When we were children

We explored many things

From the trees and their leaves

As they blow through the breeze

To our bodies, from the eyes in our heads

To the skin on our knees

Now adulthood is on the brink

Waiting to sink its teeth in us

Bringing up romance, sex

A social dynamic we were

Never trained for

Unprepared for what wait

On the other side of the border

Unaware that your love is wrong

It's when you see the boys

They're all looking for girlfriends

While you look at the boys

Hoping one of THEM can be your girlfriend

When you know you're different

And they're different from you

And won't want that with you

So you cave in and find a girl

You may care for her

But love?

This social pressure leads you

Into her arms, her bed

And between her legs

Finding a space which is open for you

But leaving the space within you empty

That carnal moment knowing

You will never love her that way

You're both ashamed

That you were so open

That you were so stupid

'I trusted him'

'I loved her'

'He doesn't love me'

'Can I trust her?'

'What now?'

'What now?'

We didn't turn gay

Or turn you away

To fit the patriarchs

As these same men

Judge us as less.

Don't 'hey gurl' me

While religions create camps for us

As a way to cure us of 'diseases'

Telling us jesus loves us

But only if we get us a girl

Don't 'hey gurl' me

When Russia says while you're queer

You can't say that you're here

For fear the straight kids will disappear

Due to insane little queers

Don't 'hey gurl' me

While gays are demonised

As perverts breaking the world

Acceptable to rape because it'll cure her

And to kill him because he was gay

On the newspapers they say

His name. His identity.

Our fights are one in the same

As these homophobic voices

Also limit female choices

For no one who has spoken up

Has been listened to

For we don't know better

Than a straight male.

Don't use a caricature

To belittle our fight

Because you feel misogyny

Is promoting a sexuality

That the world has for years

Belittled as demons, perverts

And the mentally insane.

Our fights are hand-in-hand

Not in superior positions

Just because of the loud few

Doesn't mean you can belittle

We the many

Who believe in equality

With no regard of genitals.

So don't 'hey gurl' me

To belittle struggle.

Don't 'hey gurl' me

For something we can't control.
