The Webb clan chapter 1

________________________________________________________

-this is a brand new story I decided to write, and as such, I don't expect many people to read it at first.

-the father's name is cole. The son's name is Turok.

________________________________________________________

My name is Cole, and I'm one of the last of the webb clan. Hundreds of years ago, we were rulers, we were numerous, and we were powerful. But a group of people obsessed with their own greed, killed out king. After that we fell apart. One of our greatest advantages, our numbers, had been turned on us, as the clan fell apart, brother fought brother, father fought son, mother against child. It was chaos.

Eventually we managed to stop the battle, but once we had finally came together again, a rival clan attacked us. We had already gone from thousands, to hundreds. We were all but destroyed by them, and then there were ten. We managed to survive till now, but we were always hunted by the other clans. But a year ago, they killed my wife, the last female member of the clan. Now the only way to continue our lineage is for either me or my son to marry someone.

Now that you know how this all happened, I should get back to the present. Me and my son are walking through the mountains, trying to avoid being caught. Due to us being the last of our clan, plus the powers of our bloodline, we have huge bounties on our heads. But we're on our way to one of the assassins guild's last bases. Without the Webb clan to sustain us, the assassins membership plummeted.

"How much longer until we get there" my son asked. He hasn't become one of us yet. His induction exam is the reason we're going.

"Not far now" I told him

Because of our inability to defend ourselves against an attack, we try to remain in hiding. Eventually we reached the cave that serves as the entrance. There was an iron door that blocked off the mouth of the cave. I tapped the proper sequence on the door, then a slot opened and a pair of eyes looked us over.

"Password?" The person behind the door asked. I whispered the password to it, and they opened the door. We were led down a long corridor, into a massive cavern. Inside the cavern were a small number of houses and businesses, mostly just assassins gathered to trade their things they picked up on their journeys.

"This place is huge" turok gawked, looking over everything with amazed focus.

"This way" the escort said, leading us through a different tunnel. After going down for a few minutes until we reached the arena. There were about fifty people in the stands, waiting to see the show. We were led to the armory where we would equip my son, be it with sword, knives, spears, etc.

"You may take your pick of any weapon on this rack" our guide pointed to a small rack of weapons. My son grabbed a scythe off the rack and swung it experimentally.

"I don't know about that Turok. Scythes have always been bad luck in our clan" I said. Our very first king, killed himself when he tried to use a scythe. My grandfather accidentally slashed my grandmothers back, the wound became infected and she died. Along with many other examples. All throughout our history, scythes have been nothing but trouble.

"I like its balance." He protested. Sometimes I don't understand him. Eventually he was led out to the center of the arena, then after I had been moved to the stands, they released the lion, classic colosseum style. Styx jumped over the on rushing beast, then he turned around and slashed the lion. It didnt die, but now it was pissed off.

After a few more repeats of this, he placed the scythe's blade through the lion's skull. The first challenge was over, but there was many more to go. He was given half an hour to rest before the next trial, I urged him to abandon the scythe, but he wouldn't budge. Eventually it came time for the next challenge to begin. He was led to a different arena, this one much smaller than the previous.

"The second trial will now begin" the proctor announced. All of a sudden, giant scorpions emerged from the sand. One flicked its tail forward at lightning speed. Any normal person would have been killed, but Turok had been training his whole life for this. He rolled out of the stingers path and came up in a crouch. A second scorpion tried to jab him, but he jumped over the tail and landed on the scorpions back.

"You're not too smart are you?" He insulted the beast before putting his boot through its skull. He evaded a few more jabs and from the other two scorpions. Swung his weapon and decapitated the other scorpion. He tried to pull his weapon out of the ground, but it was stuck fast, I had warned him about the scythe. The last scorpion jabbed at him again, but Turok moved too late and the stinger scraped his arm. The poison in those giant scorpions is enough to take down a giant rhinophant. He crumpled over for a second and my heart filled with dread, I can't lose another of the clan, then it would be just me.

"Get up dammit!" I shouted at him. He looked me in the eyes for a second and stood back up. He ripped the scythe out of the ground and right before the scorpion could move, he threw his weapon and it split the bastard down the middle. For a second the scythe appeared to glow, but I must have been seeing things. He wouldn't gain that kind of ability for a few years... But I developed my powers at an earlier age than I was supposed to, maybe he could as well?

He was led to the armory again, and he collapsed onto the floor. I applied some salve that I had concocted onto the wound, it should stop the poison spreading. He was given an entire hour before the final test, as is customary. I looked over the scythe, it was in fine condition, minus the scorpion blood. I cleaned it up, and Turok spent most of his time sharpening its blade. I wasn't sure he could beat the final test with his arm useless the way it was, but we couldn't back out of the trials.

--turok's point of view

The pain in my arm was killing me, and I couldn't move it at all. I could still wield my scythe, but not very well. Eventually they led me back to the first arena, this one was dirt instead of the sand from the previous one. I stood at the ready as a man walked out into the arena. He pulled his sword off his back and rushed at me. I dodged to the side of his swing, but he was fast and swung my way again, this time the sword left a gasp down the side of the arm that was already wounded.

"Dammit, not again" I muttered, but then I saw a green liquid ooze out of the wound. This guy had just given the poison an escape route. Feeling rushed back into my arm, and I stood back up, now it begins. I attacked him a few times, but he blocked and deflected every blow I threw at him.we went at it for a while, until he disarmed me. he flung my weapon off to the other side of the arena, leaving me defenseless.

He ran at me over and over, but I got the feeling that he wasn't trying to kill me, and I also got the feeling that If he tried, I'd be dead. I was suddenly filled with the desire to run away as fast as i could. So this was the sense of power that the assassins seemed to radiate? I darted to the other side of the arena and tried to grab my scythe, but he was there first. He hit me on the head with the but of his sword, and I fell on my back.

"Get away from me" I shouted at him, fear coursing through me.

"GET AWAY!" I screamed. Suddenly, power coursed through my lungs, they felt like they were on fire. I shouted at him again, and this time, I spit fire. Fire poured from my lungs, and I had no idea how it had happened. But then I recalled something father had told me.

"The Webb clan used to possess unimaginable power, someday, you will possess that power as well." He had said to me, was this what h had meant?

The man in front of me's eyes widened when he saw the flames, but he didn't have time to react, the fire consumed him.

--Cole's point of view

Turok shouted for the man to get away from him, then his chest seemed to suck the air out of the area, then he breathed fire. The crowd gasped, and then they all looked at me, the man who had brought this kid here. Suddenly, realization appeared to dawn on them that we were from the Webb clan. Nervous murmurs went through the crowd, another group of people that feared or powers, nothing new.

"This test is over, Turok has passed the induction exam" the proctor said, they pulled the man away to the infirmary, and Turok walked over to me.

"How did I do that?" He asked, apprehension creeping into his voice.

"That is what makes the Webb clan so powerful, we have the ability to do amazing things. things that take others years to learn, we can learn with little to no effort." I told him. I doubted he would understand the significance of our powers just yet, but we had time.
