Chance's Encounters

Chapter: Middle School 8th grade

By Roofles

Chance was in bed with his paws sticking off the end. The plastic controller in hand he stared, drone like at the screen in front of him pushing buttons. In nothing but a pair of old shorts the cat had his lower torso and legs hidden underneath his blankets. His hind paws had tight white socks on that formed around his paws and toes; sweaty from the wearing them all day.

He wasn't the only one on the bed.

Next to him was a German Shepherd that was only a month older than the cat. Jasper was only in his tighty whities and one of his socks had been taken off. The dog was playing along with him as second player, marveling at everything this system had to offer. His own family had cursed, screamed and shouted when he had asked for one last Christmas. To be able to actually play one was all his young heart had desired.

Jasper was staring at the screen with a fixated fascination of the "sheer awesomeness."

"Yeah it's rather neat." Chance replied a bit drone like. The cat blinked a few times coming back to reality after they cleared the level.

Jasper had gone back to his odd hobby of chewing. Chewing socks that is. Particularly Chance's old used ones. The cat really didn't get it and Jasper only said it was a dog thing. So the cat just watched him as he leaned back on the bed.

The German Shepherd was the classic black fur, brown markings with tan paws. He had grown in the past year and was taller and broader than the cat was now. A strange thing for Chance to see. They had been roughly the same size since childhood. Then one day Jasper just hit a growth spurt, finally growing into his over sized paws, and now the dog was beginning to get several more inches. It wasn't so apparent but his shoulders had begun to broaden and a strong jaw line was forming. Chance was sure he would look a lot like his dad when he grew older; at least his fur pattern was different. The brown was only markings on his face and chest with tan paws, arms and legs. It gave him far softer features than Jasper's father had, a man that scared Chance.

Chance himself was still on the thinner side not exactly gaining any mass in the past year. He was told he was very good looking by the teachers and the girls did seem to giggle a lot more whenever he walked by. It was a sad change though the cat felt as he watched the dog. How different they were slowly becoming from each other. They had been so much alike when they were kids. And now Jasper looked as if he should start trying out for State football. Chance looked like he should start acting, not to go on his looks alone but his charisma and smile could make even the teachers change their mind about giving him a B on a test instead of an A.

The dog continued to chew on the sock, pulling at it with his paws as he chomped down on it. Chance could hear the sock rip between his teeth.

"Oh. Woops." Jasper said his ears perking up at the sound before folding back. He pulled the torn fabric from between his teeth. He swallowed the last bits before resting back and looking at him semi apologetic but his tail was still wagging happily whenever he managed to chew on something Chance owned.

"That's about the fifteenth this month." Chance said sitting up a bit before resting back as the game continued to load. Chance tossed his hair back, out of his eyes and Jasper watched him with envy wishing he could have such nice hair. The cat let out a groan seeing the tv screen, covering his face with an arm.

"Didn't this month just start?" Jasper thought about it having to count the days out, ending with his toes. "It's the eleventh right?"

"Twelfth, actually." Chance said sitting up and watched the dog staring at his toes before laughing. Jasper wiggled his toes.

Jasper looked over before grinning. Chance just kicked him with his leg at the stupid expression on the dogs face. The dog grabbed his leg and pulled him closer making the cat let out a startled mrow. Jasper held the leg that had kicked him tightly before biting the end of the sock Chance was wearing and pulling it off in a clean, semi forced motion.

"H-hey!" Chance nearly shouted watching as yet another sock got stolen. "That's mine!" Foolishly he grabbed the end of the long sock and began trying to pull it away. This only began a very one sided game of tug of war.

Chance was soon pulled on top of the dog as Jasper continued to play and the cat tried to get his sock back. Jasper kept pulling him further and further with the sock until the cat was literally on top of the dog. Chance's chest was now laying across the dogs.

The sweaty sock was a strange taste and even Jasper had no idea as to why he did as he did. He enjoyed it though staring back into those mint color eyes looking down at him. The cat was mrowing a bit lower now in a glowing glare at Jasper with folded ears and straight white, wispy whiskers. The orange splotched, black masked, white necked face made the dog's tail just wag faster. Jasper did what he did to see that look on Chance's face.

"Fine!" Chance said giving up and withdrew. This made the dog's tail stop and his ears fold back as he watched the cat get up and walk across the room. "Here!" Chance said picking up his dirty laundry and turned around dumping it on the dog. "Have these as well."

The dog stood his ground looking at him with socks hanging off his muzzle, around his ears and covering the nearly naked dog. Chance glared at him before his face cracked and he laughed at the dog sitting on his bed.

"Sorry." Chance laughed crawling over to pull the jock strap from the dog's muzzle.

Jasper pulled back and a grin spread across the dog's face and Chance already saw what was coming.

"No! Nonononono," Chance begged but the larger German Shepherd was already rolling back and forth on the bed making the cat pull his large ears down and meow.

Chance quickly tried to stop him but only got mixed up in the mess and was rolled on top of the dog as Jasper did as dog's do.

"Gah! Disgusting!" Chance said pulling himself free. The cat began licking his paws and smoothing out his messy fur, grumbling to himself.

"Oh like your any cleaner." Jasper teased pushing him with a hind paw. Chance shirked away from his sweaty, smelling socked paw.

"Cleaner than you." Chance said sticking his tongue out.

The dog couldn't argue looking at the laundry on him. He picked up one of the cats used jockstraps and sniffed it. His nose wrinkled and he tossed it aside. Afterwards Jasper licked his black nose looking at the cat. Chance was smoothing out his hair and arms with his hands.

Jasper had noticed that his mother was similar in nature. Most cats seemed to be. Rather than rolling around in the mud they rather spend the time grooming themselves. Something he didn't fully grasp. Why clean yourself up if you were just going to get messy again? It was the same logic why he didn't clean his own room.

The dog scooted closer as the cat continued to groom himself using his own scratch tongue as a brush for some of the messier areas. So Jasper mimicked his action and licked at the cat's fur.

Chance stopped as the thick tongue lapped at the side of his face covering it in thick tendrils of saliva that were still connected to the dog's muzzle. The cats fur poofed out in several areas making him appear as if he had just gone through the dryer. As a giant fuzz ball the cat froze as the dog continued licking the side of his muzzle and cheek.

The warm wet tongue was one thing but the dog's breath finally made the cat push him away. "Hey now." Chance said with a growl folding his blushing ears back. His tail sway quickly behind him betraying his turmoil of the action.

"You're such a fuss bucket." Jasper teased scooting a bit closer placing a paw on his leg. The dog leaned in a bit more. "Was only trying to help."

"And what if I licked you all over, huh?" Chance shot back though his voice was a lot more meek and soft than he wanted it to be.

Jasper pulled back scratching his chin as he thought it over. Chance was joking from the start and was flushing even more now that Jasper was actually thinking it over. The dog laid back on the bed and wiggled his toes up at him. "Start with these then!"

He laughed and Chance smiled swatting the leg out of his face like a cat would with a feather toy. His nails didn't extend and his soft white fur paw swatted the dogs.

Jasper raised an eyebrow before laughing a bit pushing his foot against the cat who pulled back swatting at it more. Light small taps that barely connected. The dog knew however from experience that if those claws were out it would be a whole other story but now it was nothing but taps.

The dog moved his paw back and forth slowly watching as the cat watched it intently. The cat's focus was only on it. The dog's tail began to wag and he teased him some more before pulling back and sitting up smiling across at the cat who looked up at him with those large mint color cat eyes. They seemed to widen like that of a kittens and the dog could feel his heart pounding in his chest.

Jasper scooted over wanting to scoop the cat up and then tackle him to bed but instead he just bumped his nose against the side of his muzzle. And he smiled at the smile he got from that. He wagged his tail at the hand that was placed on his leg and wouldn't deny the butterflies dancing around in his stomach.

At the same time however across the way in Jasper's house a much larger, older male dog was coming into Jasper's room. The blinds of both windows were fully drawn and the older male began to growl, low and deep staring across at his son being so friendly with the cat...
