  • * * (Chapter One) On a beatutiful moonlit night a man lay by his campfire pondering the day as he takes a long drag from his hash pipe. It was late summer and he had a lot to do if he was going to make it through the cold Alaskan winter. He had just used the last of his firewood, there was food to catch, hides to skin, but most importantly he had to make another shelter. The following week a grizzly bear had tore apart his cabin just to get to a salmon he had just caught. Luckly the human was out for the day exploring his surroundings, when he got back his cabin was in ruins. While he laid on his side watching as the fire he construced slowly go out he heard a faint howl from a nearby wolf and he began to fall into a deep sleep. Minutes later a loud gunblast followed by a loud yelp and a serries of howls had woken him, "Poachers" he says to himself. With that he stands, picks his makeshift bow up, and his knife and takes off towards the sound. He knew he was outgunned and outnumbered but he did not care. He hated poachers and hunters that killed for profit or for the thrill of killing. His pace quickened as he heard a bunch of deep growls follow by a yelp. When he had finally caught up to the noises he could smell gunpowder in the air. Fearing for the worse he crept towards a brightly glowing fire, four men guns in hand were circled around the fire. Wolves were laying everywhere and there was no doubt that they have been murdered, the man sobbed at the sight of this. Althought he was scruffy looking, the heart stricken man loved all creatures of the forest especially the wolf, but it seemed to be too late for this poor pack of wolves. Anger filled his heart and without thinking he picked up a good sized rock and threw it directly at one of the men standing around the fire. With a loud thud, the man fell to the ground, blood gushing from his head. The other three men didnt know what hit him, for they figured they were alone. There was a great deal of distress between the men and a moment later an arrow pierced another man through the neck. The last two men fired their guns in the direction of where they though the arrow had came. The enraged man had dodged the bullets that were being fired and managed to creep up behind the shooters. Another arrow straight through the back this time, and before the last remaining man got the chance to turn around his neck was cut. The lonely man fell to his knees and cryed for a great while. He mourned for the wolf family and at the fact that he has not killed another human being. As the man stood up he was supprised to hear a wimper come from behind him. It was a lone wolf who had survived the onslaught, the poor wolf was bleeding from its leg from where a bullet had hit. The wolf also had a fair ammount of blood on its muzzle from either where the creature suffered a cut or was just licking its wound. The amazed man leaned over the wolf, " Your poor creature, what have they done to you?" "P- Please, im in pain!" The wolf cried out. The stricken man took a few steps back, amazed that the wolf had just spoken to him. "But how, i mean.. what?" the man oblivously puzzled, he thought he was hearing things. "Help, me.." with that the female wolf had fell unconsicous. The man picked up the motionless creature and carried her back to his camp. He pulled the bullet out of her leg, bandaged her up and wiped off the blood from her muzzle, luckily she had no wounds other than the gunshot. He sat accross from the wolf as she lay resting on his cott. "Did she really speak to me?" he thought to himself. "Nah shes just a wolf, how sure am i that its even a female? She sounded like one when she spoke." He walked over the the sleeping wolf and lifted her tail to check, sure enought she was a female. "That still dosent mean she spoke to me.." he said unsure of himself. The man put out the glowing embers of the fire and set up a spot next the the heated rocks that supported the fire and fell into an uneasy sleep. The next day the man had woken up earlier than usual. He checked on the wolf, she was still in a deep slumber. He made himself some breakfast, the last of the oatmeal that he had in storage. Oatmeal was just about the only thing that the grizzly bear had not snacked on. He had no money left so hiking the fourty miles back into town was out of the question, especially with an injured wolf to take care of. He decided that he was going to go to the spot where everything went down lastnight. He burried the wolves next to eachother and had a moment of silence. He also burried the four poachers as a sign of respect for their spirits. When he got back to camp a few hours later he saw that the wolf was awake, still in the same place but wide awake. "I must say im rather supprised to see you still here." He stood there waiting for a reply back but the wolf didnt say anything she just looked at the bewildered man and laid her head down. He was amazed to see such a wild creature so tame and unafraid of the man that saved her life. She just laid there looking at the ground, "The poor girl must be deeply depressed about the loss of her family." He thought (Chapter Two) She was a young gray wolf, maybe a yearling. The wolf was about 75 pounds and she had a white coat that streched down her belly and legs. Her back was grey and black that streched from the top of her head down to her tail. The wolve's muzzle and ears were a golden red color. Her eyes were very powerful and bright yellow with almost a reddish outline to them. Hunger had hit the man and he picked up the bow and went hunting for both the wolf and himself. He managed to catch two rabbits and brought one to her feet she was grateful and managed to gobble up most of the rabbit despite the pain that she had been through. After they both finished up their meals the wolf stood up and limped over to where her hero was sitting. "I just wanted to thank you for everything you have done for me." She licked his hand. " If it was not for you i would have probably be dead right now." Althought he had heard her speak the night before the man was in more shock than ever. " You CAN talk can't you?" He got on one knee and started to stroke her head. " I knew i wasn't just hearing things." She was amazed how good it felt when he scratched behind her ears. " Well of corse i cant talk, silly. Im communicating with you through E.S.P..." She started scratching her side like a dog would do when they get a good itch behind their ears or backs. "...You use your words to speak and i reply by speaking to you through thoughts." "Thats amazing, never in my life would i ever think that i would be talking to one of my most beautiful creature in the whole animal kingdom." He stopped scratching her head and looked into her beatuiful eyes. " What is your name, pup?" "My names Tala, it means to be born under a full moon." Tala managed a smile for the first time. " What is your name?" "My name? No on has asked me that for several years." he stopped and pondered at the question for several seconds. "I used to go by the name of Jimmy, but that name has no meaning to me anymore.." At that he got up and walked over to a small river that resides on the back end of his ruined cabin knelt down and got a drink of water. Sensing the saddness of her newfound friend, Tala limped over to him and also took a sip out of the river. " Well is it okay if i give you a name?" looking at Tala and smileing at the idea, "What do you have in mind?" "How about... Hmm... Kitchi? aww its a cute name.. it means to be brave. And you were pretty brave to come save me." Tala's ears were bend back waiting for his answer. "Kitchi? I love it, way better than my old name." he turned to her. "Oh and Tala? Your welcome." * * * To be continured...?
