Ch.3 - The Magic School

It was now morning, and the two foxes were up eating breakfast and getting ready for magic school, planning on making the most of their time there. After they were prepared, they made their way out of the castle, and were greeted by Anne just outside the front gates. "Good-morning, I trust you slept well?" "Good morning, Anne, yes we did, thank you," Foxara replied. Vixena also bid Anne a good morning, then asked her if she was going to be their teacher, to which she replied, "Actually, I handle some of the upper classes. Since you are a beginner, you will be taught by another, whom I will introduce you to once we get there. Today, I will be working with Foxara, seeing how far his abilities have progressed so that he may be tutored accordingly."

She then lead them through town to the school grounds. Upon arriving, they noticed two different buildings, each located some distance away from each other. "The Magic School is divided into two different houses," Anne started explaining to them. "The house on the left is where we teach the methods for spell casting and controlling the magic power that lies within you. The house on the right is where the students actually practice what they are taught under the supervision of their teachers, as well as train on their own in a special chamber.

We do it this way because each class has a different schedule, and therefore students can use their magic without disrupting those in class. The entire building is coated in a magic barrier to protect it from damage from the training, though it doesn't protect it from getting dirty, so we have a team of cleaners made up of the students to keep it in good shape. Also, the only magic that is practiced in the school building is healing magic, as that doesn't disrupt any of the students."

She then lead them to the school building, where they were greeted by a male orange cat, looking to be in his thirties. "Hello Paul," Anne greeted him. "Foxara, Vixena, this is Paul, he teaches the beginning healing magic classes. He will be your tutor, Vixena, during your and Foxara's stay here." "Hello, I've heard a lot about you two. Foxara, I may stop in to watch when Anne guages your magic later, so I'll see you then. Vixena, please follow me, class is about to start." Vixena gave Foxara a kiss on the muzzle and they bid each other good luck on their first day, then she followed Paul to her class. "Alright, Foxara, please follow me."

She lead Foxara to the third floor of the training building. All of the rooms looked the same, big rooms that were mostly empty except for some charms and magic staffs on a table on the near wall in each. She lead him to her class in the fourth room down. "Hello, class, we have a new student today, which you may have already heard of. His name is Foxara Kitsuno." This enticed some chattering among the students, they had immediately recognized the name. "Foxara, you may greet the class." Foxara gave a simple "Hello" and went to join them.

The class were all felines, though Foxara had noticed some wolves in another class on his way here. He was then greeted by the three felines from yesterday. "Hello, Foxara, we would like to apologize for the way we acted before. We did not realize who you were at first," Elissa spoke. Foxara replied, "You acted the way you did because we are foxes. I began this journey in hopes of stopping that. However, if you make an oath to treat my people for who they are and not what they are, I'll forgive you." Elissa replied, "Alright, we hearby swear to treat a fox for the kind of person they are, and not by their race. Right, girls?" Elissa motioned towards Elizabeth and Katrina. "Yeah, we promise too. And we're sorry." "Alright, then I forgive you." Foxara said, satisfied with their apologies.

"Alright class, I will be working with Foxara today to guage his powers. You may train on your own while I do so," Anne told the students, then walked over to Foxara. "Okay, I'm going to tell you the name of a spell. When I do, I want you to cast it at a target that I'm going to teleport here. I will guage the spells strength, the amount of control you have over it, and how many of the spells you are able to cast." She then made a target appear right across from them. It was just a simple target, made out of wood.

"Okay, first, cast Flame, level 1." Foxara then closed his eyes, stretched out his left arm and aimed his palm at the target, and chanted a few words. A ball of fire energy formed in his hand and shot out at the target, burning it into ashes. "Very good! Next, cast Freeze, level 1." Another target appeared, which Foxara took aim at, this time shooting a ball of ice energy at it. It hit the target, freezing it completely. Anne thought to herself, "Wow that was impressive! He has complete control of his magic, though he's making them kind of weak. I can sense he has a little more power than this, at least." "That was very good Foxara." Anne commented to him.

Just then, one of the male students came up to them, an orange cat. "Hm? Oh, Kyle. Foxara, let me introduce you. This is Kyle, our top student." "Hello, I'm Foxara," he greeted Kyle. "Yes, hello. I was watching you, and you seem to have some good skills. I was wondering, if Anne would permit it, if you would like to have a match between the two of us." Foxara replied, "Hm, that sounds like fun. Will you permit it Anne?" Foxara looked up at her, hoping she will say yes.

"Well, alright. Just don't hurt each other too bad. Class, may I have your attention?" All the students immediately complied, facing her. "There is now going to be a match between Foxara and Kyle, so please take a seat at the front wall, near the door." Everyone was now filled with anticipation, as they eagerly did as Anne said and sat down at the front wall. It was always exciting to watch a match between two mages, and this time even more so, as they would get to see what Foxara could do in battle. The two each took a place opposite of each other, each against one of the side walls, and Anne started giving instructions.

"Now remember, use spells only. No physical attacks. You may use your body to defend against spells, however. And, try not to injure each other too badly, as I have some things to teach you today, though the healing magic students would probably like the practice." Anne told the two, giving a smirk at that last part. "Also, though this should be obvious, no killing. After all, you two are students and potential friends, not mortal enemies fighting a war. Other than that, use any magic you deem fit to win. Begin!"

With that, both Foxara and Kyle started chanting. Kyle was the first to cast, sending a flame spell at Foxara, who dodged it, still chanting. He then fired a level 2 Ice spell at Kyle. He was surprised at this, but still managed to dodge it, just barely. "Wow, he taught himself that?! I only justed started learning to move while casting a few months ago!" Kyle thought to himself, bewildered. He quickly regained his composure, as he noticed Foxara chanting again, quickly moving towards the cat.

"Well, I'll just have to do the same." Kyle then started moving away , preparing another spell. Foxara shot his, a level 2 flame spell, aiming quickly and carefully so as to hit Kyle. Just as the ball of fire was getting close, Kyle raised a barrier, but it still left an impact, as his barrier was noticeably weakened and he had almost lost his balance, letting ou a small "Reow!" as it hit. He quickly recovered, and started another spell.

Foxara held his ground this time, starting another spell of his own. Kyle sent out a level 2 freeze spell, just as Foxara put up a barrier. The large ball of ice hit the magical shield, and was quickly nullified by it, leaving the fox unfazed and the barrier remained undamaged. This amazed Kyle. "What the heck, when he hit my barrier, I almost lost my balance and the barrier was severely weakened. I hit his, and it doesn't do a thing. Just how strong is he?" Kyle thought to himself.

He started casting spell after spell, each one hitting the barrier like a small rock hitting an iron wall. "Dang, I guess I'll have to use my strongest spell." Kyle then started chanting, raising his hand above his head. A ball of magic formed in his hand and started growing. It grew until it was twice the size of Kyle's head, then he threw it right at Foxara. Foxara could sense how powerful it was, and braced himself.

Foxara let out a long and loud growl as it hit his barrier and exploded, kicking up dust all around him and blocking sight from what was happening. Soon, both the explosion and the dust subsided, and Foxara was standing there. His barrier was down, and he was a little winded, but he still seemed to have lots of energy left. However, Kyle was getting tired, he had put a lot of magic into that blast.

Then, Foxara held his hand to his side and started chanting. This spell was strange, no-one in the room had ever heard it, not even Anne. Kyle sensed a lot of magic being focused in Foxara's hand, and tried thinking of what to do. He thought of dodging it, but his body was too tired. So, he decided the best thing would be to put up a strong barrier with what remained of his magic.

He started chanting it, and was pleased to find out he had enough magic to create a stronger barrier than before, and just in time, too. Foxara had just completed chanting, was was holding a small ball of light in his left hand. Kyle noticed that while it was smaller than his own, it was still much stronger.

All he could do was brace himself as Foxara launched the magic straight towards him. Kyle thought he sensed something else in it, but didn't have any time to think anymore of it as the blast hit his barrier, shattering it, and sending Kyle flying, letting out a loud, mreeeOOOOWWW as he flew into the wall and fell to the floor.

Everyone, including Foxara, ran over to Kyle. Surprisingly, he lifted himself up a little and looked around, to which Anne said, "Are you alright?!" "I think so, though I'm definitely bruised. Shouldn't I be unconscious right now?" Foxara replied, "I added a barrier spell and some curative magic into my spell. I didn't want to hurt you too much." He then cast a healing spell on Kyle, restoring some of his strength and healing some of his wounds. "Wow, you know healing magic?" Kyle said, surprised, and still cringing a little. Foxara replied, "Yeah, a little bit."

Anne then turned to Foxara and asked, "Where did you learn that spell? I've never seen it before," to which he replied, "I actually scribed it myself." Anne was amazed. "You scribed it? Most mages your age can only scribe level 1 spells, level 2 at the most. That was at least level 4. For someone your age to scribe such a powerful spell is incredible."

Then Kyle said, while Foxara cast another healing spell on him, "Foxara, you're incredible. Your at least as strong as the teacher's here, if not stronger. Did you teach yourself all of this?" Foxara was getting a little embarassed now. "Heh, actually, I was trained a lot by the kitsunes. They were the ones that gave my family it's name, Kitsuno. Apparently, it means 'kitsune warrior' in their ancient tongue, even though they haven't spoken it in ages and most of it has been lost. I don't really know why they gave my family that name, though I do know they hold us pretty high. I guess maybe I should ask them."

Kyle then got up, most of his wounds healed by Foxara. Anne then said to Foxara, "Well, the fact that you trained by kitsunes explains a lot. I hear their teaching methods are incredible. Most of their warriors are masters by the age of twelve. On top of that, you have a natural talent, which you have obviously honed.

I'm actually curious as to why you want to learn here," to which he replied, "It's because the spells I used during the match are the only ones I know. After I scribed that last one, I focused most on honing my skills than learning more spells. I want to learn as much as I can during my stay here."

Anne was happy to oblige. She was already planning on teaching the class some spells that day, even though the match had taken up a good chunk of it. She decided they would just have to stay longer than usual. Foxara was a quick learner too. Some of the spells didn't require chanting, just focus.

One of them was teleportation, which, after going back to the training house, Foxara tested by warping to Kyle, scaring the wits out of him. "Foxara! What are you trying to do, make my heart stop?" Kyle almost shouted, his heart pounding and trying to catch his breath. "Sorry, Kyle I didn't mean to scare you. I was just trying it out," he quickly apologized. "Well, just be more careful next time." "Alright, I will."

He and Vixena stayed there for a week, then they felt it was time to continue. Vixena was a quick learner as well, and had learned some good healing magic. Paul even gave her some books on it so she could continue studying. They both bid farewell to their new friends, bought some supplies with the money they had gotten from King douglas, and continued towards the Kitsune Village, satisfied and happy with their experiences in Felinia.
