Devastation

This... is my masterful piece! Or at least I hope it is... this was done half at the request of a friend, half because I wanted to do something like this. I'd like to thank Mr. Blue, contacted at [email protected] and BMS, contactable at [email protected]

3 heroes, each coming from a different background, each fighting for there own reason, each claiming victories for one thing or another. Each believe they are doing right, each believe the enemy is wrong, though in the fires of war, there is no such thing as the right side... or is there?

Enter doom

It was dawn now... the attack was coming... it was certain, an absolute at this point. DoomXbio leaned against an office building a cigarette in his mouth as he puffed at it uncaringly. In this particular scenario, he was the defender. It was a large city, population of about 900 000, built in a costal region, and surrounded by two different hostile forces. He was here to keep the city apart of the faction he worked for. The soldiers were decent, trained, but inexperienced. This was the last stand for the forces of Regalia, and it was only his sense of loyalty that kept him here. Regalia was almost finished, the United Forces of Helden and the Conglomerate of Nations were embroiled in a bitter civil war, three factions fighting for one prize. Doom new this was about to become a major combat zone, with three armies fighting over a single city.

It was the sound of a VTOL that signalled the start of the battle. He looked out across the blue ocean, and saw a fleet of the aircraft, each one of them on afterburners and heading directly for the city. Doom watched as the cities defences acted, firing blindly at the craft, bringing only a handful down, when they entered the city. It was an explosion on the far side of the city indicating that the Conglomerate had begun there attack as well. With a heaved sigh, Doom stretched himself out, and collected himself, picking up his plasma rifle, and starting to head for where the VTOLs had landed...

Doom crouched low, the chatter of gunfire in the distance signalling he was getting close. He heard voices up ahead and checked around the corner... some of his country men stood there watching the street diligently... Doom stood and stepped over to them... "anything?"

Neither turned to look... "something's going on... the blockade down the streets not answering... and we've seen... something moving back in that building..." they watched quietly, and doom looked up...

"Either of you got explosives?" one of them nodded slowly, pointing at the sandbags across from them... it was an old RPG but it would do the job... he grabbed it, and he watched the windows, waiting...

when he saw the shadow flit in one of the windows, he took aim, and put a round into it... the explosion tore the wall apart, and was rewarded with a howl of pain. Within seconds, everything erupted into fire. Every window in the two story office building seemed to catch fire, as the enemy began pouring fire into the area. One of the soldiers next to Doom fell immediately, without uttering a word. The other ducked down and dove forward, and huddled close to the sandbags.

Doom ducked down low, and took his weapon back... it was an experimental gun... it focused energy into a slug before firing it at phenomenal speeds... it was strong enough to punch through tank armour like butter...

He took aim, and with a whirring sound as it charged up, began snapping shots calmly. A clank shunk sound after every shot, a second or two, and then another loud crack like thunder, and another clankshunk...

The soldier huddling covered his ears and kept huddled like that, the entire time, bullets whizzing past... then... there was nothing... and doom stood before him, and pulled him up, and with a nod... stepped off and away...

The soldier blinked in surprise and looked back at the building, and there were neat holes just below each window sill, where he had fired... he had not wasted a shot...

Doom would settle down later that night near a factory... propped against a wall alone... he watched the flak guns firing into the night lighting it up... he didn't sleep the entire night... simply waiting and watching...

Salvation, through Damnation

Doom would finally stand, hearing more firing coming from nearby... he sighed slightly, and moved off. Had he not have done that, he would have been killed in the blast that suddenly rocked the spot he had been sitting in. he blinked in surprise and looked down from the concrete office out onto the street, and there sitting in the small industrial open storage, sat a tank, starting to fire rounds into the factory. There were soldiers standing around, and watching, with several pointing at things, and moving things.

Doom figured they were making some sort of staging zone... he smiled to himself slightly... wouldn't this be fun... he opened the door as another round shuddered into the room, and he hopped off the cat walk, and down onto the ground, turning and smiling... he dropped his weapon, and began walking towards them...

The soldiers looked at him a little surprised and all of them raised the weapons towards him. "don't move... state your name, affiliation, and purpose here..." one of them called, but he simply continued to walk towards the tank...

One of the soldiers stepped forward to stop him, and it started. With blinding speed, he stepped behind him, and snapped his neck, turning full with the body in his grip, he reached down and fired the gun in the dead mans hand into 2 standing close. With a click, the clip emptied, and he moved to the right, rounds thudding into the body, as he moved with inhuman speed, using the mans body as a shield.

He got to the closest group, and with a grunt of effort, used the body and slammed it into him, before lashing out, and punching the soldier next to him hard in the throat, the windpipe collapsing as the soldier began coughing and choking dying there. Doom moved slightly, and with a vicious elbow, put it into the other soldiers back dealing with the body, and with a sickening crunch, his ribs and spine broke, the shock killing him right there.

With another burst of speed, doom got to the last two soldiers standing in front of the tank, with it's turret slowly swivelling trying to bring it to bear on doom... doom grimaced slightly, and with a hard upper cut into the soldiers gut, could here a crunch again, and knew he had hit hard enough, and just right, to affect the mans heart, the organ simply crushing.

With that last one, doom reached forward onto his chest, the man struggling to get away, and tugged in two different places, and began running. Doom now held a grenade, and as he ran, threw it as hard as he could into the barrel of the tank, as the soldier began struggling to get the other ticking grenade out of his vest.

With a massive explosion, the tank detonated... the round in the chamber exploding with the grenade, setting off the other explosives... and doom walked away from the scene, as if nothing happened, bloody, battered and dead bodies all around him... "no challenges here..."

He stopped long enough to collect his weapon, and looked up, and suddenly found himself facing a soldier clad in black, aiming at him... he aimed back... and with a clank, looked up, and aimed there as well then back at the soldier he had run into... on the catwalk stood another soldier... from a different faction... a three way stand off...

Armoured Fury

Avalanche sat in his humvee with the radio blaring, bobbing his head to the tune. He didn't know why exactly but he ended up on the Conglomerate nation's combat arm. Not that he overly minded, he just would have preferred a little more money for it though. He was a big man, very muscular, and extremely fast for his size.

He smiled happily and watched the armour roll forward, and he stood up in the cupola of the humvee, and stood there, as everything stopped, and he looked at the city in front of him... "population of about 900 000... currently running under Regalia rule... and about to be hit with tank shells in about..." the female driver looked down at her watch... he vulpine tail twitching slightly as she waited... "3...2...1..." and with a crack, every tank abroad from them fired into the city, all of the engines revving as they made a mad dash for the city, only token resistance coming from it...

The purple furred kitsune turned and looked at avalanche... "You get through this ya hear? This isn't my fight... I do feel something off around here though... so I'll be around..." she seemed to look past him a few moments before shaking her head...

Avalanche sighed slightly and nodded. "Hey when haven't I come back? I'll be fine Aiya... you taught me well..." he smiled at her and hopped out over the cupola, and down to the side of the humvee... "See when it's over!" he chuckled warmly, and reached into the back window and pulled out an assault rifle, before jogging off towards the city, which had now become a staccato of gunfire.

Aiya watched and shook her head slightly before sighing, and starting the engine again, and starting to drive around... trying to figure out what the feeling she had was...

Avalanche jogged into the city outskirts, and within moments, knew the tanks had not faired too well. There were various charred wrecks dotted here and there, in little clumps, along with bodies of both enemy soldiers, and friendly... the enemy fought smart, waiting for the tanks to get in where they couldn't manoeuvre as well...

It was a deafening explosion, and a wave of heat that started avalanches battle. He peered around the corner of a small house, and there a new tank sat burning, and some of his soldiers were pinned down around it.

He looked around and then up at the house and gave a smile... he looked over and smashed the closest glass window in, before he leapt in, and made his way to the second floor... he stepped out onto a balcony... perfect he thought to himself...

Along the rear of the houses were balconies all the way... he could get where he wanted... he ran and jumped long, catching the balcony and pulling himself, doing this the whole way though... he got to a house across from a rather imposing three story building that dominated the block, none of the soldiers paying attention to the house across from them.

With a quick moment to aim, he began snapping off three round bursts into the soldiers... there was easily a small under strength platoon in there... and when the gunfire began hitting the sides, they began to retaliate violently, pouring fire into the building. Avalanche on the other hand just kept on firing hard, taking only a moment to flip to the under slung grenade launcher and put a round into the building... it didn't take too long after that, for him to be satisfied... the building was smouldering, and the only sound coming from it were groans...

He waved to the soldiers that it was all clear, and watching with satisfaction as they began moving out... he had done good... now... it was off to the next block...

By the time he was done for the day, he had taken care of 3 buildings... but he had done well... he had minimized casualties, and now he felt exhausted... he found an abandoned house, and went upstairs and found a fitting bed, before collapsing on it sleeping deeply already...

When he awoke, fighting had moved, and he stood up and stretched... "back to work..." he found his way into the industrial sector, and there he met his first suit...

It clanked along scanning the zone it was walking through... he had almost stepped right in front of it... and it had figured he was there. It stepped back, and the mini gun began whirring threateningly, and avalanche dodged out of the way... he looked around for some sort of advantage... something... he kept running, the bullets spraying randomly into the wall trying to hit him through it...

He ran up a grated stair case, and with a sudden smash, the suit was through the wall, and he looked back. It hadn't seen him get up to the catwalk!

The suit stepped in slowly, looking around ground level, trying to find the enemy he had just seen... about the last thing was the clunk sound and some scrabbling. The suit immediately began flailing around trying to get avalanche off the top of it.

He held on for dear life as the suit moved violently, but luckily not having enough flexibility. With a grunt, he smash open an electrical panel and reached in tearing a series of wires... it seemed to do the trick. The suit suddenly stopped moving, and simply fell forward trapping the pilot... "Hey dude... I don't think you should sleep there... but then again I do think you need to calm down!"

Avalanche chuckled and got back onto the grating hoping to get another one this way. He began running along it heavily, looking to find another victim, when he heard a double click below him and he stopped pointing down at the two aiming at him, the two swinging back and forth, at him and each other as he did the same... "huh... Mexican stand off..."

Birds of fire and flame

Gene sat in the troop compartment of the VTOL and being the way he was, damned the regulation and had his comms plugged into his PDA. He bobbed his head slightly in tune with the music that rang into his helmet, and waited for the drop point. He and the rest of the team were suited up, ready to hit the beaches. It was the pangs of metal on metal that made gene become more active. It was either shrapnel, or bullets. Either way, it was time to be ready to fight.

He was at the very back of the compartment, and when the ramp came down they were still over the water and moving at top speed. "30 seconds to drop. Going in hot... we'll pour some fire into any potential ambush areas then you're on your own, till second drop." Gene watched as they began to come over the city, he watched as the ground whizzed past, buildings, offices, warehouses, and some bunkers lit with an orange light.

The craft slowed and lowered towards the ground and with a puff of dust landed with the engines still revving ready to take off again. Gene picked up his assault rifle and ran out, followed by the heavy thuds of a dozen or so more men. An office in front of them erupted with fire, ripping into the VTOL as the soldiers charged out. Gene raised his rifle and began firing at the building.

He didn't even look back and charge forward still firing. "CHARGE THEM!" he cried out over the comm., and he knew the soldiers followed. More fire came from the building and he could here a cry of pain behind him, but it was a dull thud that satisfied him. he watched as the building was torn apart from the fire of the soldiers, gene got to the door and smashed it open, kicking it clean off of its hinges. He found himself confronted by two of the enemy soldiers, both seemingly surprised by gene's appearance. He quickly pointed his rifle and tapped his trigger twice. Both of them fell without even a word and gene continued his way in, pressing himself against a wall, next to a doorway. He heard shouts from inside and needed no more indication. He pulled a grenade from his vest, the pin popping off, and he tossed it into the room. None of the soldiers noticed the small but deadly device until it detonated. Gene looked in and swept the room, finding no more targets he could possibly engage. He turned and continued down the hall and readied to do another room clearance, when he heard a slam from inside, a yelp, and a long chatter of gunfire. He popped his head around the corner quickly and nodded and moved down the hallway again, now 3 soldiers following him.

Up a small set of stairs, the group arrived in an area used to house some sort of goods, the boxes about waist height. Stepping into the room quickly, he spotted an enemy and fired at him, the soldier going down, before gene ducked behind one of the boxes, a hail of enemy gunfire slashing at the area he had just stood in. on of the group following him was crumbled to the ground clutching his neck a moment before he stopped forever silenced. The fire fight raged back and forth after that gene's group slightly out numbered, but they had superior weapons and training. Slowly the combatants neared each other, soon they within speaking distance and it was easy to see what would come next. For gene it came with a thudding boot on the top of the box he was hiding he looked up and fired his weapon directly upwards, shredding the enemy jumping over to engage him in close combat. he stood to fire again, picking another enemy off before one of the enemies took a running leap at him. he smashed the butt of his weapon into the face of him as he was still in midair, letting the unconscious man slide to the side as he fired on another. he soon had another man swinging at him hard with a rifle, gene deflected it with his own, swinging back. The combat raged furiously between the two, both of them swinging there weapons like clubs, punching, kicking, smashing into each other. Gene swung his rifle low, smashing his weapon into the man's leg. He heard the bone snap, and he followed with and uppercut, catching the man under the chin knocking him out cold. He turned the room now cleared but at a cost. Another one of the soldiers had fallen, shot twice in the stomach.

Gene grimaced a little and stepped out through the area he had just cleared, getting back to the drop zone just in time to see the second wave landing, each VTOL carrying a CZ700. These were armoured suits, fitting a single man and were used for a number of different roles, ranging from combat to heavy lifting. Two of the VTOLs made there way to where gene was each packing suits and dropping the next group of soldiers. He watched as the piled out and the two suits thundered off around the block. For now genes fight was over. All he had to do was hold the landing zone until they had a more stable base of operations. He sat against a wall and sighed heavily, looking up and listening to the distant thunder of tanks, the rattle of gunfire and the thump of explosions. One of the soldiers that had followed him in swooped down nimble and sat beside him. Taking off her mask, a renamon sat beside him now. He looked over at her and gave a weak smile. "Thanks for backing me up..."

Mist smiled warmly at him and nodded before setting her own head against the wall. "It's my duty... no need to thank me..." gene looked at her and gave a little nod before he slowly began to nod off to sleep. The renamon slowly nodded off as well, and at some point the two of them snuggled into each other for warmth as they caught what sleep they could...

Iron monster

It was a few hours later when gene woke. Slowly they slid apart and gene stood looking around. Things were running smoothly. A base of operations had been set up and it was about time he got some orders. It took some digging but he ended up getting handed an assignment to take an industrial/office building. Apparently, Regalia held onto it quite viciously and the conglomerate was pushing for it. It sounded like the fighting was getting nasty and they needed some help.

He smiled as he spotted the line of battle suits, available for use. He picked out two soldiers hanging out around the mess to join him. He left mist to sleep... she would wake soon enough... he'd left a message to let her know where he was. He stepped into the suit, inserting himself into the cock pit, as it sealed shut over him. slowly he stood, moving like he normally would, but now with a large exoskeleton over him. he quickly acquainted himself with the suit. The suit had two arms one was normal, so to speak, with a large hand to manipulate objects. With the combat configuration, the other arm had its manipulating hand removed and was replaced with a chain gun.

He began to move towards where the battle was taking place, the two soldiers in there own suits following him closely. It took them about 15 minutes before the reached the outskirts of the complex. Gene thudded out onto a road leading to the main building and was met with a hail of gunfire. Normally he would ignore this and go right ahead, but he knew better. He sidestepped just in time for a rocket to fly past him. He stepped into and alley and found himself look at two enemy soldiers who began firing at him. He grimaced a little and cut them down easily with his chain gun. He continued his way down the alleyway keeping his weapon revved. He stepped out into another road and found himself to the side of a tank. The commander looked to his left and a look of panic flashed across his face as he slammed on the top of the turret screaming orders. Gene stepped forward quickly and took a great swing into the side of the tank, the arm ripping into the tank like paper. Her twisted a little and gutted the tank easily, before he pulled his hand out, and gave the inside of it a spray of his chain gun. He looked up and nodded to himself slightly spotting a side warehouse to the complex. He stepped over to it, and found minimal resistance. He smashed through the wall easily and cleared the room quite effectively, with short bursts of his chain gun. He stepped to where the main building door was and grimaced. He had to leave the suit... the hatch opened slowly and he stepped out silently looking around, before pulling his rifle out. He stepped to the door and looked around the corner carefully, and spotting nothing he stepped inside, scanning the hallway quietly before continuing on. He came to a large room full of electronics and scanned each on suspiciously waiting for the enemy yet none came. He passed through the room uneventfully and stepped into another hallway. He followed it until he got to large room with a few catwalks, and some other stuff. He stepped into it and continued quietly. He was about halfway through it when he heard a metallic click and he spun suddenly. He pointed his gun directly at a man who also held his gun pointed at gene, and quite suddenly another click made the both of them spin and look at a third man on a catwalk.

Gene looked at the both of them, swinging his weapon back and forth breathing heavily as he tensed himself for action. A three way standoff, with two different enemies... definitely not a good situation under any circumstance...

Three heroes, three enemies, one chance

Gene breathed heavily, doom watched warily from his perch and avalanche swung back and forth. It was about the last thing from any of them expected was a sudden flash. All three immediately moved to depress there triggers but found they could not. They were totally frozen for some reason.

All three blinded all three almost in a panic now as they struggled to do something. It was a booming voice that stopped all of there separate struggles. "Ah... I could not have asked for a better chance for the three of you in one spot..."

Avalanche blinked a little and sighed. "Wonderful... a pompous all knowing being..." Doom looked around trying to see past the light and gene chuckled a little to himself. "Things are only getting better eh?"

The low rumbling voice only chuckled to itself continued on. "Not all knowing, though, maybe a little pompous. Now... never mind that... down to business... there is an evil growing... with every death it is fed... which is why this world is embroiled in war... someone initiated the events leading up to it... and someone needs to stop the process before it has gone too far..."

Gene spoke up first. "So you're sliding the work off to us? Lazy bastard huh?" Avalanche chuckled a little and smiled.

"Oh no worries. He'll come up with some lame ass excuse as to why he's not going to help." Doom chuckled along with them and smiled.

"We'll just have to kick his ass when we get the chance huh?" the voice only rumbled with laughter and took a deep breath.

"While it seems like an excuse... I am too weak... after I give you this mission... I shall cease to exist... so as much as I would like to help... I will be dead I am afraid... now... with my doom approaching you must be silent so I can tell you what you need to know. Run from this place... before all is destroyed with you in it... then your enemy will show himself... and then you must come up with your own plan... but know that all three of you must work together in the end to destroy the evil... else all is lost. Now... I end my existence with a hope that you will claim victory... and redeem yourselves and many more with your actions..."

The three of them suddenly blinked away the light, and they found themselves looked at each other again. Each had a half hearted thought run through there mind to keep fighting but each stopped. Doom hopped down from the catwalk and approached the middle between them. All three of them now stood close enough to talk to each other easily. "Gene... guess I'll be working with you two..." gene said taking his mask off and looking at the two of them with a weak smile, his right eye was completely white, a scar running through it. His white eye normally unnerving despite his attempts to calm all those around him but he had learned to cope with it.

Avalanche smiled and nodded to him as well and then looked at doom. "So I guess we got caught up in some lame-ass save the world routine huh?" he sighed a little and rubbed his eyes before stretching out and flexing his muscular arms. "Well your gonna need some muscle!"

Doom grimaced a little and took out a cigarette and lit it, placing it in his mouth and starting to puff away at it. "Yep... I just don't like the fact we're going into this pretty blindly..." gene chuckled a little and looked at him.

"Should be used to it by now with shitty military intelligence." The three of them chuckled a few moments before each heaved a sigh... and looked around. Doom looked at the other two and shrugged a little.

"So... how we getting out?" Gene shrugged a little and looked at Avalanche, who rolled his eyes and started to walk away. "Fine, fine... I came in a humvee... I'll drive you guys out of the city limits... then we gotta figure out what the hell we're doing..."

the two nodded and followed avalanche, each still a little mistrusting of each other but first thing was first... avalanche hopped into the hummer and turned it on quickly, revving it for effect. Gene hopped up onto the machine gun mounted on the roof and smiled. "Yeah... there we go... something fun..." doom hopped into the passenger seat and nodded.

Avalanche floored it the moment all of them were settled, gene heaved a little and he turned a little pale. "Aw shit... screw this... I'm sitting..." he slid down through the hatch and into a back seat still looking quite pale and started strapping himself in. Avalanche chuckled a little and looked back at him with a vicious grin.

"What's the matter gene? Don't like driving?" gene turned a little paler and pointed at the windshield and shook his head violently.

"You dumb ass! Watch the fucking road! Christ! I just don't like it when people decide to drive extreme like this!" he said still quite pale as building went flying past. Doom only chuckled but didn't say much more. The three were out of the city in 15 minutes, Avalanche completely ignoring anything that happened to try and stop them. They ended up on a highway road where they stopped a few miles away from the city and all of them got out. Gene stumbled out a little shaky but other than that he was fine.

"so... what now?" doom looked over at avalanche and shrugged.

"figure out where we are?" gene looked at the two and nodded happily.

"you two do that... I'm gonna rest a moment..." he flopped down with his back against a tire and sighed watched the skyline of the city. He wondered what mist was doing... and brought up a communications pad. He typed in his password and found she had been ordered to fall back and let another unit occupy the area she was in. he sighed a little in relief and looked up back at the sky line and his jaw dropped. "Holy... marry... mother... of... god..."

Avalanche hummed and turned to look at Gene who still had his mouth open looking at the sky line. He turned to see what gene was looking at and blinked... "Well... I'd say that may as well be what we're fighting..."

A massive ship of some sort and appeared suddenly, in the time each one of them had looked away, and it was now dropping thousands of pods of some sort. Doom watched in astonishment alongside Gene and Avalanche. Gene was the first to react and flipped on his communication channel and set it high enough for all of them to hear. They didn't need to listen long... something was subjugating the city... capturing everyone they could, and killing anything that resisted... a clear order suddenly rang out across the com. "Earth is now ours... cooperate... or perish..."

The three watched in amazement and knew things... were REALLY bad...

Earth's hope

It had been three days since the occupation of earth... it was swift, brutal and total. The three of them had been unable to do much about it and had fallen back into an expansive forest along with many other refugees'.

Avalanche sat by a camp fire and watched the flames lick at a log and grimaced. The three of them had no idea what to do a steady tickle of refugees were the only news they had. Things were grim. Whoever these people were, they were fast and extremely efficient. Every major government body of every county in the world had been destroyed.

The only good news was that portions of elite military organizations reacted on the own and did one of three things. The first was to go down fighting, bringing as many of them with them. The second was banning together with other military organizations, whether elite or not, and creating extremely formidable defences, or as the case of the many that were arriving in the forest now, went to ground to fight using guerrilla tactics.

Gene stepped over and sat down with a sigh rubbing his eyes tiredly. "Alright... here's the deal... I've figured out the location of the equivalent of a POW camp... they're rounding everybody they find from the area there... unfortunately it's also functioning as a base of operations."

Avalanche nodded and sighed. "well... we've got to do something... may as well double up and attack there headquarters... and liberate the POWs at the same time..."

Doom approached and sat down prodding the fire with a stick. "Have we got the soldiers to do it? And what sort of defending forces are we talking about here..."

Gene gave a little shrug. "I think we've got enough to do it... most of them are elites as well which is a big advantage... in terms of defenders... from the info I've gotten, there's always at least a double garrison... so we're talking two battalions at least... probably more though..."

Doom nodded slowly and sighed... we'll work out logistics and plan of attack later... for now... I know a new group of refugees is coming in... we need to help them... after that... we'll get to work... on our little revolution..."
