This was my first longer story that I did for my sci-fi class, this was at least 10 pages total since there was no limit on how the story could be. Sorry if the paragraphs look funny, entering the text on here is always hassel. hope you enjoy

Dr. Corvuskovich looked at the alien dragon body before him then at the paralyzed human soldier in the room next to him. He pondered if this experiment would give this soldier his life back and if did, would this lead to life back into civilization, or would lead to psychotic break. This all started on the newly discovered planet Draconia, where a civil war had broken out between an extreme rebel group (whose name cannot be pronounced in the English language) and a peace keeping kingdom called Phonixia with its king, Draguunus as its rightful ruler. What started this war? It all started when a group of space exploring humans landed on Draconia, well more like crashed landed.

The explorers had lost control of their ship and had no choice to land on this unknown planet at the time and when they had crashed their ship into a grassy plane; they were immediately surrounded by the kingdom's soldiers. Once captured, they were brought before the Draconian king and were given a device that allowed them to speak and hear the language of the Draconia. All four explorers explained to King Draguunus that they were on a space exploration expedition and their landing was an accident and explained where they were from and what Earth was like. The King then became curious and excited, asking the explores if possible to make a peace treaty with Earth explaining that he wanted get to know more of Earth and learn the different cultures. It had become clear that the Draconian King was a seeker of knowledge and the explorers gained a newfound respect for this king. The explores explained that they themselves could not make the treaty but if the Draconians brought them back to Earth, peace treated with the United Nations would be possible. Once the explorers had been brought back the United Nations wasted no time in making treaty with the new alien planet. However there were those who opposed this treaty, mainly a group of extremist Draconians who felt that humans were weak and that Earth be invaded and conquered. Eventually this rebellious group started a civil war, launching an attack on Phonixia. While the kingdom had excelled in areas of technology and weaponry, there was a lack of skill in using weapons. Earth responded by sending not only troops and weapons on massive space ships but also the top Generals and Drill Sergeants; the human soldiers held back the rebellion while the Draconian soldiers were properly trained by the Drill Sergeants. Once that had been accomplished the war quickly ended, with a trained Marine sniper taking out the leader of the rebellion but not without a cost involving severe paralysis due to explosion occurring next to him after he had taken the shot along with a draconian soldier who tried shielding the sniper from the blast but ended up in an deep coma.

"Well doctor, can it be done?" asked Rinkar, the Draconian kingdom's head doctor. Corvuskovich looked at the two bodies before him, one being the paralyzed Marine, and the other, the vegetative body of the draconian warrior who saved the Marine's life. Since the Draconian king knew that there was no way for the Draconian warrior to live again, he asked the leaders of Earth if there was way to give the Marine sniper a second chance of living fully by transferring his mind into the draconian warrior who saved him. The king offered his best doctors and scientist to help make this a possibility and the U. N. offered its best doctors in neurology and scientists who could help with process. Still with all of that, there no possibility that it would work.

"To be honest my friend, I am not so sure if it will work, too many things could go wrong in that we could lose both subjects" explained the middle aged doctor.

Dr. Heinrich Corvuskovich was the leader of this experiment. He had been born into a Russian family living in Germany; Heinrich excelled in the studies of technology in Berlin, then attending medical school in Russia with a major in Neurology. His greatest achievement was creating device for those who forget things easily in that plays back a recording in their mind of what they had planned to do. This was the main reason why he was chosen to head this project, being very specific on what calculations had to be made as well as what equipment would have to be made and ordered to make the experiment happen.

"This experiment will fail if we do not have the courage to even try it" replied Dr. Kenji Hideaki, one Japan's top neurologists. "Doubt is what leads on to failure in the first place, one must remove that doubt in order to try new things" continued the young doctor. Heinrich could not help chuckling at this.

"True my friend but as a scientist must consider the all possible outcomes for an experiment, both positives and negatives. For example this experiment, if gone right the young soldier here will be able to walk and live freely while having new body. However there several things could go wrong, such the both subject dying during the transfer, or even if the transfer is a success we have no idea of how much of a psychological impact this will have on the soldier's mind" explained Heinrich. "The soldier could go mad no matter how much therapy and psychiatric treatment he receives" wiping his brow while saying this.

"Yes that may happen but it is still worth a shot yes?" asked Rinkar. "As I have observed from the different cultures that your planet has to offer, I have noticed that when humans set their minds to something, even with certain odds against them, they still go through with it and that gives me courage and hope in this experiment" said the dragon, showing the fire in his eyes.

"Well then my friends, let us make history!" shouted Heinrich in his Russian accent, rousing excitement in all those working on this experiment. Preparations were fully complete, both subjects were ready and waiting, now all that was needed to do was activate the mind transfer machine. Everyone's hopes and dreams rested in this machine; as well as the life of the paralyzed Marine. Heinrich looked at the bodies that were a few feet away from him, and then looked back at the command console. Closing eyes, saying a quite prayer under his breath, he activated the machine. The machine glowed, showing the flow of electricity going from the generator to the machine itself, and Heinrich noticed that the transfer was already beginning even though the machine was not full power.

"Vitals are steady Dr. Corvuskovich!" yelled an American doctor, "Generators are holding steady!" yelled one of the technicians.

"It seems that all is well with the transfer" shouted Rinkar, "Don't celebrate just yet, we still have a ways to go my friend!" yelled Heinrich Corvuskovich. While the transfer was indeed flowing smoothly, only 35% had been completed. The next step was to increase the power a bit more to see how much quicker this transfer would be done. While Heinrich wanted this to be quick as possible, for the young Marine's safety, he did not want to jeopardize the Marine's life in the process.

"Increase power to 50% now!" yelled Heinrich, and immediately the mind transfer began to increase speed, with Heinrich watching the light flowing from the metal head band around the young Marine through the thick cable with the other end attached to another metal hand band around the alien dragon's head.

"Dr. Corvuskovich! Heart rate is increasing slowly! We have to lower the power now!" yelled the American doctor. "No!" yelled Heinrich "Keep it where it is, when the heart rates gets too high then we will lower it!" and with that he looked the overall progress of the transfer. 70% had been completed and this began to worry Heinrich. He wondered how much strain could the Marine's damaged body could take from this experiment, hoping that the strain would not kill the Marine in the process.

"Heart rate is at a dangerous high! We need to shut it down now!" yelled the American doctor once more.

"Lower the power to 30%! Do not shut down the machine or this will kill both subjects!" yelled Heinrich, slamming his fist onto the top part of the console. 95% of the transfer had been completed, which only aggravated Heinrich. After what it seemed like hours, the transfer was finally over. Heinrich ran over to alien dragon's body, slowly taking the metal headband off him and whispered to the alien dragon "Wake up Obadiah, time to wake up my young friend" and with that, the alien dragon began to stir.

Slowly opening his eyes, Obadiah Williams awakened from his deep sleep the first thing he noticed was a dragon like snout in front of his eyes. The snout followed him when he moved his head and then looked down, most of his body was covered in a hospital garment but saw that he was no longer human. His hands were instead dragon like hands with sharp like claws, his feet, much like his hands were also dragon like with much bigger claws.

"What, what has happened to me?!" asked Obadiah, now scared of his new body.

"Calm down Obadiah, your mind has been transferred into a new body, it was really the way for to live, your old body would have only last 3 months, after that you would have died" explained Heinrich.

"I, I remember now. I was given the option to either try living as a paralytic or partake in this experiment. Since I am alive and now thinking, I guess the experiment was a success right?" asked Obadiah.

"Well you could say that" said Heinrich, nervously rubbing his neck.

"What you mean?" asked Obadiah, now beginning to worry.

Sighing heavily, Doctor Corvuskovich looked straight at the now Draconian's face and said "While the transfer was a success, that success did not happen without consequences. Your human body did not survive the process, meaning there will be no way for you to ever return to it."

"What?!" roared Obadiah, causing everyone to jump in surprise and fear.

"I am sorry Obadiah, we took every precaution to prevent this but sadly your body was too damaged" sadly replied Heinrich.

Obadiah slowly got up from the table, nearly losing his balance when he tried to walk but manage to regain it quickly. This impressed Heinrich who believed that Obadiah would at least need a month to get fully accustomed to his new Draconian body, but now it seemed it would take less than a month for physical and mental therapy. If he had to guess, Heinrich believed that Obadiah military training may be playing a part in why Obadiah was adapting so quickly. The young marine sniper made his way towards his old body, gazing upon the cold, lifeless body, his former body with the eyes closed, scars everywhere on the chest, arms and legs due to the explosion. Then he noticed that his Marine tags were laying on top of the body's chest, picking them up and gazing into them, reading his name on them, his unit's name, and service number. Heinrich walked up to his side looking at Obadiah's face, trying to figure out what Obadiah was feeling.

"Do you need a moment alone my friend?" asked Heinrich, wanting to give the young soldier some comfort.

Taking a deep breath and sighing, he turned to the doctor and replied "No I am alright, thank you Doctor Corvuskovich, for everything you did to give me second chance at living."

"No my friend, don't thank just me thank everybody who made this all possible" replied Heinrich, smiling and everyone began clapping for the young Marine who was ready to begin living life once more.

"The worst is over my friend but now comes the challenge of being able to adapt to your new Draconian body, both physically and mentally" explained Heinrich. "While it will take time, maybe only month or less since it appears you have already begun to adapt well, however you will not be alone on this path, Rinkar from Draconia will be your therapist for this task. He will help you get use to your body, it won't be different from having a human body, but there are some extras you will have to get use to" Heinrich said, while chuckling.

"Yea I have noticed" said Obadiah looking back at his new wings and tail and noticed Rinkar approaching him.

"Fear not" replied the Draconian doctor, stretching his wings and flickering his tail, "I will be your guide as to how to live as a Draconian while maintaining your human personality" explained Rinkar.

"But first let us get you into something more appropriate for this training" said Rinkar and led Obadiah to another room.

Once there, Obadiah was fitted what appeared to be athletic clothing but much larger to accommodate his new large body as well as a holes for his tail and wings. Rinkar then led Obadiah outside into the nice cool summer air, with him taking in all the scenery around him and noticed that they were in a secluded mountain area, free from any distractions that would hinder the training.

"The first thing I am going to teach you is how to fly" said Rinkar. "While it may not seem necessary to you it is necessary to me that all Draconians learn how to fly" explained Rinkar in a serious tone.

Wow, I never knew Draconians took flying so seriously" replied Obadiah.

"Well not many do, mostly me because I can't stand the idea of one Draconian being bullied by other Draconians because he or she cannot fly. Everyone in the whole kingdom of Phonixia knows how much I stress this" explained Rinkar.

First Rinkar showed Obadiah how to properly move his wings since they were new appendages to him, then showed him how slowly get off the ground by jumping then flapping his wings slowly. Obadiah had trouble at first but quickly managed to hover off the ground in no time.

"Good, good! You are progressing fine my young Draconian friend. Tell me are you sure you have never flown before?" asked Rinkar jokingly.

Obadiah chuckled and replied "No I haven't but when I was a kid I always dreamed that I was flying through the air and love feeling the wind flow through me" saying this with a smile.

"Ah how powerful the dreams of child can be!" said Rinkar with excitement. "It is dreams like those that have led to many Draconians flying without much training and I can see that in you" Rinkar said proudly.

"Thank you, hearing that gives me hope that I can truly live again" said Obadiah showing the hope in his eyes.

Rinkar smiled and said to Obadiah "Let us continue then."

A month went by of not only flight training but also for Obadiah to learn how to control his new tail and re-learning basics such as eating and drinking. Also Obadiah had to learn to control his own strength and to also properly take care of his new dragon like body. Draconian hygiene was much delicate than human hygiene but Obadiah adapted well to all of training and therapy. The only thing that annoyed him most was the fact he would have to acquire new clothing that would not only fit him but also accommodate his wings and tail but at least he would not have worry about wearing shoes again. Once the training was completed, all those who partook in the experiment congratulated Obadiah and present him with a ceremonial Marine outfit for him to wear for the flight back home. The day finally came when Obadiah was able to go back to his home town where his family lived and where most of his unit lived as well, located in Arizona. Dr. Corvuskovich and Rinkar flew back with him in order to keep him company.

"You have done amazingly well my friend" said Heinrich, smiling proudly, patting Obadiah on his shoulder.

"Yes indeed, even though you were born a human and then transferred into a Draconian body, you have made one fine Draconian and for that I am proud of you" said Rinkar smiling.

"Thank you, both of you, I am alive and well thanks to the two of you. I may have died as a human, I came back as Draconian with a reason to live" said Obadiah. "Hey Rinkar can I ask you a question?"

"Sure" replied Rinkar. "What is it that you want to ask?"

"Well, is it possible, for me to, well you know, to visit your kingdom one day?" asked Obadiah.

Rinkar smiled and answered "Just say the word and I will see to it that you not only visit the kingdom but also experience the peace we have there. King Draguunus anxiously wants to meet you but when being a king, one has trouble finding time for such pleasantries" saying this while chuckling.

Soon they landed in Tuscon and Obadiah anxiously waited for the bay door to open Once it did, he, Dr. Corvuskovich and Rinkar stepped off the plane was greeted by Obadiah's family, friends and members of his sniper unit along with a few other Marines that were friends with Obadiah. All cheered as the three figures stepped off the military plane and before approaching the crowd, Obadiah looked up into the sky, watching other planes fly by he thought to himself "I have indeed been given a second chance."
