#5 of In The Company of Shadows

These little tidbits come from my personal journal here on SoFurry, I even named them because I love you that much. Well that and I didn't want to break them up. Read, rate, don't get scared, and enjoy.

Of Horses and Hearses

So it was me, my mom and one of my brothers. One of my moms family had just recently passed away and they were transporting her body to a family cemetery out in the boonies. It was somewhere out in the hills after you pass through Ethete and head towards Riverton using 17 mile, a bad stretch of road if there ever was one. Anyz we were a few cars behind the hearse as it led the way to the cemetery. From the hills came a group of horses that ran along both sides of the hearse as it neared its destination. This was in pure daylight mind you. The horses which were painted and looked like something along the lines of Hidalgo, galloped on both sides of the hearse, kicking up dust as they did. Then suddenly they turned back to the hills and were gone as the hearse entered the cemetery grounds. It wasn't till we got there ourselves that we asked if anyone had seen the horses along side the hearse. No one but us three had seen them and we talked about it afterwards. We all agreed it was something very spiritual.

The Legend of Bull Lake

I remember hearing the legend about Bull Lake from someone and that in the dead of night you could hear the buffalo running under the water. Their reason for being there if I remember right was that they were crossing the lake during a harsh winter storm and had fallen through the ice. Well me being me and after watching whatever ghost hunter show on MTV that had the song Voodoo play at the end of it, decided to go find out for myself. I didn't go alone tho, I was too scared. So I brought Derf and Spud with me. After mustering our courage we departed Spuds house which wasn't too far from Bull Lake. It was something around a 15 minute drive. After we arrived we parked at the top of the dam and listened. We couldn't hear much over the spillway and moved further up alongside the lake. After finding a good spot to turn and burn should we see bigfoot or something else that haunts the lake we got out of the truck and stood near the shoreline. After a few short moments we heard a low rumble coming from beneath the lake. It was fascinating to hear and experience. At least it was until Derf said he saw something moving about the bushes and caused us to get back in the truck and leave. So that myth is true should you ever visit the rez and go to Bull Lake to experience it for yourself. A quick note, you should take a rifle and knife. Just in case. Okay?

The Clown

Then of course there's the stories that are known to all on the rez, where I come from anyways, that you may be lucky enough to read about in some magazine. One of my favorites is among the younger generation of urban legends. I have heard stories about a clown and that upon his arrival would bring death to those who seen him. It was a few years ago when somebody said they took a picture of it on a cell phone. They said it was near the trees at Shipton Lane. Coincidentally they say one of the elders had seen it and became sick soon after. Now if you're like me. The picture that spread around the rez like wildfire seemed fake to me. If what they say is true that you die after seeing it well then how did the picture get sent by the person who seen it? My thoughts exactly. I even had the pleasure of seeing the picture for myself. Imagine one of those guys from Insane Clown Posse. The picture looked almost like them.

The Ghost Car

Moving on about the subject, another one of my favorites. The ghost car. I think it was on YouTube the one with police chasing a white car when it turns off the road and is on the other side of a fence. I'm not saying that its fake just that maybe it is true. Doing some research into the subject about a similar incident on the rez. I learned from a few people in the Wind River Police Department that an officer did pull over a ghost car somewhere between Ethete and Riverton, if you take the scenic route. The officer whose name is Glascock pulled over a black 1970's-esque vehicle with no license plates and very tinted windows. When he walked over to the driver side he waited for it to roll down. What he seen next could only be described as something out of the Twilight Zone. Inside he seen the faces of teenagers who had killed themselves earlier that week. He also stated that blood was dripping from the interior. It was a few days later that he requested a transfer. Scary no?

The Agency Incident

It was a few years back when I heard about another incident involving the rez cops. I used to live near a water tower which was located at the edge of the Agency, so called because it was a group of houses located near the B.I.A. offices. Details are very sketchy at best but from what I gather they chased a large creature from the Agency area out to someones field. Imagine a Xenomorph from the movie Aliens, I know I did. They said it was large, covered in black and moved very fast. And they only managed to kill the baby while mama got away. Some people on the rez said they shipped the body to Sheridan or some place (Sorry I forgot the name.) I don't know about you but if I saw something like that, I would scream my ass off and hope that I have a gun. Like my brother said, "Shoot till the monsters go away". But we all know monsters aren't real, right?

Werewolves in Lander

Then of course my uncle told me one of his spooky stories one night. He told me that there used to be a scientist who once lived in Lander and was on the mad side of things. My uncle told me that he and his brother had been drinking at Lander bar and heard something digging in the dumpsters behind it. They thought it was one of their friends who had gotten into a fight and went to go see. What they seen was an honest to god werewolf. My uncles brother ran but my uncle stayed. He said after it seen him it let out a loud howl and ran off further down the alleyway. After that my uncle said he never drank at Lander bar again. Do I believe him? Hard to say when alcohol plays a part but who am I to question.

He also has some stories about bigfoot during his younger cowboy days. Sadly I can't remember any of them and thought I would mention it.

Deer Woman

Has anyone ever seen that movie about Deer Woman? I just had to buy it after seeing it on cable. That is a true thing. I even have a story to tell you about it. Though its not as glorified as the movie is. Anyz, it was around midnight many years back. I was around 14 or 15 back then and lived in a village called Charlie Town. I was still awake and laying on my bed. My bedroom had a great view of the mountain range on the horizon. Anyz, the dogs started crying in the village all of a sudden. You know how a dog howls during a fire siren? Imagine that but every dog in the neighborhood all at once. It was very creepy to say the least. After she passed through our village she continued on down to Shipton Lane and eventually was gone. It wasn't until the next day that word got out that it was deer woman who had passed through. And there I was, laying on my bed in front of an open window when it happened. I'm still waiting for Bill Engvall to visit me and say, "Here's Your Sign"

Visitors

You ever see a UFO? That's right I went there. : p Well I was still living in Charlie Town after the Deer Woman thing and one night I was sleeping over at a friends house. We camped outside his house. It was around 2 in the morning when I had to get up and go pee. So I left the tent and went inside. After doing my business I walked back outside. After closing the front door to the house I looked to the mountains when I seen a strange sight. It was a huge triangle that came hovering over the mountains, putting out power as it came closer and passed over me. I was in awe at this thing. I know me and my friends joked about moving stars being UFO's but this was proof enough to me that we're not alone. I remember it because it had big lights at each rounded point. It was pretty hard to miss something so big in the sky. Imagine something out of Independence Day except slightly smaller and in the shape of a giant triangle. Kinda creepy isn't it?

Then of course I had a similar event happen to me in Havre, Montana. It was roughly around midnight and I had just stepped outside. You get the feeling that I'm a night owl? Anyways I looked to the stars and that's when I seen it. A round disc hovering almost concealed in the sky. A few of my neighbors came out to see what I was doing because I was the only person standing on a dark porch looking to the sky. I pointed up and they too seen what I was looking at. Then came the sound of two jets coming from out of nowhere, a sonic boom filling the air as they chased it towards the Montana/Canada borderline. I'm pretty sure they had been chasing this thing for quite sometime. Which would explain their sudden appearance.
