Chapter Two: Polly

In a luxury bathroom in a luxury apartment on the East Side of Squid Harbor, a five centuries-old Reptilian sonata gently floated through the air as a hot steam made a swamp of the artisan-designed interiors. As if to mimic the flowing sweetness of the piece, Polly Poplawski ever so slowly swam in a circle, humming along. As the heir to an aristocratic Snake family in her home country, Polly was used to the easy life. Breaking the 'rich girl' stereotype, however, she did not look down upon the multicultural metropolis of Squid Harbor. Indeed, although she still clung to her upper class lifestyle, she felt something was missing. She dipped her blondish-brown hair into the water.

The door opened.

"Wh-Who's there?" Polly said, baring her fangs. Although highly civilized, her defensive Snake aggressiveness was still intact.

No one answered.

"Claude...?" She whimpered. Nothing.

Finally on cue, Claudette Collins leaped to the ceiling, stripped off her clothes, and made a cannonball into the formerly-placid tub. Hot water flooded the floor as the sonata played on. A clearly shocked Polly screamed and gave a loud hiss.

"Claude, you know music in the bathroom is code for privacy! No roomies allowed! That means you!"

"Polly."

"You know we can't be naked together! What if my father saw us like this!?"

"Polly."

"Besides, you're a girl, I'm a girl. You're a Frog, I'm a Snake. It would never work out!"

"Polly!" Claude finally yelled, silencing the flustered serpent. "Come with me."

"Pardon?...Did you find work?" questioned Polly, wrapping up in a robe and fixing her hair.

"Yeah, you heard me. You wont even believe these guys I talked to at the Fair today. They were so cool. Actually, it was this old Bat dude and his Vulture girlfriend. She was so beautiful, Pol. But anyway, you wont even believe these guys."

"You already said that."

"But listen, they're like this adventure group. They go around and solve problems or something, but it all sounds so grand and exciting! I've already got a uniform, you know, just in case they're actually superheroes."

"So...it's like a nonprofit for the poor?" Polly asked.

"Details to follow," Said Claude, giving her impression of the Bat she had met earlier that day.

Claude streaked out of the bathroom and into her mess of a room. She looked out over the clothes laid out on her bed and gave a mischievous grin as she put her glasses on.

"Yes, Claude, please do put some clothes on," Polly said with a chuckle, finally calmed down from the tub mishap.

Claude blushed and censored herself, as if just realizing her own nudity. Polly smirked and looked to the side.

The costume wasn't exactly what Polly had in mind when Claude said "superhero." Triumphantly, Claude slipped it on and gave a heroic pose that bordered on ridiculous. The first thing Polly noticed was the sea blue sneakers which stood in stark contrast to the rest of the outfit. The top was a white anorak jacket with red and blue stripes running down the zipper. Matching almost perfectly, but still clearly purchased separately, was what looked like a pair of white pajama pants with green and yellow stripes at the bottom of the legs.

"You look like a homeless race car driver," said a slightly confused Polly.

"I look like a stone cold winner, baby."

The statement made Polly give a slight giggle. She slithered over to the bed and stared up at the ceiling. Claude continued her flexing.

"So, you really think this would be fun?" Polly asked with a subtle smile.

"Yes, and I think a lot more. We should really do this, Pol."

"When is it?"

"Tomorrow. 6:00 A.M. Be prepared."

Claude looked into the mirror and gave Polly a confident grin and thumbs up.
