#1 of The Malefor Chronicles

Well, here is another sequel to The Spyro Chronicles. This tells the story of how Malefor manages to gain the Dragon's trust again. It will take a while and will take some great journeys and feats to do so. He isn't wanted here, and it will take a lot to change that. And to top it all off, his worst enemies are the Dragon Realms Greatest heroes, Spyro and Cynder! This story won't be too long, maybe 5-15 chapters, but it will bridge the 5 year gap between The Spyro Chronicles and The Spyro Wars. This will also be my first non-militaristic story so let's see how this one turns out.

The Malefor Chronicles

Chapter 1: Unwanted Guest

Dragon Realms, Uncharted System

April 2, 2204

0927 Hours

Mushroom Forest surrounding the Dragon Temple

A rain cloud came overhead and a bit of rain fell onto the ground. The mushrooms provided an excellent umbrella for a lone dragon who walked through the rain. Even so, he chose to walk in the rain. He didn't deserve the mushrooms. He didn't even know why he was walking to where he was. Nobody wanted him. Everybody wanted him dead. After all, who would want the Dark Master as part of their society? He'd probably be better off dead.

The purple dragon, Malefor, walked through the rain and sobbed. He had killed so many as the Dark Master and he didn't think anyone would forgive him for what he had done.

He looked up into the sky and saw the Dragon Temple perched on the cliff. He was almost at the base of the cliff. He took flight and went around behind the temple. He landed in a patch of mushrooms and noticed that it wasn't raining over here. He heard giggling, laughing. He crawled through a few mushrooms until he reached the edge. He was looking at the garden and he saw several young dragons running about, playing tag. Oh, how he loved to play tag as a youngling... even though he was about 14 years of age, those days seemed distant.

He saw one of them fall and he almost launched himself to help the young dragon but halted himself. He couldn't be seen, ever. He had to stay in the shadows. He could never be seen ever again. He sighed. He felt so wrong. So many things wrong with him... a tear fell from his eyes as he remembered back to his days as the Dark Master. He heard a new voice and looked up. He went pale with fear.

There, standing amongst the younglings were Spyro and Cynder. He had to stay hidden now or else they'd kill him for sure. He had done so many horrible things to Spyro and Cynder that they would never forgive him. He backed off slowly from the edge of the mushrooms and curled up into a fetal position. He didn't know what to do. If he was spotted, they'd kill him. If he didn't find food he would grow hungry.

He pulled himself together and took a peek again at the dragons. Spyro and Cynder had joined in their game of tag and were running around, carefree. Oh how he wanted to join them. He never understood why he was forced to live a life like he had. All he ever wanted was to do good and then all of a sudden he started to do evil. He sighed. The laughing stopped.

"I think I heard something." Spyro said.

"Sounds like it came from the brush." Cynder said in return. Malefor went pale. He had to get out of here, NOW. He picked himself up and darted away. He heard the flapping of wings and knew that he was being followed. He went through the mushrooms, feeling the fear wash over him. After all these years, it was ironic that now he was being hunted by the very being he had been hunting.

Malefor stopped dead in his tracks. A boulder was in his way and he was trapped. He heard wings behind him and turned swiftly to see Spyro land behind him. Malefor was in the shade so Spyro didn't see his purple scales.

"Hey, why were you running?" spyro asked. Malefor froze in fear. He didn't respond.

"Hello? Who are you? Why aren't you back at the temple?" Malefor started to panic. He tried to lie. Tell him he was just running when he started to stutter. He looked around franticly for an escape route and spotted a small cave etched into the rock. He franticly ran to it and entered. It was so small that he had to nearly crawl to get into it.

"Hey wait! I just want to talk! Where are you going?" Malefor could still hear Spyro talking behind him. He was so scared he was crying. He had to get away. Finally he came out into an opened up pocked inside of the rock. It was just big enough for him to stand up and stretch his wings. He decided that this would have to be his new home. He curled up into a ball and fell asleep.

Outside the cave, Spyro stood dumbfounded. The new dragon he had just encountered had almost freaked out when he saw Spyro. Had Spyro done something or said something wrong? He had never seen this dragon before so that couldn't have been the case.

"Spyro?" Cynder flew down next to Spyro.

"Who was that?" She asked.

"I don't know... he just ran away as soon as I asked him that question. He darted into that small cave."

"Well shouldn't we follow?" She asked.

"No, I have seen that cave before... it leads into a small pocket inside of the rock. Whoever went in there, he's trapped in there so it wouldn't matter if we gave chase." Cynder frowned and took flight. Spyro sighed and followed. Whoever this newcomer was, he was scared to death of Spyro, though he didn't know why.

Malefor lay in his dreams. He dreamt that he was back in his own time, amongst his mother and father. He remembered his mother, her blue scales shining in the sun. He didn't have many memories of his father. He did know that his father was blue with a white underbelly. His father's eyes were also golden. His mother rarely talked of him, though when she did, it was usually something good. It sounded like his father was always off doing something, though he never knew why or where. When he did see his father, he always took him in and comforted him. The last time he had seen his father was before he turned evil. After that, he never saw him again.

Malefor started to come to. He awoke from his slumber and looked around. His small cave seemed all the smaller to him. It felt like a prison that he could never escape. Punishment for his past deeds. He heard the pitter patter of rain outside and new that it had started to rain there as well. He sighed and stretched. The cave was dimly lit so his purple scales seemed to take on a more sinister dark appearance like they had all these years.

His stomach growled. He groaned. He hadn't eaten anything in a while. He slowly crawled out of the cave and out into the cloudy afternoon. It was raining, almost a downpour. The entrance to the cave was elevated so the water didn't flow into it. There was also a mushroom cap that sat in front of the entrance so that shielded him from the rain. He looked out and saw the roof of the dragon temple above the mushrooms. He was so close yet so far from it. He turned his head to the ground as he thought of how he was going to deal with them. Most of them wanted him dead. Though he wondered if any of them would recognize him. They probably would. Either they would instantly recognize him or would question why a second purple dragon was sneaking around the temple.

He drifted his head a bit and saw a mushroom cap filled with berries sitting next to the entrance. He saw a bit of writing in the dirt: "From Spyro. Whoever you are, don't run next time. Let's talk."

He sniffed. His worst enemy was sending him an invite to talk. Oh how he loathed the thought of facing him. The very thought of facing Spyro racked his mind. Spyro would surly recognize him and kill him. After all he had put Spyro through; trying to make it up to him was out of the question. He grabbed the cap and sat down. He started eating the berries. They tasted wonderful. How could something provided by someone he had tried to kill taste so good? He didn't deserve these berries. They came from someone who despised him. However, he needed the food so he kept eating.

He finished the berries and lay under the mushroom cap. The scent of rain came into his nostrils and he felt the water splatter his scales. He saw something shimmer in the distance. He squinted his eyes and saw a spent shell casing sitting in the rain. It had probably come from a human M74D Assault weapon. Many had been used in the conflict a few weeks ago and that spent casing was just a reminder of what he had done to these realms.

He heard a bit of foot steps near by and he darted into the cave entrance. He sat to where he could see outside. A small youngling ran out into the rain, followed by an older one.

"Come back here! Don't run out into the rain!"

"But its fun!"

"Well if you go too far, the Dark Master will come and get you!"

"That mean ol' Dark Master can't get me!"

"Yes he can! He hunts little dragons and gets them when they least expect it. Then he takes them and turns them into his slaves..." The older dragoness said. She added emphasis to it to scare the little one. The little dragon shrieked and began to shake at the thought of it.

Malefor was about to let out a shriek as well. A few tears fell down his cheeks and he felt a lump in his chest. His throat ran dry and he wanted to scream. Was this really how the dragons thought of him? How many scary stories had been written of him to scare little ones to sleep at night? Now it was surely impossible for him to get any allies now. His only ally was Spyro, and Spyro didn't even know who he was helping. That, and Malefor had already tried to kill him twice. Once Spyro learned just who he was, he would turn his back on Malefor. He sniffed and a low whimper escaped his maw. The two dragons outside heard this.

"What was that?" The older dragoness said.

"Maybe it's the Dark Master..." The little one said, cowering near the older dragoness. The dragoness lead the smaller one away and they went back to the temple. The rain had come down to a drizzle by now, yet Malefor's heart felt like a down pour of sadness. Waterfalls of tears ran down his cheeks and he slammed his fist into the dirt.

He picked up one of his talons and looked it over. Its sharp point had been used to kill many. He could recall at least 9 dragons that had been mortally wounded by this specific talon.

He ran the talon along his other arm and cringed as he felt pain. He sank the talon into his skin more a small trickle of blood came from the wound. Though it was punishment. He deserved to die a horrible death for all atrocities that he had committed towards the dragons and to the Marine Battalion that had been stationed here only days before. At least the Marines were gone. They would have been patrolling this whole area and would have run into him by now. And he didn't think they would have spared him either.

He sighed and crawled out of the cave. He took a sip of rain water that had fallen onto the ground. It wasn't a healthy thing to do, but how cared. He deserved to suffer.

He looked into the puddle and saw his reflection. His purple scales reflected a bit of light and his purple eyes looked back at him. He was a purple dragon, destined to leave his mark on the age and bring hope to all the creatures. So far he had only slaughtered every dragon and human he had come across. He had soiled the prophesy he was supposed to fill. Spyro, on the other hand, had fulfilled the prophesy and was a true purple dragon. He was only a fraud. Maybe he should confront Spyro. Spyro could finish the job and rid the world of this pain that was Malefor. He deserved nothing but death. After all, who would show him mercy? Nobody, that's who.

He walked off towards the temple. He had to find more food anyways. Besides, by going to the temple and confronting Spyro, he would fulfill the prophesy. Only by his death would it be done.

As he neared the temple, he saw a fruit lying on the ground. He ate it and felt his stomach demand more. He looked out and saw another fruit lying in the middle of the garden. Nobody was around and the coast was clear. Malefor slowly left the protection of the mushrooms and walked over to the fruit. He picked it up and was about to eat it when he went pale. He heard foot steps behind him. He turned sharply and felt his heart drop into his stomach and his body go cold.

Spyro the dragon stood there, eyeing him over. Spyro had a look of shock on him. After all, before now, Spyro was the only purple dragon. They stared at each other for a few seconds before Malefor dropped the apple.

Malefor began to turn to run.

"Wait, hold on! Who are you?" Spyro asked. Malefor stopped. He didn't recognize him? Even if he didn't, why was he helping him? Spyro caught up to him.

"Wait, what's your name? Are you another purple dragon?" He asked him.

"I... I don't know..." Malefor lied. He couldn't tell him the truth. If he told him the truth, he would surely kill him.

"You don't know your name? Where did you come from then?"

"I... don't know... I just appeared in the forest and came here..." Part of that was the truth. At that moment another dragon came beside Spyro. It was Cynder. Malefor felt a ping of fear wash over him. His body went cold and he began to tremble.

"Spyro, who's this? I thought there was only supposed to be one purple dragon?"

"I thought so as well... he cant remember his name so I don't know it."

"Wait a second... he looks familiar..." Cynder commented.

"He does, doesn't he?" Spyro said, looked at Malefor again.

"WAIT! I have seen him before! He works for the Dark Master!" Cynder screamed. Spyro turned and had a look of anger in his eyes.

"So... without your master you came here to blend in did you?"

"No... I-"

"Shut it! I know what you have done! I have seen you kill dozens of helpless dragons while under the Dark Master's control! You're just as evil as him!"

"No... I would never-" Cynder launched at him. He rolled to the side and ran off. He stumbled as he ran and hit a crate filled with fruit. He recovered just in time to avoid a ball of fire.

Cynder leapt again, but was stopped by Spyro.

"Wait, what if he's good now, like you."

"He's not like me... I have seen him a lot. He was with the Dark Master a lot. He has killed worse then me... he was as bad as the Dark Master himself... He may even be his son. We have to stop him Spyro. He's evil! I feel the Dark Master in him!" Spyro looked out and saw Malefor running down a pathway that ran along the side of the dragon temple. It was covered by a patio built from metal from UERNF Raven fighters. Crates of fruits were stacked there and several dragons and dragoness walked down the path and were surprised to see a small purple dragon get chased by Spyro and Cynder.

"Stop him!" Cynder yelled. Some dragons tried to catch Malefor but he dodged and managed to avoid capture. He saw a shadow fly over head and a dragon landed directly in his path. It was Spyro. Malefor came to a dead halt and cringed in fear at the sight of Spyro. He felt himself being lifted into the air and he landed in a stack of crates. He slowly picked himself up and saw Cynder approaching. She grabbed his muzzle and brought it to hers.

"So, why'd you run if you are not evil? Where's your master? I can feel him inside of you! I know you work for him, I have seen you before!"

"No... I don't work for the Dark Master!"

"LIAR!" She yelled. She smashed his face into a crate and the wood smashed against his muzzle. He felt the splinters go through the cracks in his scales and puncture his skin. His muzzle was a bit bruised and she continued to smack his head into the crate.

"Tell me now! Where is he?!" She yelled. Malefor looked with pleading eyes towards Spyro who just watched. Spyro trusted Cynder which meant he wasn't about to help his enemy. Cynder then stopped hitting his face into the wood and threw him into the dirt. He landed hard and Spyro and Cynder encircled him.

"Tell us now and save yourself the trouble. We can help free you of the Dark Master. We just need you to help us."

"I don't work for him I already said!" Malefor screamed at the top of his lungs.

"You lie!" Cynder leapt at Malefor again and he curled up into a ball. He heard a thump and opened his eyes to see an Earth dragoness nail Cynder in mid-air and send her into the ground. The Earth dragoness pinned Cynder to the ground and Spyro leapt and knocked her off. The dragoness yelped but bit Spyro's forearm. Spyro let out a wail of pain and Malefor staggered to his feet. He had to help her. He opened his mouth and a ball of dark energy flew out and hit Cynder in the chest. She hit the wall, fell to the ground and didn't get back up. Spyro saw this and looked at Malefor.

"You do work for the Dark Master!" He claimed. He blew a fire ball at Malefor and he braced himself. He felt the heat wash over him and he flew into another stack of crates. He slowly picked himself up and saw Spyro charge up a ball of light. His eyesight was becoming blurred. He saw something hit Spyro before he launched the ball and the figures fell over. He tried to focus his vision; see what was going on. However, he failed and passed out.

Malefor awoke several hours later. He was sitting inside of a small cave. It was bigger then his own, giving him room to fully stretch his wings and move around. Though it wasn't too big that he felt small. It was just right. A glowing purple gemstone was imbedded into the wall, giving the cave light. At first, Malefor thought it was a dark crystal. However, it just turned out to be a purple gemstone. Besides, with the activation of the Final Solution, the Plague were no longer able to come back through the crystals.

He smelt smoke nearby and walked into another chamber of the cave. There was a waterfall on the other side of the massive chamber. It created a small pond inside the cave, but also concealed the entrance. There was a small fire lit near his side of the cave. There were cooked meats next to it and he saw a small figure next to the fire.

"I see you're awake." A dragoness said.

"Who are you? Why are you helping me?" Malefor inquired. The dragoness was an Earth Dragoness. She was black with a green underbelly and she had two horns in the back of her head that went back and came up. Her muzzle was pointed a bit and she had green eyes.

"My name is Eatherine. I have been watching you. I saw you appear in the forest and I have been watching you since. I also heard what Spyro and Cynder were saying about you when they were fighting you. From what I have seen, you have done no wrong. You have only been trying to survive. It was wrong of Spyro and Cynder to accuse you of that. However, it is odd for another purple dragon to just turn up. If I remember correctly, there is only supposed to be one purple dragon born every ten generations."

Malefor looked at the ground. At least he had one ally. One dragon that was giving him a chance. Though she did suspect something amiss in him.

"So what is your name?" She asked.

"I... don't remember..." He lied. He knew that if he told her his name was Malefor that she would know just who he was.

"You don't remember do you? What do you remember then?" She asked.

"I remember being somewhere... dark... and then I appeared here."

"Not really much information to go by, though it does help fit the puzzle together. Cynder did say you worked for the Dark Master for a long time. Maybe that darkness was when you worked for him and now you were released."

"Yeah... I guess so..." He could never tell her about that he did remember everything. He remembered killing thousands of innocent dragons. He remembered slaughtering them and laughing at the idea of it. It was a sickening thought.

"Well, you should remain here. Spyro and Cynder aren't happy that I helped you. They already got other dragons helping them look for you." She got up and started to leave the cave.

"What about you? Aren't they after you for helping me?"

"I can manage. You, however, aren't really in any shape to fight. Just eat and rest. I'll be back later." She said as she left the cave. She went through the waterfall and outside.

Malefor sighed. At least one person trusted him. Even if she held some doubt, it was a start. He looked at the fire and noted a cooked sheep lying there. He grabbed it and started to eat it. It tasted so good. He hadn't eaten something like that in years, literally. He savored the meat in his mouth and almost gulped it down.

He heard voices outside and wondered if he should go outside and see what it was. He thought better of it since he knew Spyro and Cynder were out looking for him. He sighed and lay down to sleep. He thought better of it and walked back into the room where he had awoken in. If they found the cave, he would have better security if he slept in that room. Once again he lay down onto the ground and fell asleep.

Eatherine walked outside of the cave. The cave was hidden by a waterfall from a branch off of the Silver River. They were close to the temple, but not too close. She saw Spyro flying overhead and sighed. They were looking for that new purple dragon. She didn't know who he was, but she didn't feel that he was bad. After all, he seemed to be deathly afraid of Spyro and Cynder and didn't look like he would be able to harm anyone.

Eatherine took flight and went to the dragon temple. She landed and found the dragons trying to repair the area that had been damaged in the fight. The Market was a mess, stuff lay everywhere and the dragons grumbled as they tried to pick up fruits and other stuff. She walked over to a dragon who was running a fruit stand.

"Can I buy some fruits?" She asked.

"Sure, how much you got?" The dragon asked. She handed him a few golden gems, the new currency, and he gave her a few fruits in return.

"Thanks!" She said as she took flight again. She went near the cave and saw Spyro land in front of her.

"Wait! You were the one helping that purple dragon! Where is he?" He growled.

"I took care of him for you guys... there's nothing to worry about."

"Don't trust him Eatherine... he's evil, we can feel the Dark Master's energy all over him. He works for him, we just know it!"

"Well how do you know that for sure?"

"Can't you feel the darkness all over him?"

"No, I cannot. Why can't you guys give him a chance! Cynder returned to good once the Dark Master's control was lifted from her! Why wouldn't it be the same for this guy! He hasn't done any wrong as far as I'm concerned!"

"Cynder has seen him before. He has seen him working for the Dark Master. He's corrupted! We can feel the Dark Master all over him."

"I have been watching that dragon since he appeared here shortly after the Dark Master was defeated. He hasn't done anything wrong, and as far as I can tell, he's just trying to get by here." She said before taking off to the cave.

"You don't know what you're doing Eatherine! He's evil!" Spyro yelled after her. She ignored it and flew off. She came to the cave and made sure there was nobody watching. She entered the waterfall and into the secret cavern. She came into the rear room to find Malefor asleep.

He didn't look evil. He sort of looked like Spyro in a way. He might have been evil, but she didn't feel any evil from him. He seemed like a nice guy. He only lay asleep. He twitched a bit, which got a little chuckle from Eatherine. She set fruit down and went to the other side of the cave and fell asleep.

End of Chapter 1

Well that was the first chapter; the second won't be too far off. Thought I would release this as well. I am excited to see how this one turns out. This one I hope to go deeper into the character's feelings. This is also the first story that I have ever seen where Spyro and Cynder are the central antagonists of the story. Will Malefor eventually have to fight them again? If so, how will it turn out? How will he gain their trust?
