#3 of The Struggle of Two

Alfred experiences a life changing two weeks which contains work and hopes for going to other places

The two weeks of work routine had passed and for Alfred it passed quite fast, perhaps too fast. In the middle of the routine Alfred found out that he was in love with Arthur and tried to handle this truth about himself that he was in love with same gender. Even though he had not dated many girls in his earlier age he had two girlfriends and both went well at first. The problem was he was not so much into them and both of the former girlfriends didn't think that they received enough love in return and ended the relationship gently and never really talked to Alfred again thus he couldn't ask further about the problem. He didn't give it too much of a thought and just left it alone until recently. He remembered the two weeks really clear and remembered many of the words Arthur said during the work with the project. He would often have the flashbacks around bedtime at the end of the two weeks and felt a wonderful feeling through his chest and heart.

Alfred had to remember that he had to not visit Arthur's place for too long. The first day it did not bother him at all. There was the normal welcome: "So we have to work on lesser time, eh?" asked Arthur and held the door open for Alfred. "Yeah," answered Alfred and place his bag at the bed "it didn't go so well with my parents last time" "Got into trouble?" "The usual repayment; do the dishes, laundries and such" Alfred saw that Arthur looked down maybe by guilt and quickly added: "By the way, my mom is pregnant" "Oh, congratulations! So when will she give birth?" "In about... ehm... 3 months and 2 weeks" He liked the conversation. "You are turning into a big brother in no time!" Arthur gave Alfred a slap on the back which made Alfred feel appreciated but he manned up and said: "Let's start with this project!" "Yes!" Both took their work papers out of their bags and Alfred felt really alive and happy. "We should be working on the analysis as soon we have read the text thoroughly and after that I'll work on the perspectives and structure of the text and you can work with the interpretation and meaning of the text" "Yes, sir!" "Next time we should analyze the historical part to make an interdisciplinary perspective of it" "Smartass" smiled Arthur. Both were really motivated and felt the enthusiasm flow through.

He remembered the happiness he got when Arthur called him smartass. That he some sort was worthy or important enough for Arthur that he got a nickname. As he was lying there on the bed he hugged the pillow tightly and sighed for him and restarted the flashback.

As they worked through the little time they had they sometimes came to touch each other hands when they reached for their pencils or eraser. For Arthur it probably didn't mean anything special while for Alfred he felt a slight tension and quicken heartbeats which he still not understood. The days went and they became closer and closer friends and at the fourth day of work Alfred came to experience a playful fight that would trigger his suspicion of what he had for Arthur. It was right before the end of the work and they had come far into the analysis, interpretation and so on. At that time they both got nicknames and even though it was contrary to both his own nature and his nature of his specie Alfred reluctantly received the nickname "Butler" while Arthur gladly received the nickname "King Arthur" or "King" for short. As they sat there on the bed Arthur demanded: "I, as your High King, demand that you take part of my work and finish it" Arthur role played and pointed at Alfred with authoritative voice which he had learned from Alfred. "Heh..." Alfred couldn't help but laugh a bit "Why should I?" "Because I said so! And if you do not obey my orders I shall make you pay" "Make me" He pushed Arthur and Arthur pushed back. The situation escalated and they ended up doing a playful fight where the one alternately rolled over the other. As the fight went on Alfred felt happiness and joy go through him, stronger than before. Both smiled and laugh of joy but Alfred had to go home before it was too late. As they were about to depart from each other he wished that it would happen again and as the wish was at its strongest Arthur said: "It was like that we were lovers" Alfred thought "If we just were" spontaneously and then he saw the very feelings he had for Arthur for over a month clearly, that it had hid for him right before his eyes and they were undeniably true. He couldn't amass the information he got from himself and went on a mental panic. He tried to find an explanation of why he didn't saw earlier. The only explanation he could think of was that love does blind people which just verified his love for Arthur even more. He tried to keep his cool: "Hehe... as if" He wanted to say that it was a lot of fun but he contained himself and said instead to sound normal and authoritative "Next time we should progress on the perspectives of the case" "We'll do, sir" Arthur saluted and role played a soldier.

After they both waved each other farewell and Alfred made sure that Arthur didn't look Alfred looked back several times and sighed as a sign of longing for him. The winter was slowly but surely approaching to this southern part of the northern country Melren so Alfred froze a bit but he ignored it as he was in the middle of thinking about the revelation he had at Arthur's home: "What am I going to do? Why am I in love with Arthur and not a girl? I somewhat want to be in love with Arthur but... dammit this is so confusing!" He sighed and continued "So what about my past girlfriends? Guess that could answer some of my questions about that part. But who am I going to tell about this? No, I should take this easy and go forward about this step by step. First I need to focus on finishing the project and prepare to be a big brother, and then I can think about telling others about this"

He was twisting and turning on the bed when he finished that flashback, reconsidering about who he should tell about his sexuality and his feelings for Arthur. He then started the flashback of the day he decided taking on the part of telling anyone about the sore topic.

As the days went on he became bit by bit more indulgent for Arthur whom Arthur didn't notice through the two week. For instance Arthur asked few times if Alfred could help with what Arthur was working on even though Alfred made it reluctantly clear that they had to work a bit more separately until the end of the progress of the day and Arthur unsurely agreed to help. One day, after Alfred was even surer about his feelings, Arthur asked if Alfred could stay to eat dinner with Arthur's family. Alfred sure liked Arthur's family whom he met many times during the working with the project but he had to keep his promise with his parents even though he wanted to enjoy a dinner with his crush. "Are you sure there's no way you can stay longer 'till the dinner is over?" asked Arthur a bit disappointed since Alfred had become a close and important friend to him. "There's no way around, King" answered Alfred also a bit disappointed. He longed to stay here with Arthur, he wanted to come closer to this polar fox, and he longed to hear his voice, longed to feel the love for him at close range, longed to know more about him. Then it came to him: He parents did say that he must not visit a stranger's place for long but they did not say that a stranger wasn't allowed to stay at his home. He felt joy and warmth when he got that idea and expressed: "I may not visit you for long but you may visit me for dinner, King" "You mean... I can go to your place?" "I think so" "But you said at the first day that we had to work at my home" "Yeah, but there I thought that the rule also applied to my place and now I see that my parents never really forbid me to take, as they called them, strangers to dinner at my place" "Then it's settled! To your home we go!"

Even though they nearly shifted from summer fur to winter coats they still took their warm clothes on and went out to the icing and relentless cold. They also took one pair of skates along with them for safety measures.

"It is sure cold, Butler" said Arthur in the middle of the walking. "Yeah, and it's not even November or snowing yet" "Have you ever thought of moving south of Melren?" They were approaching to a place where there was a frozen lake. "No... ehm... I mean I had the thought before but I never really considered moving from Melren - maybe it would be too hot down south" answered Alfred and made a move to illustrate what he said. "Have you ever been on vacations down south?" "No, I haven't unfortunately" answered Alfred and sighed. "Why?" "Well, I live among the Moon Paw and we some sort have to live close to each other to keep the bond from cracking or breaking which consequently affect even our bigger vacations" "Do you want to see other places than Melren?" "Why do you ask?" "I can take my girlfriend with me to other places OR I can take one friend with me" "Are suggesting me to go with you to other countries than Melren?" He felt really flattered, not only because he got the offer of going on trip outside of Melren with Arthur but also that Arthur may choose him instead of his girlfriend. "No, I'm just saying that I can take you with me if you want to, Butler" smiled Arthur. "Oh..." Alfred felt really embarrassed. At one slight second he thought that Arthur was prioritizing him instead of his girlfriend but his feelings made him take the first impression he got and act by that. They reached the lake and as Alfred was in the middle of emotional thoughts Arthur took off his shoes and replaced them with the skates. As Alfred was about to say something Arthur started skating on the ice steadily increasing the speed. Alfred forgot what he was about to say and enjoyed watching Arthur skate and laughed slightly when Arthur fell. Then, for the first time of the year, it began to snow and Alfred looked up upon the sky and tried to catch the snows with his mouth and thought: "So... I can go with Arthur? Is that what I want? I sure do. Would my parents accept that? I mean... I've never been other places than inside of Melren so it could be refreshing to go to different places with... sigh... Arthur. I should tell somebody about this, maybe Melvin or Sasha or... I don't know. I think my parents would accept me as gay and maybe even Arthur's parents" His world became fuzzy and unclear and because of that he didn't hear "Watch out!" when Arthur was heading towards Alfred at medium high speed. A collision then occurred. Arthur's and Alfred's faces were pointing right at each other and the space was not even two inches when they both opened their eyes. Arthur felt lucky that his face was covered in fur, if not his face would have been glowing red. "What do you say, Butler?" said Arthur suddenly when he stood up and cleansed his clothes for snow. "Ehm... I need to ask my parents for permission but otherwise..." he hesitated but manned up and said the last part "I... want to... do it" "Alright! Then let's not waste more time and go to your place" Arthur was quite cheerful when his close friend wanted to accept the offer.

After a discussion with his parents about having strangers at his place, which they agreed to, they both got late dinner which was a fried cow steak. They afterwards went downstairs to his room to discuss the options for both the project and the tour. They came to an agreement that said that Alfred will try to find out about the trip with his parents in the coming three weeks and Arthur mainly should negotiate with his parents about the cost of the trip and talk to his girlfriend about this.

Alfred had not talked with his parents about the trip and he innocently and sincerely hoped for that they would allow him to go with Arthur because this is nearly a dream that comes to reality. In the last days of the two weeks they were nearly finished with the project and he still had not fully decided who he should tell about his identity. The near future would bring some valuable information about Alfred's status for Arthur.
