(My thanks to Kausn_husky for agreeing to help me with this story, all of the characters in this story are mine, however, Sergeant Lucas Doyle has been given over to Kausn, as hopefully he will be able to add something to the story)

The Yale City police department that day was a chaotic mess of hurrying furs, papers scattered across every desk, and police sirens blaring outside. I remember that day well, hearing the names over the police radio, while waiting in my cruiser for further instructions from the chief.

"Attention all units, shots fired and two officers are down, Sergeant Todd Marshall and Sergeant Trisha Colman."

I look at the radio, cringing at both the names I heard. I had known both of them, but I had known Todd more, even though I'm sure he didn't know me. I had always admired that fox from a distance, never gaining the courage to just go up and talk to the guy. I had heard about his achievements with the force, and boy was I impressed. Now the guy was injured, and so was his partner. I wanted to rush to the hospital and see him, but I knew I shouldn't do that. That was the last thing he needed, a secret admirer coming into his hospital room after he'd been shot. Plus, I still had a job to do. I started my car and pulled out of the lot, Captain Myers coming over the radio.

_"Units 53 and 26, please head back to the station." _The silence that followed was deafening, my mind focusing more on Todd and Trisha instead of driving my patrol car. I begin the drive back to the station, Todd never leaving my mind for more than a moment. The route back to the station will take me down Highway 4, a road that has its own bad memories for me.

Before I realized it, I was getting close to the spot on Highway 4 that changed my life forever. I shuddered from the tips of my ears to my tail, horrific memories flooding back to me all at once; memories I was trying to forget. It was too late now, rolling down Highway 4 at seventy miles an hour.

It was only five years ago, I was such a young and naive Doberman then. I had only been with the force just over a month, and I thought the world was mine for the taking. I was a hotshot cop, looking for trouble, wanting that big crime to solve or wanting to take down steadfast robbers in an exhilarating car chase. It angered me that it was all training, paperwork, ride-alongs; never the real thing. When I finally did get the keys to my own patrol car, it didn't take me long to get in over my head. Highway 4 had been notorious for high speed chases in our area, so naturally that was the first place I had staked out. It took me only 10 minutes to find someone doing nearly 100 mph down that stretch of highway. I didn't bother radioing in to the station; I just took after the red convertible. I flipped on the switch to the sirens and lights, the smile across my muzzle shining brighter than the mid-day sun. I pulled the car over uneventfully, to my dismay, to the right side of the highway. That was my first mistake. My second mistake was opening my door and putting a foot out without checking my surroundings. I didn't pull far enough off, and the semi was riding the white line. I had no time to react, my car door being ripped from its hinges and blown out onto the highway. The red roadster sped off, my first real crime pulling away from me, and I didn't even know it.

I looked down at my left leg, rubbing it as I had done many times before, feeling nothing but plastic and metal underneath my uniform. I had blacked out moments after that truck took off my door, and my leg. I was lucky that I was in such a hurry I had forgotten to unbuckle my seatbelt, otherwise I'm sure I wouldn't have just lost my leg. My leg felt of plastic and metal, but it still looked like a real leg, like nothing had ever happened. You couldn't tell it wasn't a real Doberman leg until you touched it, or saw a very small seam where my real fur and the fake fur overlapped. The fake fur even followed my real furs pattern. It was really quite astonishing, if it wasn't overshadowed by the fact that I had lost my leg in the first place. I kept driving, tears in my eyes as that memory came flooding back. I drove by the exact spot where the incident happened, but I couldn't allow myself to look over.

By the time I reached the station I had calmed down, but my mind still wouldn't let go of the thought of Todd. Even as I got out of my patrol car and the smells of the city night life hit me, I still couldn't shake Todd from my mind. Every fibre of my being was praying that he and Trisha were fine; that in a week's time they'd be back on the streets preventing crime as they always had.

I walk into the station just as Captain Myers is calling everyone into the squad room, so now I know that something ain't right, the short fur on the back of my neck begins to stand on end as I head towards the squad room. With everyone now inside the Captain asks the last one through the door to close it. The sound of silence now fills the room as we notice that the Captain is wearing a very sombre look. The Captain finally lets out a jagged sigh.

"Okay guys, I'm sure that you have all heard about the armed robbery at O'Malley's jewellery store, I'm also sure that you all heard that there were shots fired and that two officers, Todd Marshall and Trisha Colman, were down, it is my sad duty to inform you all that Sergeant Patricia Colman was fatally wounded. As for Todd Marshall he is now in a hospital bed, probably paralysed from the waist down"

Tears begin to run from the Captains eyes, he tries to compose himself to continue.

"I know that a lot of you knew Trisha well and loved her for who she was, I've no need to tell you all this but there is a very big hole that has just been ripped into this station, she will be sorely missed"

With that the Captain breaks down in tears and is led away from the shocked gathering, I have never been much of a drinker but upon hearing the news I storm from the squad room with tears in my eyes and I head to the closest bar.

I sit at a table nursing a glass of Scotch but not really paying any interest to it, so many thoughts are racing through my head, I know that being a cop in this day and age means that we all run the real risk of being shot, but god damn it, Trisha still had her whole life ahead of her, a new boyfriend and two wonderful boys whom she idolised. Then my thoughts centre on the Fox of my dreams, Todd, I know that I need to go and see him in hospital, to be with him, but I also know that he will be one very angry Vulpine.

I finish my drink and then head for home, oh sure I still have an hour left of my duty, but right now I couldn't care less about that, there is also something else that is true, and that is that if I go back to the station now I will make a bee line for the holding cells, and I won't be responsible for my actions.

I take my cell phone from my jacket pocket, I check the display for any missed calls, I have three from dispatch obviously trying to locate me, I also have a missed call from Captain Myers, normally he would be the one person whose call I would return without fail, this time however, I just ignore it and then switch off my phone.

I eventually arrive home to a ringing phone, unfortunately the landline is one phone that I can't switch off, so I just ignore it and head straight for my bed.

The following morning and I am woken by the sound of hammering on the door of my apartment, I don't need ESP or Clairvoyance to know who it is, Captain Alonso Myers. Having spent the night crying myself to sleep my energy is at an all time low, but I know that I am going to have to face the Horse sooner or later.

I head down to the door just as another round of hammering begins, I slowly open the door and there he is, 6'8" of Horse, I stand aside to allow him into my apartment, he walks in and dumps his butt onto one of the sofas that are situated in the main room.

"You know Lucas, I should chew your ass out for going absent without leave last night, and I should rip your goddamn head off for not returning or answering my calls, but I can't do either of those things because I know that you and Trish were pretty close"

I hang my head a little but then I regain my composure.

"I'm sorry for going AWOL but the thing is for me yesterday was a double hit"

The Captain interrupts my reply.

"Yes I know that Todd Marshall was also injured in the shooting and that we should be wor..."

I shake my head and break into his conversation.

"No Captain, you don't fucking understand at all, I have feelings for Todd Marshall, and when I heard about him and Colman being gunned down I went into depression, that depression got worse when I found out the Trish didn't make it, but still my thoughts drifted back to Todd"

The Captain sits there with a shocked look on his face.

"You mean to tell me that you are gay and that you have fallen for Marshall?"

I sigh and nod a little.

"To be honest Captain I have had these feelings for quite some time, I just have never had the guts to admit it, the thing is though sir, I can help Todd out, please I beg of you make me his new partner"

The Captain looks at his watch.

"If it had been anyone else asking this there would have been no way in hell that I would allow it, I mean Todd won't be back on active duty for quite a few months, if he comes back at all, but I know that you have suffered with disability yourself, and so you know how much pain and hell he is going to be going through, and so with that in mind I will partner you with Todd Marshall. Now I am going to see Marshall in hospital so I gotta get going, but I will make sure that he knows that I am willing to give him all the help he needs, as for your AWOL last night, I seem to have lost the duty roster and so I'm going to have to make up a new one"

A small smile spreads across the Captain's muzzle as he stands from the sofa; he heads towards the door and then looks back at me.

"Todd and Trish were quite the double act, you have some pretty big boots to fill, I just hope and pray that you are up to the task"

With that the Captain vanishes through my front door and closes it behind him, I then head to where my jacket is hanging and I take out my cell phone and switch it back on, I guess it is time that I rejoined civilisation.
