Chapter 8: Vanishing act

Trick and Reist huddled in an ally, waiting on the sandstorm to end. They passed the time by talking about their escape plan.

"Ok, so the circus. What's our story?" Reist asked

"You have performing skills?" trick asked; his Canine was getting a lot better now that he was using it more and more. He was referring to the book a lot less

"Not really. I mean, I pretty good with a bow but that's it. And my bow is lost."

"How good?" Trick asked

"Pretty damn good?"

"We can turn that into our act." Trick said. "We'll just steal a bow."

"I don't want to break the law...." Reist mumbled

"We stole a car, and we're fugitive slaves. You already have." Trick pointed out. Reist didn't answer that.

"So we just walk in and say we have an act?" Reist asked

"I guess." Trick said shrugging. That seemed easy enough Reist thought.

Rorick

The grey wolf was stuck in the Airport until the sandstorm ended. He busied himself by sniffing around for the traitor. He had definitely been here, but not for a while. He sniffed his way to a bench. He had been at this bench for a while, along with a fox.

"Hey you." Said someone from behind him. Rorick turned, there was a bronze horse coming towards him. "What are you sniffing for?"

"None of your business." Rorick said sharply

"It wouldn't happen to be a traitorous wolf?" Brute asked smirking. His boss had called an informed him of Rorick's visit. The Grey wolf glared and nodded.

"They left here. I'm waiting to see if they come back, but I doubt they will." Brute said. "How about we help each other. I want the fox, you can have the wolves."

"I don't need help." Rorick snarled out.

"I know my way around this city, you don't." Brute said calmly. Rorick snorted

"Fine. But stay out of my way."

Fen

Fen was waiting out the storm in a small motel. He sat on the bed trying not to despair. Reist was gone. He didn't want to give up but he had no idea where to look. His only solace was if he couldn't find the white wolf, neither could the slaver. Maybe my best choice is to go back to the tribe, and wait for Reist there. He's got to be running somewhere, that's the safest place. Even so, Fen was not happy with the idea of going back. Treesong had given him some money to get home with when they split up. She had said there was an airport near the Forest; from there he could walk to the tribe in about a day. He would head to the airport and then go home. He curled up on the bed. He felt empty inside. When the storm was finally over he got a taxi to the airport. The taxi driver tried to strike up conversation but Fen was not paying attention. Walking through the airport parking lot, he kept his head down and did not notice Rorick and Brute heading in his direction. Unfortunately for Fen, Rorick noticed him.

"Hey rising son of a bitch, you looking for something?" Rorick shouted. Fen looked up and scowled. The bastard must've escaped, there's no way Embereyes would've let him go. If Rorick was searching for Reist and was at the airport, then Reist must've been there. He was already heading home!

"No not really. Did you lose something?" Fen said smugly. He knew his Reist would make it home. Rorick snarled and stepped up

"Do you want to lose something? I'll tear you apart this time."

"Fuck off Rorick. I just want to get home."

"Yea you better leave." Rorick said. Fen rolled his eyes and walked by the grey wolf, heading inside.

"He's giving up?" Brute said, once the black was gone

"I guess. He probably ran out of ideas. Speaking of, do you have any?" the horse shook his head. The Two slaves had successfully vanished.

Reist and Trick

Reist tested the string on his new bow. It was a good bow, although he preferred his homemade one. He pulled out some arrows and tested a few shots, they all hit their mark.

"So what's our act?" he asked retrieving the arrows from the wall of the motel.

"Well you could just shoot things off of my head." Trick said

"What like apples?" Reist said "that's not all that amazing. Are you sure they'd let us in on that?"

"Use something smaller. Like.... A plum. Or you could put me on one of those spinning wheels." Trick offered up

"You sure trust my skill with this." Reist said amused

"It's our only choice. We may have shaken them off for now, but they'll find us soon. They're probably already checking motels for us." Trick said.

"Alright then. Let's steal some stuff to get us started." Reist said, still not comfortable with the idea of stealing, but dire situations called for dire actions.

They looked at the tent nervously. They had a new change of clothes, more casual than the Hyena's stolen clothes. They also had some props. They exchanged a look before entering the tent. Inside there was a lynx walking on a pile of glass. There was another Lynx next to her, he was standing back watching her, and then he noticed the Reist and trick walk in.

"Can I help you?" he said, taking in the bow and bag of props.

"Where can we go if for an audition? We want to join the circus." Reist said

"Oh. HEY JOSHUA" The lynx shouted over his shoulder. A very agitated Jackal came out from behind a pile of chairs.

"What?" he snapped

"These two want to join." The lynx said, taking the glass walkers hand as she stepped off the glass.

"Huh. Follow me." The Jackal said walking off. The two looked at each other again, before running after him. Once they were away from the practicing Lynxes. "What do you do?" he asked

"I shoot things" Reist said, feeling a little stupid.

"I see. You good at it?" the Jackal said. Reist nodded.

"Good showman?"

"I hope so." Reist said unsure.

"Quick test, take out your bow. What do you have in there?" he pointed to the bag Trick opened it to show him. He took out a kiwi. And waited while Reist readied an arrow. Without a warning the Jackal tossed the Kiwi up and Reist .loosed the arrow. It rained Kiwi juice on them when the arrow shot through the small fruit. "We'll try you out for a show. And see how it goes. You better do more than just shooting fruit in the air though." The two runaways nodded.

"We get practice time right?" Reist said

"Of course. Whenever you feel like it. Out first show is in a couple of days though so you better put something together fast."

"we don't' want to perform here." Reist said. "Maybe at the next location?" the jackal looked at him strangely

"Sure I guess." He said before walking away. The two looked at each other in surprise and happiness, before moving to look around the tent. This tent was the performance tent. There was a stage in the center, but only three sides had audience seats. It was quite large, it could probably seat up to 300 at least. There was a popcorn vendor right outside the tent, void of all popcorn for the moment. The two left the main tent; there were two more tents to look at. One was full of props the other was full of the circus folk, there were bunches of mats and blankets in one corner, a lot of them were in bags with names written on them. Currently there was a large table there, covered in food and surrounded by people. It was rather like a large party. Reist found himself looking around for Fen. He looked down and left the tent, he could feel tears falling. Trick didn't notice him leave, and went to the table to mingle and eat.

Reist slid down to the ground and cried, doing his best to keep silent. All of the feelings he had felt in the past few days flooded out at once. The fear anger and sadness, the longing for his mate, his home sickness; he couldn't handle it. He knew he would be able to get back to Fen soon, but soon wasn't soon enough. He stayed there for about thirty minutes before he began to get a hold of himself. He wiped his face off on his shirt and went back inside, dessert was being eaten now, and trick was talking animatedly with another fox, this one red. He joined his friend; the foxes started teaching him vulpinian.

Rorick and Brute

"Can you think of anywhere he would want to go?" Brute asked

"Now that you mention it.... he's probably trying to get back to that dragon tribe." The wolf said slowly. "But if he's not flying then it's definitely going to take a while, I got here by harpy, but if he's walking it could take a week at least."

"Well. Let's keep our ears to the ground until then. One of us should be here at the airport at all times, to make sure they don't try to fly again" Brute said

"That's a good plan" Rorick said, chewing on his tongue, he knew they had to work together but he really hated feeling like he was being bossed around. "I'll take first watch." He said. "Can you have a message sent for me?"

"Yea why?" Brute asked

"I need to tell my clan where I am. And what's going on." Rorick said

"Can you write?" Brute asked

"No." Rorick said

"Ok." Brute took out his phone "tell me what you want to say. There's a harpy messenger service. They can get it there fast."

"Reist turned traitor and mated with a Rising sun, I'm hunting them both down, and they might be seeking refuge within the dragon tribe." Rorick said. Brute nodded

"Ok. I'll go send this and be back in a few hours to take my shift."

To be continued

Reist and trick have disappeared; Fen, hoping his mate went back to the tribe has left. Rorick's message will reach the clans before Fen gets off the plane and when he returns, the dragons and wolves are on the brink of war.
