#14 of Poems

This is a written cover of a wonderful song by Lupe Fiasco called Around My Way. The verses aren't precisely in line and those of you who don't have good rhythm would be better off simply reading it like a poem. Otherwise, this is my response to this godforsaken latest string of scandals by the glorious United States.

Verse 1

Live it, learn it, love it, then promptly forget

That anyone ever told you not to know

Remain unaware of its existence, even though

Every day you're professing its presence

World politics, the government and funded greed

Aren't subjects that the mass should be discussing

Digesting, progressing, realizing this shit is disgusting

Just feed on the entertaining food that they feed

You, and everyone else that you know

Or at least think you did, until they surprise you

Recognize you, for who you really are

Not just another brainwashed sheep been molested

By those liars who profess to represent them

See the nonexistent lines of separation

Lack of clarification, motivation; the uninspiring rewiring

Of our tiring minds that they're buying

And selling, to any corporation willing to pay

Pennies to nickel and dime us

Throwing shiny quarters out to blind us

Reminding us of our place on the lowly ground

While we're counting bills, they're out counting pounds

Laughing at all the clowns wallowing and indifferent

Climaxing to the sounds of our blissful ignorance

Chorus

Here I am looking up at the sky

Asking myself the all-encompassing "why"

Did we allow this to pass by

Is it too late to even try

Now I'm here looking down at the dirt

Amazed by the success of their diabolic work

Pounding on doors, spreading the truth to fight the fake

Cyber defibulator in hand just to shock them awake

Verse 2

Minutes, hours, days and many years

Precious time to turn this country into the enemy

Taxes, snooping, lack of constitutional integrity

This place now analogous to our forefathers' fears

Yet we sit back, kick back, kick rocks, skip rocks

Never taking the time to turn our attention to what matters

When shit splatters we don't matter, but so few observe

Laws rewritten to undermine the masses

Education curriculumized to subvert school classes

Individualism expiring as the inspiration of creation dies

Subverting everyone there to a mouthful of lies

We have to realize that history not learned

Is history repeated, the dead mistreated

Those that spilled blood to teach us

What to fight for and what to avoid

Their lives they paid crapped on and scorned

Yet what matters most to us is not what should

The American government yet again up to no good

Spying, leeching, bugging hundreds of millions

Teachers barely above the poverty line

While "National Security" rakes in hundreds of billions

To feed the craving feelings of paranoid villains

My spine chilling as I realize we're dealing

With a whole new breed of criminalized righteousness

Enslave us all and tell us where to go

Eagerly blindfolded and deafened to live in a world of ignorance

Chorus

Here I am looking to the left and right

Seeing nothing but dumb sheep to the edges of sight

Is the wolf really evil if his goal is to inform

Am I really a terrorist if I refuse to conform

Now I just sit here, trying to figure it out

Seizing all the info available so I won't doubt

Even for a second that we're in a world rife with evil

Too many sinister demons in this population of people

Verse 3

This ain't sass smack, this ain't a rap track

This is nothing more than an educated class act

Years of what I was sure was being done now fact

So I'll address it all with all the tact of a pissed off cat

America was built on privacy, built on freedom, built on good

Yet you trash it with brazen intrusions, creating more tragedy

Freedom becoming less reality and more misguided philosophy

The positives so tainted, so rotten that they're like five year old food

I will not stand here and be taken from the back

I refuse to cut them slack, they're all hacks driven by the dollars

Driven by the greed of the paper that they print so freely

It's time to stand up, to buck up, to raise hell and realize what's up

No more getting dimed out for a cheap buck

No more staying clueless to reality

No more staying oblivious to the poverty racing around this nation

No more

And I'll say this loudly, say this proudly, resoundingly

Your time is coming to an end, no more can you pretend

That you can keep us grounded, keep on pounding the nails

Into our coffins, sending us to our grave before we even take our first breath

Of what's left

I won't let our American ignorance starve us to death

Chorus (Actual Chorus of Song)

Coming live from the other side of what you see

A bunch of nonsense on my tv

Heaven on earth is what I need

But I feel I'm in Hell every time I breathe

Reporting live from the other side of what you hear

A bunch of nonsense all in my ear

Rich man, poor man, we all gotta pay

Cuz Freedom ain't free, 'specially around our way
