#11 of Jumbe and Sala

Paradise Lost

While Sala makes new friends, Jumbe faces an old prejudice.

Jumbe moved through the grass, looking around for something to eat. He was fairly sure he smelled something delicious that he and Sala could munch on, then again, he wasn't sure if Sala would eat carrion if that was what he found. As he snuck along, whatever he was smelling became stronger and stronger, and then a bit too strong. As he poked his head over a berm, he saw something both delicious and stomach churning. There was a massive warthog in front of him, rutting around under a log. He certainly looked good enough to eat, but that stench was unbearable. Jumbe exhaled hard before turning around. There had to be some kind of game animal around here, something a bit more appealing than the warthog.

Simba and Kovu had been walking through the Pride Lands, the elder lion teaching his new son-in-law how to be king, something that wasn't an easy task, but the younger male was catching on. As the two discussed the finer details of rule, they noticed something overhead, circling over them before gliding down, fluttering his wings as he landed. "Good morning, Zazu," Simba said, looking at him, half expecting the bird to have something extremely mundane, that was until he noticed the look on the bird's face, "What's wrong?" The bird panted, lifting a feather into the air, completely out of breath. Between gasps, he finally was able to say, "Hyena! Pride Lands!" The two lions were awestruck, unable to believe what they heard. There hadn't been a hyena in the Pride Lands in many seasons. The two lions looked at the hornbill, speaking almost at once, "WHERE!"

Zazu had finally regained enough air to finally speak, "Watering hole. He looked like he was getting ready to hunt." The massive lion nodded, "Take us there." Kovu looked at his father-in-law, "Shouldn't we get help?"

"There isn't enough time," the elder lion said before looking back at the bird, "How many?"

"Just one sire."

"There could be more," The massive lion growled, "And if it's a rogue he can be very dangerous, especially to cubs. Rogues won't question killing a child. Either way, we have to make an example of this hyena for others of his race that they are not welcome here." Simba looked at the hornbill, "Fly, we'll follow you." All Zazu could do is nod and take flight, as Simba ran after him, Kovu following close behind.

Jumbe had hoped to find some game today, but he hadn't had any luck and the sun was nearing its peak. As he trounced along, he finally spotted something to his liking. A gazelle was nibbling on the grass, the breeze blowing in the scent towards him. He crouched low in the grass, preparing for the attack.

Zazu was overhead able of the Simba and Kovu, the two lions running at a full gallop after the bird. His eyes spotted the hyena in the tall grass, body low. The bird almost called out, but rather, he pointed with his wing. The two lions raced towards the spot he was aiming at.

Jumbe watched the gazelle for a few more seconds before he pounced, teeth bared, the gazelles back turned to him. It would be an easy kill. He seemed to float through the air towards his prey, but out of the corner of his eye, he saw a streak of gold and brownish red coming towards him.

Simba's paws impacted the blonde hyena's ribs, knocking him off course from the gazelle, flying back. He watched as the hyena's body whipped into his out stretched forelegs, watching his spine and neck adjusts to the impact as he pushed him to the ground. The smaller mammal impacted the ground, knocking the wind out of him. The lion's massive paws pressed him into the ground as he struggled to get free. The lion's paw slipped and the hyena started to scamper, but Kovu jumped on his back, clawed paws raking down his ribs before digging into his rump, making his yelp in pain as he tried to keep moving forward, dragging the much larger lion behind him. Simba scampered over, massive paw drawn back before colliding with the hyena's cheek, knocking him out. The two lions panted, looking at the now unconscious hyena laying on the ground before them. Kovu retracted his claws, moving over to scoop him up in his mouth, teeth brushing against the hyena's jugular. Simba looked at his son-in-law, "We'll take him back to Pride Rock." The king turned his head to the hornbill, "Zazu, gather the animals, it is time we make an example." The bird nodded as he took flight, "Yes, sire."

Vitani and Sala raced through the grassland, bouncing and playing a bit as they went, the pair laughing excitedly as they neared Pride Rock. As soon as they were over the hill, Sala started to slow down, her eyes widening in astonishment, "Wow." The elder lioness looked back at her, "It's big isn't it?"

"Is that where you live," the cub asked, completely in awe at the sight of the massive rock formation. Her new mother smiled, "It's where all the lions of the pride live." Sala's tail flicked, "Really? I've never seen anything like it." Her mother smiled, "It's certainly unique. It's where we all live, including the Kings."

"Are they nice kings? Do you think they'll like me," the little cub asked, looking up at Vitani. The older lioness smiled, "Of course they're nice. I'm sure they'll all love you." She moved over to her new daughter, giving her a warm nuzzle on the cheek, "You'll never know if they're nice or if they like you if you stay right here." The cub nodded, "Okay, momma."

Nala had been sunning herself on a rock near the base of Pride Rock as had many of the others. Now the eldest female of the pride, she still looked as beautiful as she did the day she became a true lioness, or at least what everyone told her. She smiled warmly at her daughter, Kiara. The lion queen was carrying her first litter. Nala remembered doing the same thing many seasons ago. As she looked at her daughter, she heard someone approaching, ears flicking around before she turned her head. A warm, motherly smile crossed her face as she saw Vitani and a beautiful cub she'd never seen before. She rolled her hips, turning her body around to face Vitani. "Good morning, Vitani," she smiled happily, tail flicking.

"Good morning Nala," the younger lioness smiled back, walking up to her, giving her a soft nuzzle as Sala crept up beside her, a little curious and afraid at the same time. The old lioness leaned her head down, "Hello, little one, who are you?" Sala hid behind her mother's legs, peaking out a little. Nala smiled at her warmly as Vitani looked down at her, "It's all right. She won't hurt you." Sala nodded and slowly stepped out from behind Vitani's legs, looking at the older female. Nala looked down at the cub with a warm, motherly smile on her face, "Hello." Sala looked up at her, stuttering a little, "Hello." The elder looked at her, eyes tracing her over, "What's your name, little one?" The cub slowly started to become less frightened, hearing the warmth in the other lioness' voice, "I'm Sala." The older lioness smiled, "That is a pretty name." She looked up at Vitani, "Is she yours?" The young lioness blushed, "No." Nala blinked, "She looks so much like you. I'm surprised she's not yours." Sala looked up at the matriarch with a wide grin, "She's my momma now though." Vitani blushed warmly as Nala smiled, "I'm sure she is a wonderful mother, but why do you say that, child? Where are your real parents?" The cub turned her eyes away, "I don't have a real mommy or daddy anymore." The oldest lioness felt her ears fall flat on her head, "I'm sorry, but if you have no family, how did you get here?" The cub looked back at her with a warm smile, "I came here with my new daddy. He heard about this place when he was a cub, and thought we should come here." Nala blinked at her words, her mind racing, not sure if there were any other males that knew of this place. "What does your daddy look like," the matriarch asked, curious to know more. Sala smiled, "Well, he's bigger than me, gold and black fur with a white belly," She'd almost finished speaking when animals from all over the kingdom began to gather. Vitani looked around, "What's going on, Nala?" The elder female was confused, "I don't know," she replied, looking around her as they all gathered around Pride Rock. All of a sudden, a section of the grouping parted, and the Kings appeared. Simba walking proudly, while Kovu dragged something behind them.
