Chapter 6 of: Not your Average School Year

It was the day of Jamey's 6th birthday. Streamers everywhere, balloons galore, and kids running around screaming their lungs out having a great time. There was a clown as was tradition at a child's party. He was a rather plump otter that wreaked of alcohol and despair. It was Jamey's big day and he was having the time of his life. You see the cute fox wasn't always shy as he is in the present time. When he was younger he was a very extroverted child, making friends here and there. Even talking to strangers when he was told not to. Nothing could put a damper on Jamey's birthday, he had his best friend Ricky with him the whole time. Ricky was another young fox that lived down the street from Jamey. They had been together since they were 2 years old. They were stuck like glue everywhere they went, especially at Jamey's party. Jamey spent the whole time either playing In the bounce house, running around the yard with the other kids, or dancing to the newly released Kidz Bop CD. Around 5 in the afternoon the party was winding down, all the little kids exhausted from the days festivities. It was time to blow out the cake, a beautiful 2 layer vanilla cake decorated with all of Jamey's favorite superheroes. Jamey's mother was right beside him when everyone sang him happy birthday with the most enthusiasm you'd ever hear. Jamey was in a state of bliss. He was the happiest child ever. He blew out the candles with all of his breathe, wishing that all his birthdays could be as fun and exciting. After blowing out the candles his mom began to cut the cake and gave Jamey the first slice.

"Mommy can I get a piece for Daddy he's been in his room for a long time he might be hungry" said Jamey with the biggest smile you'd ever see.

"Sure baby" said Jamey's mother, Lea, handing him the slice of cake.

Jamey ran as fast as he could to his parents room, unable to wait to eat his cake with his father. He Threw the door open and stopped in his tracks.

That was the day his father passed away, on his 6th Birthday. He couldn't believe what he saw that day. His mother called 911 and tried to resuscitate him. She forgot to take Jamey out of the room and he saw every little part of his fathers death. After 5 minutes of his mothers fruitless efforts the EMTs came. They did the best they could, but in the end it wasn't enough.

They rolled his father out of the house on a gurney, squeaking every time the wheels rolled. The last time Jamey saw his father was when they were zipping up his body bag. His face lifeless, fur dull and matted all over. Since that day Jamey hasn't been able to get that image out of his head. He would always remember his father how he was. The fun loving fox, that was always laughing and cracking jokes. His father lived his life to the fullest doing the best to give Jamey and his mother everything they wanted and to be able to live comfortably. But at the end of the day that image of his father in the body bag still lingered, haunting him.

Since that day Jamey was never the same. Jamey became a shy little fox. He wasn't as full of life as he once was. He didn't want to leave the house or talk to anyone. All he wanted to do was hide in his room and cry. Because of Jamey's seclusion he began digging himself into a whole that was difficult to get out of. He lost most of his friends, but what hurt the most was losing Ricky. Jamey wouldn't come over anymore and they would barely talk. Ricky moved on and became best friends with his next door neighbor, Brian. Sometimes Jamey regrets losing himself after his fathers death, losing everything, but the pain of losing the most important part of his life destroyed the fox.

Jamey was at the breaking point when he saw his mother face down on the floor, the same spot where his father died. Jamey didn't know what to do and ran to the kitchen. He dashed for the phone and fumbled with they keys, eventually being able to dial 911 successfully.

"911, what is your emergency?"

"MY MOM IS ON THE FLOOR, UNCONSCIOUS" said Jamey screaming into the phone, unable to control his voice, panting.

"Calm down sir, what is your address? We will send an ambulance to your home as soon as possible"

"Ummm... 2234 S-Sherley-y P-P-Place... It's a house"

"Alright we will send someone out there right away"

Jamey put the phone down and ran to his mother. She was still on the floor, face down. Jamey quickly flipped her onto her back, laying her head in a throw pillow.

Her face was expressionless, blank. He did the first thing he was taught on his 6th birthday. Jamey checked if she was breathing, putting his finger up to her nose. After 3 seconds he felt her breath and breathed a sigh of relief. Jamey didn't know how this could've happened but he didn't want to relive his 6th birthday.

He sat by her side, stroking her head fur gently, quietly crying. Jamey loved his mother with all his heart. She was all he had left. After his father passed away, his mother was all he had. She was his rock after his fathers passing.

Jamey kissed his mothers forehead gently, Tears pouring.

"I love you Mommy............ Oh please god protect my mother, why does this have to happen to us!"

He shut his eyes and just sat there with his mother waiting for the ambulance. He tried to keep up his spirits by remembering all the good times they've had. The time they went to the bowling alley and Jamey got 2 spares, when they went to the ice cream parlor with his dad and had ice cream sundaes with hot fudge and whipped cream, or the day they all went to the beach and made sand castles and swam in the warm ocean water. Jamey was in his own little world when the EMTs came running in.

When they approached his mother Jamey opened his eyes and stepped aside, allowing the EMTs to do there job.

They put her onto the gurney and gave her oxygen. They tried to wake her up, with all their might.

"Mrs. Knight? Mrs. Knight can you hear me?" Said one of the EMTs, a tiger, trying to get his mother to wake up and respond. The tiger's efforts were useless though.

She was still unconscious while they were wheeling her out of the room. Jamey didn't know what was going to happen. Everything he saw was just a blur to him. He felt like he couldn't control his body and was just going through the motions.

He walked along the gurney that was taking her into the ambulance. He kept looking at his mother, still unconscious and still. He didn't know what god was going to do from here, but he was fearing the worst.

As they were putting her into the ambulance Jamey saw her eyes open. She looked at him, her eyes piercing through him. Jamey stood beside her and held her hands that were freezing. She looked up at him with a weak smile.

"Jamey" she said her voice weak

"Y-yes mom"

"I need to...." She suddenly became silent. She looked up at the roof of the ambulance, silent.

"Mom! Mom! What did you need to tell me?!"

She suddenly went unconscious.

"Mom! Wake up Mom!" Screamed Jamey, frantically shaking the rails of the gurney

One of the other EMTs, a rather large bull, grabbed Jamey and pulled him out of the ambulance

"What are you doing! I need to be with my mom!" Jamey tried to get back into the ambulance, clawing at the bull, but his efforts were in vain. The large bull was made of stone and blocked his path.

"I'm sorry son you have to stay here. We need to take your mom to the hospital immediately. Do you want us to call someone to be with you?"

"No I'm fine" Jamey sat on the curb, crying. He just wanted to disappear. To run off somewhere and forget everything.

The bull closed up the ambulance and as they quickly sped off Jamey caught a glimpse of his mother as they left with the same dull fur as his father had the day he passed.

Jamey just sat there balling his eyes out. He couldn't move. He didn't know what to do with himself.

An hour passed on the curb with Jamey still there, staring off into the distance. As he was about to get up he felt a hand on his shoulder. It was a familiar touch that was comforting, soothing. He knew who's hand it was and as he looked up he saw the eyes and fur of Someone who truly loved him. Jamey stood up slowly and knew everything was going to be alright, that all the worries in life were going to be just dust in the wind.
