The Webb clan chapter 3

-chapter three is gonna be interesting.

-The entire point of this chapter is to develop a connection between Cole and the readers. I want you to get to a point where you would cry if he were hurt. THAT is my goal.

A bunch of people showed up at the last second, congratulating Turok, eating food, drinking soda and just having fun. not all of life for the assassins has to be dreary and serious. We aren't allowed to drink alcohol, just in case something were to happen, but otherwise we got to cut loose sometimes.

"So thats when i realized it. Love isn't blind, its goddamned retarded" Dante finished a story he had been telling. Even i had to laugh at that one. Thats pretty much how it works out most times. But my story of how i came to meet my wife, is different. Such a beautiful woman she was, it brings me to tears just to think about her anymore.

"Dad, are you ok?" Turok asked, breaking away from the crowd for a minute. I looked up to see a small black cloud above my head. I waved it away and it dispersed, not before dropping some rain on my untouched food.

"Yeah I'm ok. I was just thinking about your mother, thats all." I muttered, holding back tears. I just miss her so much, sometimes i wish i had been taken instead of her. None of us should have had to die, but those bastards took her from me. I slammed my fist on the table and some electricity arced from a cloud and hit the table in front of me. Then people started staring at me, so i stood up and walked out the door. When the door shut, two guys walked up behind me with knives.

"You're the one that brought the freak here, aren't you. You two are from the Webb clan, you two are the last ones. The Roja clan has been looking for you for a long time." The one on the left said, putting the knife up to my back.

"You'll wish you hadn't bothered me. Im not in the mood" i told them, and then electricity leapt into their knives and they collapsed, their bodies going in to seizures. Then i made stairs out of clouds and walked up to the roof. Then i sat down with my legs hanging over the side.

"Meryl, why did you have to die. I loved you, so why did it have to happen" i cried to myself, memories flooding my mind against my will.

-flashback

"I cant believe you spent all that money on a mask!" Austin said. Austin is the closest thing i have to a friend. Hes one of the few people that arent disturbed by it, and one of the even fewer people that arent bummed out by my personality. He kinda makes me feel happy, but not entirely.

"Hey Austin, why are you hanging out with that freak? Leave him be so he can go sleep in his cave" Jason taunted. I hate jason, hate him so much. Hes the worst kind of person theree is. He's one of those popular people that acts like an ass to all the unpopular kids. Austin was torn, he wanted to be my friend, but he also wants to be accepted.

"Its ok Austin. Go have fun, you don't have to stay with me" i told him. It didnt bother me, i was used to being alone. With a look of sadness, Austin got up and joined them, and i decided it was time to go. I climbed up the clocktower to my usual spot. When i got up there, i saw someone else sitting on the edge. Someone wearing a cloak just like mine.

"Hello?" I said, the person jumped at my voice. Then they jumped off the edge of the tower. They spun around mid jump, and i saw a masked face. Their mask was of an owl, but full faced, like mine (see cover art). Then they were gone, over the edge and on the ground, running away. I sat down in bewilderment. Who was that person?

A week later i got sent on another mission, but is was the first solo mission i had ever taken. I set out, jumping from building to building, like a cloaked madman.

"You silly, why don't you take the woods" a feminine voice came from beside me. I turned to the side, and that person from the clock tower was there. They kept pace with me, but i could see it was tough for them. I slowed down and came to a stop on the next building. Then the person stood in front of me.

"Well hello there" the person, no SHE said, holding out her hand. I awkwardly shook her hand, and stood there in silence for a minute.

"Who are you anyways?" She asked, crooking her head to the side.

"Uhhmmm.. My name is Cole" i told her, somewhat confused. No one i can think of doesn't know me. Im a legend as the freak.

"Thats not what i meant. I meant who are you, under your mask." I was kind of stunned by that question. Most people don't care about who i am, or who i wish i was. I haven't taken off this mask for anything but bathing, but she wears a mask too, so maybe she could grasp my pain. I grabbed my mask and slowly removed it, then i pulled down my hood. My medium length, pure black hair, my emerald green eyes filled with sadness, my mouth twisted in a near permanent frown.

"You're so pretty" she told me. I blushed, I've never actually been told that by anyone. Even my mother never said it to me.

"Th-thank you. Thats uhh.. Really nice.." I chuckled nervously. Then she jumped off the side of the building again.

"Wait, whats your name?" I shouted after her. She called back to me

"Meryl" and then she disappeared into an alley. Meryl, thats an interesting name. I couldn't help hoping id see her again, then i shook my head and put my mask back on and pulled my hood up, i don't have time for this, ive got a mission to do.

-flashback over

That was the first time i heard her name, and the first girl i had a crush on. Life would go on, and she turned out to be the last girl I've had a crush on, even now. Tears streamed from my face, the pain of her loss was hitting me again. Dammit, why cant o get over this. Im a Webb, an assassin, i cant just let something like this ruin me... But in the few months since her death ive come to a realization. No matter how powerful we are, or how much pride we have, we are all still human. Whenever i get like this i usually do something to distract myself, but maybe its time i get it over with.

-another flashback begins now

Another week has passed and I'm on another mission, nothing unusual. Then she showed up again. I haven't seen her since last weeks mission. Suddenly i feel happy because shes here. Darn. i shake my head. I need to stop feeling like that, i have too much to do.

"Hello Cole" she says, her face still hidden behind her mask. I greet her casually.

"Meryl, I've shown you my face. Whats under your mask?" I ask her, but i have a nagging feeling its not for work reasons. She grabbed her mask and removed it, then pulled her hood down. She had beautiful amber hair, eyes as blue as the sky, a smile on her face and a nose that twitched when she giggled. She was gorgeous. DAMMIT! Why do i keep feeling this way.

"Why is your face red?" She asked, leaning in a bit. I looked away from her.

"Im just exhausted from working, thats all" i said, a bit too quickly. She giggled at that, like she knew the whole time.

"Cole?" She asked with a serious face, i turned to her some.

"What is it Meryl?"

"Do you like me?" She floored me with that question. I blushed like a tomato and stammered

"Well, i.. I just.. You are..... Yes" i squeaked out the last part, then scolded myself for being so pathetic. This time she blushed. A beautiful shade of red, like a ruby. Then she did something didn't expect. She leaned in and kissed me right on the cheek. Then, before i could react, she blushed and jumped off the building again, this time disappearing into an underground walkway.

"She... She kissed me" i said to myself incredulously. The idea of it seemed foreign to me. I had never thought anyone would want to kiss me, the freak. But she didn't seem to care, it was the weirdest thing.

-flashback over

That was my first kiss, and while i didn't understand it at the time, i was happy because of it. She was so cute back then, and i was so weird. Why she felt attracted to me is still a mystery to me, but i couldn't be happier that it happened. My years with her were the best years of my life, and i wouldn't give them up for all the power in the world.

-next flashback now, we're having a lot of these

"so what have you been up to, i haven't seen you in two weeks" Austin asked me, we were just sitting around. I hadn't told anyone about Meryl, not even him. I would have been fine keeping it a secret, but then she showed up gain, this time around someone other than myself.

"Hi cole" she said, wearing her mask and hood again. Austin just looked at her, amazed that a girl was talking to me.

"Cole, who is this girl, and why is she wearing a mask like you?" He asked, though i suppose the question wasn't unfounded.

"Im Meryl, and I'm Cole's girl. Er. Im Cole's friend" she caught herself too late though, as Austin's face filled with understanding. He stared at me, then to her, and back, repeatedly three or four times. Then he burst out laughing like it was some kind of joke. After he calmed down, he looked at us again.

"I had no idea you had it in you Cole, but I'm still confused why she wears a mask" he said, honestly I'm curious about that too. She took her mask and hood off and Austin looked a her again.

"I wear it because... I saw Cole always wearing them like this, so i wanted to wear them too. And all i had was an owl, so i used that" she told us. Then she blushed again. She wore the outfit because she saw me wearing it. She really admired me. No admired isn't the word. She... Loved me... Austin chuckled and started elbowing me in the arm

"Oh cut it out you idiot" i muttered and punched him on the arm, but i was blushing too. Then out of nowhere she kissed me and ran off again. Sam laughed so much i thought he was gonna kill himself. I punched him in the side of the head and climbed the clock tower again.

-flashback over

That was the first time Austin had ever seen Meryl, but it wasn't the last. Austin, being the loudmouth he was, managed to tell everyone he could, and by the end of the day everyone knew it. The freak had a freaky girlfriend they all said.

-here we go again, FLASHBACK!

"Hey freak, i heard you got yourself a girlfriend. How'd you pull that off, did you kidnap her parents or did you have to make her in a lab" Jason teased. Until this point i had never once responded to any of them with violence, never once threatened them. But for some reason i felt angry, more than that, i was furious.

"Listen jason, you keep running your mouth and ill rip your lips off, so SHUT THE HELL UP!" I shouted at his face. He stepped back for a moment, surprised that for once i had threatened someone. Then he got his bearings back and leaned at me

"You wanna fight you freak, cause ill mess you up kid" he said, then he threw a punch. He moved so slow it was like he was frozen. I sidestepped and placed a punch to his face. He stumbled and came at me again but i caught his arm. Then i brought it down on my knee with a sickening crack. He fell to his knees and before he even had a chance to scream, i placed a punch right in his face, with a crunch that i think was his nose, he fell onto his back and passed out.

"Jason, you pathetic piece of trash. You aren't good enough to eat the dirt i walk on" i spit on him and climbed the clock tower again.

A half hour later one of the elders sat down next to me on the top of the tower, he looked at my masked face with a look that screamed dissapointment.

"Why did you attack Jason, Cole?" He asked me, clearly not understanding.

"I got sick and tired of his insults and his jeers" i stated, matter-o-factly. He sighed and muttered something to himself under his breath.

"After all this time of being called names, i don't believe you would snap that easily, something else is wrong with you. I want the truth from you cole" he said dissaprovingly. Before i could say anything, Meryl showed up. She walked up behind us and hugged me. The elder stared at me and the look on his face mad it seem like he had seen a ghost. He regained his composure and then he chuckled to himself.

"I should have realized this was the issue. But i had no idea you were searching for a girlfriend. It was the opinion of some of the elders that you were... More for the other side of the team" he said. I clenched my fists and a bolt of electricity leapt from a lightning rod and zapped into another. He fidgeted a bit. But of course people would think that, I keep to myself and hide behind a mask, and on top of that, the only person i ever hang out with was Austin. If i weren't me, I probably would have thought that too.

"But she is not one of us Cole, you must be aware that most will not approve of this. Your parents especially" he told me. But his face softened, he had fallen for an outsider too when he was younger, and thats common knowledge.

"Shes better than any of the others, so why does it matter." I said to the elder. At that he raised an eyebrow. Then he asked her to show him what she was capable of, so she moved and suddenly she was behind him. The elder looked surprised at her speed, but then he checked his watch and excused himself and left.

-time skip. Its now a day later

"Where are you taking me?" I asked, somewhat annoyed at being led around without being told our destination.

"You'll see when we get there, now stop asking you silly" Meryl giggled, leading me through winding passageways and back alleys. Eventually we reached a house that had trees on either side of it. She led me up and knocked on the door.

"Mom, im home" she shouted inside. Did she say mom... Im meeting her parents... oh no. She nudged my shoulder and pointed to my mask, taking the cue, i removed it and strapped it to my hip, then i pulled down my hood. Then a woman who looked a lot like Meryl opened the door.

"Meryl welcome home sweetie. Who's this?" She asked pointing at me. I was about to introduce myself when Meryl did it for me.

"This is my friend Cole" she said, beaming proudly. Her mother's face lit up when she heard my name.

"So this is the Cole I've heard so much about. Its nice to meet you" she said happily, then led me inside

-cliffhanger. While i hate them, its been proven that they build suspense, and science prevails

-Meryl's mother seems nice enough, i wonder whats gonna happen next chapter. but i already know, l just want to make you wonder -grins wickedly- but if you think you know, feel free to guess, in fact i encourage you to guess. I like to see your thoughts, and a readers idea, if i like it enough, has been known to greatly influence my stories

-I've noticed in anime shows that if a lengthy flashback happens about someones past, that person is probably about to die. But that is not the case here, so don't fret
