#6 of Close Combat

Solaris carried Mimi through the crowded streets. Anyone unfortunate enough to so much as graze her footpaw got knocked through a wall. He was REALLY not in the mood for anything right now. He managed to find her home by scent, and walked up to the door. The door was locked! Cursing, the fox kicked the door in. "I'll fix it later." He muttered as he walked in. Ahead of him was a burned couch. He gently set Mimi on the couch, not really knowing what else to do, and called out. "Hey! If anyone's here, get your tail out here! Mimi's hurt! Make sure she doesn't die before I get back!" And then he ran out. Now he released the energy he'd kept pent up inside for the past two days. He ran at speeds he thought he could only achieve in Berserker mode. Apparently the constant use had had an effect on him. He'd come by Diadem before, and knew exactly where the medical supply shop was. He walked in, slammed gold on the counter, and growled at the young woman behind said counter.

"Get me all the Magic potions this can afford." She gulped and took the money, counting it briefly before running into the back. She came back with eight vials of a dark red liquid. He took them and immediatly drank two. He felt his magic rush into him, and he ran out, making his way back to Mimi's house. He ran in the door, only stopping when he was right beside mimi. He put his hand on her arm, which was all he could get to without seeming yiffy, and his energy flowed back into his hand, wrapping around her body again. He heard a few pops, but that was it. "I hope that's all the damage..." He muttered. She'd be exhausted for the next few hours if he'd done everything right, but there was no worry about her dying without him being able to do something.

Time yawned hearing some senseless yelling out in the living room. She was sleeping under Mimi's bed seeing she wasn't here he could sleep were he wanted. He crawled out from under the bed then stretched out like any cat after taking a nap. His tail crackled and he padded out into the living room. He saw someone run out of the house but didn't take much notice. He saw his owner on his couch. Well he never paid for it but he saw it as his couch. "and she tells me not to sleep on HER bed" He muttered.

Time looked at his owner wondering why she would die. She never got badly injured at a Battle Royal. Well she looked ok so he crawled under the couch and fell asleep, only to wake up as her head someone enter the house several minutes later. He crawled back out and looked the fox.

His ears flattened back "I told her not to bring anymore homeless animals into this house" He hissed his flaming tail flickered angrily. "Now get your paws off my owner!!!" He pointed his nose to the door, he didn't want this fox ruining his owners life. After all the guys that tried to get sweet on her he wasn't going to stand for another one.

Mimi seemed to be relaxed and her breathing was back to normal. Well everything was better that's to the fox but Time didn't know that and he didn't care.

Solaris ignored the cat, for the most part. He said only 5 words. "Shut up you little nuisance." He growled, trying to concentrate on his magic. He was now probing her body with his magic, looking for any other life-threatening damage. Finding none, he sighed and fell on his back. "Thought I was gonna lose her..." He muttered, closing his eyes. He shook himself when he realized he was about to doze off. "I still have to fix the door." He growled, standing up and walking to the door. He was lucky, he'd just torn up the frame. He placed the broken part back where it belonged and repaired it with magic. Then he closed the door and walked over to Mimi.

"Sleep well..." He whispered, licking her cheek. Then he stood straight and arched his back, listening to the bones pop. "No sleep for about two days..." He groaned, forgetting completly that the cat was there. "Not something I'd like to try again." He sighed and sat down, leaning against the couch. He sighed as his mind fogged, then went black as he fell asleep. 'Wake up soon...' was his last thought before he was out.

Solaris whimpered as he was forced to pull the bulky plow across the small field. The heat was unbearable, and his legs were about to give out. He glared at the house he'd been living in. Then he dropped the plow, walking into the house. "What are you doing inside?! I told you you're not allowed in until that whole field is plowed!" A voice roared from his right. He ignored it, walking to his room and grabbing his guns, gun holsters, knife, flight jacket, pants and pack.

"I said get back out there!" The man roared behind him. A shot rang out, and a line of blood appeared on his cheek. Then Sol sneared.

"Seeya, DAD."

Then he jumped backward, out the window. He landed on the ground and took off, ignoring the shouts of his "Father".

Time hissed at the fox. "I said get out of here! Sleep outside you street animal!" He demanded but saw the fox was already asleep. He growled and jumping onto the couch. He landed by his owner's feet and curled up and fell asleep like everyone else.

Mimi was glad that nightmare was over. When she thought was going to die, She had been leashed and was being dragged towards a bright light by a boney old man. She couldn't fight back because she was too weak. Well the old man went away and the leash was gone also. Now her dreams where the same. Her playing fetch with a boy. This was the normal dream, She did have a different dream every now and then but she as rarely haunted by her past.

Time woke up after an hour passed. "Food" He yawned as he padded over to the kitchen. His owner had left more then enough cat food in a giant bowl. Just so he wouldn't starve. Well he probably wouldn't starve but there would be a lot of complaining. Once he ate his fill he went back to the couch and slept in the same spot.

Mimi ran across the field her eyes seemed to be beaming with joy. Flying in the air above her was a stick. Once it was in reach she jumped into the air and grabbed it much like a dog, then running back. She slowed her pace to see the boy was no longer there. Her ears lopped and she whimpered, dropping the stick. There was no trace of the boy. She padded around the open field and sniffed the ground trying to find the boy who she had been playing with. She gave up when his scent had disappeared. She let out a sigh and turned around. In seconds everything changed. In front of her was a giant petrified tree. This was another common visitor in her dreams.

She looked at the dead tree. She knew she wasn't in Aria, when she had dreams about the tree the first few times she had traveled all of aria, even Madrigal. There where trees like the one in her dream. Her dream only had one tree unlike Madrigal. She always wondered if the tree was important but she would never know.

Sol awoke about four hours later, yawning and stretching. "That was a good nap, despite not having a pillow... Or a bed..." Sighing, he stood up and popped his back again. Looking at mimi, he smiled and unzipped his jacket, slipping it off of her. He licked her cheek and slipped the jacket on, leaving it unzipped. He looked at the cat and had the urge to kick it through the air. But he didn't, figuring he'd either warm up to him or at least begin to tolerate him. His stomach growled fiercly, reminding him he hadn't eaten for at least 3 days. He stood for a few moments, then, with a sigh, walked to the fridge. He'd replace the food he ate, with interest. He opened it and looked in, and grabbed a turkey drumstick. He filled a glass with water and walked back into the living room. Sitting down where he'd slept, he took a big bite of turkey, swollowing it without chewing. He took another bite, swollowed, and took a drink of water. He smiled deviously and poured just a little water on the fire cat, then drank it all so that it's contents were unknown. He bit off another chunk of turkey and swollowed it, sighing contentedly as his stomach was filled at last. Hey, just because he could go for days without food didn't mean he didn't enjoy the feeling of being full. He finished off the drumstick and retrieved another, finishing it off shortly. Then he lay by the couch, lightly snoozing, waiting for Mimi to wake up. He hoped she would wake up soon. He didn't want to leave her alone, even in her own house.

Mimi didn't really care if Solaris took anything... well almost anything. If he walked out with stuff from her room she might get upset. Besides Time stole from the fridge all the time. Mimi had found the boy she was playing with in her dream. So she was fairly happy to be running after a stick.

Time didn't notice the drops of water. It did take some of his energy but nothing big. Kick Time in a river then he would be in some trouble. He just yawned still asleep. Well that's what Time did, sleep, eat, and heat the water.

Mimi woke up a little over 30 minutes later. She yawned stretching out her arm. She looked around a bit dazed. This wasn't any mountain and the air wasn't as fresh. Her ears picked up as soon as she realized she wasn't at the Battle Royal anymore. "What am I doing home...?" She asked but was quiet about it seeing time was asleep. She noticed that Sol was here. She smiled as she got off the couch and sat down next to him and started to nibble on his ear.

"I guess you brought me back?" She asked tugging on his ear a bit. She remembered being beaten... kind of wished she didn't. Painful things aren't fun to remember. Well in the end it was worth going up there. She met a nice fox. She wrapped her tail around him murring lightly just to show she wasn't mad at him.

Sol blinked slowly, groggily, when Mimi sat down beside him. For a second he thought he was dreaming. But he soon dismissed that thought and murred, wrapping his tail around her's. He smiled and nuzzled her. "Yeah, I did. It was either pull you out or let you die. Oh, and your firecat doesn't seem to like me." he said, giving Time a nasty look. Then he nuzzled her again, licking her cheek. "I'm sorry. I don't even know him but I wanna throw him through a window." He smiled. "Don't worry. I won't." He sighed, glaring at the cat, then ran his hand down her back, pressing gently along her spine. "Tell you what. If you tell me a way to shut him up without punting him to the other side of Diadem, then I won't punt." He rubbed on a kinked muscle he found and continued on down. He was about halfway down her back. He pressed in on her spine, then continued down, searching out any more kinks.

He smiled. "Does that feel good?" He asked, tapping her spine with a knuckle, softly. "if it doesn't I'll stop." He closed his eyes and just sat there, murring lightly, rubbing her back and breathing in her scent. Which was almost impossable not to do, seeing as her scent was all over the place. He suddenly felt like he didn't want to leave. He didn't want to leave the little house that felt so comfortable. He moved a little closer to her, wanting to be as close to her as he could. "Um... You don't mind if I stay here for a little while, do you? I'm sort of low on money. I spent most of my money on the entrance fee."

Mimi laughed lightly. "Just ignore the cat... he seems to get along with people if they don't pay attention to him." She told him as she murred lightly from the massage. Well she didn't get them often. She nibbled on his ear a bit more before she stopped. Her ears picked up. "Well thanks for getting me out of there..." she told him as she nuzzled his chest then licked his cheek.

Time yawned getting up. Is tail flickered as she looked at his owner. "Blame yourself when he leaves..." Time yawned. He guessed he wouldn't stay long. Probably use her then leave, just like everyone else. He left the house using the kitty door.

Mimi ignored what Time said like normal. Well she would when she was with someone. "Don't worry you can stay... but your going to have to sleep with Time. The only other bed in this house is in my room." She was surprised that a fox of his skills didn't have a house. She licked his cheek a few more times then continued on.

"I might love you but I don't think its smart to be sleeping in the same bed, yet." Well the last thing she wanted was to make another mistake about letting someone sleep with her. She got lucky that she never had cubs from all her mistakes. Then again luck doesn't last.

She yawned her eyes closed for a second. She was wondering if he was willing to sleep on the same couch as Time. The house she lived in had an extra three rooms, Mimi never used him and kept forgetting to put guest beds in there.

Sol blinked when the cat got up. He shrugged at the words. Why would he leave Mimi? "Don't expect me to leave mimi any time soon, firebutt." Well, he didn't know it's name and he wasn't about to stay silent. He nuzzled mimi, pausing when she spoke. "So his name's Time?" He pretended to think over it for a minute. Then he smiled and licked her cheek. "I can take it. Don't know about Time, but I can stand it." He nuzzled her. "Thanks. I owe you one. And you won't regret it." He smiled and massaged out another kink. 'So, she has a fire cat named Time, who doesn't seem to like any guy who spends any time with her? Well.... That's not exactly what I imagined...'

He thought, looking out the window at the sky. 'That could be a complication, too, if he starts trying more than words to seperate us.' He paused, surprised at what he was thinking at that moment. 'But,' he thought, just to erase the thought. 'He doesn't appear to be a threat to me, and surely he wouldn't hurt mimi. Guess I'll have to put up with him and hope.' That done he came back to the present. He nuzzled mimi and smiled. "Don't worry." He said, "I'm not going to leave you. I'll stay with you either until I die or the world dies." He didn't know why he said that, because the world wouldn't die. Especially any time soon. But he'd said it already, and it was his promise. His promise to stay with her until the end.

And this fox always keeps his promises.

Mimi was glad to hear that he wasn't going to leave. She nibbled his ear a bit, he seemed like a good guy so far. Well a great fox for the matter. Well only time could tell if things could work out. Well they had there alone time but Mimi wasn't going to do anything yet.

Time was out and about in the city, but he was padded along alley ways and building tops. Time enjoyed walks it made his troubles go away but he was worried for his owner. What if this fox was another fake? It was bothering him dearly. He didn't see his owner as anything special but he felt it was his job to make sure she didn't get hurt.

Mimi snuggled him a bit more before getting up. She headed over to the kitchen and pulled out some bread from the pantry and lunch meat from the fridge. She made herself was a quick sandwich. Then got a glass of water. She only had water to drink at the Battle Royal. Well she was hungry.

Sol watched her get up and smiled. Then he stood and walked to the window, looking out and taking in the sights. There wasn't really anything to see of Diadem, but he was looking up, at the sun. He smiled and opened the door, walking outa few feet and just standing there, looking at the sky with his hands in his jacket pockets. His fur almost glowed in the direct sunlight. He sighed, smile still on his lips, and walked back in, closing the door behind him. He wondered if Mimi knew just how lucky she was to have a home of any kind. He didn't mostly because he never managed to keep all his money with him. He sighed, now wondering if she knew what she was missing. 'Does she know about the stars, about how their light feels?' He wondered, referring to nights of the new moon, when stars were the only source of light. 'Does she know how the moon's light feels during it's cycle?' He wondered, sitting on the couch and staring out into space. "Does she understand what she's missing...?" He wondered aloud, watching a child run past the house outside, pursuing a ball his friend had kicked. Sol smiled. 'Then again, I never really understood cities that well. I didn't see why people would want to live so close together. I preferred to have plenty of space around me. Trees to hide behind, fresh air to fill my lungs, and soft grass to sleep on.'

He sighed, wondering if he'd miss the wide-open spaces. 'If Mimi wants to stay, then I'll stay.' He thought firmly.

Mimi had lived out in the open for a while, down at the Highlands. She enjoyed the open space, being able to run with nothing to stop her. Then again the city had its benefits. Kate and Sparing competitions, People from all around would come. It was perfect to see what kind of talent was out there. The pit fighting paid extremely well, even if she could live a work free life out in the highlands, hunt her own food, and live in peace. Well that was boring or it would get boring. Besides money seemed like a need, Clothes, blankest, knickknacks, and items what she would not make herself.

Mimi brought her food to a small kitchen table. It was fairly small, about the size of something if a coffee shop. Well Mimi lived alone so she never needed a large table. Just big enough for herself, maybe an extra person. Mimi ate her sandwich quickly but tried to keep her manners at the same time. She put the dish in the sink along with the glass of water. She would wash it later.

Her ears flickered as she went back to the couch. She sat down for a second, then got up. She guessed that Time wasn't happy that she was using his couch. Then again she did it all the time. Well she would rather keep him happy. Time might be the biggest royal pain but he had his moments where he was useful.

She headed over to her room and jumped onto her bed and rolled over to her back. Her tail was wagging. She looked at the ceiling for a couple seconds then over to her wall decorated with weapons.Sol smiled as he watched mimi walk through the room and into her room. He'd tried, successfully, not to go into her room in an attempt not to invade her personal space. But he almost relented now, since Mimi was in there. Instead he took a few deep breaths and walked back outside. He couldn't help himself.

It was either Mimi's room or outdoors. He sat down near the door and watched the kids play, his mind buzzing. It was like memories were there that shouldn't be. From long ago. From before he was alive. He groaned, holding his head. He'd won every fight he got into, even against his stronger brother. He'd survived things he shouldn't have been able to. Solaris yelped as a pain lanced through his mind, then slumped down.

The sound of children laughing made the fox sick. He watched them run around with reckless abandon. They were humans, and easy prey. The adult fox sneared, pulling a sword from it's sheath on his belt. It wasn't very long, but it was sharp and the blade was lined with poison. The village was small, and this was probably the only kits that they had. He was here to kill, and he was going to. Starting with the young pups. He rushed foreward out of the shadows, his blade coming down hard, the point burrowing through flesh and tissue. He felt himself smile as he pulled out of the child, swinging around and nicking another kid. He would die soon enough. He swung his blade around and buried it in the side of a little girl, cutting off her arm in the process. He roared with laughter at the slaughter.

Off to the side a small cage of four golden fox kits watched this with horrer and a kind of abstract fascination. This was what they were meant to do?

Sol gasped as he awoke, panting. He looked at the children, who were still playing, then at the sky. It was getting dark. How long had he been out? Was it just a dream? It WAS just a dream, right? But he'd never had a dream so gruesom. Shivering, he walked inside. He leaned on the doorway for a few moments as a wave of nausea hit him. He almost threw up, but managed to hold it in. He stumbled to the couch and callapsed. What the hell?!

Mimi had fallen asleep while she was in her room. She didn't want to bother Solaris an she was just exhausted even with that nap she had taken before. She was hidden under the blankets which was odd but it was so cold. She didn't know why she felt so cold.

Time headed back into the house while Sol was standing by the door. He didn't take much notice of the fox as he headed over to the kitchen and ate what was left in his flow bowl. Then heading over to Mimi's room checking up on her. She looked like she was just fine so there was nothing to worry about. When he was heading back to the living room he saw that fox on his couch. Well he would have to live with t. Besides if thins went like they normally did. That fox would probably just sleep in Mimi's room for the heck of it.

Mimi had the same dream she normally did. Her playing fetch with a boy, nothing special. She woke up about an hour after Sol did. By now Time was asleep on the couch again. Mimi yawned as she puched the blankets off. She didn't feel deathly cold anymore so she yawned again before getting off her bed and padding over to the bath room, to straighten out her fur and take care of some busyness while she was n there before walking out.

She looked around the house seeing Time asleep on the couch. She headed over to the kitchen getting a glass of water.

Sol's head spun, his stomach ached, and he could barely see. He felt the cat jump on the couch, and a while later felt mimi walk through the room. He groaned. The last thing he wanted was to be in this state and for mimi to notice. But the dream kept replaying itself in his head. He held his head in his hands, squeazing his eyes shut. But that just made it seem even more real, and he opened his eyes and forced them to stay open. His whole body started to ache, and he started seeing the children being killed in the living room. "Damnit..." He moaned, standing up and stumbling foreward. The room spun, throwing him off balance. He fell to the floor, gasping. He forced himself to his feet.

'You were meant to kill! You know you love it! You don't need mimi, you just need your guns, knife, and plenty of victims!' A voice told him in his head. He gasped in mental pain that felt so real it was almost physical.

He stumbled foreward blindly, head swimming.

"I wasn't meant to kill!" He gasped aloud.

'Oh, come now! You love to kill! You love to see the blood boil from your victims!'

"No! I don't! I don't want to kill!"

'Please, you know you do. Oh, I know the perfect target! Why don't you kill mimi?'

"Kill... Mimi?! No! Get out of my head!" He gasped, knowing he was about to see the turkey he'd eaten again. One trembling hand lowered to his handgun, drawing it slowly.

'Then why are you getting your gun? Why? Do you just want to see her reaction?'

"I'm not drawing my gun! Am I...? Am... Am I going mad?!"

He raised his gun slowly, drawing a bead on Mimi's head. 'Do it... Pull the trigger! Fire! Kill her! Prove you don't need her!'

He gasped, his hand shaking violently. The gun went off, the bullet hissing just past mimi. 'You missed! How could you miss?! You ca.....s so e..... Can you even h...... DON'T PUSH ME AWAY!' Sol dropped the gun and fell to his knees, gasping. He squeazed his eyes closed and tried to push it down, but this time it wouldn't be stopped.

He wretched. As soon as the stream stopped he tried to pull in a breath, but it was interrupted by another wretch. But this one stopped almost instantly, letting him breathe.

"He's.... Gone.... I'm sorry..." He gasped and stood again, eyes open but completly blind. he stumbled out of the kitchen. "What's.... Going on....?! I didn't kill those kids... I was barely a kit..... It was him..... He.... He killed them all........" He fell to his knees again. The nausea was leaving him, leaving him exhausted. "Mimi....." He fell to his side, panting. Darkness crowded his vision.

"I.... Didn't mean.... To shoot...." He passed out, body still trembling. 'What happened?' he wondered in his unconcious state. 'Who was that talking to me? Was.... Was I really meant to... To kill? No! I'm not a killer! That voice! It made me! I don't want to hurt mimi! I couldn't!' His thoughts slowly tapered out and dissappeared, leaving him to sleep. And dream. This time it wasn't a murder dream but one he had commonly. His body slowly stopped trembling.
