Chapter I

Saved

Dante sneezed, and shivered, he buried himself deeper into the blankets that he was wrapped in. He sneezed once more before closing his eyes tightly shut. His still premature mind didn't understand what was happening to him, he yearned for his mother's warmth as he began to cry, silently. The snow storm around him wailed it's melodious and cruel lamentation. His heart beat slowly began to slow, as the tip of his nose steadily began to freeze He breathed slower and slower, the eternal sleep began to gently wash over his mind.

A flash of light suddenly appeared a few feet away from Dante, accompanied by a sudden burst of black fire next to the flash. A young, beautiful lady stood in the spot where the light had came from, she wore white silk with simple but dazzling jewelry, her eyes sparkled with kindness as she looked around the snowy tundra. The cold didn't seem to affect her in the least, she gave off a soft, warm glow as her eyes fell on the small bundle of blankets. Beside her where the black flames had erupted stood a tall, dark, hooded man. He wore a cloak blacker than pitch, black mist emanated around him as a his evil form looked around, his eyes pure black under his hood as he grinned, revealing pure black teeth. He clutched at a dark wood staff as he said in a voice that would scare the devil himself,"Now you see Herema, why it is such a delight to mess with other clans, just look what they have done, abandoned and left to die, just like their proud kind. The Silver Wolves have remained powerful too long. And behold my daughter! I, the God of all darkness have become the first to not only make a demigod! But a direct mortal spawn of myself! The shadows grow strong my sweet, here is their warrior!" he cackled darkly. The other Goddess, Herema merely rolled her eyes,"Father, honestly of all the things to drag me out of my revery for you take me here? I was in the middle of providing light for weary travelers who had prayed to me! Who knows where they are now!" he frowned at him, as the figure merely grinned back. "Who would care for travelers, this is unprecedented! With this power darkness shall be able to destroy your petty light!"

The man strode over to the bundle, he knelled down next to it and examined the pup, noticing a small band around his paw he picked it up and read what it said. He grinned maliciously and said back to Herema,"Apparently they named him Dante, a fitting name I must say, he shall bring the literary inferno to life on Earth!" He studied the pup further taking in his wings and other features that weren't hidden by the blankets, he stood up and looked to Herema,"He'll make a fine spawnling indeed." he grinned, a grin so dark that it surpassed all things evil and sinful, to the point where it was pure malice. Herema looked at him, annoyed she said,"Yes, and as always father you care not for anything else, this is why we never get anywhere". The cloaked man ignored what she said before looking down at the pup once more, grinning, he muttered so only Dante heard his words, the words that would Dante's first, and one his darkest memories. "You were born into darkness, and of it, unlike most people you are different, set apart, the odd one out, your powers are great, for you control the innermost and most powerful Shadow Magic, you are a creation of darkness, and there you shall reside, bringing it with you where ever you go. You are the shadow that sees all, and conquers all. My bidding shall be done through you, little wolf." He stood up, grinned wickedly at Herema once, and vanished in a burst of dark fire.

Herema waited a few moments before walking over to Dante, she placed a hand on his small, small head, and warmth quickly spread through his tiny form. He breathing slowly returned to normal as he blinked up sleepily at the goddess, he yawned and the Goddess smiled at his cute actions, she said,"Take no notice of my father, you have Shadow Magic in you indeed, but that does not mean you are evil, Dante." she gently picked up up in his blankets, cradling him as she said,"You have been born with a kind heart Dante, that of a protector, and a lover, do not let darkness destroy that, it is a powerful force, but you must use it wisely. Do not forget my pup, you may not have the fur of a Silver Wolf, but you have the essence, and one of the strongest ones at that. You will face many hardships in your life, but you will always persevere, remember, you are blessed by me, the Goddess of light. Whenever you cannot find your path call to me to help light the way to it, and I shall come. I give you a Goddess's blessing, may your essence remain strong, and powers grow in greatness, so you may protect those who need it." A distant rumbling sound came as she spoke her last words as soft light shined on Dante, he closed his eyes as the magical spell took place, binding him with the blessing.

Herema smiled once more, she disappeared with yet another flash of brightness, taking Dante with her, she appeared in a dark forest, light rain beginning to fall as she set the bundle down in a nook inside of a nearby tree, she smiled down at the pup once more, she summoned a small, silver amulet, using some of Dante's essence to create it, she gently placed it beside the now fast asleep pup. Looking up at the sky she smiled, and let herself, slowly, fade away, as she returned to where she was needed. Dante continued to sleep, he felt warm and safe, something inside him knew that something had happened, something, that would change the course of the world. Yet he continued to sleep, as a distant hooting could be heard, an owl returning from an early evening hunt, only to discover a guest in it's home.
