CHAPTER 1

Just a forenote, this is the story of how I found who I was and in doing so saved an entire race from the brink of extinction. In doing so, I had to leave everything I knew behind and start a completely new life... Kinda hard to imagine for a human, but...

A small note on this world...humans and furries coexist in relative harmony, about as harmonious as society can get with all the wackos that always eventually find their way into the higher offices. For six hundred years our democratic society lived in total peace with the rest of the world, but...something was missing. Long before our country came into existence, dragons dominated the land. No record tells of what happened to make them all disappear, but ever since then, a darkness has slowly crept into the world, and only just now are we beginning to notice as our country is slowly being controlled by ones who do not respect life and want to bring "community" values to our government...which will totally fuck us over in the long run, but everyone's so obssessed with short-term solutions that they're falling for these idiots. And apparently, it's because of people like these that dragons disappeared...but my story isn't about our country's slow downhill plunge...it's how I turned the tables starting with a simple "yes".

It started when I was about 10 or so. I was outside, playing with our new litter of tabby kittens as Mom and Dad bargained their prices. The neighborfox's dogs were barking at us through the fence, but I just barked back at them in their own tongue...or to a ten-year-old's mind at least; it was really just nonsensical mimicry. Mom called me inside, and as I stood up a kitten jumped at me and quickly scaled my pants and shirt up to my shoulder to play with my long locks. For a boy I had long hair, but that was a privilege for my family as craftspecies and pet-breeders. I couldn't help laughing at the little kitty on my shoulder and I walked inside with two others hanging off my shirt and the others batting at my shoes. Mom, Dad, and our guests laughed with me as I came inside adorned with kittens.

"They really like you don't they?" Mom asked, her long tail swaying slowly behind her with a slight curl at the end. In retrospect, she was a gorgeous shorthair calico, but what the hell kind of ten-year-old would find their mother hot? Not me at least, at that time I just liked her pretty colors. Being a cross-breed myself, I had peach-fuzz on my limbs, showing a very, very faint calico pattern, but as always, the human side was far more dominant, thanks to dad. My teeth were sharper and my ears were a tiny bit longer than with other human kids, but that just made eating and playing games that much easier. It was my faint catty appearance that spurred Dad's comment.

"Well, kittens play with kittens, right Tony?"

"Yeah Dad," I laughed in reply as the kitten on my shoulder nipped my ear. "All right little guy, get off!" I hissed and all six kittens flipped out and fell off me. Mom gave me a dark look.

"Tony, we told you, don't do that. We want the kittens well-behaved, not paranoid."

"Sorry..."

"It's fine...we'll take two for 50 each," one of our guests said. She was a pure human, rare in today's multicultural world, and the guy with her---who was apparently her husband---was a tall, wolfish guy with golden-brown fur typical of lycanthrope breeds. As his wife paid my parents, I felt him watching me as I fed the kittens, but I didn't pay much attention; the kittens were too cute to resist as they mewled hungrily.

That night the wolf-guy stopped by again on an invitation from my parents. Over dinner I learned that he and his wife were new in town, and had an adopted vixen-girl about my age, maybe four months younger. I wasn't very interested in girls...annoying creatures, always huddling together and giggling or playing with stupid dolls...gimme a big rain-puddle any day and I'm set. The wolf's wife was at home with the kittens and their daughter. After finishing the steak Dad had grilled for him, he sat back and his eyes fell on me.

"Tony, was it?"

"Yes, sir." I hated saying "sir" but I had to around Mom and Dad, under risk of a spanking. In retrospect, I have absolutely no idea why they banished corporal punishment towards children...nowadays there's no respect because parents can't do anything much. My parents scared me shitless...back then, when they had the power to do so, they held true on their threats of punishment. Mom cleared her throat at me and I sat up straight quickly, knowing full well how many days my ass would be red if I didn't.

"Tony, you like dragons?"

"Uh...yeah...sir."

"No need to call me 'sir', I hate that," he said with a laugh, and inside I sighed with relief. "I couldn't help but notice this is the second dragon shirt you've worn today."

"He's always been a fanatic about dragons," Dad said. "He draws them, collects models and books and pictures..."

The wolf nodded with a warm grin, and reached into the backpack he had by his chair. "Mind if he adds this to his collection? I got it for my daughter because she likes to read, and she wanted to give it to him. Says it's a really good read."

Mom nodded and he handed the book to me. I was excited by this and rather quickly snatched it from him, studying the dragon on the cover. He laughed at my reaction, bringing me to reality. "Thanks!"

"No problem. If you're bored you can come on over to our house and play with Amber, if your parents are okay with it?"

"Of course. His other friends are all off at camp."

"Too expensive?"

"Let's just say...'bad connections and relations'."

The three grownups laughed, but I was too busy looking at the fine detail of the book cover. Mom's cough snapped me back to the world. "Tony, hello?"

"Wha?"

"'What ma'am'," Dad corrected me, but Mom continued.

"I asked you, did you want to go to their house tomorrow?"

"Uhhhh..."

The wolf laughed a little. "Amber's one mean gamer, and I noticed you have a VirtuaPlayer..."

"What games does she have?" I asked nervously...probably girly fashion games or stupid horse-racing things...

"UltimaFighter 4, Legends and Dragons: Carsoma...Dragon Riders: Call of the Skies...." He and my parents laughed as my eyes almost popped out from my face. "She likes dragons too, she's a fanatic as well." Maybe girls weren't so bad after all...

That night, the book had me hooked. The author had it based very heavily in our country's history, even though he himself lived across the Tethyn Ocean...As the early hours of morning passed by I learned that dragons had been able to freely change their shape between three different forms: their natural state as four-legged lizards; anthropormorphic, walking on two legs and looking a lot like the rest of us, with or without wings depending on whether or not they felt like it; and what caught my interest the most was the furry state....apparently dragons had their own natural furry forms. They also had free control over a strange worldwide energy source everyone calls "magic", which flowed along interconnected "ley lines"... What intrigued me the most out of everything was that dragons had bred with other species as well, and that apparently anyone with dragon in their veins was a natural dragon. If one parent was a furry or human and the other had dragon's blood in them, the child was a dragon in nature with a furry form or human form inherited form their parents. Dragons were also connected to each other, supposedly along the "ley lines" but many assumed it to be some sort of telepathy. But, as I delved deeper into the book, amid the battles and the humor that at the time went right over my little head, I learned that the knowledge of draconic being, the knowledge of becoming a dragon if you had dragon blood, was lost over time, hindered and restricted by the government. Halfway into the last chapter, my eyes kept reading over one of the characters' lines... "If all dragons die, the world will enter a Power Age and life as we know it will change drastically...we cannot allow that to happen. We don't know what the results will be, but the planet itself will eventually disintegrate." His friend asked uncertainly, "How do you know all this?" "I don't. A seer-dragon told me on his deathbed. Our country will be the best in the world for many years, but corruption shall enter its highest levels and it will fall because of their political kissassing and lack of values. Then, dragons everywhere will be on the brink of extinction." Extinction...death...the end of the world... But, the last lines of the book caught my eyes before I drifted off. "Sir...will we ever see dragons again?" "Belief. It's the key to many locks. The locks of ignorance and fear and deception can be overcome by belief."

"Tony, do I need to bring the kittens in here?"

I snapped up and my head swam and I fell back onto my pillow, the sunlight from my window stinging my eyes. "Huh?"

"I'd let you sleep in today but it's too nice outside," Mom said, standing up from my bed after giving me a shake. "And you need to get ready to go to the Nacyl's today, remember?"

"Nacyl?"

"Amber and her parents, they bought the kittens from us?"

"Oh..." I couldn't help yawning and almost locked my jaw. I felt something by my pillow and found the book lying there.

"Up all night reading huh?"

"I think so..."

"Well, better get ready for the day, you can finish the book tonight." I laughed as she tickled my face with her tail, batting it away and sitting up. I was so glad it was the beginning of summer vacation...no school, no beating the crap out of human-bred bullies trying to be superior in the school...

In an hour I was washed, dressed, and had scarfed down the pancakes Mom had cooked...damn, you like pancakes, you haven't tasted ANYthing. Although, being a cat, Mom tended to overdo sweeteners because she herself can't taste them...all the better for me though. After breakfast, Mom gave me her usual face-licking with her rough but soft tongue...it was like a kiss but a bit longer and in more places on the face. "Mom...do you really hafta clean me like this?" I asked.

"Nah..." She ruffled my hair with her hand and smiled. "Have fun today."

I grabbed an apple and headed outside. The Nacyls lived not too far down the road, and luckily I didn't need to cross the road. Everyone was either at work or gone on vacation...the neighborhood seemed awfully empty. Except the house I was headed for. On the driveway was Mr. Nacyl and...my heart suddenly froze, though I didn't know why. There was a pretty fox-girl playing basketball with him, and he lifted her up and she dunked the ball through the hoop. I didn't know why, but suddenly my mind blanked when I saw her. They hadn't seen me, though, and I shook myself from my daze and approached. Mr. Nacyl's ears turned to me and he turned around and grinned.

"Tony! You're a bit early!" The little vixen by him shied a bit against his leg. "Tony, this is Amber. Amber, this is Tony from down the road. We bought the kittens from his parents yesterday."

"Hi," we both said at once, a little shy. Amber was a pretty little thing...she had red fur, fading to a tannish-white on her face and front and turning to a dark-brown on her hands and what I could see of her feet over her short socks. She had long, light-brown hair on her head, accentuated by bright blue eyes and large brown fox-ears. Behind her I saw her fluffy tail curl around her dad's tail. She cleared her throat and glanced at me nervously. "You...uhh...you wanna play a game or something?"

"Sure...what game?"

"Amber, why not show him Legends and Dragons? He likes dragons."

She smiled excitedly and nodded. "C'mon, I'll show you my game collection!" I was still a bit nervous being around a girl, but I followed her into her house and into her living room.

"Wow..." I gasped when I saw her videogame collection lined up in a glass-windowed video cabinet. She had at least twenty games, including the DragonFire Twilight trilogy.

I don't remember much immediately after that, except that within the first hour of facing each other in UltimaFighter 4 we were having the time of our lives, laughing and growling at each other and our characters' antics on the screen.

"Hey, no fair!"

"You walked right into that!"

"Walk into THIS!"

"NO! How did I fall for that?!

"Haha! HEY!!"

"Team up on him?"

"With pleasure." We both teamed up on the CPU that was trying to dice us, and sent him flying off the screen with a combined power move. Finally the match was over and I groaned when she came up as the victor again. "Once more, I'm gonna cream you!"

"You're gonna die!" she laughed, and the controllers cringed as we hammered away at each other on the screen. I'd played this game at my friend's house a week ago, and knew a few combos and some secret glitches, but she'd unlocked more characters and knew a few more tricks than I did. "Haha, judo landing for the win!" she said triumphantly as her character jumped off the floor on impact instead of lying there for dead.

"How do you do that?"

"Shield button just before they hit the ground." She then proceeded to knock me up into the air, and I secretly grinned...I let her go through on her combo, but just before hse could hit the fifth and final time I hit the shield and attack buttons at the same time and sent her flying with my aerial attack. "What the-?!" she asked in surprise as her character hit the stage hard and I knocked her clean off the edge of the screen. "What was that?"

"Glitch," I smirked. "After the fourth aerial hit, pressing the shield and attack buttons at once makes them instantly recover and attack with an aerial attack that also acts as a counter." She jumped off the respawn platform and we viciously battled. Just as the timer counted down to 0, we hit each other with power moves and went flying, and died at the exact same time. Our jaws dropped as we both came up in a tie.

"What...was that?!" she laughed.

"That was awesome, that's what it was!" I set the controller down and flexed my fingers. "Owww...man, my fingers hurt..."

"I can still keep going...wanna see Dragon Riders?" I nodded excitedly and she popped in the game. Two hours later her dad came in and got lunch cooking as I stared at the screen, loving what I was seeing as Amber's dragon spun through the air raining fireballs on an enemy campground. Amber paused the game just before the timer ended and grinned at me. "This is where two-player support comes in...you wanna try?"

"Yeah!" She handed me the other controller and unpaused the game. It went into a cutscene where her character jumped off the dragon she was controlling, and teamed up with another who had been fighting on the ground with his dragons. Her dad peeked in and laughed to himself when he found us totally absorbed in the game.

"Looks like you two are having fun..."

"Yeah dad," Amber replied, her tongue sticking out a bit as she tried to pull off a combo. I blasted an enemy with a spell and she punched me. "Hey, you should've saved that!"

"Why? My character charges mana with each hit!" With that I helped her pummel a thick-armored general.

"Well, when the boss-fight is over, lunch is ready."

"Okay," we both said.

Amber's mom came home later to find us outside playing one-on-one in basketball. Amber and I were too busy trying to keep the ball from each other and didn't really notice her until the ball bounced away from us and she caught it.

"Hi Tony!"

"Hey Mrs. Nacyl!" I caught the ball as she tossed it to me.

"You two having fun?"

"Yep!" She smiled and left us to our game, and after I creamed her 6 to 1 Amber brushed her hair out of her face and laughed.

"Well, I just got kicked...wanna go for a bike-ride around the neighborhood and show me around?"

"Yeah, I didn't bring my bike though..."

"Here, lemme go get mine and we'll walk to your house to get yours." Fifteen minutes later we were biking along the road and I was pointing out the various areas of importance.

"That's where Mrs. Noir lives," I said as we passed a tall, old house. "She's scary and very protective of her garden...don't ever lose anything in there, and if you do, get it back at night or she'll scream and yell for three days straight."

"Eek..."

"But here...here's the good house. Mr. Morgan always has something good baked 'cuz he loves cooking, and I'm almost a regular at his house. He makes THE best pumpkin pies you'll ever have. And along here...oh yeah, this is Jordan's house. He's at camp."

"What species is he?"

"Human-husky hybrid. Don't wrestle with him; he likes to bite. But in soccer, you know the position 'mad dog'? You need one, he's your dog. His parents want him to go for professional soccer."

Amber stared at his house oddly, as if looking through it, but she snapped out of it and followed me. The sun was setting between the houses by the time we'd circled the neighborhood and stopped at my house. A bit out of breath from our race home, Amber brushed her hair out of her face under her helmet and smiled at me.

"So...think we're friends?"

"Sure, why not?"

Her smile widened. "I've never really had a friend before..."

"There's always time for firsts." I held my fist out to her and she looked at me oddly. "You punch it; it's like a hello or goodbye."

She punched my fist and I cringed...holy crap what an arm! "Oops...not that hard, huh?"

"A light tap...usually does best."

"Sorry..."

"You know...you're a lot cooler than other girls."

"Really?"

"Yeah! You're good at videogames---the good games, you're not into all the girly fashion stuff...you like dragons..."

"Great minds think alike," she giggled. "Well...guess I'll get going..."

"See ya..." I watched her as she biked away down the road to her house. I kinda hoped I could see her tomorrow...

Not only did I see her the next day, but we played together almost every day that summer, even when my friends came home. Amber's parents bought us some paints to decorate the white walls of her room, and we had such a huge selection (red, yellow, blue, green, purple, black, and white) we painted a dragon stretching across her room...and then slathered each other until we came out dying with laughter and looking quite the eyesore to her amused parents. Luckily her parents were very good-natured about it and they let me shower in their bedroom bathroom while Amber took the other shower. She had it worse, though...our punishment was me having to brush her fur. And they let her use her claws on me. Yeah, guess how that went...I can assure you neither of us liked it. My parents found it hilarious. The summer flew by really quickly...I introduced Amber to my other friends but she and I hung out together more often. My friends had come back different from their normal selves...now they constantly went on hiking trips with each other, egging houses at night or even going so far as to toss water balloons at passing cars. Turns out "camp" was an unsupervised babysitting area and bad habits had boiled up and settled awfully fast. As a result my friendships kind of strained...Jordan was the most normal one and he would often join me and Amber in bike-rides around the neighborhood. Over those months I also acquired a new nickname courtesy of Amber... "Dragon", after a game in the nearby forest wherein I had played the part of a dragon chasing them through the woods and they had to sneak up on me and bring me into submission. After that, she called me "Dragon" whenever I accomplished something.

School started again...whoopdee-frickin'-doo. But I was pleased to find Amber was not only assigned the same bus I rode, she was also in my class. There were so many of us fifth-graders that we were split into three classes of 25 each. Co-ed basketball started early, and guess who signed up alongside me? Yup...Amber. The games flew by along with the schoolyear, and guess who made Most Valuable Male and Female Players? Amber "Flame" Nacyl and Tony "Dragon" Ralos.

Life was going pretty damn well...

Eight years passed by, laden with memories. Some were good: in the last game of the season two years ago I earned quite a reputation when every single one of my shots on the hoop were from the very far end of the court...and none missed. My mad shooting wiped the other team across the gym floor, 63 to 11, and the next thing I knew I had Amber tugging wildly on me in excitement, my neck caught in a deathgrip as she kept chanting "Dragon! Dragon!" and got the whole rest of the crowd to join in. And then my teammates tackled us both to the floor and my foot broke. The bittersweet taste of victory...but the pain was short-lived even though the rest of that year was spent in a cast and on crutches. That year was not only my best athletically, but academically too. Not to mention romantically...even though we were sixteen, Amber and I started going out on little dates. Nothing fancy...maybe a burger at the local joint or a little downtime in the woods. We tried to keep it a secret but...when you spend most of your time around another, and you're going to school with furries who have keen senses of smell...yeah. Word spread quickly.

Now here I was, six months past nineteen, candidate for salutitorian for my college year (Amber was in a five-way tie for valedictorian)...much to the disappointment of the coaches, the break in my foot, though healed, restricted my playing ability just enough that I wasn't much use in the more agressive college teams. I dropped out of that, still receiving grants from generous others who applauded my talent, and applied myself to art and...karate. For some reason, I couldn't play basketball, yet I could twist around on my bad foot with no pain while executing a spinning procession of roundhouse kicks. Not only that, but I found a new passion, along with Amber...swords. Or rather, weapons in general. Gimme a staff, sword, knife, whatever, anything other than a gun, I could whip your ass with it and leave you hanging on the drying rack for my midnight snack. Amber, though much less proficient, would spar with me with wooden swords I'd made one week in carpentry class.

I still haven't gotten to us...girls flirted around me not only for my talent, but hot damn, I was PlayFur material. Odd thing was, though...I wasn't quite as buff as my level of activity should've left me. I had spent that whole summer lifting weights and going to the gym with Amber so I could wield bigger weapons like polearms or battleaxes...nothing to show for the effort until you saw me whipping a 10-pound sword with one hand with frightening control. Doesn't sound like much but when you're in combat, even 5 pounds is heavy. Amber loved watching me spar with my classmates...and I loved watching her anytime. She'd developed into quite a gorgeous vixen, one of the primary girls guys would attempt to invite to proms or parties (but she only accepted invites from me, haha). Her fur had turned from the dull-red of childhood to a rich red-cinnamon color, and the dark parts of her extremities had darkened considerably, growing a fantastic silky sheen. Her tan face and frontal fur had turned a creamy white, and her hair had developed pretty curls towards the end, adding more luster to its deep golden color. She was maybe three or four inches under me, tall enough that she could comfortably rest her head on my shoulder when standing. "Perfect height", I think it's dubbed. She was relatively slim...and IMO sexy, and she knew it. She loved teasing me by coming in with some of her hair tied back in a ponytail, the rest tucked behind her large triangular ears and falling over her shoulders, wearing a tight shirt under her favorite denim jacket. For some reason I loved it when she had her hair done up like that... Everyone else knew she did it to tease me, but we didn't care when they cracked jokes about us. Amber continued calling me "Dragon" and it became a pet-name. And even now, nine years after receiving that book, I still read it at least once a month...dreaming of dragons... I so wanted to see one for real, the book was so believable. But...as the year progressed...

Disaster hit. My cousin's house was bombed by a crazed terrorist group claiming they were out to "wipe out the lizards". For five days after that my parents and I didn't leave our house...and Amber and her parents helped us with what we needed as we mourned our lost family. Amid the care, though, I noticed Amber seemed suddenly distracted and depressed...and she seemed to be avoiding me. I thought maybe it was something I had done, but even after presenting her with a few flowers or taking her out to dinner a few times she still kept unusually quiet. And it only worsened as news kept filtering in that a secret group with underground funding was making sweeps across the nation, randomly attacking various species without publically giving their reason. A new name floated among rumors...apparently the government had started "Project Dragonsearch" years ago and now was becoming more open. Many played it off as another stupid use of our national surplus...dragons didn't exist, what were they thinking, spending millions of dollars on a pointless project? But those ideas fell on deaf ears here...my old dreams of seeing dragons began to resurface. Amber, though...she became more distant and it bothered me. She would often zone out during our little agreed dragon-sketching time we'd set up a few years ago...and one night I finally had it as she stared out the window with nothing on her paper.

"Amber?"

She started, dropping her pencil. "Huh?"

"Are you okay?"

She slowly picked up her pencil, avoiding eye contact. We were situated in our little clubhouse built in the woods about a mile from home, with our bikes propped against the tree. "Yeah...I guess so...I'm just...I'm worried with everything going on..."

After some silence I closed my drawing pad and stood up, stretching. "You, uhh...you wanna go for a walk?"

"Sure..." She didn't really seem to care, and slipped down the rope ladder, leaving me to turn off the solar-powered light and close up behind her. Amber kept her eyes down and I could feel she was really struggling with something. Deep into the woods, I finally stopped and turned to her.

"Amber...something wrong?" I asked, seeing her eyes suddenly water and her chest heave.

"T-Tony...I c-can't...I can't play this game any longer!!" With that she ran off into the woods, crying, and I ran after her, worried and confused. I found her at the bank of the stream, crying into her black hands, and she started and whipped around when my hands fell on her back.

"Amber...please, what's wrong?"

She shook her head, not wanting to tell me, and struggled as I pulled her into a hug. "Tony, p-please..."

"Amber, I'm not letting you go running off and getting yourself killed out here. At least not until you tell me what's wrong."

She shook her head against me, and then buried her face against my collarbone. "I c-can't...it would ruin your life..."

"You're making my life worse by not telling me why you're upset."

She slowly calmed down and wiped her eyes, setting her face resolutely. "Tony...I...I'm a government spy."

I nodded, thinking she was playing a game with me. "And...?"

"I'm the last known dragon in the world, or one of them at least."

"Uh huh..."

"Stop the sarcasm!" she yelled, slapping my face and taking me completely by surprise. "I'm dead-serious! In order to save my pelt I joined Project Dragonsearch, hoping to find others and help save the race. You're...you're the only other one I've found..."

"Me?"

"Yes, stupid, you! You have the energy signature of a dragon! I've spent over nine years trying to get you to see it! I gave you that book, invited you over to play my favorite games, called you a dragon after those fights and games in school...are you that thick-headed?!"

I hoped she was joking, that maybe her sadness was making her delusional, but the look in her eyes blazed right into my soul and I knew she was telling the truth. "Wait...you're saying I...I have dragon blood in me?"

"Duh! That's why your cousins were killed, the government wants to wipe out dragons and bring on the Power Age!! Did school really fuck you over or what?!"

"Amber..."

"My foster parents did some research and located your family, and I knew I had to try to ease you into the belief in dragons. That's why I gave you the book, but obviously even after nine years you haven't learned a damn thing from it." She turned her back to me with a snort, sending a sharp pang of guilt ripping through my chest. I started petting her tail and she pulled it away from me, scooting away further. "Apparently all nine years of my efforts have been wasted on you..." She whimpered and buried her face in her hands, crying again. This was just downright killing me, seeing her so miserable.

"Amber...I'm sorry..."

"You should be!"

I sat behind her and hugged her, ignoring her ignoring me. "What do I need to do?"

"I can't ask you to do it now..."

"Why not?"

"It would mean throwing away everything you've ever known...I can't ask you to throw your life away and start over..."

"For you I'd do it in a heartbeat."

She stopped and looked at me, tears glistening in her fur. "What?"

"Now you're the dummy...haven't you seen it? Or have you been too focused on your government spying?"

"Seen what?"

"That I love you beyond all else. Tell me what I need to do and I'll do it, if not for saving dragons then just to satisfy you."

We just lay there in silence, my arms around her as she considered. I was ready to throw everything away to be with her... "All right," she sighed, a smile tugging at her mouth but she repressed it as she looked at me sternly. She couldn't contain herself though and flung herself at me, wrapping her arms around me in a tight squeeze. I could feel the sheer happiness from her as we lay there on the bank of the stream in a tight hug, and when she pulled back I could see a reciprocation of what I felt for her reflecting brightly in her eyes. I reached up and ran my hand through her red cheek-fur, loving the silky soft feeling of it, and she murred quietly. Her smile faded and I could tell she was blushing. "Tony, are you absolutely sure you want to join me? It means everything, the world you have known, will be shoved aside. You're willing to become society's enemy with me?"

"Only one word."

"What is it?"

"Yes."
