#18 of The Draconian Story

War Potential

In the real world, at the same time when Orozco supported Richard to have some rest, Juagar was wandering around feeling envious watching many of the new recruits training in any kind of weapons except crossbows, and even the more primitive version, the bow and arrow, was delightfully full. This made him like an unemployed draconian watching the job potentials he never could have. He sighed and walked to Post 44. In the way, he saw Orozco coming out from the Post, so Juagar could only say he was resting. Inside, at the second floor where he usually dozed off when he had nothing to do, he saw Richard sleeping soundly on one of the beds. Watching the golden draconian sleeping felt weird, but then he smiled a little when he saw how funny he was when he was sleeping, and somehow equivalent to canine's. Juagar couldn't sleep with so many loud voices around him, so he went to the mess hall, made a coffee, and turned on the television, watching the news.

"Okay, now we're back to the Weather Forecast on DBC News. For the rest of the week we will be facing a hot sunny day where you all can go to the beach for a relaxing sun-bath for your scales. The next week will have a windy day with sun shining all day, and the big potential on rain on the second day. This is the Weather Forecast...on DBC News."

The news wasn't that good, and of course it didn't include the problems in Milsteir. Though the town had a good connection with the capital, somehow anything happened in the town never reached the capital, though supplies still came so this town wouldn't be a bad place for a living. Feeling bored, he walked outside and unintentionally, into the forest where he saw the rock. The rock, again, wasn't cleaned, and the foods Andreas left were still there, polluting the forest. Juagar then sat on the rock, watching the sky, and soon dozed off.

He woke up when Andreas was beside him and shaking him up, making him fell to the grass, surprised. He didn't carry any weapons, but he knew Andreas wouldn't hurt him.

"W...what with the sudden appearance, Andreas?" asked Juagar with a nervous smile.

"What are you doing sleeping here like a slacker, amigo? Aren't you supposed to be training many of your recruits? I can hear their chatting from here."

"There's no interest in crossbows," replied Juagar sad. "I feel like I'm unemployed, and like a drake going high, man. I really don't like this."

"Relax amigo. At least nothing about the Dragnets happens, right? There's peace, calm...well, not calm, especially about that town of yours you describe."

Juagar chuckled a little, "Uh, well, I grew fond to it."

"You can't lie through your tone, amigo," said Andreas with a grin, exposing his otherwise yellow teeth. When he turned towards his own nation to go back, Juagar asked, "Hey, when will you come here again? Also, we only met for around five minutes or so today, so, you can consider being longer, right?"

"I really can't, actually. Though I had a free job, I still need to investigate further on the Dragnets operating in Northorno. I'm currently interrogating a male draconian which was a mole in our investigation. Well, he won't escape again, though. He escaped once."

"Oh...we also had a similar kind of...situation...and those two are...somehow the best interrogator...but they're nasty."

"Not really to me, though. Usual scene. Nothing weird," said Andreas short before he turned his body toward Northorno while saying goodbye to Juagar, which his best friend waved his scaled hand for. Though the dark green draconian knew nothing's weird for now, the attack on the restaurant some days before could be a warning that something worse than the planned gang war was on the way, and of course, if this happened, there would be death everywhere, including his friends.

He returned shortly after stretching his body. He still yawned because of the after effect from his nap. Back to the camp, though, he saw that Richard hadn't wakened up yet. Maybe he was too exhausted so he decided to sleep longer. It's just half an hour since Juagar left the headquarters, so maybe he would wake up shortly afterwards.

It was around lunch time, so the activities ceased outdoor, but increased indoor. It started to become so noisy that the voice of the draconians having a break reached the usually calm upstairs of Post 44.

Half an hour later, when Juagar realized he was so bored that he was scratching the pole near him with his claws, Richard woke up, feeling dizzy, and he somehow watching his surroundings, then his claws. He looked confused, like someone who hadn't seen himself for ages.

"Hey, man, can't sleep at the ruckus below?" said Juagar approaching him. "We can eat outside. We're senior Guards after all."

"J...Juagar, h...how long did I sleep?"

"I don't know. Maybe an hour ago, or some hours more...I can't tell."

"O...oh. Can I have a glass of water? I'm thirsty."

Juagar turned to a dispenser, pouring down a glass of fresh water, while saying, "You know, you look like someone who hadn't been awake for eons, Richard. You look very beaten up. Even I don't know how long you slept, man."

"I...was having the longest dream I've ever dreamed of. Shit, that was close."

"Having issues with nightmares aside from mutation issues, huh?"

"I really need to know what that means."

"You'll get to know it soon enough."

Downstairs, when they both went out from the Post joining the crowd which was strangely formed by something, Richard's senses went back when he got a scent of blood in the middle of the crowd. Pushing himself through the crowd, he realized there was a draconian's body, bathed in fresh blood after being rained by bullets.

"Bullets..."

"Who did this nasty job?"

"It's not us, but our enemies."

"How do you know from how he was killed?"

Richard suddenly pulled his pistol and shot one random draconian right at his leg. He roared and pulled his knife while falling, trying to kill Richard. But the half-dragon managed to catch his attack before it cut through his head. Richard subdued the draconian, with surprised look from the others.

"Richard! That's our men!"

"No, he isn't! Juagar, behind you!"

Juagar reacted as sudden as Richard's warning. He pulled Richard's gun from his claws and shot aimlessly toward an assailant trying to cut him into half with a sword. The assailant was caught in surprise that he died vainly watching how the bullets from the pistol pierced him one by one.

"Shit! I'm not good at pistols! I'm wasting the bullets!"

"They have been inside our side for a long time!" exclaimed Richard. "Now we can't make any difference between friends and foe!"

"So this is their plan when they're idle! They want to open the borderlines so the troops from the other side can go in and wrecking this town, then invading Apachia!"

Richard ran toward Post 44, and found out that most of the bullets in there had been emptied by his comrades. Now, because he knew no one could be trusted, he could only say two sides had taken their bullets with them, leaving none behind, in a massacre that was supposed to be stopped. Richard growled in anger, believing that the Dragnets almost won...

"Richard! Nobody in Post 44 is enemies!" said Juagar. "The one you killed is a new recruit!"

"No! We have to stop them without killing our men! But then...we can't trust anyone."

"You can be trusted, Richard," said Juagar with a grin. "You don't know anything about the problem, you're not a draconian, and you aren't from this world! You're not suspicious. Everyone knows it."

Richard grinned back, feeling that he had friends at his side. He knew he hadn't known many of them, but they had known him. So if they went out, they would be trying to kill him as the one trying to stop their plan in illegal weapon business. Running out, he drew his sword, now feeling very rejuvenated after the almost forever draconic training he got from Engrak to control his own emotion. Now, mentally intelligent, he ran toward the fighting front, as a dragon, not a human.
