#3 of In The Company of Shadows

A story I heard a long time ago. Read, rate, and enjoy. Feel free to ask questions.

"I remember the night that happened" the man said, leaning back on his chair as he supped his coffee. "I was young, around 14, I think. It was a crazy night. Some scary shit happened, and things like that are hard to forget."

"Would you mind sharing that story?" I ask, "Because I'm very interested in things like that."

"Sure." he replied. "I don't mind."

The old man sits reaches into his front shirt pocket for a smoke and began his tale.....

It was like any other night, I was at a friends house, you know, spending the night because that's what youngsters do with their friends. His name was Ernie, he lived in a small village across from Fort Washakie school. I can't remember the villages exact name but I remember it being called "Stabbin' Cabins", due to the amount of violence that happened there. We both were in seventh grade or something, its really been awhile.

He sighed before continuing on.

So Ernie's mom hired my older sister, Melissa, as a babysitter while she went to the bingo hall in Riverton. She was seventeen or the like. The whole evening went smoothly as me and Ernie played around outside. I remember his mom having one of those small swing sets that had a slide. Couldn't really have fun with the slide because it was for the younger children, namely Ernie's three younger brothers. I can't really remember their names. I'm sure it'll come back to me though.

The evening air was cool as me and Ernie got the bright idea to sleep outside, using a rather large rug as tent that we draped over the clothesline. I'd say it was ghetto at best but considering Ernie's family wasn't really that rich, they couldn't even afford a VCR. They always had to rent one from this old video place called "Video Junction" in Lander. Every time I visited Ernie I would ask where his VCR was and he told me that it was in hock. Me being me, just let it go at that. But every time they rented a VCR they would get some spooky movies, I liked that because my parents wouldn't rent me no spooky movies.

He smiled. "I'm getting off track here. Heh heh. Moving on."

So we draped a rug over the clothesline and told my sister we were 'camping' outside, we even had blankets and everything. She just smiled and told us it was alright. What kind of trouble could two teens get into whilst outside? So the sky turned purple and then black. Since we were 'roughing' it outside, we dug a fire pit and surrounded it with a few rocks we had gathered from the driveway. It seemed a good idea at the time, camping indian style, outside and all.

We found some charcoal lighting fluid and put it on some wood that we found, thus making our campfire. Everything was going well until sometime around midnight. I suddenly got the urge to go and went inside to use the bathroom. I guess Ernie didn't see me go in and was outside the whole time I was in.

I had just came out of the bathroom when Ernie came running into the house, slamming the door shut and locking it behind him. I asked him what was up. After he calmed down a bit he told me that I was dancing around the fire and saying something he couldn't understand, and when I stopped dancing the fire grew large and I was nowhere to be seen. I told him that was impossible because I was in the bathroom. By now Melissa had heard the door shut and entered the living room/ kitchen area and asked what the same thing I did. Ernie told her too.

Melissa rushed past me and went outside to go see for herself. It wasn't long before we heard a scream, and seen her do the same thing Ernie did. So me and Ernie ask her what she saw. She told us that the fire had died down but one of the swings was swinging and suddenly stopped. Then she told us that a shadow was sitting on top of the slide, and that it turned to her and vanished. By then the three of us were pretty scared. Then it happened. Something began knocking on the front door and suddenly started knocking on every wall around the house. It wasn't one of those nice knocks either, you know the kind, tap-tap-tap. Nope. These were thunderous knocks like something was trying to get inside.

Melissa gathered everyone in the house and put us all into one room before cedaring the whole house. You could hear the floor creaking as she went up and down the hall, cedaring every room. You could still hear the knocking as she cedared. So there we sat in someone's room, watching Robin Hood: Men in Tights, turned up enough that you couldn't hear the knocking.

It was around two or three in the morning when Ernie's mom arrived home and the knocking suddenly stopped. Ernie and Melissa told her what happened the moment she came in. She said she believed them, but not to worry because she was home and everything would be all right.

"Ernie's been gone for awhile now." the man said. "And only he, myself, and Melissa know what really happened that night. Mind you this is before all that EVP, ghost huntery stuff you see on tv these days. That stuff can be faked but what we encountered that night.....wasn't fake. It was for real."
