Chance's Encounters

Chapter High School Days end.

The two lay on top of the hill overlooking the town and up at the stars.

"I just want to...leave this place." Jasper said aloud resting with his paws behind his head, legs crossed as he stared up at the stars above. The hill they were on overlooked the city and yet the German Shepard had his eyes only on the stars above. "Just pack up one day and walk out the door. Never looking back. The bags already packed." He chuckled a bit before going silent, lost in thought.

Chance just laid next to him with his own hand-paws resting on his belly, his legs slightly open and his tail off to the side swaying as if a gentle breeze was blowing a flag. "That's not a bad idea. For once." He added slyly not even looking over at the frowning dog.

"I have lots of good ideas." Jasper replied with a growl but chuckled from his gut.

"Like the peanut butter, banana, caramel smoothies incident?" Chance smiled, recalling the mess they had made and the blender they had destroyed one sunny afternoon. He wasn't sure why the idea of making smoothies had been such a good idea. Maybe it was the two bowls they smoked before hand. That seemed to be more reasonable, giving reason to the unreasonable. It had taken nearly an hour to clean up the sticky, gooey, sticky mess. It had stuck... to everything!

"Ok. So maybe next time I'll soften the peanut butter rather than using the one in the fridge." Jasper grumbled folding his ears back, the only real sign that the dog was embarrassed. Over the years he'd learn not to let his emotions show, never to wear his heart on his sleeves. That's how you become a target.

"And the bananas?" Chance asked innocently as if not already knowing about the whole thing. He smoked catnip often enough these days that he grew a tolerance too it; the last time Jasper tried his catnip, the dog ended up hurling in the toilet the rest of the night.

"I won't use frozen ones next time..." Jasper mumbled under his breath, looking away.

"And the caramel?" The cat went on basking in the dog's misery.

"I won't use it." Jasper stated flatly. Ending the subject.

Silence fell between the two as the cold night air began to set around them and fireflies could be seen at the base of the hill courting one another.

"Lets." Chance said finally breaking the silence around them.

"Let's what?" Jasper asked sitting up with a frown. The dog was thinking of the smoothie failure and was worried that the cat actually wanted to try again. The first time had been such a disaster.

"Lets move away from here." Chance said looking at the dog now, he had turned on his side to face him. The blanket underneath the two scrunching up a bit from where he put his elbow down. "Just the two of us." He said resting back down slowly and looking at the night sky above them. "We'll get jobs." Chance mused aloud, truly beginning to think it over. To escape this town. To get away from his step-mother. And to forget about the church and all those people; his own cross having been stashed in a box under his bed months ago and long since forgotten.

"Jobs?" The dog whined turning around and burying his face in the grass. He had laid his coat out for Chance over the blanket and the cat, the blanket hog he was, had taken both of them for himself over the past hour.

"Save up money. Count our pennies. And once High School is over we can pack our bags and get out this place! Work our tails off and get good scholarships. And just do it. Leave and never look back." Chance said losing himself in thought over it. "Just the two of us." He murmured afterwards a soft purr beginning to rise in his chest as a paw was placed on it. Jasper sat up and looked down at him, supporting his weight with an arm. He rested his other hand on Chance's chest, just letting that purr run up his finger and into his arm so he could feel it in his own chest.

Chance looked over and up at the dog with large mint color cat eyes. His ears folded back as the larger mutt leaned down bumping noses.

"Just try leaving without me." Jasper grinned his ears jumping up before turning his muzzle to the side and deeply kissing the cat, forcing his tongue into his muzzle before rolling on top of him, somehow working his pants off in the same motion.

...

The party was on the second the last school bell of the year rang and every senior was throwing their hats up into the air. They had their chairs up on stage during the graduation ceremony. The only parent to come was Chance's father who had to leave early to take one of Chance's step-sisters to the doctor. A day about Chance had turned into one about the birth of his nephew and he was already forgotten.

Plans were made with the other seniors, pizzas were ordered and even before the two managed to get off stage they were invited to countless parties that were going to happen that night.

At that time the two just shrugged and agreed no one knowing anything about the plans they had that night. About the bags already packed and stored in the trunk of Jasper's old beat up Chevy, underneath a rain mat. That they had been bunkering down, buying what little they could to get buy, saving every penny, working every chance they could and now could finally put their plan into motion.

So when the party that night was coming to a close the two just disappeared into the night never to be heard in the town again. Every now and then Chance did send a letter to his dad, but slowly lost touch as the years went by. So long as Chance was safe and happy, his dad was ok with it.

It was Chance that made the final move. Having drunken nothing but sparkling water that evening, the calico made his way over a little past ten. The dog was hanging out with his school chumps that he would, within the week, forget the names of. Those friends you have that you only ever have during school. Half of them would eventually be forced to join the military; the rest would be druggies, losers still living in their mom's basement years to come. Jasper wouldn't look back on the time he spent with them and wouldn't regret it either.

With a motion of his head Chance got the dog's attention. It made the black lips of the German Shepherd pull into a secret smile, the two knowing something no one else did. It made his heart pound in his chest, his palms sweaty and his tail want to wag non-stop.

"Alright guys, I got to go check something." Jasper said without giving a single farewell. Standing up he shoved his way through the throng of people to meet up with Chance who stood waiting outside the back door. People got angry, someone even was pushed over but Jasper could care less at the dark mutters he got from them. Behind his back. As the two had gotten all High School year long. Secret rumors people never even knew just how true they were.

"Ready?" Chance asked as the glass door was shut behind them.

Jasper shrugged aloof about it all but his tail was wagging now and he couldn't stop all the thoughts running through his head. Was this a good idea? Were they just fooling themselves? Were they only asking for trouble? Would this even work? Did Chance... would Chance stay with him, thick and thin? And it was that last one that pushed his fears away. Chance would always be there for him, thick or thin. No matter where they went.

The cat rolled his eyes before taking the dog's paw at his hesitation and lacing his fingers with Jasper's. And with that the two ran along the swimming pool and out the back gate never looking behind them. Laughing the whole time as they both ran towards their future.
