#9 of Coons of a Color

The family sits down to has things out. Is this the end? Depends. Let me know if you want more!

Mary's fierce and piercing gaze never left Jose. Luke hadn't said much, but Mary was smart enough to put two and two together; it was Jose who had spoiled her perfect baby girl. She wasn't sure what she would do to Jose, but suffice it to say she was furious at the poor raccoon. Out of the corner of her eye she saw that Luke was as stoic and calm as ever and wondered how in the world he could be when he knew their adopted son was... doing such inappropriate things to Catherine?

"You had something you wanted to talk to us all about?" Mary asked Luke, trying to keep from snapping at the silence.

Luke laced his fingers together and rested his paws on the table, "Mary, I told Jose we're not his parents." he started. Audible gasps could be heard from both Mary and Catherine, though for different reasons. "And, in relation, Jose has... feelings for Cat." he finished, looking his wife squarely in the eyes, knowing she was holding back a dam of emotions and not a few accusations.

"We had agreed!" Mary began angrily before taking a deep breath while the other bit of information processes. It just confirmed her suspicions, really, but that didn't make her any less upset at the raccoon.

Mary tried to steady herself with a breath. Luke must have a reason. She'd deal with that second atrocious statement in a moment. "Why, Luke, did you tell him?" she asked tight lipped.

It was simple for Luke, and he had told his wife this reason before in the many arguments they had had about this very topic, "I felt he was ready, and I believe him when he says he's fine with knowing." and gave a questioning look to Jose, making sure he was right. Jose gave a nod. While it rose a few questions, Jose would rather know the truth.

"We're still a family, Mary." Luke finished, turning back to his wife.

Mary only grumbled a bit. Whether Jose still loved them or not, she still hadn't wanted him to know. "What about Catherine?" Mary asked, hoping that her daughter would be on her side. All eyes focused on Cat and she squirmed. "I don't know." she murmured. It was a relief that there was a possibility that she and Jose might have a future, but part of him that she loved was that he was her brother. Would that go away if she accepted that he was adopted?

"Take your time, hun." Mary said, running her paw down Cat's hair as she turned to Jose "As for the other point." her voice hard as stone, "What have you done to my sweet daughter?"

"Mary." Luke warned.

"Nothing, mom. Honest." he said, but knew they didn't buy it. The look on Mary's face wasn't one of accusation, but of judgement. She -knew- he and Cat had had sex, and her fierce look was drilling it out of him. Unable to meet her gaze any longer, he looked away, "We- we had sex." he confessed. Luke, of course, had put the pieces together already and had come to terms with it. Mary, on the other paw, hadn't yet been able to let it settle.

She didn't say anything, only sitting back and taking in a breath. This wasn't a calming breath like before, but like a storm sucking in wind before it hits. Both Jose and Catherine cringed away, preparing for her wrath.

"How could you?" she began in bated fury, "Soil my precious daughter. What were you thinking?"

"Mary." Luke said again.

"We were just curious at first," Jose began

"But we love each other." Catherine finished for him when Mary's stare silenced him. Mary turned a flabbergasted look to Cat.

"You what? You're too young to know love." she dismissed, "And you probably put that idea in her head so you could have your way with her. But no more!"

"That's enough Mary." Luke said sternly, "Let your children speak for themselves."

With a huff, Mary sat back in her chair and folded her arms. Jose was the first to speak up, "I started it. I... I saw her leave the shower a few nights ago, and-"

"JJ, that's not true." Cat cut him off, "I could have left, but I didn't."

"One at a time." Luke cut in, "And please spare us some of the details." and looked to Jose.

Taking a breath and holding his shaking paws in his lap, the raccoon told his version of how he and Cat came together, skipping many details. They didn't need to know the gritty, wet and messy things between him and Cat.

When it was clear that Jose was finished, Luke turned to Cat. She seemed to have calmed down a bit, and though her voice was shaky at the start of her telling, it was steady- though still a bit quiet- when she finished.

"Three times." Mary breathed, shocked they had managed even once under their noses.

All four sat in silence, Catherine and Jose terrified, Mary and Luke thinking. The silence hung and stretched, spanning seconds, then minutes before Luke finally broke it, "Under the conditions that you two never do it while we're home, and you use safe practices, and you don't let anyone else know, you have my blessing."

There were mixed reactions all around. Jose heaved a sigh of relief, Mary gasped in dismay, and Catherine looked on in disbelief.

"You can't be serious!" Mary accused him, "They can't! They're siblings!"

"A moment ago it looked like you were ready to disown him." Luke countered calmly. Mary stuttered and spluttered. She could never win against Luke. It's what made him perfect for her. Where she got so emotional so quickly, he always stayed so calm.

Making sure Mary wouldn't interrupt any more, he gave both his children a look, "Agreed? Or will you two call it off?"

"But, why?" Jose asked, "I mean, I'm your son. Shouldn't you be against me... being with Catherine, your daughter?"

"If you were anyone else, I would be. But I've raised you, seen the raccoon you're growing into. There's no one else I'd rather see my only daughter be with. I know you're responsible and trustworthy, I know you'll work hard to make her happy." was Luke's heart-warming reply, delivered with a dead-set serious face. Then a smile tweaked his lips, "Besides, it make it easier for me to kick your ass if you mess up."
