Chance Encounters

Chapter Middle School

By Roofles

Chance kicked the soccer ball with as much force as he could muster. Not able to actually kick it to any of his team mates he decided it was best just to get it as far away from their goal as possible. Some of the other kids got on him about it but at that time the cat was already exhausted, tired and covered from head to toe in sweat and mud. It was a good work out but Chance never liked these physical sports as much as academics.

The ref blew the whistle making the cat keel over and pant. He looked up to see that he had kicked the ball out of bounds and none of the players on the other team had bothered to stop it from rolling out. This gave them a free throw and a few more grumbling insults from his team mates. Chance felt bad but didn't let it get to him as he stood back up, adjusting himself a bit, and continued the game. At first.

His ears folded back and the tip of his tail twitched back and forth quickly showing his dismay as a few seconds later, a rhino on his team shoved him to the side as he passed by, telling Chance off about it once more. That this was why they were losing the game. A second or two later the coach called him over and out of the game clearly upset about the play he had made. They were already losing and the coach, an Oryx, took the game a little too seriously the cat thought. Chance's dad always told him that it was just a game and in the end you should only have fun.

He wasn't having fun right now.

So he took a seat on the bench panting heavily as sweat trickled down his brow, between his eyes and down the sides of his muzzle. Chance could hear some of the parents talking about the play and it only dampened his spirits further. It was only the dog jogging past him that made him raise his head up to continue watching the game.

Jasper was out on the field since the start of the game. Chance would never say it but most to all the players were in fact canines. They just seemed to have limitless bounds of energy that the coach exploited. Chance couldn't argue as he watched Jasper run from one side of the field to the other still wagging his tail, panting but with more than enough energy left over to continue through the third and fourth quarter of the game.

Jasper jogged by but turned away to wave at Chance and ended up running into another player. The cat grinned at the dog that stumbled back to his feet and embarrassingly continued onwards. Jasper chuckled to himself blushing under his black fur, having been showing off for his friend only a few seconds before. Chance smiled at that and laughed along even though the parents on the side began to shout at the ref to call a fowl for it. That he had done it on purpose or something, unaware that neither of the two even cared about the silly game.

Jasper just ignored the shouting that changed into curses before the bear had to be dragged off the field and the game was shortly interrupted. It was only with the threat of his son being kicked off the team that the large bear backed down, leaving the field to take a smoke break.

It was at this that, during the beginning of the fourth quarter that Chance noticed his mother, his step-mother wasn't there. Most likely working again, just like the last ten games. In other words. Every one of them. Even at his age the calico cat knew the reason and the need as to why she needed to work so much. Yet his young mind couldn't fully comprehend the real needs behind the work. And it didn't make it easier for him in the short run either. Every time she said she'd come and every time she wouldn't. By the end of it he wasn't even bothering to look. His dad was out with the girls again, spending more and more time with them and leaving him to his own ways.

Jasper ran by again, backwards, with his tongue hanging out panting heavily. The sight distracted Chance from his thoughts and he found himself laughing again at the dogs antics. The team shirt Jasper wore was soaked through, sticking to his matted fur in the front and back. The dog was soon hit in the back with the ball and spun around to continue playing though the two still chuckled over it as Jasper rubbed the back of his skull. Chance would make a comment that at least he hadn't injured anything important.

It was one of those things. Chance would've quit the team as it was, not really being into sports as it was. Yet the two could do the task together. Something that was a benefit in and of itself. And as the team began to clear out not even exchanging sportsmanship shakes afterwards, they could remain on the field to kick the ball around. The two of them without "stupid adults" getting in their way.

It was a simple yet enjoyable task that kept them busy and gave them a chance to talk.

Because they lost Jasper would be walking home, his dad not about to give him a lift after "losing to a bunch of dumbasses." It would take some time for Chance's dad to clean up the side picnic, having arrived only at the very end of the game, he had made for them. Chance could never get mad at his dad, even if he felt left out most the time. His dad was just doing the best he could with what he was given. A starving artist, home dad that had to raise the three of them without a mother's support.

"Thanks, Chance's dad." Jasper said taking a Kool Aide from the cooler. He tossed one to the cat who grabbed it and just as quickly began to chug it down. The two kids raced to see who could do it first.

Jasper won. Jasper always won and he wouldn't let Chance forget it either. It was one of those small things Jasper never fully understood, but picking on the cat and making him flush was something he always would do.

"Always so slow." The dog teased running ahead after discarding his drink. The cat finished his a few seconds after, blushing a bit. He tossed his into the garbage and picked up the one Jasper had discarded, dropping it into the garbage too before joining the dog.

"I'm not the energizer bunny." Chance said back still panting a bit from the game. His legs were tired and sore and he desperately needed a bath. He kept having the urge to lick his paws and smooth his fur out but resisted. It just felt weird, his fur all messed up as it was. As if something was on his face and he desperately wanted to wipe it off.

"I'm a dog." Jasper frowned stopping in the field with the extra ball Chance's Dad brought with them to practice with before the game, even if he hadn't been there to give it to them that early.

Chance jogged up to him before darting forward and stealing the ball away. "And I'm a cat." Chance laughed back dribbling down the field with the ball, kicking it with his feet side to side and not even needing to focus on it.

Jasper easily caught up, snuck around and stole the ball making the cat chase after him. Chance wasn't sure how he had that much energy left after it all, having used the last of his own just to steal the ball in the first place. So the cat jogged after him before giving up and swiping a clawed fingered paw at him. The nails retreated just as quickly as they had appeared.

Jasper wagged his tail looking back over his shoulder at him. The distance between the two had grown and Jasper's tail stopped wagging at that. So the dog turned around slowly and passed the ball back. Chance blocked it easily, getting the picture and kicked it back.

Back and forth they went.

"So we giving you a lift?" Chance asked lightly already knowing the answer.

"Yup." Jasper reply was flat and void of any emotion. His voice was dry and hollow before he perked back up and passed the ball back to him. "At least I get to play with you some more." The dog offered a bit childishly. Just how blunt he was caught Chance off guard and the cat blushed a bit before kicking the ball back, unsure why he was blushing to begin with. And for some reason he had to adjust his pants again as if they had shrunk a size or two.

"Ya' playing with my balls." Chance reply snidely, teasing him. Jasper was used to the cat and laughed along with him afterwards.

"Dogs love chasing balls." Jasper said missing the ball and jogging after it. Jasper hadn't meant too but what he said worked perfectly with missing the ball and Chance had thought he had done it on purpose.

The two laughed before Chance's dad called for them.

The two sweaty, muddy kids jogged over to him bumping into each other as they went joking back and forth as they slipped into the back of the minivan.

Sitting on the towel laid out for them the two kids continued to push and shove each other arguing about who had got to the van first. Jasper had gotten to it first but Chance argued that he was the one to get IN the van so he technically won. Chance pushed him against the window and scooted to the other side sticking his tongue out. He raised a socked paw, having kicked his shoes off and putting them into the bucket his dad got for them; using the paw he kept the dog at bay before Jasper pounced on him tackling him against the other window.

"I said I won." Jasper growled with a huge grin on his face.

"Alright, alright!" Chance laughed pushing him back. "I give. Ya' big lug." Chance grumbled rubbing the back of his head where it had lightly hit the window. The dog folded his ears back at the look he got but his tail wagged as Chance straightened up and buckled up.

Jasper took the seat next to him and buckled in, shoving him lightly with his thigh. Chance rolled his eyes and looked out the window thinking nothing of the closeness between them or the fact they were holding each other's paws half way on the trip home. How warm Jasper's paw felt in his and how safe he felt with the dog so near. And once more Chance found himself feeling confused as to why there were butter flys dancing in his stomach.

It was a short trip down the main free way that cut through the town and off the side path. They got Chubby Cheese and the two were munching the rest of their cheese battered, cheese coated pizza the rest of the way home. Arguing some more the two jumped out in nothing but their socks and shorts, fighting each other as they made their way across the lawn and up to Chance's front door.

It was common business by now for the dog to stay over at their place and Chance's Dad was just glad to see his boy getting along so well with the neighbor. And a dog no less. At a young age Chance's Dad wasn't on such good terms with the dogs in the neighborhood or during school and had gotten bullied a lot. And as he watched the two boys fight each other to get up the stairs first, he envied the fact that they could be friends.

Chance shut the door on Jasper, somehow miraculously making it to the room before the dog. That might've had something to do with his "dirty cat tactics" Jasper had said, a slang his dad would use rather often but the young kids didn't think much over it. The two just laughed as Jasper shoved the door open, clearly the stronger of the two, and wrestled with the cat until the two were on the floor tossing and turning each trying to get on top. To be "top dog," something Jasper took rather seriously however.

It was only when the dog managed to over power Chance and sit on his face did the two stop. Freezing in that moment both feeling just as awkward as the other, neither of the two catching themselves in time before Jasper had pushed his sweaty bulge against Chance's face. The dog's muscular legs rubbed the sides of the cat's short muzzle. The smell was intense, distinct and the heat washing over his face was undeniable. And the two just stayed there until Chance finally moved, pushing the dog off.

He felt hot. Uncomfortable. Things he couldn't explain such as why he was blushing so much and he didn't want the dog to see him like this.

"I need to take a shower." The cat said quickly excusing himself.

"Hey." Jasper said. His throat had grown suddenly dry and he swallowed loudly. "Chance." The dog said chasing after him into the bathroom.

"Get out." Chance said not looking at the dog and covering his snout. He kept trying to wipe that musky smell off but couldn't get rid of it. "Go on." He said pushing the dog out, still able to smell him. To feel that warmth on his face. And it just made him so...uncomfortable. "Out!" He said again, still covering his face from the dog.

"I'm sorry, sorry." Jasper said, pressing the issue and not letting the cat just leave like that. He needed to make sure he was ok. "You alright? I didn't hurt you did I?" He asked softly now, his eyes growing large as his ears folded. The door was open behind him and it was just the two of them in the bathroom. It wasn't a large bathroom and even with the lights off, door open the had grown stuffy.

"Like you could." Chance grumbled crossing his arms, looking away and still trying to calm the flush on his face.

"Ah, come on." Jasper said moving a bit closer. "Here." He motioned as if to get on the ground. "You can beat me this time."

Chance held his tongue as to the reason why he wasn't in the mood anymore. It wasn't the fact he was beaten but how Jasper had done it.

"Go on." Jasper said looking up at him, sitting only on his knees now.

Chance just blushed more, folding his large ears back. "No. Just get out. I need to take a shower."

"Ok." Jasper said standing back up and beginning to take his soccer shorts off. "Where can I get an extra towel?"

"H-hey!" Chance said feeling even hotter in the face and in other places. "What are you doing?"

"Showering. Duh." Was the reply he got. The German Shepherd looked at him, lifting a brown eyebrow. "Like in the locker rooms." Though as he said this the dog shut the bathroom door leaving the two of them alone. "I'll scrub your back. You get mine."

Jasper swallowed looking into the mint eyes that looked at him. He could feel his chest tighten as his paws curled into fists. The dog knew adults did it. His dad always took one of his lady friends in with him though he was never sure why; the older dog was always happy when the two got out. Just because Jasper's mom didn't know about it, didn't mean his dad hadn't been happy about it. Jasper wanted to be happy like that, and Chance was...

Chance didn't respond just rubbing his arm and looking down between them. He could feel Jasper breath against his head, feel the dog's warmth standing in front of him. He could make out Jasper's bare toes and the large bulge in his undies, the front was slightly damp but Chance thought it was just because of the sweat from soccer. Chance shivered but it wasn't cold.

"It's ok." Jasper said softly moving a bit closer. He placed a paw on his shoulder. Unsure what to do with the other the dog just kept it up and out of the way though no matter where he put it it just didn't feel right. "I-If you don't want to. I mean I could lock the door though." Jasper said quickly trying to cut off any refusal the cat would offer.

"Well." Chance said giving the dog enough leeway for him to continue.

"Do you need a hand." Jasper teased now nosing down at him.

The dog had been the same size throughout the years and one day he began to grow while the cat stayed his short size. And now the dog was already a half foot taller than him, let alone for the tone muscular natural body he possessed from his German Shepherd heritage. Chance was lean, scrawny almost but quick on his feet, able to keep his balance where the dog struggled and was far more flexible.

"I don't need your help, ball chaser." Chance snidely reply sticking his pink tongue out.

Jasper licked his pink nose at that.

The cat pulled back shocked before the two laughed neither really thinking anything of it even though they stood so close to each other. Chance had to look up at Jasper and he could feel that breath against his face once more. "Haha, ok. Ok. But don't tell my dad." Was Chance's reply. And it went without saying that neither would be telling Jasper's dad or anyone else as they slipped their shorts off. No one would know. As no one needed to know. This was just the two of them.

Standing in a pair of tighty whities the dog looked down, lifting an eyebrow up at the cat's jock strap.

"What?" Chance said feeling the flush take his face. Instinctively his tail curled around his side and over his front attempting to cover himself up. "My dad said that all real sports stars wear these." He looked down at himself before blushing even more. "Only now do I realize he was joking." And his voice faltered. Chance insecurities beginning to weld up inside him once more. He had just wanted to be like those sport stars, good at sports so nobody picked on him anymore.

"No, no!" Jasper said raising his paws up his face splitting in two at the grin on his face. "It looks good. Yeah. Sure." The dog laughed teasing him now poking at his sides and tickles his stomach.

"Oh shut your face hole." Chance blushed pushing his paws away. "You dumb face."

"Oh good one." Jasper rolled his eyes, having moved a half step closer to the smaller male. His best friend in the whole world.

"So's your face." Chance said back sticking his tongue out.

And the two laughed at the stupidity of it.

"Jerk." Chance said swatting his paw away and off his tail, Jasper loved playing with Chance's tail .

When it was just the two the dog could get very touchy feely. Chance didn't mind much but it still made him uncomfortably warm at times. Specially now. And those eyes lingering on him made him feel as if he were on display even if it were just the two of them.

Chance turned around and leaned over to pull the jock strap up. His tail lifted up at the strap slid down it exposing his tight pink tail hole before he stood back up quickly letting the jock strap fall to the ground.

Jasper's tail wagged once as he stared shamelessly.

The dog followed suit without hesitation standing proudly next to him. Pulling the curtain back he let the cat go first who looked up into that face. And with it Chance felt the uncertainty just fade away. With a smile he moved inside the tub. And the dog followed shutting the curtain behind them as he fussed with the water, not even looking at the dials as he stared at Chance the whole time.
