#1 of Evolution

The start of my newest series, one that came to me while playing Flexible Survival. This has nothing to do with "First Time", "BITN" or anything else related to those to series. This is a completely new and separate story, one that I want to have a little more serious and darker tone to it.

Flexible Survival, its ideas, places and themes are properties of their respective owners/creators. I stake no claim to them.

I DO however, claim the right to my characters and such.

No warning.....that's what I'll remember most about E-Day.

It began like any other day on campus. Professors droning on in class....cafeteria food at lunch....familiar faces in the hallways. Nobody had any clue how things were about to change. We were sitting in biology class when the power went out. On an island like Seascape is wasn't an uncommon thing, especially with all the modern tech that kept appearing from the corporations on the island, and the military base with their exercises. We thought it was no big deal, just another random blackout.

Then....that's when the sirens started.

_Not police sirens or fire trucks, no. The big air raid sirens left over from the war. The kind of siren that anyone would hear and freeze in their tracks, knowing something was really wrong. Everyone started looking around and getting out of their seats, wondering what to do, and Professor Reston managed to calm us down, saying we should head to the basement cellar. There was an old bomb shelter down there we could take cover in. Maybe it was just some kind of drill. We all believed her. Until the screams began. _

_Screams. Roars. The sounds of violence and destruction outside on campus. That sent everyone running for the basement without another word, each and every one of us knowing this was no drill or exercise. Reston was hurrying us along as best she could, her motherly instincts kicking in as she tried to protect her students from whatever was happening. You could see it in her face though. She was just as terrified as anyone else. _

_We almost made it to the basement when the attacks reached us. Doors splintered off their hinges, and sturdy cement and brick walls crumbled like cards as the beasts broke into the college halls. They came from everywhere. People were grabbed left and right by various creatures. Some where mauled outright. Some.....probably wish they had been mauled. How me and the others made it to the bomb shelter door, I don't know. Maybe we were lucky. Maybe it was Fate's way of toying with us. _

Reston almost made it. She was right behind us as we got to the door, when a cabinet fell on her, pinning her to the floor. Nate and I tried to go back for her, but she screamed at us to save ourselves. We could hear the sounds of creatures getting closer, and she pleaded for us to run. Leaving her behind was against everything I ever believed in. I can still hear the echo of her screams from behind the steel door as we sealed it.

That was all seven days ago.

We've been hiding in here, the four of us, since that day. Our provisions have run low, and we know we are out of options. The little bunker was pretty well stocked to begin with, but after a week and housing four guys....things have changed. We'll starve to death if we don't head out in search of more food and water. Brandon thinks we should just stay and wait for a rescue, but the others and I doubt there will be one. We haven't heard sounds outside the door for two full days now, so we're going to take our chances. Maybe there are others out there in the city that survived like us. Maybe we can find a way to get to the mainland. Maybe.....maybe this is all just a bad dream.

Riku and Nate are ready to pop the seal on the door, and our bags are packed. Wish us luck....
