Long ago, humans and Pokemon used to live together in peace. The Pokemon that still roam the world only know that the humans left the world, leaving just remnants of their civilization behind.

The Pokemon mind, at first a simple mechanism, has evolved beyond its original design thanks to the Pokemons' interactions with their human masters. Most Pokemon still long for that connection and get it from the only place they can: other Pokemon. Some of them are able to safely interact with those that normally consider them prey, while others began forming bands of mixed species to work together for their survival.

Along with garnering more intelligence from their human counterparts, they gained a sense of right and wrong, and developed a stronger sense of emotion such as kindness and empathy. The opposite was also true: some Pokemon opted to fend for themselves. Others sought to gain more power to control those around them for their own purposes.

It has however been so long that most of the creatures today have only a vague knowledge or memory that humans ever existed. The so-called "ancient" beings are now only learned of through stories spread by word of mouth.

Recently, some Pokemon have been able to find caches of human knowledge. A very select few have begun trying to study humans in an archeological sense, digging up old books or run down machines. Some even started living in the remains of structures that had become overgrown with flora.

One Pokemon in particular, has found himself a rather cozy little cottage along the beach next to the ocean. Large trees of the Juniper Woods run along the shoreline, and not far from his home, a river meets the sea after its long journey across the land. Lazing about in the river, a small totodile floats idly along, enjoying the mostly clear weather. A storm is moving in, and he wants take advantage of the blue sky while he can.

This little blue crocodile is different from other Pokemon. Unlike most, he has grown accustomed to wearing clothes. Something about them against his scales just feels natural to him. He knows very little about the history of humans, but this particular part of them interests him and makes him feel secure.

Relaxing in the water on his back, the totodile is wearing a light brown pair of pants barely held in place by a red sash tied around his waist. Were it not for the ridges along the top of his thick tail, it's likely he would have lost his pants a long time ago. Tied around his neck is his favorite article of clothing, a bandana-like scarf; three shades of blue and white intertwine with each other to create the illusion of the water surface of a lake, complete with waves.

The crocodile is more or less happy with things the way they are. He occasionally sprays water up into the air just to enjoy the sound of it splashing back down onto the water's surface, or kicks his feet just to feel the water swishing between his clawed toes.

"Hm?" The sound of leaves crunching under foot catches his attention. Looking up at the shoreline toward the sound, he watches and waits. A moment later, a flash of yellow whizzes between the trees. "Interesting..." the totodile says to himself, and starts to follow the figure down river.

It's not long before more voices can be heard:

"He went this way!"

"Jeez he's fast..."

"Shut up and catch up to him!"

The totodile can only conclude that whoever the yellow colored Pokemon is, the local gangs are after it for some reason. "So much for enjoying the weather before the storm gets here." he tells himself in disappointment.

Whoever this Pokemon is, they must have done something to really anger the gangs. The gangs almost never come this far down river. The totodile smiles, glad to see someone upsetting them so much. He's never liked them: they're always causing problems for the local Pokemon.

The crocodile speeds off down river to get ahead of the one being chased; anyone willing to stand up the gangs is worth helping out. With a giant leap, he bursts forth from the water, flying straight at the yellow figure. "Aaand gotcha!!" He tackles the poor thing, the pair tumbling to the ground. "Ooh, a jolteon! Never met one'a you b'fore!" he says. Before the electric type can react, the totodile yanks on a rock, and the ground nearby gives way. "In ya' go!" he declares, then pushes the vulpine into the hole and hops in himself before it closes up on its own.

The jolteon scrambles to his feet, breathing heavily and glaring at the little water type. The hackles on his neck stand on end. He doesn't even notice the steps of his assailants running passed overhead as he lowers his front half to protect himself. "What do you want from me?!" he growls at the reptile, sparks lighting up his body, though weakly.

Jumping back, the totodile hides behind a small boulder. "Hey, hey! I saved you! You're in one of my hideaways." Waving a hand out to one side from behind the boulder, he then pokes his head out. "Put the sparks away and I'll talk, but I'm not coming out of here until you do." He tightens the bandana around his neck uncomfortably. "Jeez... Try to save a guy and he threatens to zap ya."

In all truth, the jolteon couldn't have shocked the water type if he tried to. Already the electricity surrounding him is fading, and it appears that he is struggling to stay on his feet. "Who are you..?" he demands, trying to sound intimidating in his weakened state. Already his vision is blurring as his strength begins to ebb away.

With the sparks gone, the totodile hops up on top of the boulder, happily bouncing from one foot to the other. He might have a new friend after all. "Name's Moto. And this..." He pauses to stamp his foot on the boulder. "Is one of my hideouts. Never know when the Breloom Brothers will come looking for a fight. Or Sceptile's gang." He shrugs. "They've been getting more bold lately so I made some places to hide for a quick getaway." He then hops down and tilts his head curiously, still smiling. "And who are you? Why were you being chased?"

Eying the totodile suspiciously, the jolteon watches closely trying to gauge whether or not the little reptile is sincere. Before he can decide however, his body gives out on him. He's been still for too long now, and the flow of adrenaline leaves him. His knees weaken. "Ooooh..."he groans. Without the surge of energy pumping through him, the electric fox stumbles slightly before he finally slumps to the floor unconscious.

"Huh." Moto blinks a few times, staring at the unconscious vulpine. After a moment, he rolls his eyes with an amused grin. "Well all right then." Slipping himself beneath the jolteon and lifting him,he begins carrying the fox deeper into the tunnels toward his home.
