Chapter 5 of Red Storm.

Stalingrad, Soviet Union September 30th, 1942 Vlad looked out to the two soldiers making their way back to them. The rain was slowing now, but visibility wasn't the best. "Ah.. good. They're back.." he thought as the two sat down next to him. "Anything to report, tovarishche?" He asked. Kiril turned to him. "At least one German squad or battalion." He panted. "Don't know about anything else.." he continued. Vlad nodded and looked back out at the house he sent them to. In the background, Yuri was still laying on his bed roll and looking out at some of the buildings, memories dancing about his head. One Year Earlier, June 23rd, 1941 Yuri hastily walked to the front window of his home, tossing the curtains aside to look out. Multiple houses and buildings were burning or exploding, people rushing to whatever cover they could find. He noticed several Red Army troops run to evacuate those who hadn't left on their own. Suddenly, Yuri's sister, Kristina, ran up next to him. "Holy shit..." her sudden reaction startled Yuri a bit, but his attention was quickly diverted back to the chaos outside. "What the hell's going on?" Their father, followed by their mother, came out from their room. "No idea.." Yuri said, drawing out his voice a slight bit. It was around 6:30 AM, but the sun was still hidden somewhat over the steppes further out. "Look!" Kristina pointed up to the sky as a plane approached a set of homes. Yuri looked to its supposed trajectory and saw a collection of houses with many people standing out in front. He looked back at the plane, the sun showing off the swastika on the tail fin perfectly. "Germans..." Yuri thought just as the bomb fell on the houses, engulfing them in fire and debris. "Oh dear God!" Yuri's father gasped as the bomb exploded. Yuri looked over his shoulder for a second as the door started rattling, just before bursting open as 3 German soldiers walked in. They grabbed them and tossed them outside where a couple of trucks were waiting. One of the soldiers, a rather burly tiger, grabbed Yuri and threw him to one of the trucks, followed by the same soldier tossing his sister to the opposite one. He was just about to yell her name when a rifle butt hit the back of his head and he collapsed rubbing thre back of his head. "Schwiene!" On of the German soldier spat as he walked over Yuri and closer to his parents. His father stood up, but was quickly shoved back down, followed by a bayonet through his head, killing him instantly. Yuir watched in horror as his father collapsed on the ground. His mother was taken and thrown to the house wall and shot right then and there. After this ordeal, Yuri watched as Kristina was forced into one of the trucks posted outside of the home, followed by the soldiers doing the same to him. He sat in the wooden seat, his home slowly fading away... Three hours later. Yuri sat silently, not looking at the German soldiers sitting opposite of him. Thoughts swirled about his head, the images of his parent's dead bodies with a bayonet cut and bullet hole in their foreheads and Kirstina being lifted into the truck. Tears started to well up in his eyes, but were cut off as a sudden explosion destroyed the truck behind them. "Artillerie! Dekung!" The German soldiers started scrambling out of the truck and into a rut in the road. Yuri sat watching them just as another explosion that hit in front rattled the truck again, throwing him off the wooden seat. He kneeled and looked at the soldiers again. Suddenly, each of the soldiers went down as multiple bangs were heard and five Soviet soldiers came up and investigated the dead bodies. Yuri heard multiple things coming from their conversation before they turned, noticing him. "Ey." One of them, a panther, pointed at him. They approached Yuri, advancing slowly as the young wolf poked his head out from the truck. "Come on out." One of them said calmly. Yuri looked sheepishly at them, noticing the bright red and gold star on the cuff of an officer. "You're Russians..." Yuri said timidly. The panther was about to respond when another explosion ripped through the truck in fron of them, causing Yuri to jump out and flee with the soldiers out towards a small trenchline as more explosions hit near them. Once they arrived, the panther took Yuri down to a small, earthen room and pointed to a bed. "Here. It's not much, but it's all we have at the moment." Yuri nodded and the panther left, closing the wooden door behind him. The wolf looked around before planting himself on the bed, breathing hard. As he sat, he felt tears running down his cheeks, unsurprising, he thought. But those thoughts were again replaced by the images of his dead parents. He started crying and did so for a good half an hour before falling into a much needed rest on the small bed.
