Master Chef

A Drunken Wolf Production

The royal kitchen was bussling with activity as the group of otters whisked bowls, prepared fruit slices, and did taste tests on the assorted pans and dishes. They worked side by side adding candied chestnuts to a three layered strawberry short cake and spreaded chocolate icing up and down another. The kitchen was working quietly sending sweet smells of deliciousness wafting through the castle and out to the court yards. The smallest otter, a white furred otter, wearing a slumped over back chef's cap, barked out orders. The rest of his six kitchen members, tall black and brown otters, ran around doing as instructed.

"I need a sack of potatoes to mash from the outside pantry. Tell Syrus in the cellar we need a few barrels of cidar for the feast tonight. Have him bring up three. Layer the vegetables and lightly season that soup," he called to three seperate otters as they passed by.

"Yes master chef."

The small otter dipped a finger in a pot of brown gravy as it simmered slowly on the stove. He added more pepper stirring it slowly before testing it again. Satisfied, he turned down the flame and opened a side window. With the king's feast at hand, the young kitchen master had his paws full. Even with three days advance the otter was still having trouble getting everything spread out. He would have easily been able to finish in two but with the king issueing the "Master chef challenge", he had way more work than he wanted.

The Master chef challenge consisted of a display of foul in a natural nature scene of beauty against the current master chef. He had won the challenge easily recieving a royal standing ovation becoming the youngest master chef after beating his predessesor. Three years later he was up to lose his posistion against a new oponent from a neighboring kindom. He sighed softly pulling several large cooked geese from the oven to cool. The smell radiated through the kitchen and out the door trailing through the castle. With in seconds he could hear tapping at his kitchen door. The small otter marched over to the door yanking it open peering out.

"Good afternoon Tenchi. Have anything i can sample?" Prince Kota said beaming down taking a sniff of the room.

The otter grumbled looking up at the golden lion's red pleading eyes as Cervix stood behind him peering over his shoulder. "Out of all the times to come asking for something," the otter thought to himself looking around the kitchen. Grabbing a large slice of blueberry pie, the slice he had been saving all morning for himself, relunctantly handed it over to the prince.

"Have a good afternoon sire," the otter bowed slamming the the door in his royal face.

Half a day was left and he was no where near prepared for endless distractions. Not only did he and his six cooks have to prepare the feast, they still had to cotend with the hungry royals and high ranking knights coming down begging for scraps. The cornish hens still needed to be stuffed, lemons sliced, along with the potatos he was still waiting on. In the very back of the kitchen a hefty sized mole's head peeked out from underneath the cellar door sniffing around. He dissapeared for a moment reappearing with a large northen oak barrel. He pushed it out from under his cellar door and continued that way until all three barrels were stacked side by side.

"These finished some time last fall. Apple, peach, and a strawberry cidar i've been experimenting with. Anything else?" the mole said watching the seven otters work.

"Not at the moment Syrus. I made you a salad with celary, tomatoes and roasted almonds just the way you like it, with a cheese and brocoli turnover to munch on," the otter said flagging down a helper to bring him the meal.

"Thanks master chef," the mole said taking his plate from the assistant lowering the cellar lid.

"That's how moles were," he thought to himself as the cooks diced away at fruits and vegetables. Moles were always so respectful and right to the point. The perfect creature to live underneath the kitchen. Not only was Syrus quick, he was a master drink crafter well prized by the king. The mole could fashion a blue berry fizz punch that the kingdom swore made your tail tingle. Tenchi did a dance of happiness as the potatoes arrived.

It was really dessert time now in the kitchen as the otters iced, topped, frosted, layered, and tasted all the cakes and pies they were making. With the king hosting the event in his kingdom, the small otter not only had to make a lot of everything, but everything also had to taste perfect.

"Where's my sewing thread and needle. I didn't spend hours plucking those birds for noth- Oh what now," he groaned as another tapping came from the kitchen door.

He marched over to the door drawing his small, slightly stained with strawberrry jelly apron to his body, before ripping the door open.

"What!" he snapped into the face of Princess Hidee.

She crumpled her soft creme muzzle in a frown and acted as if she was about to cry.

"Oh princess. I thought. Oh no, i'm sorry. Please.. don't cry," he said running into the kitchen and grabbing a small sack of candied roasted chestnuts.

"My apoligies your magisty," he chuckled nervously crouching back into the kitchen pulling the door slowly closed.

"Can i get a look out. PLEASE! I almost had a heart attack," he said jokingly going back to mashing the potatoes.

It was getting darker outside the small kitchen window as the otters toiled beside the counters working hard on the final preperations for the feast. Master Tenchi worked hard sewing his feathers onto his geese and propping them up for his display. Carriges were arriving and the young kitchen master could hear horse shoes clacking up in the distance. His ears perked as his kitchen door pushed open.

"Master chef, King Moriss' and his chef are here. The old hyena is setting up in the spare kitchen now," a medium sized ferret said looking at all the cakes. "Wow boss, is that all for tonight," he said reaching for a powdered sugar topped chocolate pastry.

"Sampson Ferret you get out of my kitchen," the white otter yelled throwing a spatula at the ferret as he bit into it spilling chocolate down his front.

The otters were setting up in the main dining hall now, dutifuly hauling out all the food and desserts into the beautifuly crafted chamber. Syrus was setting the second to the last barrel of cidar as the last sounds of horse shoes faded into the king's stable. As they worked, Tenchi sat in the kitchen adding his top birds onto thier wreath. It was hard work pinning them up. He finished his contruction as Sampson stuck his head in again.

"Woah.....The royal announcer is welcoming everyone into the dining hall. You ready Master chef," he called staring up at the large display.

"I spent all day on this. It's as ready as it will ever be," Tenchi said pushing it out.

Inside the chamber the crowd had gathered into their chairs filling around the sides of the room infront of the royal table that sat back in the middle. The ambience was nice and members talked amongst themselves under the golden chandelers glimmering above. They gasped at the mass amounts of food and marvouled at the well crafted desserts that lined the tables. Prince Kota came in through the side door escorting his sister into the room by paw to her seat. She lifted her artisticaly sewn light yellow dress and nodded to her brother before sitting down. He sat down beside her resting his head on his hand waiting for the feast to start. Standing in the door way the hyena chef watched as tenchi walked in dusting his paws.

"So your my competition. I heard you were prety good. You look barely over fourty seasons though," he cackled down at the otter.

"I'm just over fifty-six seasons actually,"the otter said flatly walking past him and leaning against the wall.

The king finally graced the chambers pressence along side the tiger king Moriss. All in attendance stood as the royal announcer introduced the two kings. King Moriss took a seat next to his royals on the side as the king padded over to where his children sat. He looked over the crowd and then to the colors of delicious food before him spread out across the tables. Perfectly browned stuffed cornish hens layered around beds of lettus with brown gravy sauce. Slow roasted pigs with with juicy apples in thier snouts beside racks of lamb. Different gravy's, sauces, and toppings were all layered around fresh baked breads and rolls. The king raised a paw and spoke.

"Before we start are feast this evening, I have two chef's that are well known throughout there kingdoms. Chef Brent from King Moriss' kingdom, and our young little master chef. Some of you may think his skill is weak because he is young. But i guarentee he has "Taste" in his blood. As the rules state challenger may go first," he finished slowly waving to the hyena and sitting down.

The hyena stood and bowed to the king and motioned out the door for his assistance to bring in his creation. The crowd awed as the scene came into view. Seven ducks, a mother and six babies. were expertly sewn together so they looked as if they were walking alive down a bread crumb path. Large celery and cabbage were acting as grass and sticks on either side. The crowd clapped as the hyena bowed.

"Your majesty, I give you "A tasty crossing" he said as the king smiled.

The prince and the princess clapped enjoying the display. The king nodded and the hyena sat back down at the back of the grand chamber. Master Tenchi bowed as the king nodded to him. He took a deep breath and motioned back through the doors for his crew to come forward. They walked into the hall way and the crowd went dead quiet. Tenchi walked forward and bowed to the king.

"I give you, "Defend at all costs," he said as the king's smile grew.

On the table, decorated with intense design, his all day display unfolded.

Centered under a beautful green parsley, oregeno, and thyme woven wreath, a large geese stood with its wings spread wide. Its wings perfectly stictched so it looked like it was flapping back in attack trying to thwart off some predator. Four smaller geese were hanging fine stitched to the wreath with their wings angled as if they were diving in ready to defend their leader. Beneath their feet, a cooked brown bread, looked like a dirt path with pea stalks, lettus, and thinly sliced green bean sprouts asking as shrubs and bushes. The crowd stood trying to get a better look as the king applauded.

"We have a clear winner, would you agree my young master chef has beaten yours," the lion said smiling wide.

King Moriss nodded clapping his paws. The crowd followed suit as the otter was grabbed into a group hug by the other six. Tenchi grinned bright raising two fingers to the king celebrating his second master chef challenge. The king nodded and waved a paw for the feast to start.

The food slowly dissapeared, as did the dessert as the crowd finished plate after plate of the otter and his crew's cooking. They watched happily leaning up against the back wall as the sevents cleared finished plates away. Mashed potatos slowly vanished as did cranberry sauce and ears of corn. Chef Brent had already left not wanting to celebrate the otters win taking off in his carrige shortly after the feast started. Tenchi smiled watching Princess Hidee try to feed her brother a slice of strawberry cake accidently pushing the top half into his nose. They laughed as siblings do while the king sipped his cidar. He was particularly impressed with the strawberry one and made a mental note to tell the mole to keep it in supply. The feast had gone perfectly so far. Even king Moriss was enjoying himself. The tiger had losened his belt strap so he could acess more room. Tenchi sighed happily shaking his head from side to side walking out the chamber back to his kitchen. Turning on the spout he slowly went to work washing the huge stack of dishes. Soon his crew would come in and start gathering supplies and turning on stoves and ovens. He wiped his forehead looking into his sink with a smile. He only had two days to prepare for Princess Hidee's birthday.

I have no idea what I was thinking when we co wrote this. I still don't quite get it. Jack does that.
