Violet Eyes

"Ryan!" a voice called out.

"Huh?" Ryan asked snapping out of his thoughts. He'd been thinking about various things: his life, his dreams, his ambitions. He often thought about these things about 5 times a day. He didn't really have too much freetime to himself, so he often spent his time on the fields just staring out into space. As he began to ramble about his life until...

"For gods's sake Ryan! You got to- You're doing it AGAIN!" the man screamed. The man in question was Bulgier, Ryan's adopted father. Before Ryan could even open his eyes, his mother and father were killed in an ambush by Salamier, a neighboring kingdom who, coincidentally, was at war with his homeland, Veirene.

Salamier was ruled by a nut-case named Joshua, an insane old man who thought he was the prophet. Although he was insane, he had one hell of an army. Since he deemed all other kingdoms 'unclean' or 'sinful', he was using the army to wipe away the bad. Right now, Xavior, the king of Veirene, was forming a rebellion with neighboring kingdoms to stop the mad men.

And so Ryan was given to Bulgier, his mother's brother. He was an... unpleasent man. More of a drunken, abbusive, selfish hog of person, but I digress. Ryan thought while Bulgier continued his weekly rant. "-make the crops taste terrible! That's it. You're sleeping outside for the next month!"

Ryan was rather surprised by Bulgier's words. Sure, he'd made him sleep outside before, but never a month. A month! before Ryan could create a witty remark about Bulgier's brutish intelligence, he found himself on the front step of his hut. What was he going to do? He didn't have a place to stay. He was liked around the village, but he really couldn't ask to stay with them.

No one in Cesiant, his town, could have him. Not many had the space and he knew no one could afford to have him.

Although Cesiant was one of the poorest towns in Veirene, it was definitely one the friendliest. The people always gave him a wave or a hello. Everyone knew each other and most were friends.

It was very unlike the cities. Bulgier had sent him for beer a couple times to the Capital and what he saw he didn't like. Everyone was going from Point A to Point B, always hustle and bustle. It was really big too. He swore, it could hold like... 2,000 people! (not at the time realizing it's population was 50,000) He asked somebody to help him directions to the pub, but they passed right by him! Not even a hello or wave!

Wanting to get his mind of the topic, he headed out the forest. The place was the hotspot for stories about 'The Great Hero'. About 100 years ago this one guy who came to this town through his harrowing chase of a dragon and managed to track it down in this forest and kill it. He brought the beast's skull and the town of course gave the little they had and hailed him as the hero that he was!

...Though they didn't know he didn't actually kill the dragon. Although it did come to his town, he didn't kill it. He simpily used a horse skull and tricked the 'foolish' town into giving him all they had. The Hero's tale spread to the King himself, who gave him manor to live on. He spent his days out laughing at the foolishness of the world.

Ryan began to think about how he was going survive. Okay, i'll make camp by the river, then i'll catch some squirrels- Ryan continued his plans, stepping on pinecones and looking around the vegetation for tasty squirrel meat.

"Aha! i see you!" Ryan yelled as he dashed for a plump squirrel chewing on a nut. He continued his chase before watching it run up a tree. "Dangit!" Ryan yelled while he punched a tree out of frustration "AHH!" Ryan began holding his hand close, blowing to get the pain out.

He continued on his trail. Soon he found himself at an lake he'd never seen before. It had crystal blue water that reflected the setting sun. On a hill to the left, a large mouth of a cave sat, digging deep into a mountain.

He didn't want to sleep in their in fear of whatever made it's home in it ripping him to shreds. Of course, it would supply him shelter...

He didn't want to die...but... it might be comfy...

He kept bantering with himself, not sure which to option to take... All the while a pair or violet eyes watched him from the treeline...

..................

Irine was watching this human intensly. Why did he keep looking at her cave? Oh gods! What if he was sent to kill her! What if the humans near that town had seen her? Ohhhhh! Mom and Dad would KILL her! They'd be forced to move from their first real home all because of her!

Wait... maybe if she killed him! Ya! But Mom and Dad told her that they never killed any humans... But then again they said all humans are evil... Would this be right?

She'd heard stories of the evil human who kidnapped the dragoness then the hero dragon slayed him and they lived happily ever after- but what if this human wasn't evil?

Okay... Okay... First then she'd do... She'd approach the human, if he unsheathed his sword or run away... then she would kill him. Okay, no pressure. Oh gods, she was shaking. Okay, here it goes...

............................

Soon Ryan's train of thought was cut short as a giant dragon appeared right in front of him. He didn't move. He didn't flinch. He didn't make a sound. His heart was beating a mile a minute. It was the dragon! So the hero didn't kill it!

What if it ate him? What if it ripped him to shreds? What if...

Then he fainted

Well, That was... easy. Now at least he wouldn't run away. But what would she do with him? She could... Kill him. But she didn't want to rip him to shreds. She didn't like... blood. Plus it would lead a trail, a search party would be formed and she and her family would be found and forced to move (or killed, gods forbidden). She could just let him go, maybe he'd just think it was a dream. She couldn't take that risk.

Okay she'd take him back to the cave, then she'd decide what to do with him. With that she flung the human over her shoulder and brought him back to the cave.

...................

Ryan's eyes quickly opened to a gray, moss covered wall. He began to think back to the how-ever-long-it's-been's events. First he was yelled at by Sir Eats Alot. Then he was kicked out, Then he tried to get squirrel meat... Then...

The Dragon! He was attacked a dragon! What if the dragon was going to eat him? To make him into Ryan soup! Or maybe he'd be turned into a slave. Honestly, he prefered the latter.

"You're awake." A voice said to him. Looking towards the mysterious voice, he found the speaker: It was the dragon! She (or so he thought she was a she...) had shiny turquoise scales and the most lovely violet eyes...

"Uh, Yeah..." Ryan was shaking violently at this point. She found it cute that the human was shaking.

"So uh... What are you going to do with me?" Ryan asked, calming a little

"Well, that's what i'm trying to figure out"'

"Well, maybe while you figure it out, we could chat." Ryan said

"Sure, i'd like to have our first meeting to be less 'fainting-at-the-sight-of-me'-ish" She said with a giggle.

"Well, i'm Ryan"

"Irine"

"Irine... lovely name" Ryan said with a smirk.

"Oh, uh, thanks" Irine said, blushing. Blushing? Why was she blushing? He was a human! A hairless monkey with an evil, pea-sized brain! All humans were evil! ..But at least he wasn't as bad as the other human's she'd seen...

"So why were you around my lake?" Irine asked. She'd been around lake since she was born and knew every last inch of it. She'd swam in it regularly, as well as bathed.

"Oh uh my stepfather kicked me out for a week..." Ryan said.

"Oh gods, i'm so sorry! I'm sorry for scaring you!" Irine yelled as she hugged Ryan fiercely. "It's okay. Plus if i didn't get kicked out, I wouldn't have met you." He said, patting her on the back. While he did so, the gears in her head began to spin.

"Ryan! I have an idea! What if- for the next week- you stay here with me! My mom and dad will take some time, but i'm sure they'll let you!" Irine screamed. This was the perfect way to pay him back for scaring him! Plus, maybe they could be friends! She had no friends besides her relatives or her parents friends, so maybe they'd could be!

"Irine, i couldn't take advantage of that, i'll just sleep by the lake-" Ryan replied. "Ryan, i wouldn't be a good friend if i did that! You cannot do that, i won't let you" Irine said with a mock-serious tone.

Ryan was defeated. He knew she was joking, but he wanted to play along. "Okay, okay if you're forcing me..." Ryan said barely able to get them out before Irine tackled him into a hug. "Oh yay! yay! I knew you'd say yes!" She yelled, buring her head in his neck.

The two talked for hours about their lives, hopes and dreams. Ryan wanted to be a knight while Irine wanted to have a mate and children. Soon both their stomaches grumbled and Irine and Ryan went out to go get some food.

"So what are we looking for?"

"Deer, Buck, Pig..."

Ryan never really ate meat. His town was a farming town, so very few people had livestock. He'd had meat before, but it was just easier to grow crops or buy food instead of hunting.

Soon Irine had just frozen. "Irine?" She just looked out to a clearing. There, a family of Deer were grazing. Before Ryan could blink, Irine took off to the field. She clawed into (What Ryan could assume was) the father, but let the other three go. She clawed into the deer, exposing the insides. Ryan quickly caught up to her.

"Hey, So... Is this our...dinner?" Ryan said, panting

"Ya! dig in!" Irine said cheerily.

"Uh... ya..." Ryan said akwardly. "What?" Ryan began to explain the whole 'what humans can eat' to Irine, who really wasn't getting it. "So, how are you going to eat?" Ryan thought for a second before coming up with the answer.

"Well you could just 'breathe fire' right?"

"Well, yes, but it's going to take alot out of me, so we'll do it at the cave so i don't just fall."

Soon the two were back at the cave and soon enough, Ryan was eating some nice cooked deer. "How's the food?" Irine asked, bored from the lack of talking. Ryan  looked up and just gave a happy 'Emph' and then went backing to stuffing his face.

"Great, just great" Irine said, looking off to the cave's entrance. "Irine! we're back!" a voice bellowed as two large dragons landed at the cave. "Crap!" Irine whisper-yelled to Ryan before running off to greet her parents.

"Mom! Dad! I, uh, didn't expect you guys to be home so early!" She sad fastly, giving both parents a quick hug.

"Yes well, the elder's are getting quite irritated"  Clint was a large dragon, the firstborn of his family. Green scales and piercing red eyes. "Oh they were very upset over the 'thing'." Victoria was a small dragon, barely bigger than Irine herself. She had bright purple eyes, and ruby scales.

The thing that the elder's were upset about was Irine. She was 30, a proper time for a dragon to claim a 'mate'. Mates were much like marriage for humans, but becoming so didn't require a ceremony. Right now, Irine didn't have one. Since Clint was the most powerful dragon of his clan, he was pressured to have a son who would be a great warrior. He had a daughter, Irine. Now, since he told the elder's he and Victoria only wanted one child, they were pressured for Irine to take a mate and have children.

Irine didn't like this. She had plenty of suitors, being the daughter of the clan's most powerful member. Irine (and her parents) didn't like any of them. They were either too stupid or too shallow or too powerhungry. Still, she wanted to be like those girls in the fairy-tales: swept away by the handsom prince who likes her for her mind.

Ya right, like that going to happen... Irine thought before being snapped out of it by the thought of her current predicament. "Uh mom, dad, i have something to tell you..." Irine said, looking down

"What is it dear? Victoria asked

"Well... Its, uh, better to just.. show you... Come on out Ryan..." Irine told him, gestering his hands. Ryan, who had being hiding behind a rock, was shaking, moreso then his second encounter with Irine. Her parents were GIANT! Her father alone was about 3x Irine!

Still, he summoned all the courage he had and stepped out. Then he promptly fainted.

"Irine, is that a- is that a-" Her mother asked shockingly

"Human!" Clint bellowed "Irine, what is a human doing here! We've told you to never reveal our hideout to any human's EVER!"

"Father listen! He was kicked out of his home by his father!"

"That's probably some petty lie he said to get some sympathy" Her mother scoffed

"...And we can be friends and he's given me an a lot of information about humans!" Irine said, ignoring her mother's harsh words

The three continued to argue. Clint wanted to just kill him while his mother just wanted to throw him out into the wilderness. Irine got an idea

"Listen, why don't I just wake him up and see what you think of him?" Her mother nodded while Clint gave a puff of fire with his snout. She began shaking him gently. Soon the boy stirred and awoke.

"Huh?"

"Uh, Ryan... These are my parents."  She gestured to them. When Ryan saw them, he gave a yelp. The two approached him, Clint putting a wing over his mate.

"H-hi..." Ryan said nervously. "Silence human." Clint said.

The two began to get his scent. "Uh, what are you... doing?"

"We're registering your scent so we don't accidentally step on you...." Victoria said calmly

"Uh... Okay."

After they finished, Clint began to speak to Ryan.

"You may stay with us for a while, but know this human" He said the word bitterly "If you even think of harming a single scale on my daughter, i will squash you like a tiny bug." Clint bellowed before heading off. Ryan couldn't even stammer an 'okay'.

"They like you!" Irine yelled, tackling him.

"That's being liked?"

"Well they always hated any males who came near me. Then again, they were always just suitors..."

"Suitors?"

"Yeah! These guys from other clans come and try to become my mate." She explained.

"Oh... have you... gotten this mate?" He asked. He assumed it was much like spouses in the human world.

"No... I don't like any of them..."

"Well... I bet you'll find your prince charming eventually!"

"Uh... Yeah.. One day..."

The two then decided it was time for sleep. Irine layed in her 'bed', just a pile of moss, and Ryan snuggled up with her. The two quickly fell asleep, enjoying each other's company.

....................

"Ryan..." He swear he heard that voice before... "Ryan w-" He definitely heard it "WAKE UP!" the voice yelled. Soon he was greeted with two large violet eyes. "I'm up, i'm up.." He mumbled.

Right now it was the 5th day of his living with her. They were bestfriends now and loved each others comapny. Her parents showed progress: They began to use a brighter tone with the word human.

The two got ready and headed for the lake. They both had a nice swim and bath. During the washing, Irine had seen his 'member'. She was... embarrased, to say the least. Her mom and dad had educated her on the dragon reproductive system, and that she should never do so unless she had a suitable mate. When she asked what makes someone a good mate, they said they'd be nice and someone who was special to her. Well... Ryan was nice, defiantly. But was he someone special to her? Well he is her first and only friend, so.... ya he was. But did that make him a suitable mate? She'd have to think about it...

Meanwhile, Ryan was in his own thoughts. He was thinking... about Irine. How great she was. Her sweet as honey smile. Her laugh. Her violet eyes. Why was he thinking about her? What did this mean? Was he... attracted to her? No, preposterous! In love... With a dragon? Even if he did- which he didn't- would she even accept him? She would just laugh in his face and burn him to a crisp...

The two headed back to the cave, both a large distance away from each other. The return was... awkward. They wouldn't make any eye-contact and were silent the whole trip.

Once they were in the cave, they headed to her bed. They chatted for an hour, all the while Irine and Ryan kept thinking about a looming question: What would become of Irine and Ryan's relationship?

They both totally didn't know. If they were together, what would happen to their children? Furthermore, how would their relationship be recieved? Even as they talked and joked, it left neither of their mind.

Right now, Irine was in her bed busy thinking over one of the most important topic of her life... her mate

Maybe I should just tell him i'm attracted- no! that'll make me seem like i just... like him a little... maybe I should tell him i love him?- no again! I don't want to come on too strong... What if doesn't like me? What if he runs back to his village and sends a party to kill me. Even though she imagined her bloody death, she still thought about Ryan... His goofy smile, his warm, tiny little human body.

By the lake, Ryan was thinking over a similar topic.

What if she hates me? I mean, how could a beautiful goddess of a dragon like that love a lowly farmer peasent like me. She was so beautiful... Her shiny turquoise scales in the moonlight... Her violet, soul piercing eyes.... Oh he was like dirt to diamonds compared to her...

Maybe i'm being too negative... No... Okay. I'll just tell her tonight.

Soon the two met up with each other at the lake. They just sat there looking as the moon's glow reflected off the lake.

"Beautiful isn't it?" Irine said.

Just like you... he thought, catching himself before saying it. "I always came here alone, just admiring the view"

"Irine?"

"Ya Ryan?"

"I... Have something important to tell you..." Ryan said, blushing beet red and looking down. He then looked into those violet eyes and all his fears just faded away.

"You can tell me anything" Simple but sweet.

"I.. I uh- I l- I" Ryan couldn't even get the words out

"Ryan, I have something to tell you too... so i think it would be easier if we both say what we have to say at the same time

"O-Okay"

"Okay, count down with me" Even Irine was surprised she was keeping a cool head.

"3... 2... 1..."

"I love you!" They both said in that wonderful, cliche way

Irine began to cry tears of joy: He loved her! The greastest, sweetest guy in the world loved HER! Of course it didn't take long for her to tackle him, giving him loads of kisses.

He returned the kisses, not managing to match her number and speed. After that they... 'did the deed'. They cuddled the night away, not saying anything.

"Irine?"

"Yes dear?"

"Uh... now that we've 'mated' what are our children going to be like? Are we even compatible? Plus, you'll outlive me."

"I...  I really don't know. But i'm sure we'll find a way."

"Whatever happens, i'm just glad i met you."

"Me too..."

"Honey?"

"Yes Ryan?"

Ryan paused for a second "I love you"

"I love you too" The two just embraced each other, snuggling until morn.

The End
