Chance's Encounters

Chapter High School Days Sophomore Year

By Roofles

Chance was heading down the hall with a book bag slung over one shoulder. The cat had a pair of thin half rimmed glasses over his eyes. It only magnified the brilliant mint green cat eyes that looked up in front of him down the empty hallway. School was out for the day and Chance had to go back in order to get a science book he needed for the homework this night.

Leaning against his locker was a gruff, scruffy looking dog however. In a black leather jacket, silver chains and skulls hanging off it, a short Mohawk and a black silver studded collar was a German shepherd he nearly didn't recognize. At the same he did. It was the same one that very morning who pushed him into the mud.

The dog stood up as he approached pushing off the locker and denting it slightly as he did so. "Sup." Was a gruff reply the cat got. Chance could see several fresh cuts on the German Shepherd's face, lips and through one eyebrow.

"Sup." Chance said lightly one of his ears flicking as if an annoying fly was buzzing around it. His tail flicked to the opposite side before swaying back and never stopped moving. "What do you want?" He tried to keep his voice even but it was sharp and the cat could feel his nails beginning to poke free.

The dog stuffed his paws into his pocket. "Nothing much really," the shepherd wasn't even looking at the cat but everywhere else. "What are you still doing here?" He asked as if accusing him of something.

"I forgot my science book." Chance said as lightly as ever though his eyes didn't stray from the dog.

"Ah. Science. Class is shit." Chance didn't reply. "The teacher has it out for me." Jasper went on not noticing. "I haven't done shit yet. Barely go to class as it is and she still has a stick up her ass."

Chance, once more didn't say anything watching the dog who seemed to be forcing himself to continue speaking.

"Bunch of bullshit really. She needs to get laid or something." Jasper grumbled.

"Yeah." Chance smiled softly and chuckled. "That sounds about right." He looked haggard, worn as if he had just gotten off a battlefield. But underneath that mask, that tough guy act was still Jasper.

Jasper looked over at him finally and a smile crossed his face. "So...your science book?"

"Right." Chance chuckled again walking past him to his locker though his spite for the dog was still lingering inside. "You know if you ever have problems in the class. I can always help you study." Chance twisted the number lock several times before opening it and grabbing his book. "Or something." He added afterwards shutting the locker and just looking down at the floor.

"You're such a nerd." Jasper laughed. And just looked at the cat, seeing that familiar way he'd stare down at the ground when he was nervous. Anxious. Or worried. He might as well be all the above.

"I'm a geek, not a nerd. If you're going to insult me at least do it properly. Dumb dog." Chance said turning around and sticking his tongue out. He stopped though and pulled back a bit as the much larger dog. He was far closer than Chance originally had been aware of.

Jasper leaned against the locker next to Chance's and looked down at the cat. "I think I might just take you up on that offer though."

"You'd be so lucky." Chance snidely reply, still keeping as much distance as he could without actually withdrawing.

The dog just looked down at him and Chance felt as if he had said the wrong thing before the dog laughed loudly. A very bark like laugh. "Haha, you're a funny pussy." The way he said it made Chance feel as if they were just meeting for the first time.

"Haha, yeah." Chance stopped though. "Look. I got to get...going."

"I'll walk with you." Jasper stood back up pushing against the locker once more and adding another dent.

"Look." Chance said not making eye contact. "I think I'll go. By myself."

The dog caught his arm. "What do you mean?" He let go the next second though at the look he got from the cat as if the smaller male was literally about to claw his eyes out. "Chance..." Jasper said pulling back and looking away. "I didn't mean to."

"What didn't you mean to do?" Chance shot back the back of his fur standing on end. "Was it ignoring me this morning? Or how about picking on me with the rest of those dumb mutts? Oh!" Chance clapped his hands together as if the light bulb just turned on over head. "Was it when you shoved me into the mud and had everyone laugh at me? I bet that was it, right?" Chance growled lifting up the corner of his muzzle to show his teeth off. A cat's nails weren't their only tool in self defense.

The cat glared with daggers for eyes lifting his hand up a bit as if he was going to slap him. A claw kind of slap. The cat however turned away, his fur resting back down and shook his head. "Just...fuck off Jasper."

The German Shepherd growled in a low tone before turning away and heading off.

"It was good to see you again though." Chance spoke in a soft whisper making the dog stop. If anyone else had been in the hall his voice might've been lost. "Despite what happened." He added coldly afterwards.

"Look! Get off my back about it! Not like I wanted to. Just the guys and it's just..." Jasper turned around snarling as he spoke.

The cat matched his pace and turned back to face him hissing now. "Oh yeah! Friends! I forgot what that's like! Being stabbed in the back and all!"

"Stabbed in the back?" Jasper groaned. "Your such a drama fucking queen! It's not you talked to me or anything since I've been gone!" The dog now took a step forward jabbing him in the shoulder with a finger.

"The fuck you talking about?" Chance back handed his paw from his shoulder. "I called you like every damn day! You're the one too busy to talk to me. Always out or sleeping or...or something! I knew you didn't want to talk to me but I just..." And Chance faltered then, tears in his eyes. "I just needed to hear you say it. Grow some balls. And just..." Chance shivered as if a cold draft blew. "Just say you don't want too see me, hang out with my anymore."

"What the hell are you talking about?" Jasper raised an eyebrow and stood up a bit. "You never called me. Or texted. Or anything."

"I did all that!" Chance crossed his arms the end of his tail flicking back and forth quickly. "I even furbook you several times. I sent letters! Anything and you didn't reply so I thought you just..." Chance shoulders fell. "Fuck it." He said turning away from him. "If you hated me that much... Fuck it."

"I didn't get anything..." Jasper mumbled a bit growling to himself figuring it was either his dad or step mom. His ears folded back. "So ok. Maybe I over reacted. Seeing you this morning. With your friends and ignoring me..."

"So you ignored me and pushed me into the mud?" Chance looked at him in disbelief. "What are you? Five?"

Jasper just growled looking away. Chance flinched as Jasper punched the locker, hard enough to dent it. There was a moment's pause between them.

"Sorry, I didn't hear that." Chance stated folding his arms.

"I'm sorry..."

"For?" Chance pressed glaring at the larger dog.

"For...pushing you..." He grumbled some more and Chance just continued to looking at him. "In the mud..."

"Ok." Chance said his tail stopped wagging. "I guess that's a start. You're buying me a new jacket! That was my favorite one."

"God!" Jasper whined pulling his ears. "Drama queen! What are you? Like five." The dog poorly tried to counter him with his own insult.

The two glowered at each other, eyes smoldering, for several seconds.

Chance raised an eyebrow just then. "So tell me...you still have a sock fetish?"

The dog's ears folded back. "Shut your face." He glared at the cat but the corner of his black lip muzzle curled into a smile and his tail wagged.

Chance just smiled knowingly and shrugged with a shake of his head. "You're so pathetic." The dog growled but his tail continued to wag. "So tell me? Did you ever throw away those cloths I left at your place...?"

The cat asked as the two walked down the hallway together.
