Chapter 1

One would expect a great deal of activity on a warm summer evening, but the dense forest surrounding the mouth of the long forgotten cave was eerily silent. It seemed as though a blanket had been draped over the world, effectively silencing everything. Theseus sat quietly in the shadows, chanting a spell under his breath that would keep him concealed from any and all prying eyes.

Incantation complete, Theseus waited for a while longer until he was satisfied that he was alone. Shaking his pursuers had taken longer than he expected, but in the end it would all be worth it. He rose from his hiding place and covered the distance between him and the cave in a matter of seconds, hugging close to the rough, stone wall before glancing discreetly back into the dark forest.

Theseus let out a pent-up breath and smiled as he ran a paw through his head fur before he walked farther into the inky, black depths. Soon it was too dark for even his keen, canine eyes to see. He made a move to remove a torch from his pack, but he thought better of it. Instead he muttered another short spell and was rewarded with a burst of light. After a moment the cave walls came into pristine focus, albeit with a slightly green hue.

"I knew that was going to be helpful eventually." He mumbled to himself as he walked. Theseus kept a close eye out for anything unusual in his path, but his constant vigil didn't help as much as he would have liked, because he was immediately set upon by a storm of arrows that launched themselves from the walls.

Theseus heard it coming before he saw it, so he dropped to the hard floor and tried to make himself as small a target as possible as broken pieces of arrow rained down upon his head. After what seemed like an eternity, the hail of arrows ceased. He looked around cautiously, spying a broken tripwire among the mass of broken arrows. Theseus gave a low growl and stood, brushing splinters from the broken arrows out of his fur and clothes.

Huh, so much for constant vigil. He thought somberly. Theseus clapped his paws together suddenly, allowing a goofy smile to surface on his face. "But no matter, I will not be deterred so easily!" He said with a mock flourish, "I will prevail!" A single bold step forward caused the floor to shift suddenly, plunging Theseus into the dark chasm that suddenly yawned before him.
