Abandoned Theatre

Thursday 8:42pm

Terry took point as he and half of his squad climbed up the stairs to the second floor. There was a fire burning inside him. An anger, a rage he hadn't felt in years. It was all being directed at what had been shaking the theatre so badly only moments ago. He hadn't dealt with a big one in a long time. From Aaron's story of the mother carrier he eliminated downtown, they were already in a heap of trouble. The last time they had to deal with carriers of unusual size was in Germany. Back then they hadn't heard of a carrier actually mutating. It was during the infiltration of the terrorist base that they faced mutated forms of carriers that could fly or burrow deep underground. It seemed likely that it was happening all over again. It drove Terry like nothing he'd ever felt before. He wouldn't rest until every carrier on the face of the earth had been exterminated.

Coming to the top of the stairs he turned left, keeping his gun up and shifting it left to right with his flashlight shining on the walls. The rest of his squad followed close with Bravo two taking the rear and covering their backs.

"Awful damn quiet up here." he said.

"That's how they operate." Terry started. "These things are intelligent. They know we're here. When an enemy approaches the entire family will go silent. They're sneaky like that."

The team stopped at the door at the end of the hall. Their guns raised Terry looked to all of them. His face stern but clam. Holding up a paw and two fingers and he nodded he waved the three of them by. Bravo one kicked in the door and kept against the wall as his teammates stepped into the empty theatre room, the sound of wood and drywall crunching beneath their feet. Chairs had been strewn along the walls and the projector screen was torn apart. Terry looked to the opposite side of the room. The wall had been completely torn down with chunks of wood and brick strewn across the floor, and now all there was, was a huge gap. There was something wrong with this picture. He could feel it. The fur on the back of his neck was standing on end. He looked to the other Bravos who by this time were equally confused. The target was missing. Terry's ears started to twitch. Something wasn't right. Then it hit him.

"Above us!" he yelled.

All four Bravos raised their guns straight up and opened fire. Several carriers dropped from the ceiling, some of them still alive. Bravo one roundhouse kicked one in the side of the head knocking it away and then fired on it. A few more dropped in front of the team snarling and gnashing their teeth. Bravos two and four crouched down and fired at the closest of them with three more behind it.

"Jesus Christ! They're like fucking cockroaches!" Bravo four yelled.

Another carrier that had come from the ceiling leaped at Terry. He saw it just in time to turn and fire at it in midair.

"Don't let up yet!" he cried. "We almost have them!"

Six more came charging from the hole in the wall. The four Bravos took aim and fired. The hail of bullets plowing into the pack, tearing through flesh and bone and forcing the creatures to shriek profusely. As the last of them fell Terry put up his paw.

"Cease fire!" he ordered.

The Bravos lowered their guns. Terry looked around the room. Something was amiss. They had shot down at least twenty carriers or more and there was no sign of what they had heard moments ago from one floor below them. His ears twitched every so often. This wasn't right.

"Everybody stay together."

Terry kept his focus on the hole in the wall where some of the carriers had emerged from. The silence in the room was so bad it was starting to play with his mind. Terry hated when things got this quiet. He was just about to radio in when he heard it. The same sound that resembled both a shriek and a roar. The floor started shaking. Something was coming from the adjacent room. A claw reached out and slammed down on he floor. Another claw reached out and landed beside it crushing a dead carrier with its talons. Slowly a head and body started to emerge the creature now before them snarling and drooling through clenched sharp teeth. Its rounded head and body coated in a strange shell like skin that glimmered when the Bravos shined their lights on it. It had six red eyes that seemed to give off an evil glow. The beast let out another shrieking roar, slowly approaching the Bravos.

"What do we do sir?" Bravo two cried.

Terry looked to his three men. First to Bravo two, then to one and four.

"Do any of you have grenades?" he asked.

Bravo one spoke up.

"I have two sir."

"Good, give them to me."

Bravo one reached into a pouch on his left side and took out two live hand grenades. He then handed them to Terry.

"Alright all of you stay back. If this doesn't work get the hell out of here!"

"Wait, what are you going to do sir?"

"There's only one sure way to take out one of these guys, and that's with a bang."

Terry clenched his teeth looking in the direction of the large carrier. His muscles tensed. His breathing got heavier and heavier. Closing his eyes he squeezed the handle of his gun. Sweat started running down his nose.

"What's going on?" asked Bravo two. "What's he doing?"

"He's going red eye!" Bravo one exclaimed. "Keep back!"

The large beast let out another terrible roar as it started walking toward the team.

"You think you're scary you lumbering pile of shit!" Terry spat. "Wait till you get a load of me."

At that moment his eyes shot open. No longer the gentle shade of yellow they once were, they had changed to a blood red. In one motion he tensed up all of his muscles and charged head on toward the carrier. He was nothing more than a blur to the eyes of the other Bravos. They were barely able to keep up with him as he dashed to the right then the left and jumped in the air positioning himself just out of harms reach and opened fire. Bullets started bouncing off of the carrier's rock solid hide which didn't even cause the creature to flinch.

"Damn!" he thought. "If only Cain were here. He could shoot this things eyes out in three rounds. Only one thing to do now."

Landing some feet away from the less than annoyed carrier, he dashed under its head and to the other side. Staying in close proximity he jumped up and fired when he was at eye level with it. Most of the bullets bounced off of its head but, the few that did hit their mark, struck the carrier's eyes. The beast shrieked, spurting blood from the two eyes now blinded by hot lead. When he landed he dashed back to the other side of the creature. As he was passing under it he turned around and fired up at its head blinding it in another eye. Now it was mad. It started lumbering in his direction. Terry kept running until he was on the opposite side of the room. He threw down his gun and took a grenade in each hand. The carrier lowered its head and opened its mouth revealing four rows of razor sharp teeth. When it was just a few feet away it lunged at Terry. Terry on the other hand jumped up into the air just as it was coming for him. He landed on the back of the beasts neck and held up the grenades. He brought them up to his mouth, bit down on both pins and pulled them out. He then spit out the pins and slammed the grenades into two of the carriers opposing, blinded, eyes.

"Nice knowing you ugly."

Terry jumped down and dove toward the rest of the Bravos.

"Hit the deck!" he yelled.

The other Bravos dropped to the floor. Terry covered his head just before the grenades went off. The entire room shook from the blast, knocking down chunks of wood and tile from the ceiling. When things calmed down Terry lifted his head and looked back to the carrier. All that remained now was the carcass of the creature. Most of the head had been obliterated from the explosion leaving only the lower jaw and part of the brainstem. Blood was slowly oozing out of the neck and the skin around the chest and back was cracked and crumbling. The rest of the Bravos hurried over to him.

"Sir, are you alright?" asked Bravo one. "Can you stand?"

Terry held up a paw. As he slowly picked himself up the color of his eyes changed back from red to yellow. He looked back to each of them before looking back to the dead carrier.

"I'm fine men. Can't say the same for him though."

They all started laughing.

"Sir that was incredible." said Bravo two. "How did you do that?"

Terry smiled.

"It's from a super soldier program a few years ago. I wouldn't recommend it. You have to be at least ten years old to be eligible, and the project has been discontinued since about two years ago. So really you couldn't get in anyway."

Terry readjusted his headset and microphone.

"Alright boys let's move out."

"Yes sir." said the Bravos.

Terry followed close behind the team as the headed back out to the hall.

"This is Bravo leader. Bravo three, what is your status?"

No response.

"I say again, what is your status."

Bravo three's voice came over the radio.

"Good to hear from you Bravo leader. We just finished up here when we heard an explosion. What happened?"

"We had to use a couple of bug bombs. Everybody's okay here."

"This is Spotter 243." came a voice. "Job well done."

"Yeah thanks. We're all done here. Call for clean up."

"Yes sir."

Terry took off the headset. As he followed the rest of his team he shook his head with a grin.

"Too bad Aaron had to miss out on this one." he thought.

Kusanagi Residence

Thursday 9:36pm

Aaron pulled his car into Mia's driveway and put it in park. The two of them had laughed all the way home since leaving the restaurant. After the band had played their last song of the evening there was a live show including acrobats and a standup comedian. They had been discussing the jokes and wound up in hysterics. They managed to calm themselves after Aaron cut the engine.

"Hoo man, what a blast that was." he said. "I had no idea there were more shows than that."

"I especially like the story about the fishing trip. The guy sat in the tackle box, fell in the water..."

"And caught six fish with his pants!" they both finished laughing.

The two calmed down again and looked to each other. Mia blushed.

"I had a great time with you Aaron."

He smiled.

"Yeah?"

She nodded.

"You know," he started. "The night is still young. You wanna do something or call it good?"

"Would you want to watch a movie?"

He shrugged.

"Sounds good to me."

He opened his door and climbed out. When he closed it he came around to the other side and opened the door for Mia. She stepped out and he closed the door. The two of them walked up to the porch and Mia took out the keys from her purse. She unlocked the door and stepped inside. Aaron followed. The inside of the house was decorated with Japanese banners and pieces of art. There was a scroll hanging over a couch and a pair of large lamps were set on either side of it. Aaron was impressed.

"Love the décor." he said closing the door.

Mia smiled.

"You'll really love the den." she said taking off her shoes. "Wait right there. I want to go change."

Aaron saluted.

"Will do."

She walked up the stairs and disappeared around a corner. Aaron continued admiring the living room. The fireplace was given a rustic Asian design and on top of the hearth was a large urn. There was a miniature bar next to the fireplace and a near the front window was a small dragon statue. One of the fangs was chipped but other than that it was in very good condition. Taking in the surroundings he walked over to the couch and sat down. For the next few minutes he twiddled his thumbs just wondering what Mia had in mind. He liked her. Of that he was certain. She was attractive. Nice slender figure, red fur with patches of black and white, the most beautiful green eyes, long red and white striped tail, she was hard to get out of your mind once she got there. He suddenly heard footsteps from the stairs. Mia was coming down dressed in a small, white, shirt and gray sweatpants that hugged her hips and legs. Aaron gave her a look up and down as she walked over to the couch. She leaned over the arm and looked into his eyes. A smile reached his lips.

"Very cute. Did you make those too?"

She giggled.

"No. This is J.C. Penny."

"I see. So how about that movie?"

Mia started for a nearby hallway.

"Follow me."

She led him down the hallway to a large room where a big screen TV sat. To the right was a shelf full of DVDs and a few feet in front was a large couch. The walls of room were decorated with wood planks to give it a cabin look. Mia took out a movie from the shelf and put the disc in the player. She sat down and patted the spot next to her. Aaron took this as an invite and sat down beside her with a smile as she pressed play on the remote.

"So, what's on for tonight?" he asked.

"Casablanca," said Mia. "I hope you don't mind."

"Not at all. I've seen it a couple times. Only trouble is I got drowsy and fell asleep both times. I never could sit through the whole thing."

"You get bored with it?"

He shook his head.

"No, I wouldn't say that's it. Come to think of it I really don't know why that happens. It's only with this particular title."

"Maybe you're allergic to the movie?"

"Ha. If I'm allergic to Casablanca shouldn't I be experiencing congestion and violent sneezing?"

She giggled.

"That does sound rather silly doesn't it? I'm mean, if you're allergic to specific movies you might as well be allergic to kissing."

Mia couldn't believe she had just said that. She started blushing. Lucky for her Aaron couldn't tell.

"Not a chance. I know for a fact that I'm not allergic to kissing." Aaron continued.

Realizing he was still talking about it she decided to play along.

"Oh really? How do you know that?"

He gave her a sly look and rested an arm on the back of the couch.

"Because if I was allergic to kissing something horrible would happen. I'd probably swell up like a balloon. In which case it wouldn't be pretty."

She scooted closer to him.

"I'd be willing to take that risk."

"Taking my health into your own hands. Isn't that just a little dangerous?"

"Every girl in the world has at least a drop of poison in their blood, or at least that's what Tracy tells me."

He gave a short laugh.

"I wouldn't argue there. I've met my share of poisonous women. Although I've been called downright deadly myself."

"You're only eighteen."

"A guy can get around pretty fast at that age."

"So you have experience?"

"Oh you have no idea."

She propped herself up on her knees and got as close to him as she could.

"Alright then lover boy, show me what you've got."

He looked at her and raised an eyebrow.

"What's that?"

"Kiss me. Let's see how good you really are."

"You're being awfully bold. Are you sure that's what you want?"

"I just want to see if you're just full of hot air."

At this, Aaron grinned.

"Challenge accepted."

He turned himself toward Mia and looked into her eyes. They were shimmering from the light of the television. She really was beautiful. Ever so slowly they closed the space between them and their lips met. To Mia it was unlike anything she had ever felt in her life. He was soft and gentle. His hands made their way to her arms gently squeezing them as the two of them pressed on further. Mia's breathing was starting to get heavier while Aaron remained absolutely neutral. He could sense her excitement. This being their first kiss and all there was something magical about it. The atmosphere around them seemed to disappear leaving them in a sea of endless bliss. Mia could almost feel herself floating when she felt Aaron's tongue probing her mouth. She opened her mouth to let him in and their tongues wrestled as she brought her paws up to his face. She didn't want it to stop. Her heart was racing. This was what she had been looking for. Someone to love, to share her love with. Then she felt him moving away. Before she knew it they had parted. She was out of breath. Aaron on the other hand was barely panting.

"How was that?" Aaron asked.

"Incredible." she managed.

He sat back a little taking her paws in his hands. He looked at her with a smile.

"Now you know I'm not just full of hot air."

The two of them started to laugh. They looked over to the TV still playing the movie. It had been half an hour since they had started it and neither of them had been even taken the time to care. They turned their attention back to each other. Mia picked up the remote and grinned. Aaron grinned as well. This time she pushed him back, so he was now laying on the couch, crawled up to him, and put her arms around his neck.

"You know," he said. "I'm starting to have a new appreciation for this movie."

With that she pointed the remote at the TV and turned it off. She then tossed it aside and kissed Aaron lightly as he put his arms around her waist.

LAX Airport

Friday 4:52am

He stepped into the main lobby just as people were starting to walk in for their daily shifts. The terminal wouldn't be busy this early in the morning so it was unnaturally quiet. He could hear a distant humming sound coming from across the way. Probably just one of the custodians waxing the floor. His flight had been the most rest he'd had in months. He'd slept through the whole thing and was now in LAX getting ready for his next assignment. He figured it would be a while before had to meet with the others. Something wasn't sitting well with him though. He could feel two pairs of eyes watching him. Maybe he was just nervous. That was one of the natural instincts of a wolf. Always alert and aware of the surroundings. This wolf stood at five foot eleven and had gray fur. He wore a black leather duster with a red shirt, black pants, and black boots. He was carrying an irregularly long duffle bag with him.

He needed something to calm his nerves. A reliever. He just didn't want to think about people coming after him again. Not after he had just dealt with something like that over seas. He needed a smoke, then he wouldn't feel so restless. He didn't want to go outside so there was only one other possible place to take care of a nicotine itch. The men's room. No one would bother him there that early in the morning. Just one and then he'd be fine. He started off to the nearest restroom he could find which turned out to be upstairs just a short walk from where he was standing. It was halfway up the stairs that something caught his eye. One of the security camera mirrors gave a reflection of someone behind him. Now he knew he wasn't just being paranoid.

"Best not to agitate them." thought the wolf. "I'll just keep going like I don't suspect a thing and get to the restroom. Then we'll have some fun."

He just kept walking at his steady pace. One of his ears flickered every so often at the sound of a footstep or two from behind him. They were a good distance away. It wouldn't normally rouse suspicion, but in this case it was all too clear that they were following him. It was especially evident when he stopped and put down his bag. He opened it and took out a pack of cigarettes and a lighter. Closing his bag he stood up and dropped his lighter. On purpose mind you. This enabled him to turn around without giving away that he knew what was going on. As he reached for the lighter he took a quick glimpse ahead of him and spotted two figures in black suits. Picking up the lighter he turned around and continued on to the restroom. Once there he pushed the door open and went in. He walked all the way to the back and entered the handicapped stall. Setting down his bag he took out a cigarette and lit it. He took one long drag and exhaled. They would be following him any minute now. Kneeling down he reached into his bag and took out a katana. This was the blade he used on anyone who was stupid enough to come after him. He never played favorites. He just did what came natural to a killer of his standards. The ones following him were amateurs, of that he was certain. He didn't need much time to figure that out. When he heard the door creek he took one more drag from the cigarette, flicked it into the toilet and flushed. The two amateurs were walking slowly to him. They probably had guns. Pretty standard for pathetic hitmen. He quietly removed the katana from its sheath and stepped closer to the door of the stall. One of the men was right in front of the door naturally ready to kick it down. He wouldn't let them. Pulling his arm back he thrust the katana through the door and into the man behind it. The man dropped his gun and slumped to the floor when the wolf pulled the sword away. He then kicked the door open and dashed around to where the second hitman was. The second hitman was a panther. He raised his gun but, didn't have time to fire. The wolf swung his sword and cut through the panthers arm taking off the paw that held the gun. The panther roared from horrible pain. A small pool of blood was forming on the floor as the panther dropped to his knees. The wolf held the tip of the blade under the panther's chin.

"What do we have here?" he taunted. "Just one more bug to squash. Who sent you?"

The panther kept his eyes on his arm.

"Screw you."

"Wrong answer."

He rested the blade on the panther's right shoulder and drug it harshly away cutting through cloth, fur, and flesh. The panther let out another roar.

"I'll ask again. Who sent you?"

The panther was bleeding from two different places now and breathing heavily. The pain was starting to become too much for him.

"I... I don't know. They wanted to remain anonymous."

The wolf was starting to show his fangs.

"Why did they send you after me?"

"They just said they wanted you and three others out of the way. They faxed us some pictures and told us where to find two of you and when to expect the others. We figured since the first two weren't going anywhere soon we'd just wait for the other two of you to show up and take you out one by one."

The wolf gritted his teeth.

"And you must have thought I was going to be easy pickings right? They forgot to mention that all four of us are professional killers."

"Yeah, they left out that part...probably on purpose...otherwise we wouldn't have taken the job."

"Too bad it got you a one way ride to Hell. Say hello to your friend for me when you get there."

"Just one question. Who are you?"

The wolf sneered at him.

"My name is for my friends."

With those last words the wolf thrust his sword through the panther's chest. Blood poured from his mouth and he went limp. The wolf pulled his sword free and then held it up to the sink to wash off the blood. After doing so he walked back to the handicapped stall and picked up his bag. He slid the sword back in its sheath and put it in the bag. He then stepped back out and carefully stepped over the bodies and blood. Proceeding out he took one look back at the mess he had made. This was going to make an interesting headline in the paper tomorrow if it wasn't taken care of. When he was outside of the restroom he reached into his right pants pocket and took out a cellphone. Dialing a number he stepped toward the rail across from the restroom door and waited for an answer. After five rings he finally got through.

"Yeah, this is Cain Vincent. I need a clean up and security check at LAX. It's in the upstairs lobby restroom. If anything though see to it that you get the security tape. Can't have any evidence left now can we? Alright I'll be waiting."

He put his phone back in his pocket and leaned up against the rail.

"I wonder what Aaron and Terry have been up to lately?" he thought. "Sure hope they haven't had too much trouble yet."
