#2 of The Human series

Part two of The Human series. As always let me know what you think!

The next morning I work abruptly as my alarm sounded at 6:00 A.M. "It's way too early to be up right now," I muttered to myself as I groggily got up out of bed and jumped into the shower. I had to get up this early because I was heading to my new school Keystone early so I could know where I was going.

From what I've researched into Keystone it's a decent sized high school, 1800 students, right around the size of my old high school back home. The school colors were Blue and Black and we were nicknamed the Knights.

After I got out of the shower, I decided what I was going to wear for that day. I'm not one to really get all dressed up for school; I normally wear a pair of shorts or sweatpants along with a t-shirt or a sweatshirt and call it good. But today I had to make a good first impression so I unwillingly put on a pair of jeans along with a nice long sleeved t-shirt.

I grabbed a muffin really quick and headed out to my car at around 6:30 to drive to school. It was about a 10 minute drive and I drove through a couple of neighborhoods. To be honest, nothing really looked different from being back home in Iowa. I was listening to some Passion Pit on my way to school to try and calm me down, I was really nervous going to school for the first time. I pulled up to a stoplight and glanced over to my right to see a female Zebra staring at me. She seemed really surprised and who could blame her; it was the first time she had ever seen a human before. I just smiled and waved at her as the light turned green and I drove off.

I pulled up to the high school and found a good parking spot since there was practically no one there. I walked in and followed the signs to the principals office. The principals office was locaed right by the foyer near the center of the school. I walked in where I was greeted by a fairly large male Panda.

"Ah hello, you must be C.J. Davis. Let me be the first to welcome you to Keystone high school, one of the best high school's here in the state. My name is Mr. Richards." The panda said with a friendly smile on his face

"Thanks for the introduction Mr. Richards, I'm really excited to get started here," I replied a little nervously. You have to remember, this is the first time I'm really interacting with furries.

"Now you have locked number 318, which is on the right side of the foyer, down that hallway. Since you're in your junior year I've given you a normal schedule for a junior. It's in my' understanding that you're pretty smart so we've also placed you in two AP classes as well. You'll be joining us towards the end of our first trimester so you'll be a little bit behind but that's not a big concern. Is that alright with you?"

"Yeah that sounds fine,"

Then I heard a knock on the door, and in walked in a male fox. He was pretty short, maybe 5'8" and he was wearing jeans and short sleeved t-shirt.

"Ah there you are Martin, you're running a bit late you know," Mr. Richards said with a hint of frustration in his voice.

"Yeah my bad, I hit the snooze button a little too much this mourning," The fox responded in an apologetic tone. "Oh man, I didn't even notice the human was already in here. You can come with me and I'll show you where your locker is and all your classes are," He replied with a smile.

We both walked out of the principal's office and he showed me to my locker and around the school which was pretty well kept. He showed me to the cafeteria and he even showed me around to the gym and weight room.

"Well that's our school," Martin said. "I hope that you like it here."

"Yeah it's great. But I do have one question though." I replied.

"Ask away,"

"Is their anybody that I should look out for? You know, someone who isn't really keen to humans or new kids at this school?" I asked. I didn't wanna stir up any trouble so I was going to try and avoid problems as much as possible.

"Well obviously this is high school so there's gonna be kids that cause problems. Honestly, some furries are gonna do stuff to get under you're skin. One person you should look out for though is Alex Payne, he's a Great Dane. About as mean as they come. Him and his group of friends think they run the school."

"Got it, thanks for the advice I really appreciate it," I replied taking note to what he had told me.

"Anytime. Hey and if you need anything just let me know I'll help ya out." He said as he went off to his fist hour class.

It was almost time for school to start and I made my way towards the foyer, which is the way I needed to go to get to my next class. The foyer also happens to be the place where most of the students group together and talk before class.

Once I got my way into the foyer it was like a scene from a movie. The place went quiet and everybody began staring at me. It was rather awkward for me as I kind of just looked around at everybody and eventually made my way upstairs towards my math class.

I took a seat in the back corner of the class and watched as furries began to pile into the class. Some of them noticed me and glanced at me while others didn't really pay much attention to me.

The bell rang and a female Zebra rose from her desk and started the class. She lectured for a little bit about absolute values and graphing then assigned us to go into partners. I was partnered up with a shy male Dalmatian whose name was Dustin. He was a nice kid, he didn't really talk much and he seemed to be really nervous that he was working with a human.

Near the end of the class the teacher turned on the TV and we started watching the daily announcements. Mr. Richards came on and told everyone that I was attending Keystone and to give me a warm welcome. Then he rattled off some other announcements, I wasn't really paying attention but I did catch what I needed to hear.

"Varsity Basketball tryouts will be today after school in the main gym. Please see coach Key if you haven't already to," The panda said over the intercom.

"Hey Dustin, would you happen to know where coach Key's office is?" I asked.

"Umm yea it's room 208. You play basketball?" He replied with a curious look on his face

"Yeah, I've played it all my life." I said as the bell rang. "I'll see ya around."

The rest of the day, for the most part, went like my first class. Everybody was a little hesitant to talk to me because I was a human. There were a couple of brave souls to managed the will to talk to me but the conversations were awkward and didn't really last very long.

At the end of the day I made my way into coach Keys room and I saw that he was a pretty tall bull, with blue eyes. He looked up from his desk and notice that I was standing in my door.

"Are you lost or is their anything I can help you with?" coach Keys said without looking away from his computer.

"Actually I heard the announcement that we we're supposed to come talk with you. I'm interested in going out for basketball," I replied. He immediately glanced up from his computer and shot me a curious look.

"You want to play basketball?" He said, keeping that curious look on his face. "Have you ever played before?"

"Since I was five I've been playing basketball." I said.

"Alright well tryouts is today at four. We only accept 12 players on the varsity squad so you'll be competing with about 19 other kids for a varsity spot. I think that I have an extra practice jersey that you could use for today. Here's a mini-playbook, know these plays for tryouts today. If you make the team we'll give you the full playbook." The Bull explained.

"Alright, see you at practice coach." I replied as I headed out for my next class.

I made my way down into the locker room at about 3:30 to get ready for practice. There was a group of guys all getting ready to practice chatting about something that happened at school today. Their conversation stopped as I walked by and sat down by my new locker. I put on my black practice jersey and shorts. I slipped on my black nikes and headed up towards the main gym.

There was already a couple of furries out shooting around. I grabbed a ball and began to warm up on a side basket. I noticed most of the furries in the gym stopped shooting around and began staring at me, surprised that I was actually playing basketball.

But here's the best part about all of that. None of them know how good I am, I excel at basketball. Back home as a freshman I was the starting point guard on varsity and we finished third at state. Last year as a sophomore I averaged 16 points a game which was good for fourth in the state; I also lead the state in assists per game as I averaged seven assists a game. I already had scholarship offers for Iowa, Iowa State, UNI, Illinois and Creighton with a lot of other schools showing heavy interest. I was also rated as an ESPN top 100 recruit and was considered to be one of the best recruits in the Midwest.

As four o'clock hit coach Key blew his whistle and had everyone meet at center court for a quick meeting before practice. "Gentlemen welcome to another season of tryouts. Incase you haven't noticed we have a new addition to the tryout. C.J. will also be trying out for the team this year. The team will be announced by Thursday give or take a day or two. So let's go out and work hard today."

After we stretched out for a little bit we then did a couple of ballhandling drills, dribbling between and around cones. Ballhandling is one of my strengths so it was a piece of cake for me as I just blew right threw the drill with speed. Coach Key had an surprised expression on his face, along with a lot of others. "That's not all I got," I muttered to myself.

We were about an hour into practice when coach split us into two groups and decided that we would scrimmage. I wasn't picked to start out the scrimmage and I took a seat next to the bench next to a golden retriever who was about my height.

"Hey I don't think I've introduced myself to you yet, my names C.J." I said

"Kyle." He replied extending out an paw. "Nice to meet ya man."

"You too," I replied shaking his hand. "So tell me, who are the better players on the team?" I asked.

"Well the group out there in white are what coach thinks is our best players. Four of them started on varsity last year. The starting two guard is a junior, Jessie Read, a border collie who is about 6'1" and can shoot pretty well. The staring three is a sophomore Brain Jones, a 6'1" Huskie who is pretty solid all around. The starting four is senior Kevin Chapman a lizard who is about 6'3" and can play all around too. Finally there's junior Owen Reynolds, a Jack Russel who is 6'4" and is our post player." Kyle explained.

"What about him?" I nodded in the direction of a Great Dane.

"That's Alex Payne, he wants to be the starting point guard this year." Kyle responded. "He's kinda full of himself."

"Oh duh, I heard about him." I said.

"Davis! Sub in for the black team, you're running point," Coach Keys yelled out.

I got up from the bench and jogged onto the court. A avain bird inbounded me the ball and I brought the ball up the court and called out our motion offense. Payne was guarding me and I noticed right away that he was playing off me quite a bit.

"Shoot it, I dare ya," Payne said with a smirk on his face.

"You don't have to tell me twice," I replied as I fired up a three ball from the top of the key. Swish.

"Come on Payne what the hell was that?" Coach Keys said as the Great Dane brought the ball up the court. "If you're not going to play hard get your ass off the court!" I could already tell that coach Keys had a fiery personality.

I could tell that Payne was pissed off as he brought the ball up the court. He called out a play and they worked the ball around and eventually threw it inside to Russel who scored on a nice hook shot.

I brought the ball up court again and Payne wasn't going to let me another free one. I called for a high ball screen and dribbled hard to my left. They tried to switch on it and I dribbled in between the both of them and made an easy pass for a where a teammate of mine scored a layup.

The rest of practice I outplayed everybody. I was hitting shots along with creating chances for others, which was really pissing off Payne as he was the one guarding me most of the practice. Practice ended at five and coach called me over afterwards.

"Wow, you can really play," He said to me. "I want you to work with the other team tomorrow. You're obviously going to make the team and I want you to get used to playing with some of the other guys."

"Sounds great coach, thanks." I replied cheerfully.

I stuck around after practice for a little bit to work on some free throws. I was approached by the border collie Jessie when I was shooting free throws.

"Hey sorry I didn't introduce myself earlier, I kinda feel like a jerk for not doing so but I'm Jessie," He said a little embarrassed.

"Don't sweat it. I'm C.J." I replied sinking another free throw. "You can really shoot the three ball," I said to him as I got my rebound.

"Yeah I guess. But you couldn't miss out there, you're one of the best players I've ever played with." He said as he watched me shoot another free throw.

"Well I'm only as good as my teammates that's what I like to say," I said to him. "And from what I've seen we've got some talent on our team."

"Yeah we could probably make state this year, especially with you running point. Anyway just a heads up Payne's pretty pissed off that you showed him up today at practice."

"Thanks for the heads up but I'm not really too worried,"

"Alright well I'll see ya tomorrow."

"Yea see ya."

The next day at school I got there at about 7:30 and walked to my locker to put some stuff away. When I shut it and turned around Payne was standing there with a group of furs.

"C.J. right?" He said with a scornful look on his face.

"Yep." Is all I responded with, it's all I could think of.

"Well C.J. I don't really appreciate you showing me up at practice yesterday. Listen up, the starting point guard position is mine and unless you really wanna get fucked up I suggest that you either quit the team or start playing worse at practice," He said as he was inching in on me.

"Hey C.J. Mr. Richards said that he wants to see you in his office," It was Martin.

"Alright," I said grabbing my backpack. "See ya at practice Payne." I walked away with Martin, safely out of danger. For now.

"Mr. Richards doesn't actually want to see you, I just assumed that you were in trouble, Payne seemed pretty pissed."

"Thanks for the assist I was kinda cornered there. But I'm not really scared of Payne, I think he's all talk." I said to Martin. "I dealt with some of those kids back home and normally they just like to act tough."

"I agree with you there, but it still doesn't look good. Well hey, I'll see ya around again."

"Yea see ya."

School again was just like it was yesterday, kinda awkward. No one really making any real attempt to really get to know me. A couple of the guys on the basketball team nodded at me in the hallway but other than that no real interaction .

Before practice a lot of the guys on the team began talking to me and getting to know me a little bit more. At practice, it was the same drill for the most part. We started off stretching went though a couple of drills and started scrimmaging again.

This time coach Keys had me starting on the white team, he replaced me with Payne who started on the black team. We, the white team, were dominating the black team. We were running the offense well. I took more of a passing role in the offense today while picking and choosing my shots. I was playing lockdown defense on Payne who kept missing shots and with every shot he missed his frustration grew.

Towards the end of the scrimmage Payne was dribbling the ball and tried to cross me over. I stuck my hand in and quickly stole it away from him and I had an breakaway. As I went up for the easy two Payne came running in from behind and tried to "block" the ball. His hand hit me in the face and his forearm connect with the side of my head and I lost my balance and came crashing to the floor.

Coach Keys immeadetly blew his whistle and was all over Payne. "What the fuck was that Payne!" He said as I was helped up by my teammates.

"I was going for the ball coach, if he can't take a hard foul he doesn't belong out here," Payne said with a bit of triumph in his voice.

"Don't give me that shit, you purposely hit him. You know what just go home, get the hell out of my gym."

"Whatever, I don't give a shit. You should all be ashamed of yourselves, playing with a human like it's nothing." Payne said as he walked out of the gym.

I stood there and didn't say anything. It wasn't the first time that I was hit hard and it won't be the last.

Practice was over and coach announced the 12 that made the team. I made the team and surprisingly so did Payne. I wasn't really worried that I wasn't going to make the team but its one more thing I don't have to worry about.

"We have a lot of talent on the team this year and we could have a special season this year. Now it all starts with the work that we put in," Coach Keys said after practice. "Two weeks from now we open up our season with against city rival Limestone. Preparation for that game starts now,"
