Chapter One

Leaving home and losing them.

The wind whipped and whirled as the weather turned for the worst. Snow cascaded down like a ripple of white torrents, spiraling and twisting in one wild motion. Cold bit at the fur like daggers and needles ready to tear at the flesh. Night slowly encroached upon the poor soul trapped in the blistering waste of winter.

The day was the anniversary of a new era. Time had passed in twenty turns around the sun. The word year had forever lost meaning from the old world to the new. An age of new creatures, of new beings of intelligence had come. Humans, Homo-Saipan, were obsolete. This was the age of, Homo-Animus, furry, the erect animal. There were still humans, but they were slowly dying off, or changing into the creatures they had helped create.

Twenty turns ago, was a world of war, of hate that destroyed the very fabric of civility. The world was lost to the nuclear monstrosity. The war was deathly; it had a high toll on the innocents in the animal world. While the animals cowered in fear the humans rampaged on. Ruin and decay tore at the earth, at the environment that was the blue planet.

Severe cold claimed the North American continent in one wild blast of ice and snow. The country of Russia was turned into grassland, and the farmlands now determined to feed the living creatures of Earth. The Sahara was once again reclaimed by the jungles it had lost many, many ages past. Few held memories of the world before the war, the few that did were once Human. In this new age they above all know to keep their silence about the past, for to be human, or once human, is a dangerous thing to be.

There was promise, just promise of a fix to the world's turmoil was made in one man, Marcus James. A scientist, once human, once proud and credited had the solution. At least he said he did, however the patience of the numbers was too great. He failed to provide the cure the earth needed in time for the masses to be satisfied.

The masses were not to be reasoned with. On the day of judgment James and his family were banished to the waste of the North Americas. Times were getting worse for the creatures of Earth, and the only one who was close to the solution was James, the man they had sent away. He held the answer and on a snowy day like the one outside their small house window, it seemed all hope was lost. Sadness seemed to grip the planet. The time of Earth seemed to be slipping, they seemed to be lost in all due reasons for why this was happening to their world, was lost.

The North American continent was on the brink of being uninhabitable. The warnings were sent out some ten years after the banishment of James to leave the wasteland or be lost forever. Even James and his family had been granted safe haven in the Sahara Rain Forest. They would be priority to be removed when it came to the extraction of the creatures of the Americas. Rumors of his answer discovered had traveled near and far.

James was sitting at the table scratching his white maw. Scrunching his nose the Polar Bear was in deep thought as he sat there. Crystal blue eyes lifted to look at the child at the window, his priority in the extraction, for the child was suffering the most. Ears falling back slowly he gave a light rumble in the back of his throat. Leaning back he continued to watch the child for a long while.

The child was green fleshed, green scaled to be precise. The poor dragoness was bundled up to the heights, never being able to adapt to the cold as they would have hoped. Emerald eyes looked out towards the window while her lizard tail coiled around her in an effort to keep warm. Wings folded on her back and tucked around her. Horns of golden glittered over her eye ridge and trailed down into the depths of the clothes over her torso and lower body. Talons of green peeking out from under the baggy pants as they curled to the cold seeping through the cracks of the house. She looked no more than eight or nine.

Her emerald eyes were dancing on the snow as it fell, her head canted to the side slowly while she sniffed at the air. A talon came up to the window as she leaned forwards. Slumping as she turned to look back at the Polar Bear curiously," When did they say they were gonna be back Papa?" A slight tone of worry on her maw as she held back her shivers and closing her eyes while they tingled up her spine and back down it.

The bear shifted and scratched at his maw again while considering the answer to give. Brows furrowing he took a deep breath. A eased mummer pushed from his lips," They said they were going to check the path Jamie, do not worry.." Slowly a gentile smile came over his maw to reassure her of everything being alright.

Jamie nodded and sighed in a low tone. Emerald eyes glimmering lightly back to the window while she laid back. There was a scratch at her nose while she whispered," I hope they're alright..." The young girl stood and pushed forwards towards the door to the stairs as she started to pace," Papa.. I'm gonna get things ready... I'm sure momma would have done the same."

James nodded and looked back towards the door. Another sigh left his maw before he spoke lightly," True. And don't worry Jamie... I'm sure they're fine." He couldn't handle her daughter acting so frantic in this way.

As Jamie made for the stairs there was a slam in the front door. Snow came crashing in as two figures stood there. One was pulling down a mask as he called out with a white maw," James we have to get out of here! The pass is closing and the lake is freezing over, if we don't go now we'll lose our bearings!" The fox's ears were tucked back into a cap as he looked from the stopped Jamie to James again.

The second figure took a deep drawn breath but kept silent. His bulky figure seemed to say enough for his kind. Wings of leather folded at his back and his own tail wrapped around his waist as he stood there on his hind legs. The maw of a dragon hidden as crimson eyes looked to the girl then to James," Your son is right, we have to go now Marcus." There was a low rumble with his voice as pointed over his shoulder," Once we get to the pass we may have to foot it out with the weather that is taking place. This is far too dangerous and we waited too long to leave."

Jamie turned and looked at the two animus as she shivered," Please, close the door, please... It's too cold!" Shivering like a rattle she slumped down more and then rushed up the stairs. She had to get warm. Pulling blankets, anything with the appropriate methods to be used in order to keep herself regulated. She had hardly managed to hold in her heat and warm herself or cool herself. She was a young dragon after all.

The elder dragon looked up at the stairs with a sigh before looking to James," We should have left earlier... We should have left at the first sign of her trouble. Damn it why did you wait!?" Eyes narrowed on the Polar Bear, even though the fox's paw came up to stop the male from lashing out.

"Enough, let's just get the hell out of here... Stephen get your sister so we can get out of here, make sure she's well wrapped up.." The Polar Bear stood as he packed a blue bag filled with booklets and data chips. His maw scrunched as he mumbled," Damon... Enough, she's going to be fine. Just fine. Do not worry we'll get her out of here. I know you see her as a daughter, but do not forget who is the father here."

The red dragon snorted and gave a light hiss as he looked away. He didn't want to see harm come to James or his family. Turning he muttered," We have to go, I'm going to make sure the essentials are already packed." With that said he moved out of the door, questioning the methods of the Polar Bear within. Something was amiss, this whole day didn't seem to set right with the dragon.

Jamie and Stephen came down the stairs moments later, the young dragoness seemed to be wrapped up beyond recognition. Emerald eyes peered from behind goggles while she held a blanket around her figure. There was a meek voice from behind three layers of masks," Ready Papa..." She was hardly cold anymore, but she still felt the cooler air.

The fox made for the door as he spoke," Dad, the roof is going, we have to leave now." His brow furrowed he rushed out the door while James nodded and set off towards Jamie.

James stopped and held out the blue bag to her," Take it, I trust you understand the importance of what's inside.." As he watched Jamie nod and take the bag a soft smile was on his maw. He patted her shoulder before turning towards the door," Come let's be off Jamie... There is no time on our side to look back fondly at this place."

He held the door open for her to make the first few steps out. There standing on the edge of the house was Damon and Stephen. A sour look on their maws as Stephen spoke," This isn't good the snow is coming down too fast... We've got to go now, we've got to get out now, the port is a mile away. Sadly we're gonna have to walk."

Damon rumbled as he turned to look back at James," We waited too long!" He was furious. His eyes moved to Jamie for a moment to make sure she was alright before turning back to look towards the snow. Then he snorted," I can't even breath fire in this cold!"

Jamie looked from the two lead males then back to her father. There was a soft swallow before they moved to head out. While they walked she took a look back at the house as it faded from view. She loved her old home, even though it was the worst place she had ever lived in. There was a sigh as she turned to look forwards, clutching the bag tight to her. There was another bag on her back, filled with the possessions she had valued most during her stay.

The further they had gotten away from the home she knew and loved for most of her life the more violent the snow was getting. It roared and billowed towards them as they pushed against it. The lake was lost from sight while they moved. A whimper came from Jamie's maw as the cold bit at her. She had now fallen behind her father, brother, and guide.

As they wandered towards their escape they had made it to the lake. Over the ice they went unaware. Step by step they moved over the ice, unable to tell that the ice beneath them was thinning slowly. The first to fall was Damon, then Stephen, and then Marcus. The three men were stunned by the seeping cold of the water that consumed them. Eyes widened, Damon sunk faster than expected, lost to the ice almost instantly.

Stephen sank almost as quickly as the dragon. A howl on his lips as he cried out," Oh god the ice! Jamie get away!" Then he was gone, swallowed by the ice.

James had turned to look at Jamie with widened eyes. His maw breathing cold air while the ice over took him. He shook his head and roared out lightly as his paw shot forwards," Jamie... I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" The water swallowed around him as the snow came, the water practically freezing over in seconds.

Jamie was stunned, tears freezing on her cheek as she stood there, alone. There was a roar from her maw while she slid forwards. Her talons moving rapidly over the ice while she looked for them. Shaking her head and sniffling to the cold she whimpered over and over, looking for her father, brother, and family friend. She couldn't see him or the others; she couldn't even get to them. Shaking her head she slammed balled fists onto the ice as she screamed.

Sucking in a breath she looked up towards the direction they were heading towards. Shaking her head she leapt up in sky. Wings spread out through the covering while she bit back tears. If she could get there fast enough, fast enough or she would lose them. If she could get help they might have a chance. Pushing forwards into the wind she fought to stay air born. Then a gust ripped down on her and she was thrown back. Screaming she came tumbling to the ground losing consciousness almost instantly. Her head lifted to look back at the lake one last time before she fell still, sealing her family and friend's fate.
