The prince's new shadowCh.2 Freeing the PreyA Drunken Wolf Production "Run, please don't let them catch you. I couldn't live with myself if anything happened to you," Cervix whispered grabbing her white paw and holding it tightly in his. "Thank you so much Cervix," I'll never forget this. I swear," she whispered kissing him softly on the cheek before racing off into the forest to the east. Cervix sighed then flinched as the King and his knights skidded to a halt behind him panting heavily from their hastened pace. The king caught his breathing bending to his knees trying to catch his. He grunted then leaned up grabbing the labrador by the throat. "Where is IT!" He roared into the dog's face making him tremble in fear. "I saw her running west towards highland gulch," Cervix chocked out struggling to get his feet back on the ground. The knights stood patiently in their chain mail waiting for the king's instructions. The king looked over at them before tossing the dog down hard on the grassy earth. "Move! Now! I've never lost my prey in a hunt," he called out getting a loud cheer from his men. The great lion turned quickly spinning his flowing cape behind him before speeding off into the trees followed by his loyal group. Cervix knew it wouldn't be long before the king realized he lied and started after her again. The dog had to get prince Kota to help him save his friend. If only he had tried to save her sooner she wouldn't be running for her life in the dark underneath a full moon. Cervix knew the king would kill her once he trapped her as his custom was with the monthly hunt. He raced back towards the castle trying to formulate a plan that would save her and allow him to keep his head. He couldn't remember why he didn't tell his master soon. "What happened?" he thought as he raced against the king and his blood thirsty knights. Earlier that day

Cervix held the serving tray as the small otter master chef placed a few slices of pie and cups of fresh apple cider down on to it. The tray teetered and the white fur otter angrily grabbed the edges. He shook his head shooing the dog with a paw. Cervix sighed carrying the load out of the kitchen. Master chef was mean. The otter couldn't have been more than 50 to 60 seasons old but had the cooking skills of some one with at least 150. The black lab balanced his tray and carried down the dark cobble stone hallway towards the entrance to the court yard. He squinted his eyes as the afternoon sun radiated down on him. It was a very beautiful spring afternoon and the trills of birdsong could be heard along with the rustle of the fruit tree leaves that swayed in the wind. Near a large fountain to the eastern wall, underneath a large apple tree, Prince Kota and Princess Hidee were chatting idly enjoying the weather. Cervix wobbled over and placed the tray down and served them both placing a plate of pie and a cup of cider down in front of them. "Master chef has offered blueberry pie and cider for this afternoon snacks," Cervix said with a bow before sitting down off to the prince's right side. "I love a good slice of pie. Um Cervix honey, you forgot the silverware," the princess pointed out looking at the empty tray. The prince chuckled shaking his head at his servant laying down and leaning on a paw. He closed his eyes and brushed his short mane as a cloud's shadow shaded the dog rising to his feet. He placed his crown to his side and rolled over on to his back listening to the sounds of Cervix fading footsteps. He sat up after he was sure the dog had left and picked the pie up. "I'm not too prissy to eat pie with out a fork and knife," he said taking a bite spilling filling down his red and black robe front. "That's why your supposed to use utensils messy lion," she sighed pulling out her handkerchief dabbing at the lion's mouth and chin.

The male smiled and nodded placing the plate down and licking his fingers."Wish he'd hurry." Cervix grumbled with his ears folded through the castle back towards the kitchen. His paws were crossed as he marched along the floor moving past the golden candle holders empty on the wall. He had seen the small leopard candle worker a few times replacing and lighting them at night. There were a lot of different furs working in the castle and he was on friendly terms with most of them. Most except for the Salin the black schipperke dog that belonged to the king. For some reason he always stared daggers at him and did little things to try and get him in trouble. One after noon Salin saw him coming around the corner carrying a large tray for the prince and tripped him. He spent a week in the infirmary with the Prince calling him a klutz for twisting his ankle doing something so simple. Cervix decided to take the back way to the kitchen hoping to avoid any knights or the king himself. Since pets weren't allowed clothing he was naked and picked on by a few of the knights. Boris, the axe wielding black panther of the group always threatened to bend him over if he ever caught him alone. He wasn't sure if the male was teasing or not considering he was mated to a beautiful panther who was with child. He made it to the kitchen and knocked on the door. "WHAT!?!" the master chef yelled poking his cute furry head from behind the door with a nasty scowl on his face. "I need to get some forks and knifes," Cervix said holding up his paws dismissively.

Cervix leaned in looking into the kitchen at the six brown otters that worked in the kitchen. The aroma of cooking chicken and assorted vegetables aroused his nose and made his mouth water. He couldn't wait to get the prince's left overs. The helpings were so massive he always got plenty to eat. He couldn't say that with his last master. The old badger had been a really nice master and was grateful that such a kind beast had been his owner. The silver and black striped mammal had treated him like a son and tried his best to care for him until he finally passed from old age. "Here," the master chef snapped handing the dog a pair of knives and forks. "Thanks, anything I can sample?" Cervix asked smiling happily perking his ears up high. "Sure. The bark on my door," the otter laughed slamming the door. Cervix rolled his eyes and walked back down towards the royal garden. "No respect," he thought to himself still smelling the tasty fumes coming from the kitchen. He traced a digit over the wall as he walked humming a tune the princess hummed while her servant brushed her coat. The small black poodle was probably changing her sheets and straitening up her room as she sat with her brother. He turned the corner and collided hard with a white rabbit. Cervix fell flat on his back dropping his silverware with a clatter. The rabbit rolled a few times before banging to a stop against the wall. Cervix jumped up quickly shaking his head free of the spots and crawled over to the motionless animal. The rabbit was female and naked covered in dirt and dust.

"Hey, you okay. Wake up," he called prodding her softly with his index digit. She jumped up to her feet quickly and slammed her paw down between Cervix furry ears. He howled and gripped his head. "The hell'd you do that for? Ow," he grumbled checking his paw for blood. She was about to run when she noticed he was naked like her. The rabbit quickly clung to him and sobbed into his chest. "Help me, please. There going to kill me," she cried as Cervix looked down at her. Cervix placed his paws on her upper arms and shook his head sadly. "I'm a pet, just the prince's servant. I don't think I can do anything," he said wishing he could do more. "Please. Once a month they chase on of us down and kills us. Don't let me be another game piece for the king," she begged pouring tears into his chest fur. Cervix took a breath and couldn't do anything but think back on the wooden stand of "Death's ladder". The last thing he wanted was to end up standing in front of the executioner for stopping the king from his monthly hunting session. He clearly remembered the rope around his neck a 8 seasons ago and didn't ever want to feel that again. "I-I can't. If I get caught helping you... they'll kill me too," he mumbled trying not to look into her pleading blue eyes. She wiped her eyes and shook her head in disgust at him. She bit her lip and turned around putting her back to him.

"If you were ever about to lose your life, I'd help you. I'm that kind of person," she whispered coldly taking off down the hallway. Cervix growled feeling the sting of her words. If it wasn't for Prince Kota his existence would have already ended. He was given a second chance at life thanks to another's kindness and now he felt the need of a returned favor knocking at his heart. "Would Prince Kota save him a second time," he thought to himself. "WAIT," Cervix yelled dashing down the hallway after her. The silverware lay forgotten on the floor as Cervix chased after her. Leaning against the wall on the other side of the wall wear they had been standing, Salin was bent eavesdropping. The small dog's snout turned up into an evil smile as he walked over and picked up the forks and knives.

Cervix closed the wardrobe and stood back. He smiled opening the chest back up pulling the prince's robes back revealing the white rabbit. She smiled letting her ear droop into he paw as she held it. "Thanks so much. I'm Ana by the way. You should at least know the name of the person your helping," she said smiling and pulling her knees closer to her chest. "Mine's Cervix. Are you going to be okay in there?" he asked slowly cracking the door. "I'll be alive, So yes," she exclaimed cheerfully. "I have to close it. I hear someone coming," Cervix whispered closing the door. The king stuck his head into the room and looked around. He spotted Cervix and motioned a paw for him to come over. The king leaned down and placed a paw under the dog's chin smiling deceptively nice.

"Have you seen a rabbit Cervix. Don't lie to your king now." the lion said eying the dog fiercely. The big cat had his tongue and he could do nothing but stand with his mouth open as the king stared down at him. Cervix tried to utter something but was saved as the Prince came in swirling his robes around him. "Cervix you Klutz. You were supposed to fetch utensils. Can I help you father?" the prince asked as the king straitened up.

"No son. I'm looking for my prey for the evening. My knights and I have been growing restless for this month's hunt. Keep an eye out," he said brushing impatiently past the prince. Kota sighed and turned his attention to Cervix crossing his paws. "Dad and his barbaric hunt. I swear when I'm king that will be the first thing to go. "You'll be the greatest king ever your majesty. Just wait and see," Cervix said beaming happily and wagging his tail. The lion smiled and placed a paw on his head ruffling the head fur. Cervix tried to fight back the urge whine when the prince touched the spot Ana had whacked on their first encounter. He yawned and started stripping down his clothes causing Cervix to scramble towards the wardrobe. The lion watched him curiously as the dog pulled out his white night robe. He handed to the king in exchange for his daily one and stepped aside as the prince crawled into bed. "I need a small nap before dinner. Wake me when Hidee comes by will ya," he yawned deeply stretching his legs and rolling on his side.

"Sure thing my prince," Cervix whispered sitting on the bed beside the king's right side. It wasn't long before the mid size lion drifted off into a peaceful slumber. Cervix carefully slid off the bed and tip pawed his paw to the wardrobe and gently tugged it open.

"Ana, Ana it's me," he whispered pulling back the robes. She smiled and raised her long ears into the air and shifted her weight from one cheek to the other. Her stomach growled and Cervix sighed. "I can't help it. All I had was a head of lettuce the guard threw into my pin," she whispered back holding her belly stomach as it groaned again. "I'll bring you something after the prince finishes his dinner. I'm really only allowed to leave his side when he asks me to go and do something for him." "Thanks Cervix. Your my hero." "So where are you from?" Cervix asked curiously. "I was born in Sandy Peak but I have no memories of it. My family was captured by a slave trader and we were sold in Highland Gulch. I lived there until the slave trader Tabari bought me for the king's hunt. I had another white male rabbit with me but he was sick and passed away. What about you." "My earliest memories were in Rock Grove. I was always a slave though. My family had been in service by a pretty tough boar and ended up selling me to my old badger master. When he died I didn't know what to do and tried to get food from one of the carts around in the merchant yard. I got busted and sentenced to death. Prince Kota saved me," he replied. "You were sentenced to death for being hungry? That's harsh." "The king is a very harsh lion. Do you have a place to go if I can get you outside of the castle?" Cervix asked looking hopefully into her blue eyes. "I could always go back to Sandy Peak. Or anywhere that I wont end up dead," she replied. "Okay good. I'll see what I can do after the prince wakes up. "Thanks again for your help Cervix. By the way, Do you think I could step out of here and stretch my legs. The black lab's eyes went wide and shut the door quickly. "I'll take that as a no then?" she muffled from the inside. Cervix padded to the prince's bed and climbed back into his spot behind his master. He had to tell the lion soon he was harboring the rabbit so she would have a chance. He was afraid that the prince wouldn't defy his father and allow the hunt to go on. He had to find away to get her out. When the prince woke up he would tell him. He yawned softly and closed his eyes curling up beside the lion. He drifted off to sleep with visions of saving Ana and running through the woods to safety. Cervix yawned sitting up and looking around. He wiped slobber from his muzzle and fixed his eyes on the spot the prince was supposed to be laying. He frantically turned to the wardrobe seeing the wooden chest doors wide open. "Oh no," he thought to himself running over to the clothes case and shoving the robes back. Ana was gone. Cervix whimpered thinking the worst possible outcomes. He dropped to his knees and pounded the floor wishing he had of said something to the prince. He looked up at the empty wardrobe and placed a paw on the spot she would have been sitting. "You okay Cervix?" Ana asked from under the bed. Cervix dropped down quickly staring into the face of the white pink nose rabbit. "I thought they got you. What the heck are you doing under the bed," he asked angrily. "Some small black dog came poking in and found me in the wardrobe. He ran off saying he was going to tell the king and bring him here." "Damn that Salin. We have to get you out of here. The king will be here any minute," Cervix said reaching down and grabbing her paw. The black lab heaved her from under the bed and helped her to her feet. She dusted herself with one paw as Cervix grabbed the other and ushered her out the prince's room into the hallway. A loud roar boomed out through the castle as the schipperke told the king where the rabbit was hiding. Cervix shivered from head to toe but kept moving towards the royal garden. There was a small wicker gate that was used by the gardeners to get back and forth from the castle that he wanted to use to escape. They panted heavily as they rounded the corner down by the kitchen. Salin was standing in the door way to the kitchen and met eyes with Cervix as the pair went by. His dark brown eyes stared into Cervix green eyes with such contempt and loathsomeness. Cervix stared back seeing the cold smile across his muzzle. It looked eerily similar to the one the king always wore when ever he was cutting down an execution victim.

"That's him Cervix. That's the dog," Ana screamed catching sight of Salin speeding up and dragging the black labrador behind her. "He's the least of our troubles right now. Don't stop," he wheezed charging forward matching her stride out of the castle and into the royal garden. Cervix heard the king's roar fill the air again growing closer as the raced through the fruit trees and low hanging weeping willows. The light of the full moon cascaded down illuminating the well manicured bushes and flower beds. Ana spotted the wicker gate and let go of Cervix paw pulling on the handle trying to free the door. "You have to pull the bar," He said reaching up and pulling the slide from the piece that held the gate shut. The sound of chain mail and armor rattled behind them in the distance. Cervix looked over his shoulder and saw the king leading the knights down the hallway through a window. They were almost at the entrance to the garden and Cervix was sure the king would break his neck. The gate opened freely once the piece was removed. Ana shoved it open and Cervix by the paw tugging him along behind her. "If we make it, tell that black poodle servant I said thanks for the food," she said looking over her shoulder seeing the king enter the courtyard. "Wait, Ida? When did you see her?" "She came in and brought the prince's clean robes in. I told her my story and she offered to bring me something to eat. I hope she doesn't get into trouble," she said as she ran full speed under the moonlight. They ran swiftly paw in paw over the clearing between the castle and the forest as the wind whipped past them. Cervix looked over his shoulder again as the pair came to a stop at the edge of the forest. The king was closing fast and would be on them shortly.

"Run, please don't let them catch you. He had over slept and missed his chance to tell the prince when he woke up. Cervix raced back through the wicker gate and up to the castle. The labrador ran to the prince's room at full speed stumbling to a stop in front of the large chamber. He heaved the door open and looked around. Prince Kota hadn't returned to his room yet. With such a large castle it would be hard to pin point where the prince could be. He raced towards the dining hall in hoped the prince was with the princess enjoying dinner. Cervix knew the king was a master hunter and would notice that there were no broken twigs or bent saplings from the distressed running rabbit. Once again the prince was no where to be found. Cervix whimpered standing in the empty dining hall. He didn't want his new friend to die because he couldn't find help. He spotted Ida cleaning up a set of plates that had princess Hidee's handkerchief on them. He grabbed the small poodle by her shoulders and looked into her eyes. "Ida please. Where's the prince," he coughed bending over trying to catch his breath. "I saw him leave a little while ago heading towards the slave building. He was in a hurry," she said stepping around the dog with her load. Cervix groaned at the prince's timing. He was going to pick out a sex toy for the night right when he needed him.

"Where's your little rabbit friend. I hope she finds a safe place to hide," she said shaking her head sounding motherly as she always did. "Thanks Ida, your the best," he said kissing her on the cheek before dashing off.

Cervix tore off through the castle speeding past the leopard candle worker. The candle he was working on flickered but kept its flame. The leopard wiped a brow and watched the dog turn the corner. The lab reached the front of the castle and stopped as the king marched happily through the front panting happily. The knights were joking with each other excitedly about tonight's hunt teasing each other letting prince Kota be the one to catch and kill the prey. Cervix heart dropped as he saw prince Kota carrying the lifeless rabbit body. He stepped against the wall as the king walked up and stopped in front of him. "Kota tells me your the one that found the rabbit. I guess letting you live pays off," the king chuckled walking by. Cervix stood rooted to the spot confused on the events that were happening. He followed the group as they marched happily conversing with one another. Cervix spotted Salin still standing in the doorway to the kitchen. His smile was still the same as he looked up at the dog. Cervix growled staring down wanting to rip his head off. "Why didn't you tell the king on me," Cervix growled deeply. The dog crossed his paws and leaned his against the doorway and said simply,"I can't torment you if your dead. Cervix clenched his teeth and continued walking down the cobblestone floor. The dog saw Kota pad up to his father and prod the lion with an elbow. "Since I caught and killed it can I drop it off at the executioners for removal," he said happily. The lion stopped and smiled down proudly at his son. He nodded and placed a paw on his shoulder. "I never thought you had it in you son. I hope you'll follow in my paw steps," he said nodding to his knights and marching off for the night. Cervix padded thoroughly disheartened at the loss of his friend. Cervix trailed the lion as he moved quietly down the hall.

"Next time you want to play savior, inform me," the lion snapped causing Cervix ears to fold as his tail tucked. "I wanted to save her sir. I just... She was like me," he said with a whimper. The lion smiled and nodded his head in agreement.

"That's why were never going to tell anyone about the little trick I pulled tonight," he whispered looking around and lowering the rabbit a little so Cervix could see. The rabbit was white but wasn't Ana. This rabbit was bigger and male. The king was so excited his son had made the kill he didn't bother to look at the body. "I keep tabs on all the slaves that come in just in case I want one. I heard this male died of sickness and figured he wouldn't mind being used to save a life," he said smiling down at the dog. Cervix smiled brightly as he understood. Ida must have told Prince Kota that the rabbit was hiding in the wardrobe from the start. He shook his head at his master's genius and followed him to the executioner. He hoped he never saw Ana again so she could live some where safe in peace. All he wanted was for her to make it home and be free. He walked behind his master like a second shadow happy the prince would be king someday soon. He couldn't wait to be the shadow of a king.
