The peace treaties that officially brought ww1 to a bitter end contained many of the seeds of a larger conflict that raged from 1939-45. Germany lost its great empire, had east Prussia cut off by the polish corridor and to put the cheery on top they were forced to pay HUGE reparations . The old austra-Hungarian and ottoman empires were broken up into much smaller states. Among the allies. Italy was disappointed not to have greater territorial rewards while Japan felt that its emergence as a world power had not been properly recognized . And last but not least there was Russia . The 1917 Bolshevik revolution led to its leaving war. But by then Russia had been racked by civil war. After a short wind attempt to spread communism to Europe , the ussr turned in on itself , weak governments and unstable economy began to polarize political opinion to the left and right in a number of countries. It was the right that won out Italy, Germany and Japan. By the early 1930's Mussolini,hitler and the Japanese were hell bent on expansion. Japan seized manuchuria and went on to invade china. Italy overran Abyssinia and after bringing Austria into the Germans fold hitler set out to dismember czechoslovia. The western democrats pinned their hopes of peace on the League of Nations and disarmament. The former proved to be gravely flawed. The USA didn't join in because it lacked the means to keep the peace. As its failure to halt Japanese and italian aggression shown. Economic depression precipitated by the 1929 Wall Street crash Also played its part in the epic fail. Mutual suspicion eventually eventually proved the stumbling block to disarmament, Britain and France were forced to rearm. But they still hoped that appeasing the dictators might avert major war. Espiscally since the Spanish civil war revealed the true monstrousitys of modern warfare.
