All for one, One for All

By Ephemeral_Dreams

He has traveled far indeed, miles like the second hand.

He has unraveled far and beyond, equipped only with his maimed hand.

The unspeakable journey, insurmountable hills that he overcame.

His unconquerable will, the innumerable demons he had to tame.

Horrors of many faces, nightmares enough to chill the undead.

Terrors of many faces, neighbors of the damned, the eternal dead.

He has sought but one thing, that one place to call home.

He has naught but one thing, his own body, sanity long gone.

What is sanity, he asks, what does it mean to be alive?

He knows not the answer, nor does he expect to find it anytime soon.

What is insanity, he counters, why do I have to be alive?

He knows not the answer, but he respects the notion to come soon.

The hill nears, marking his final destination, or at least he'd thought.

The man cheers, embarking on his carnal resignation, or so he's been taught.

Alas the glorious sight, the end he'd been looking for.

Egad the nefarious night, it denies all that he looks for.

The sight clears, revealing all that he wanted.

Water, nourishment, riches, mates and residence.

The night nears, concealing all that he needed.

Wafers, cherishment, niches, mates and reluctance.

It's not exactly what was promised, not after the first glance.

Little scars and injuries, marking the imperfections of his paradise.

It's not precisely that it was cherished, not after the first millennia.

He's waited years and years, alas it has aged away, signs of decay.

Joy mixed with mounting despair, happiness jabbed with needles of depression.

Unsuccessfully he fights it away, trying to see the light underwater.

Sometimes he can ignore it, let the honey flow and gems glow.

Most times he can adore it, let the emotions build and pain gild.

Scars of his monumental journey, unappreciated by the inhabitants of this utopia.

At least he is home, he consoles himself-alas home is where his heart lies.

Stars in the moonless night, denied sanctuary by the might of Andromeda.

At last he is home, where his control may falter-alas home is where his heart bleeds.

At first it's the little things, the lack of certain food he likes.

Next it's the irrelevant things, the overabundance of something he dislikes.

What to do when major problems come along, rolling down the hill as they've done before?

What can he do when lesser comforts go aloft, leaving him in the chill as they've done before?

Horrors of many faces, nightmares enough to chill the undead.

Terrors of many faces, neighbors of the damned, the eternal dead.

He has sought but one thing, that one place to call home.

He has naught but one thing, his own body, sanity long gone.

What is sanity, he asks, what does it mean to be alive?

He knows not the answer, nor does he expect to find it anytime soon.

What is insanity, he counters, why do I have to be alive?

He knows not the answer, but he respects the notion to come soon.

Only time will tell, when the tree that tells has fully grown.

Only he will sell, his black, charred soul filled with memories.

Not for salvation, nor for the elation of his fallen comrades.

But for elevation, the evolution of his shared species.

As he always preached, "All for one, one for All."
