Thomas House

Ch.1 No longer Homeless

A Drunken Wolf Production

The waiting room chairs were cold and hard making Zack shift uncomfortably from cheek to cheek as he waited in the lobby. The small fox sighed looking around at the other furs and reptiles inside the gay and lesbian help center that were seeking assistance. Zack slipped his arms into his shirt and crossed them trying to stay as warm as possible while the staff behind the desk went over paper work for completion. Every now and then a tall female cheetah would poke her head out from a door to the side and call out a name. Zack watched a flamboyantly dressed rabbit stand up as the cheetah called out the next name on her clipboard.

Zack tried to peek around her to see what was on the other side of the doorway. The fox petted his tail softly straitening the split ends at the tip. He was glad his old case worker had filed his paper work for him. The great dane that was at the counter was growing annoyed as the hippo behind the counter addressed what documents he was missing. Zack tapped his foot paws on the cold white floor wishing his name would be called already. It had taken him weeks to get this meeting scheduled. He only had his empty wallet and the clothes on his back. He leaned forward in his chair as the tall cheetah opened the door and stuck her head out.

"Zack Serix," she called out looking around the room at all in attendance.

The fox stood and slipped his arms back through the holes in his shirt and padded to the open door. He looked around curiously as he padded over the brown carpeted hallway past the closed doors behind the cheetah. She stopped at an open door where a lion was typing at a Mac computer. He looked up and nodded to the chair as the cheetah closed the door behind the fox. Zack padded over and took a seat watching the lion type rapidly peering into his screen through circled frames. The fox looked around the room reading a few of the posters that hung from the walls. Most of them were "Your gay and loved" or "Don't be afraid to say "I'm gay". He sighed wishing it was that easy. He had came out to his parents and received the boot with nothing but the clothes on his back. He knew his father was capable of doing something like that, but he thought for sure his mom had his back. She didn't say a thing that night as his father yelled and called him "fag" and "a disappointment". He sighed watching the lion causing the black mane cat to look up.

"Good morning Zack. I'll be your new case worker Mr. Brewer. I've already been in contact with your old case worker Mrs. Sanders and I have a few programs I'd like to talk to you about. First off, how are you today?" he asked leaning back in your chair taking off his reading glasses.

"I'm ok I guess," Zack said crossing his paws and staring blankly at the edge of the lion's desk.

The lion clicked a few things with his mouse then looked back at the fox.

"Are you still staying at the West side homeless shelter?"

"Yea. Its not the best place in the world but I'm happy to have a place to stay," he murmured avoiding eye contact.

"Hmm...Are you getting enough to eat Zack? Do you need any hygiene items," the lion asked leaning forward placing his paws on the desk.

"I get three meals. All I have is the travel supply kit they gave me," he said looking up sadly catching the lion's green eyes.

The lion reached behind his desk and pulled out a small brown box marked "Hygiene" and set it in front of the fox.

"I've got some good news for you that should make you feel better. I've been talking with Mr. Thomas about you and he thinks he can help you. He allows three males to live in his home rent free until your able to get on your feet. He and his mate own a two story four bedroom house on the east side of town and would be willing to move you in today. I'm proud to say their last member moved out and is doing quite well for himself. Would this be something your interested in Zack?" Mr. Brewer said smiling at the orange fox.

Zack sat up strait and nodded quickly.

"I'm thankful for the shelter but I have to get out of there," Zack said tearing up and putting his head into his paws.

"Its going to be okay Zack. I'm getting you set up with food stamps right now so you'll be able to have your own food. They have mini fridges in your rooms so you can enjoy little snacks and what not. They cook meals when there home but other than that you'll have to cook for yourself. You'll like the other two boys that are there. Sammy is a husky and Luke is a german shepard. All of them have come from similar situations and are about your age. Yep," he said looking at his screen. "Luke is 19 as well."

Zack nodded wiping his face as tears streaked down his cheek. He sighed happily and sniffed trying to control himself.

"I know you've been through a lot in the last few months but will help you get through it Zack. Your not alone okay? We also have a program funded through the state that will give you fifty dollars a month for other necessities. I'll give you hygiene items so use it to buy clothes. Mr. Thomas usually takes the guys out to do their shopping on the week end," he said turning back to his screen.

Zack couldn't help the tears welling up as the relief of not having to sleep on a cot next to fifty other men set in.

"Is there anything at the shelter you need to get. I need to drop you off before my next appointment," he said checking his watch.

"Were leaving now?" Zack choked out as the lion printed some documents standing up.

"Of course. I'm a busy lion. I've got a lot of lives to change today. Here's your food stamp paper work. When Mr. Thomas takes you to the county office to pick up your card make sure you take your I.D. Grab your box fox," Mr. Brewer said chuckling deeply at his word play.

He walked over to the door as Zack quickly got up following the lion. He checked his pockets feeling his car keys and pointed to the right.

"I think your really going to like it there Zack. Everyone in the house is gay and energetic. I think you'll learn a lot," the big lion added opening the back door to the outside.

For the first time since the day before his parents threw him out Zack smiled again as the warmth of the sun shined down on him. He breathed in the fresh air wiping away any wetness as the lion pulled his keys out and marched around to the parking lot where a row of white ford fusions were lined up. He pressed the unlock key and the closest one to the curb chirped.

"Sorry, with so many of these I forget which one is mine," he said grinning broadly.

Zack wasn't worried about that though. His tail swayed behind him slowly as he gripped the door pulling it open and climbing in beside the lion.

"Buckle up," Mr. Brewer warned putting the fox's box and paper work in the back seat.

Zack buckled his seat belt and leaned into his seat. He couldn't wait to take a shower by himself again. He hated having to stand next to the other males and pretend he was strait. He was sure they would beat him down or worse if they found out they were showering with a tail raiser. The engine cranked as the lion turned the key and the rode off in silence. Zack leaned his head against the window staring out at the view of buildings and offices passing by. Mr. Brewer looked over and gave him a thumbs up and a pat on his leg.

"Don't you worry about a thing. I think Mr. Thomas might already have a job for you as well if you can believe it. He works for UPS and might end up being your supervisor if your lucky," the lion said exited off the highway.

The fusion cruised down a residential street and to a stop sign. Zack looked out the window eagerly as they pulled in to the Thomas house. The two story red brick house was nicely manicured with trimmed grass and fresh flowers in the beds. Small bushes lined a simple cement walkway leading up to the two pole archway. Mr. Brewer stopped the car and grabbed Zack's items before stepping out of car closing the door behind him. Zack got out of the car slowly taking in the view of his new home. "It did look warm and inviting," he thought to himself as he followed the lion up the walk way. The big lion pressed the doorbell and waited until the door opened revealing a medium size grey wolf holding a flower vase. He smiled and and called over his shoulder.

"Daddy! Zack is here."

Zack took a breath as the wolf opened the door and waved them in.

"Come on in boys," the wolf said smiling happily as the stairs flooded with males thundering down the wooden stairs.

Zack folded his ears back and tucked his tail as the gang gathered in front of him in the door way.

"I'm Toven Thomas. I'll be your warden," the wolf teased holding out a paw with a toothy smile.

Zack shook his paw as a very handsome white tiger side stepped in front of Sammy.

"I'm David. I control the warden,' he said seriously shaking the fox's paw firmly.

The husky chuckled into his paw while Luke rolled his eyes.

"That ball of fluff is Sammy. The shepard is Luke. There both good boys when they behave," Mr. Thomas commented taking the fox's items from the lion as they shook paws.

"You've got to see Sammy's new 360 game. Come on," Luke said picking the fox up and carrying him off up the stairs in a powerful arm.

Mr. Brewer shook his head watching the trio bound up the stairs. David pulled the warden under his arm and kissed him softly.

"Well, it seems like they hit it off nicely," Mr. Brewer said as the upstairs door slammed shut.

"Luke has a way of making everyone get along. He has that personality," Mr. Thomas said ducking from under his mate.

"I'll leave Zack to you guys then. I know he's in safe paws. I have to jet or I'll miss my next appointment," Mr. Brewer called heading to the door.

"We'll take good care of him Jason. We promise," Toven said opening the door for the lion.

After a long session of Borderlands two and a million questions, Zack was able to go down stairs escorted by Luke to his room. The german shepard opened the door and allowed him to walk in.

"Wow. This is my room?" Zack said looking around at all the different items in the room.

A flat screen t.v rested in the corner on a nice black painted dresser. The queen size bed sat in the middle of the room with an office desk and a dell computer close by. The walls were bare but the window had nice black curtains matching the black bed spread. The closet was a fair sized walk in that housed a small mini fridge. Zack smiled feeling himself well up again.

"If you ever need anything feel free to ask. Knock first though," Luke said eying the fox.

Zack nodded smiling up at the dog. He seemed so friendly and trusting that he felt like he could tell him anything.

"Hey Zack. I'm sure you want to take a shower. Donny was an otter and left a few clothes you can wear for the time being. I washed and folded everything," Mr. Thomas said poking his head in with the stack.

"Thanks Mr. Thomas," Zack said taking the handful.

"You can call me Toven or warden or anything other than Mr. Thomas. You make me feel old," he whined getting a chuckle from the pair.

"Alright warden," Zack said setting the clothes on the dresser and patting Luke on the head.

"Come my padawan. Lets leave Zack to relax. He's been through a lot and probally needs some him time," Toven said tugging on the dog's arm. "Don't be afraid to ask for anything. We can go shopping this weekend."

Zack nodded as the pair left the room with Toven pulling the door shut.

"This is your room. Feel free to do what ever you want as long as you don't break anything. You can have company just keep it down," the wolf added closing the door.

Zack sighed happily and flopped down onto his back feeling the soft comforter underneath his body and the plump pillow under his head. He assumed the bathroom was down the hall and would shower later. He could smell the sweet savory aromas coming from the kitchen as David worked in the kitchen. He was so relieved that he was finally getting a second chance to do something with his life. He sat up and walked to the door opening it and looking for Toven. He wanted to find a phone and tell his parents he was okay now.
