We interup our regularly scheduled....whatever, for this!

I've been meaning to try my hand at some post-apocalyptic fiction. I used to not like it that much, as I don't like the idea of the world ending very much, but I'll admit, now I think it can be pretty good. So I decided to try it, as I already had an idea on my head for a while now. Heck, maybe now I can return with more stories for this universe.

Oh yeah, also I was planning of naming this "AA: After Anthro", but then I realized that sounded a bit like Alcoholics Anonymous (much like when Sheldon Cooper named his Physics Bowl team the Army Ants), so I change it. Just a little insider fact.

In a millitary bunker in the ground, somewhere in the Sonoran Desert, a soldier by the name of Pvt. Robbie Davison waited for a buzzer. He had, for the last year, been part of a military experiment. It was to test isolation in a new prototype emergancy bunker the army was working on. The idea was to see how long someone could stand without contact with the outside world. They chose Robbie for his strong willpower. He would have just books, DVD's, CD's and other things from before the experiment, but no updates. He would have enough food and water stored to last him that time. He even had a M4 Carbine, a Beretta M9 pistol and a hunting knife just in case. After all, the desert is a big empty place and for all the army knew, some home-grown terrorists could come across it and attack it as a sort of middle finger to the army. The only contact Robbie had with the outside world was a hidden phone in a special room in case of an emergancy or if Robbie couldn't stand being isolated any longer before the army's deadline of one year was up.

It's not like he would miss too much personally. He didn't have much in the way of close family and was single, so he wouldn't be effecting the lives of anyone close to him. He had friends, but having friends in the millitary means they understand having you leave for long periods of time.

But Robbie's time was almost up. He looked at the timer, bouncing a rubber ball that he used to help pass the time he was down there. On the timer, it's last minute counted down, until it hit zero, setting off a buzzer, which opened the heavy steel door. Robbie stepped out into the bright sunlight, shielding his eyes as he had not stepped into the sun's rays for a while. After about a minute, his brown eye's ajusted to the sunlight. He was surprised to see no one was there. OK, granted, it WAS the desert, but Robbie would have expected someone waiting in a jeep or something. They had known about this for a year, and if there is one thing the army is known for, it's keeping on time. So, Robbie desided to wait a bit. He stood there, in his green jumpsuit, just waiting. The early morning sun reflected off of his box-shaped head, topped with a buzz cut. He had a medium-sized build, although he was still quite tough despite not looking like a nightclub bouncer at first glance.

After about an hour, Robbie went back inside towards the emergancy phone.

"They said to only use it in emergancies," Robbie said to himself in a gravely voice, "But it's not like I have a cell phone to call them with." He picked up the bright red phone. The only responce he got was that the line was disconected. This was odd, because the whole point of this phone was to contact the army. The only way for it not to be reached is if the phone lines we're down.

The dry, desert wind blew inside the now opened buncker. Along with some sand, it blew in a peice of paper. Robbie went over to look at it. I had imagaes of werewolf-like creatures being hunted down by a human mob. It had a caption "Slay the inhuman beasts!" in bold, black letters. Before Robbie could geuss what kind of hateful propaganda this was, he noticed something else about it: it had mud on it. He could tell from the dark brown colour that this was the kind of mud you would find in a forest many miles away from this area. He wasn't sure what was going on, so he walked outside to a small ridge that was nearby. He looked and was surprised. The world had changed. There was still desert, but in the distance, he could see a mountin range, forests, jungle, grassland. He could even make out a large lake in the distance! He ran back inside and picked up a backpack that was laying around. He packed it full of what spare supplies he could find: food, water bottles, ammo, first aid, et cetera. He wasn't sure what was going on, but one thing he learned from being in the Boy Scouts, it was 'Always be prepared'.

He grabbed the weapons in the bunker and walked out. He went down the dusty road, the ground beneath him crushing beneath his army boots. The bunker was out of the way, but only about two and a half miles from a highway, so he wasn't too far in case of rescue. He walked down, but was surprised not to hear any cars. He never heard anything in the bunker, but that's because it was far enough and the walls were thick enough that it would have blocked out the sound. He was in for another surprise when he got to the highway: it was almost empty! All that was there where a few empty cars and a crashed private jet. Seeing the jet, this explained that loud blast that Robbie had heard a few weeks back.

"And here I thought I was hearing things." commented Robbie, as he touched the surface of the plane's nose. He looked into the pliot seats to see a dead body of the pilot. The co-pilot was no where to be seen.

Suddenly, from under an old pickup truck, Robbie heard a noise. He pulled out his pistol and slowly walked over to it.

"Are you friend or for?" Robbie asked. The responce he got was a low growling. "I am US Army. If you attack, I am permitted to defend myself however possible." The growling just got louder. "This is you're last warning, answer me!" Robbie got next to the truck and crouched down. A light-gray paw swang out at him, but Robbie just grabbed it and dragged the owner out from under the truck. Before he could do anything else, something grabbed his other arm and started growling. He turned his head to see a very angry human-rottweiler hybrid. It wore a torn, black t-shirt and ripped jeans.

"Put her down." it snarled. Robbie was paralyzed with fear. The creature that Robbie had dragged out got onto it's feet, revealing it a be a female hybrid between a human and a jaguar. She had dark black hair, which slightly covered up bright green, cat-like eyes. She wore a blue t-shirt with ripped cargo shorts and like Robbie, . She had a lithe body type and was about a foot shorter then the 5'9" Robbie.

"OK Travis." the jaguar women told the rottweiler man in a soothing voice, "You don't need to hurt him."

"But he tried to shoot you!" the rottwiler shouted. "He could be one of those cult followers. I mean look at him! He already has his hair shaved!"

"He is wearing an army uniform, I think he has other reasons." the jaguar argued.

"I don't trust this human." the dog man snarled back.

The jaguar crossed her arms, shoot a nasty look at him and said "Travis, I was human once."

He let Robbie go, who just slumped to the ground. "OK, OK." he sighed.

Robbie was staring at the ground. A year in the bunker hadn't made him crack, but all of this was getting to him.

"What is going on here?" he asked in a disturbed voice.

The jaguar bent down on her knees and held up Robbie's chin with her hand, much like an adult comferting a lost child. She told him "I'll be honest with you. The end of the world happened."

"Who are you two? What are you two?" Robbie asked.

The jaguar pointed to herself. "My name is Silvia. Silvia Cruz. And that brute over there is Travis." she explained to Robbie in a slow kind of voice. "Who are you?"

Robbie, starting to recover a bit, told her "OK, OK, I was in shock, not stupid. I'm Private Robert Davison, but my friends call me Robbie."

Silvia sat down, as to get more comfortable and continued the conversation. "OK, Robbie. What were you doing going pointing guns at girls in the desert?"

"I was in a military experiment, testing an emergancy bunker for the army. I was there for a year and saw....all this." Robbie told her. "What were you doing hiding under a old truck?"

"Collecting spare vehicle parts." she answered.

Robbie raised an eyebrow. "There's no working cars here." Robbie observed. "Why would you need spare parts?" Travis's ears twitched.

"That's the reason." he answered, pointing down the road to the east. Suddenly, from the distance, came the sound of a engine revving engine and shouts of enjoyment. Robbie could see a large white RV with the word 'CHARGE!' spray painted on the side in bright red and solar panels to power the engine on the back. It came to a screeching halt just before it could come close to hitting anyone.

The door on the side opened, and out stepped the driver, a dark blue dragon in loose pants and a plaid shirt.

"Devyn!" Silvia shouted. "What have I told you about driving it like that?!? You know how hard it is to find a good vehicle these days!?!?"

"Come on." Devyn told her, leaning against the mighty vehicle. "We still got food and stuff. Besides, my moblie home, my rules."

Silvia popped her claws out and explained "We need this RV of yours so we can get around faster."

"So what? You find spare parts, don't you?" responded Devyn.

Silvia continued "You didn't let me finish. If you wreck that, I don't think your girlfriend is going to like the fact you wrecked your home....and the fact I'm going to castrate you if you do!" Devyn's eyes widened. He gulped and handed the keys over to her. "Thank you."

It was about then that a bat in a leather jacket leaned out of of a window in the back. "Hey Silvia! Who's that guy?" he shouted, pointing at Robbie.

...

A little later, the group was on the road in the RV. They had gotten what supplies that Robbie couldn't carry from the bunker and placed it inside. Silvia was behind the wheel while the guys sat in the back. The bat, named Merlin, laided down a map he made of the area to help explain what happened. They had already explained that one day, one in two people the world over turned into animals, as well as some of the animals turning into people (sort of). Suffice it to say, this led to chaos, with sucide, murder, and the occsional accidental death from those who's new bodies where not fit for where they were, like the various new cetaceans that where unlucky enough to be far from water. The world changed also, defying laws of climate and geography, with mountains pushing up out of citys, lakes appearing in grasslands and jungles appearing next to deserts. Governmants didn't stand a chance, unable to handle such an event. But humanity, even with half of it now being different species was starting to at least live in the fallout of the old world. Some became nomadic, wandering the land to try and survive as best as possible, well others have formed settlements, some even controling the surrounding areas as little mini-nations.

"So, explain to me who's in control here." said Robbie.

Merlin pointed a winged arm at the desert area from where they found him.

"Well, here's the desert." he explained. "You're lucky we found you, because that's in the Kingdom of Orange."

"Why is it called that?" asked Robbie.

"Because it's ruled by a bunch of fomer inmates. After what happened, they overthrew the guards. From the maximum security prison, they built a sort of city based after a mix of medieval and classic roman design. They like to attack anyone who enters their land and raiding people who settle nearby like us. Lucky for us, we have some very good defences, so they never get very far. Those who don't, however, if they aren't straight up killed, they're taken prisoner. The men are made to fight in gladiatorial combat in their old prison yard; the women become the sex slaves of the fomer inmates." Travis growled with anger at this last part.

Merlin then pointed to a grassland that was now to the north of the desert territory. "Here is where the tribes live. They are a bunch of transformed people and animals that this whole was a sign to live the simple life and go back to nature. They live the simple tribal type life, with different tribes in different spots. They are friendly to use and a mostly peaceful, but they will go all out on you if you mess with them."

He moved his hand north to the temperate forest, an enviroment that this area probably hasn't seen in thousands of years. "These woods here are mostly unsettled, mostly because there is this crazy cult in there that thinks this stuff is a punishment from guards and kills just about any non-human that comes through. There is sort of a debate back home over if we should just march over there and kick them out or not."

He moved even farther north to the mountin range over in the north-eastern part of the map. "Here in the mountins, there are all sorts of different villiages. Some are pretty open, others don't trust strangers very much, but overall not very malicious group."

He finally moved his finger and used it the cricle the land a large area of map around the large lake. in the south-west corner. "And here is our settlement. Well call it 'New America'. It's a few thousand strong. We are the most powerful group for miles around. We are made up of both humans and various non humans. There's even some who live in the lake in the center. We hope to spread out a bit more to give some more room."

"So," asked Robbie, who despite being past the initial shock of the whole thing was still unsure of all of this. "You're OK with all this? With the world as you know it being over? No computers, no TV, next to no cars?"

"Surprisingly, yes." responded Merlin, as folded up the map. "Sure, I miss the internet, but I think that's a good trade for super hearing and being able to fly."

"How about you, Travis?" Robbie questioned.

Travis explained "Before the event, I was a normal dog. My owners abused me. After I changed, I ran away. I got cought by the Kingdom of Orange, and they made me fight as a gladiator, but I escaped and ran to New America. There, I learned not all humans are bad and even found a mate with another former dog. So yeah, I like it."

Robbie turned over to the dragon sitting next to him and asked him what he thought.

"Are you kidding? My life is great now!" Devyn answered. "Before, I was a weak little geek with braces with a crush on this other geek girl who wrote fan-fiction in the library. Now, I'm a mighty dragon and she is a beauty." Robby walked over to the passenger seat of the RV.

"There it is." Silvia pointed out. Robbie could see a giantic wall of reinforced scrap metal and concrete. He could see snipers, both human and animal looking over the wall.

One guard came over to the RV and, seeing that Silvia's group had returned from collecting supplies, he opened the front gate to let her in. Through the windows, Robbie could see that the main city was around the water front, but with lots of farmland in the space between in the the wall that encircled the settlement. He noticed that the buildings where make either out of scrap metal and other recycled materials or out of desert rock like people would have made them in ancient times. Soon, Silvia came to an open spot and parked the RV.

As Travis, Merlin and Devyn collected their stuff to give to the local merchents, Robbie and Silvia walked out and saw to animal women talking with each other. One was a husky with light red fur wearing a pink dress. She was talking to a swift fox wearing overalls and a red t-shirt. They turned to see the group walking out of the RV. The husky wagged her tail when she saw Travis walk out.

"Travis!" she shouted, licking her mate's face. Travis's stubby tail started to wag as well.

Travis started to walk home with his mate, smiling and telling her "I'm so glad to see your face again, Ivanna."

The vixen ran over to Merlin and hugged him.

"Hey Rose." Merlin greeted her.

"Hey there sexy." she responded, picking up some of the supplies to bring to the local merchants. She and Merlin left quickly to make that week's pay. Merlin waved goodbye to the group.

Devyn called out "Angela! I'm back." Out from behind a rock popped up a women's head, with flowing red hair.

"Hey, she looks kind of cute." noted Robbie. That point of view was soon shattered for Robbie when Angela went over to Devyn, revealing herself to be a naga of sorts, with a jet black, serpentine lower body, yellow eyes and fangs in her mouth. She wrapped her lower body around Devyn's body as he got knocked back towards the trailer. Devyn still tried to be nice.

"Hey Angela. This is Robbie. He's a new guy we found." said Devyn.

Angela stuck her tongue down her boyfriend's throat and between breaths, she stuck her hand out and shoke Robbie's hand and told him "Nice to meet yea'." as she and Devyn walked inside the RV.

"We better leave them." explained Silvia, as the vehicle started to rock from side to side. "I'll show you around.

...

Later that night, Silvia and Robbie walked up the stairs that led to her front door. She had shown him the whole settlement from the lakeshore to the guards at the wall. Everywhere they had stopped, Robbie had asked someone if they were OK with all this change and, besides from some things they were still justing to, they didn't seem to mind. Even when he and Silvia stopped at a restaurant for dinner, he still asked and people agreed, even with their very species changed, they found this way of life to be sort of an improvment.

Silvia unlocked the door to her house. As she opened it a pure white female ferret popped out and kissed her on the lips!

"Connie!" she shouted. "What have I told you about doing that?"

Connie gave a coy grin and said "That it makes you hot and bothered. It's what you get for giving me the key. Say, who's this cutie?"

"That's Robbie. We found him in the desert." she explained.

"Well, here's my card, big boy." Connie told Robbie. She handed him a white card and said her goodbyes.

As they walked inside, Robbie wondered what kind of job would she have. He read it and found it said "Town bicycle".

"So what's this Connie girl all about, well, besides just what it says on the card." Robbie inquired.

As they sat down on the coach, Silvia answered "Well, she sleeps with everyone. It's her way of making people happier. I can tell you, in the time this place has been set up, she has slept with every legal-aged person she could. Well, not counting the gay guys, but it's a little hard for a women to really please them."

"Well, that would explain why everyone is so calm around here." suggested Robbie.

"She sure has made the eighteenth birthdays of alot of people here, male and female." she added.

Robbie placed his right leg over his left one and pointed out as he removed his boot "And you as well, from what I can tell."

"Oh yeah, I guess I forgot to mention I'm bisexual." she giggled. "It's actually something I found out when the event happened. Me and Connie were room mates. I was a chubby latino girl with glasses, she was a Irish girl from a very old fashioned family that made it so if even making out was brought up, she would blush like crazy. Then, one day, we start morphing and we are so different..."

"Sounds like the synopsis of a porno." Robbie told her as he took off his other boot.

Silvia blushed and explained "Well, let's say we didn't leave the apartment for the first three days. Anyway, well dated each other for a while, but then decided to move on. We are still friends with benefits though, FYI."

Robbie, who wasn't actually that great at taking hints from women, yawned and told his hostess "Man, what a day. I'm tried. Mind if I sleep on your coach?"

Silvia, walking over to the door to her bedroom, answered "Sure. Guest bathroom is that door over on the right. Goodnight."

"Goodnight." Robbie told her as he streched out on the coach and went to sleep.

Silvia walked into her bedroom towards the door that lead to her personal bathroom. It was a small, bright blue room with a sink (water coming from the lake), a medicine cabinet that reached the floor (in such a world, one needs to keep more supplies then usual), a toliet (the wasted led to a pit that would fill untill it had to be cleaned out) and a shower/ bathtub combo. She began to remove her clothes, doing sort of a strip show for herself in front of her full length mirror. She slowly removed everything until she was buck naked. She smiled bashfuly. She had always been somewhat attracted to women, but until the event, she had been in the closet. Even now, she was far from being as promiscuous as Connie.

She turned one the shower and stepped into the cool water. As she washed her body with a bar of cactus oil soap, she thought about Robbie.

"I can't believe this." she thought to herself. "I just met this guy today, and I already have the hots for him. But then agian, he is pretty nice and athletic. And he's pretty sweet. I wonder what he looks like-Silvia! Get ahold of yourself! He's in the next room. Don't go on like your in heat!"

After taking her shower, Silvia stepped out of the shower. She shook off most of the water. She giggled as this was one of her favourite things about being an animal. After she finished drying herself off (and drying off the walls of her bathroom), she went through the rest of her nightly routine; brushed her teeth, brushed her hair, then she went into her dark brown bedroom. She grabbed her large, loose fit aqua green sleepshirt and put it on. It had the words 'sex kitten' written across it.

She got under the thin covers of her bed, thought about Robbie one more time, sighed contently and went to sleep.

The end (for now)
