah what about em?"

"What are you blind? Look how hot they are."

"I know Emily pretty well. I can introduce you if ya like."

"Emily?"

"The cat." I watched as the skunk looked over at the two morphs again, except this time they looked over at him as well and made eye contact. He quickly averted his gaze down to the floor.

"Nah don't worry about it... I have to shower and eat... and stuff."

"Quit being such a pussy."

"I'm not a pussy!" he said defiantly.

"Then go talk to them."

"I can't, I'm all sweaty and stuff."

"Now your just making excuses. Grow a pair and go over!" I taunted.

"Shut the fuck up man!" I smiled at Emily and motioned for her to come over when I was sure Evan wouldn't see.

"Well you better grow a pair fast, cause they're coming this way."

"You sonuva bit-" he started, but quickly stopped when he noticed Emily and her rabbit friend were now standing right next to us.

"Hey Mike," Emily cooed.

"Hey Em," I said giving the small cat a hug. "Nice to have a day off no?"

"Oh boy, don't I know it!" Emily and I had met at a party in the beginning of the year. However, we became good friends since she shared the same major as me, and consequently, many of the same classes. "And who's this?" she asked, her large yellow eyes flashing over to Evan.

"I'm Ev- Evan," he stammered.

"Good to meet ya Evan, I'm Emily," she said extending a hand, "And this is Katie," she said indicating the rabbit next to her.

"Nice to meet you too," Evan said weakly, shaking Emily's hand loosely and then offering it over to Katie.

"Soooo," Katie began, "You boys working out or what?"

"Actually we just finished-" Evan started.

"What he means to say is we just finished stretching and he'd be delighted to join you two. That is, if you wouldn't mind of course. I pulled something the other day and it's still bothering me a little. Don't wanna make it worse ya know?"

"Of course we wouldn't mind," Emily said happily. Katie smiled as well.

"Good, then I'll be heading off and I'll see you kids later," I said bidding them farewell.

"I'm going to kill you for this," he hissed. "We just ran fucking six miles and-"

"Nonsense," I interrupted. "You'll thank me later." I flashed him a shit-eating grin and he damn near hit me. "Just go easy on him ladies. He's delicate and might break," I said louder so they could hear me. They laughed and headed back into the gym and began to stretch. "Good luck," I said patting him on the back hard.

"Fuck you," he muttered as he made his way over to them. I laughed all the way to the locker room, where I showered and changed quickly and headed back out into the cold to get back to the room.

"Where were you last night?" Dan asked as I entered.

"I met up with a friend of mine from back home."

"Oh?"

"Yeah I'll introduce you to 'em later. You going to dance practice again today?"

"Becca's dragging me off again..." he said rolling his eyes.

"Thank God. I'm getting dragged there too! We can suffer together." Dan laughed and bent back over the books sprawled out all over his desk.

"What are you studying for?"

"Religion," he sighed. "We're learning about Christianity. You'd think growing up a devout Catholic would help but honestly I don't ever remember learning any of this in Sunday school."

"Why not just pray for a good grade?" Dan laughed and threw a balled up piece of paper at me.

"Asshole," he joked. "You got a pinch I can get off ya?" he asked.

"Nah, my friend's got it."

"I'm guessing it's a she."

"You'd be correct."

"Christ Mike, a day and she's already whipping you into shape. Sound's like all she's gotta do is sound the call and you'll come running. Rather obvious who's gonna wear the pants in this one."

"Hey! I'm still top dog around here!"

"Yeah, but you've been neutered," he laughed. I couldn't help but chuckle. I grabbed the wolf into a headlock and he struggled to break free. "Uncle!" he shouted. I let go of him and he rubbed his neck. "You know there is such a thing as free speech?"

"Not in this room. I rule with an iron fist," I said slamming my fist into my open hand.

"Well okay Mr. Dick-tator, but I've got to fucking study and you're bothering me."

"If that's how you're gonna be, I'll just find someone who will enjoy me annoying them," I said smugly.

"Where you going?" he asked.

"Nowhere. I'm just gonna take a nap for a while," I said stretching and taking off my shirt.

"One of those kinds of nights?"

"Not exactly... Listen, do me a favor and wake me up about an hour before practice."

"Sure," he said.

"Thanks."

"No problem." I laid down on my bed and turned on the TV. I caught the tail end of some stupid talk show but then the news began and I watched the different events that were happening across the world. Since the most monumental and groundbreaking piece of news that was being presented at the moment was another celebrity break-up, I quickly lost interest and fell asleep.

"Time to go," Dan said hopping onto the bed. I let out a loud yawn and pushed him off of me.

"Alright, just gimme a sec. You have to pick Jack up?"

"He's meeting us here." I stretched my back as I finally stood up and freshened myself up. There was a knock at the door and I watched as Dan went up to answer it. "Hey Jack. Mike and I are just about ready to go-" He paused, and when he opened the door fully I understood why. In Jack's stead was Danielle. "Oh... Hello. You're Mike's friend I presume?"

"I wouldn't go quite far enough to say friends, but yeah I do know him... Unfortunately," she smiled.

"Hardy har har," I said as I made my way towards the door. "Dan, this is Danielle. The one who kept me away from you all last night."

"Well then we have a bone to pick already," Dan joked as he shook Danielle's hand.

"This is my roommate, Dan," I said to her as she walked to my side. She gave me a quick kiss on the cheek and smiled.

"Hey guys," Jack said walking through the door.

"Hey hon," Dan said wrapping him into a warm embrace. Danielle looked at me quizzically.

"Dan's boyfriend," I whispered.

"He's gay?" she whispered back. I nodded and she raised a suspicious eye at Dan and then back to me.

"Now Jack, we have a very special guest with us tonight. This is Mike's newest slave driver Danielle." Danielle glared over at Dan while she shook the small mouse's hand.

"Pleasure to meet you," Jack said.

"I gotta get there early," Danielle said once the introductions were complete. "Come on you," she said pulling me by the arm.

"Fine," I said grudgingly. "See ya soon," I said to Jack and Dan who were both snickering as Danielle and I walked out. I saw Dan making a whipping motion out of the corner of my eye. "How'd you know where our room was?" I asked.

"I just asked around. One of my friend's knew."

"Who?"

"Sam." My mind reeled as I tried to figure out who Sam was.

"Sam?" I questioned. She laughed and smiled over at me.

"She said you probably wouldn't remember. Little wolf girl, dyed green hair," she elaborated while making a gesture to indicate her height. I just shrugged.

"Did we meet at a party?" She nodded.

"Explains a lot," she chuckled.

"Yeah well... I've settled down... sort of."

"Mmmhmm." We remained silent until we got to the gymnasium. Here we stopped and she gave me a kiss. "Behave yourself. Bill's gonna be here." As we approached the doorway my eyes took a second to adjust to the dim light coming from the outside lights, but it didn't take long for me to make out the shape of a large grey wolf approaching us.

"Hey babe," he said scooping her up into a tight hug. Danielle gave him a quick peck on the cheek and pulled away.

"Billy," she said, "This is Mike. He's an old friend from back home." I shook his hand loosely. "Love you," she said standing up and kissing Bill on the cheek before heading into the building. When she was out of sight Bill glared at me.

"Listen you," he snarled grabbing the collar of my jacket. "Back off of her. She's mine."

"Let go," I hissed.

"What are you going to do about it?" I shoved him hard backwards. He stumbled and nearly managed to drag me down with him as he fell. As he stood up and brushed himself off he spat at my feet. "Stay away from her," he warned and followed after Danielle, who was now in a group of girls and giggling.

"Fucker," I said loud enough to make sure he heard me before he slammed the door behind him and flipped me off through the glass of the doors. Not wanting to get into a fight, I decided to wait outside and cool off until Dan and Jack arrived.

"That was torture," Dan said as we unlocked our door.

"I know," I yawned. Danielle had gone off with Bill and hadn't said anything to me at the conclusion of her practice. Trouble was not my goal this night, so I had just gone back without saying anything. "I'm going to bed. Good luck with your test tomorrow," I said as I climbed into bed.

"Thanks. Night," he said.

I was asleep for a couple of hours when a loud knocking at the door woke me up. Dan groaned loudly and rolled himself onto his stomach and wrapped his pillow around his head. "Well I guess you're not getting up." A loud fake snore was his only reply. The knocking came again, only this time louder. "Alright, hold your fucking horses. Christ! Who the fuck visits at this hou- Danielle?" I asked an eyebrow raised.

"Mike," she sobbed loudly.

"Danielle? What's wrong?" She started to bawl her eyes out, gasping for air in between loud sobs. I looked over to Dan who let out a loud sigh. "Hey. Hey come on," I said wrapping an arm around her. "Let me get dressed. Let's go for a walk."

With only a jacket, it was mind-numbingly cold as we stepped outside into the wintry night. The wind was blowing strong, creating large drifts of snow along the walkways. Danielle was still crying as she grabbed onto my hand. "Now what's wrong?" I asked as she finally calmed down enough to stop crying and began sniffling in place.

"Bill and I broke up," she moaned. I decided to ask the next obvious question.

"Why?"

"Because of you." I felt a knot form in my throat. I wasn't sure if it was from anger or guilt, but I did my best to swallow it back down. "He said if we were going to stay together I'd have to stop hanging out with you. It's like he knew something was up. So I told him if he didn't trust me to hang out with you than I didn't want him being with any of his female friends, and then things just sort of blew up," she sighed. She stopped walking and looked up towards the heavens.

"Are you alright?" I asked when she failed to say anything else.

"It's for the best I guess. At least now I can be with you and not feel guilty about it." I smiled sheepishly.

"I feel like such an asshole."

"Don't babe," she said walking towards me and grabbing me into a tight embrace. Her tail wrapped around me. "You're freezing," she stated.

"No shit Sherlock," I said starting to shiver.

"Let's go back to my place. I bet I can warm you up," she whispered seductively into my ear as her tail rubbed between my legs.

"I'd go all in on that." She rolled her eyes and wiped the tears that remained along her muzzle. When we got back to her room, I noticed Dana wasn't there. "Where'd she go?" I asked.

"Who knows?" Danielle shrugged. "She left when Bill and I came in fighting and hasn't been back since. Mike?"

"Mmm?"

"Thank you for coming back with me. I know its difficult to tell what I really want sometimes, and I put you through all my bullshit... I just want you to know that, well... well I love you." She leaned in as if she was going to give me a kiss, but instead she just barely brushed her lips across mine and then she pulled away. I moved in to kiss her, but again she pulled back. Then she physically backed away from me. She began to undress slowly all the while putting on quite the show. When she stood before me in nothing but her bra and panties she stopped. I was at full attention at this point. She giggled when she noticed my arousal. She let one strap of her bra fall carelessly down her shoulder. I grabbed her tightly and kissed her while shedding off my own clothing. Without missing a beat, she threw me onto the bed and climbed on top of me in one fluid motion. She began to kiss down my chest, stopping when she reached right above my cock. Instead of continuing she stopped and crawled up next to me. Her hand gently stroked along my length. "Let's not ruin this," she said.

"Ruin what?"

"This. Sex makes everything so much more complicated."

"What do you mean make things more complicated? We've had sex lots of times."

"I know... But if we're actually gonna be in a relationship ya know? I just want it to mean something, and I just broke up with Bill and all..." She continued stroking and I grabbed her chin to make her look at me.

"If you're not ready then we don't have to," I said, doing my best to conceal my disappointment. "Look, I don't wanna fuck this up either."

"Watch your mouth," she warned. "But thank you," she said kissing underneath my neck.

"Danielle!" Dana exclaimed as she burst through the door. "Oh God! I'm so sorry," she said covering her eyes. "I'll go sleep at Vicki's," she said as she turned toward the door.

"No that's alright," Danielle said covering me up with her comforter. "We were just going to sleep."

"No! God, I'm so sorry," Dana muttered again, turning around but with her hand still covering her face.

"You can open your eyes, Dana. It's fine. I'm telling you." Dana hesitantly pulled her hand away from her face. A deep, scarlet flush was visible even through her red fur.

"I'm so sorry," she apologized again. "Goodnight," she said as she hurriedly crawled onto her bed.

"Goodnight," Danielle and I said in unison.

"I guess that means we should go to sleep too," Danielle whispered. She kissed me softly and tousled my hair.

"That's what I was doing before you came along," I whispered back.

"Oh shut up," she said playfully hitting me beneath the covers. "You're still so cold."

"Here," I said pulling her up alongside me and resting her head on my chest. "Much better." She draped her tail over me. I kissed the top of her head. We fell asleep quickly.

"Mike. Baby," Danielle cooed softly into my ear.

"Ugh. What time is it?" I asked groggily.

"Ten."

"Don't you have class?"

"I'm cutting."

"Oh my Danielle, you naughty girl you!" I joked, kissing her as I sat up.

"Oh yes," she said rolling her eyes. She kissed me again and then sighed softly as she pulled away. "About last night..."

"What about it?" I asked, stretching as I stood up. Danielle continued to sit.

"I just want to let you know we will, you know..."

"It's fine," I said picking her up so that her legs were draped around my waist.

"It's just... Not now... I don't think I'm ready..."

"Danielle," I said staring directly into her sparkling green eyes, "It's fine. I told you yesterday, whenever you're ready we will. Sex isn't all that important." Danielle squirmed a little in my arms and then threw her arms around the back of my neck.

"Baby you're absolutely perfect," she said kissing me.

"I think I told you that yesterday too," I smiled.

"Have you ever heard of narcissism?" she chuckled.

"Nope, never," I said rolling my eyes. I placed her down on the edge of the bed as I retrieved my clothes from the floor. As I dressed, she lied back down. "Are you going to class at all?" She shrugged.

"We'll see how I feel I guess." I couldn't help but crack a smile at her response. "What?" she asked with a hint of suspicion.

"You've changed an awful lot since we were last together. You used to always follow the rules."

"That got real boring, real quickly," she smiled. "I guess I learned not to take everything all that seriously." She stretched herself out and gave me a playful nip under my neck. "I guess Daddy was right, you are a bad influence," she chuckled. We sat for a while, just enjoying the silence and each others company. "So listen," she said, speaking for the first time in ages.

"What do you want?"

"How do you know I want something? Maybe I just wanted to tell you something."

"Nu-ugh," I said shaking my head. "That's what you always said when you wanted me to do something I really wouldn't wanna do. I'm assuming that still hasn't changed," I said smugly with a wink.

"Well," Danielle huffed, folding her arms across her chest.

"What is it?" I asked nuzzling my head under her chin.

"We have a winter dance benefit thing for the club in a couple of weeks," she started. I already didn't like where this was going. "And we have this spot on the campus radio station to you know, advertise I guess."

"Good luck," I snorted. "No one listens to that trash."

"And that's where you come in. I was supposed to do it but I don't really know what to do, so I was just wondering if maybe you would do it?" she asked, batting her eyes.

"Forget it," I said tersely.

"Mike..."

"No," I said, determined to remain steadfast in my decision.

"Please," she pleaded.

"Danielle!"

"Mike! Hear me out. You're good with words. Heaven knows you talk too much, and now we've finally got a good use for all that hot air."

"No," I said firmly.

"And you've got this way of making people actually listen to you that most people would kill for! Please baby?" she asked, gently kissing me. I let out a long, exasperated sigh.

"When is it?"

"Does that mean you'll do it?" she asked excitedly.

"When is it?" I repeated.

"I want a definite answer from you first."

"I suppose," I grimaced in anticipation of her answer.

"Tonight at eight."

"What!? Tonight. No fuc- No freaking way."

"You just said you would!"

"That was before I found out it was tonight. I'd like a little time to think about what I'm going to say so I don't come across as a complete jackass."

"But you are an arrogant jackass! That's what makes you, you!"

"Gee thanks."

"Mike you know what I mean. You're good on the spot and I really think people might listen to you." She began rubbing my shoulders and I felt my resolve just slip away.

"Fine..." I let out in a long, defeated sigh.

"You're the best," she said kissing me.

"Boy. Two days we're together and already you've got me answering to you're every whim." I hated talking in front of a group of people. At least I wouldn't be able to see my audience, and I have to admit I took great solace in the fact that there'd maybe be two or three people listening. "You owe me big for this," I said with emphasis on the word big.

"I can think of a few ways to repay you," she said coyly.
