Members of a racing crew send a challenge to a motorcycle racer, a racer who only recently has become known as a ghost rider. showing up only long enough to race and receive his winnings and leave again. will he show up to the challenge?

The Midnight Rider

"Yea right! I highly doubt there's any such thing!" said one male leaning on a black and red dodge charger. The male had black fur as well, a red stripe through his ear marking him as part of a local racing gang, one of the most well known. The Redliners. The male was canine in species and wore a white undershirt and jeans, a gold chain hanging around his neck, 2 tail rings wrapped around his tail also gold.

"Yea yea, I'm telling ya mike! He will be here. I heard it from a reliable sor-" said a female fur with the same red stripe on her ear, her word being cut off by the male, who was lazily swatting his paw at her slightly annoyed.

She was also canine, a golden coat of fur making her seem to glow in the dark night light of the city streets. She wore a pair of jeans and a black top, all glittery, shining brighter than a disco ball.

The area they were in was a long stretch of road, broken and crumbling sidewalks and asphalt, street lamps that have been dead for years and old factory buildings bordered up and colored with age and graffiti.

"If he shows I will give you a weeks supply of cow bones!" he said.

She smirked and nodded, agreeing to the deal, her tail wagging behind her. She continued to wash her car with a dust rag as she wasn't able to before leaving an hour and a half ago, a silver GT, taking much care to get it perfect.

The person they had been conversing about, the Midnight Rider, a fur who mysteriously shows up on a black crouch rocket challenging racers, winning, and just as soon as he shows up hes gone, like a shadow in the light of the moon.

"Come on cheeka, things don't just happen like that. That rider is as real as Santa paws girl!" came another voice, a feline fur with spots covering her yellow fur. She wore leather pants and jacket the red strip showing on her furry ear as well.

"It's almost midnight and hes still not here J." Mike says getting impatient.

" Almost, not past. Just wait, he will show" she said, the worried tone snaking out of her muzzle as she spoke.

J, the golden canine, had spent hours and even days tracking the Midnight Rider down, just to get a message to him to show up on Star Ave on the south end of town. She never saw him, but the bartender at the bar he frequented said he would pass it on for her. At least, that's what she told the others.

She turned to Alex, the feline, and motioned her to come over.

"Whats up dog?" she asked J, a smile playing her lips.

"That may have been funny the first time but not any more cat!" she growled keeping her voice low.

"Yea yea what ever shiny. whats up? Something wrong girl?" she asked waving off the threatening growl as if it was nothing, her head tilting out of curiosity.

"I'm a little worried. He hasn't shown up yet." she said, forgetting about the nickname Alex always used for her just as fast.

"He's pretty famous around here, you gotta keep that in mind too girl." she said, trying to cheer her up.

J only shrugged and sighed as she heard the booming of the town clock closest to them striking down the 12 ding dongs to midnight.

"Well what do ya know. He hasn't shown up and this was a waste of my time after all!" Mike said moving to stretch his legs a bit before getting into his car. That's when they heard it. It was the roar of a lion in a fight, the deafening sound of a large waterfall. They saw the black motorcycle racing down the middle of the roadway towards them. Braking slowly as he approached. He wore the same out fit as when J had seen him last, and every time since. Pitch black pants, and leather jacket, and a black helmet outlining his muzzle and ears. She couldn't help but to smile, her golden tail wagging behind her.

Turning to Mike who's jaw had dropped upon seeing the rider " Told ya, I will expect the bones starting tomorrow" she said walking up to the Midnight rider and his bike as he turned it off stepping off his ride.

"Thanks for coming, glad you got my message." she said tail still wagging. He only nodded, the black helmet and faceplate covering his features entirely.

"What, you don't talk puppy?" mike says regaining his composure, walking smugly over as well.

"Wait I'm confused.." Alex states bluntly. "Does this mean there is a Santa paws then?" she says tilting her head to one side standing beside J.

The Midnight rider just stares and nods a yes after an awkward moment, turning his head back to mike, pulling a paper out of his pocket. It was a pink slip.

"What, you think that little toy of yours can beat my ride?" mike says, again getting no answer from the stranger. He sighed pulling out a slip as well.

It was customary to keep a slip at all times . When a pink slip is put on the table, your racing for rides, you lose, and you lose your ride home. As you can tell, stakes were high.

"Alright then puppy, ill play for pinks." he says handing his paper to J.

The black rider grabed Mikes wrist before he could pas the paper. Mike, startled, looks at the Midnight Rider and gulps for a moment. The Black rider shaking his head no, and jumps on his bike starting it up, revving the motor a few times.

"Your insane pup ill give yo that, looks like ill have a new ride tonight." he said taking his slip, putting it back in his pocket and walking briskly back to his car. J followed him the smile never leaver her face.

"You think you can win? This guy has wiped out a lot of racers Mike, you shouldn't take him lightly." J said a little worried about him.

"Yea, I can do this. No way he will beat me." he says slamming his door closed and bringing the Charger to life. Mike smiled " purr baby purr" he muttered to himself revving up a few times before moving to a starting line that had been drawn up when they arrived.

Alex got between the 2 vehicles, a black flag with a red stripe down the center going vertically in her paws.

She points to the Midnight Rider who revs his engine one long time in response. Alex points to Mike who does the same thing, looking over at the Midnight rider, a smug look on his face before looking ahead of him, the road way in view, the moon high above, it was a great night for a race that would put him at the top.

"The race is a one lap circuit going from here, three blocks by three blocks with left hand turns, finely lap right, racers! On your mark! Get set!" Alex turned to both of them and threw the flag down yelling out "go!" and they took off.

Alex giggled a little" Yo dog! Look at them go!" she smiled, tail swaying contently.

J just growled and looked back to the racers, hoping the Midnight Rider wouldn't smoke Mike to badly.

Mike had music blaring, the engine roaring, and the Midnight Rider in his rear view mirror, and about to be the owner of the Midnight Rider's bike. 'Guess it wasn't a waste of time after all' Mike thought to himself. The broken down city scape flashing past him as he zoomed on at over 90 miles an hour.

But as they came to the first corner, Mike found himself having to slow down or spin out of control, the Midnight Rider came soaring around him with ease, as he accelerated into the turn.

Before mike could blink, he was behind the Midnight Rider and growling as he stepped his foot onto the gas gaining speed now, trying to pass up the Rider for all he was worth.

"Oh come on!" Mike yelled out switching gears swiftly and masterfully. But it didn't seem to matter, the Midnight Rider seemed to always be in just the right spot to stay ahead until the last corner.

"Hah! I got you now pup!" he yells out, now neck and neck with him.

The Midnight rider looked over for a moment before turning back to the last stretch of road lifting his left paw and waving bye bye as he pressed a red button on his handle bars which activated a nitrous boost, catapulting him to the front and within moments, the finish line. Alex could only stand with her mouth agape at what she had just seen, J just smiling, as if knowing it would happen. Mike was beaten by the Midnight rider. Mike slowed and soon stopped his car, head laying on the steering wheel as he shut down the Charger, an monotonous red light filling the cab. Alex ran over to Mike who just opened the window of the car and looked out. When Alex looked in at him his shoulders were heaving.

"Awe, Mike don't cry, you can challenge him again some other time." she said trying to comfort him.

he lifted his head, and just started laughing louder.

" Um.. Mike.. You lost, why are you laughing dude?" Alex asked finding his behavior perplexing and confusing.

"That was the coolest race ever, finely someone who can beat me. That was great!" he commented opening the door of the car and stepping out.

" Yo pup! Nice moves, where-" Mike began but stopped. The Midnight Rider was gone. But upon another look, so was J.

Alex and Mike both looked at each other.

"You don't think she-" Mike began.

"No. she couldn't have." Alex said

"But that would also have to mean.." Mike began again. Alex walked over looking inside the GT and smiled glad to see the keys of the GT still in the glove box of the car.

"Hey Alex, whats this?" Mike asked picking up a business card. He read what it said and began to Laugh hysterically.

"Whats so funny?" Alex asks taking the card from him.

"The fast and the Furrious" she Read out loud and couldn't help but to laugh as well. "Call for a rematch?" she said after calming down a bit.

"Maybe next time pup. Ill get ya" Mike says as he and Alex get into the vehicles and drove home, the one single race the only thing on there minds, Specificity, The Midnight Rider.
