Dangers along the way
"Aren't we there yet?" a voice in Zeke's head complained.
"It's not even been a hour since we left the village..." he sighed. "Besides, get down from my head and walk on your own before you start complaining."
"But don't you see how busy I am protecting you from the sun? That's some serious work I'm doing here, so be more grateful" the little Zorua giggled.
Zeke answered with a laugh, patting the Pokemon's head "Sure Keir, how could I forget that. Keep up the efforts, you little lazy bum."
They both continued their way laughing loudly.
The path they followed wasn't more than a little forest trail, which was occasionally overgrown by the plant life and lighted by many rays of light, piercing the forest canopy.
But soon they stopped laughing, because a nearby bush rustled.
"Get ready!" Keir shouted, jumping off his trainer's head, growling towards the bush.
After another rustle a Venipede ran out of the bush. The bug Pokemon looked at the trainer and his Pokemon curiously, before it suddenly attacked with a poison sting.
Keir evaded the the attack with little effort and looked at his trainer "What about some commands to attack it? Or do you rather sit back and enjoy the show?"
"Oh right..." Zeke had to think for a moment, before he commanded "Keir use Fury Swipes!"
"Roger" the Pokemon answered, assaulting his opponent with sharp claws for several times.
As the attack finished, the Venipede rolled on its side, clearly unconscious.
"Well, that wasn't nearly as hard as I expected" Zeke stated. Looking at the unconscious Pokemon he asked "And what should we do with it now?"
"That's up to you, silly. You could either catch it or we just leave it behind" Keir suggested.
To his suprise, his trainer moved on without thinking about it for a second, leaving the unconscious Pokemon behind.
"So why didn't you catch it?" he wondered. "Wouldn't it be good to fill our team?"
"Maybe..." Zeke said. "But Venipede are quite creepy and I don't really want to make friends with something that aggressive."
The little Zorua sighed "You don't really expect wild Pokemon to just jump into your arms, asking to be your friend, do you? You always have to be ready for a little fight."
"But you became my friend without ever attacking me?" Zeke wondered.
"Well, that's because I was far from beeing wild when we met, so that doesn't count." Keir said while jumping on his trainer's head again.
They were moving on in silence for some time, when Zeke suddenly requested "Keir... would you mind telling me how you ended up with my aunt? I've been wondering for some time now, because you definetely don't come from this area. And now that you said you were far from beeing wild..."
"That's... well... I.... I don't.... want to talk about this..."The little Pokemon whimpered.
The trainer carefully picked the Pokemon from his head and gave it a gentle hug. "It's ok, you don't have to, but please know that whenever you need someone to talk, I will listen to you."
"T-thank you..." a tear escaped Keir's eyes "You don't know how much this means to me."
"Probably as much as you mean to me" Zeke replied, planting a soft kiss on his Pokemon's forehead, causing Keir to blush. "I know this is maybe a bit sudden, especially after knowing each other for just a short time, but I want you to know that I've never met someone like you. That's why I want to ask if you want to be my..."
Keir's face turned crimson red "My...?"
Zeke took a deep breath "... my best friend?"
The Pokemon laughed loudly and snuggled against the human's chest "Of course, silly. I'd be happy."
But their happy moment was soon interrupted by another rustling bush.
"Seems like you have some more work to do" Zeke laughed, placing his Pokemon on the ground.
"Let the fun begin!" Keir chuckled, dashing forward.

"Damn" Zeke exclaimed after a short glance into the sky "its already getting dark."
"It can't be helped" his little friend sighed. "Those pesky Venipedes have really slowed us down and the Whirlpede we just fought really put up a fight, I wonder how many of those things we've defeated."
"Sorry, I lost track after the first dozen of them" the human shrugged. "But I guess we should call it a day and find a safe place for the night" he suggested.
It didn't take them long to find a small clearing, just a few steps way from the trail and big enough for a bedroll and a small campfire.
After putting down his backpack, Zeke felt relieved. "I swear this thing must be heavier than me."
He started examining the contents of it. "Alright, here we have the bedroll... some spare clothes... a box of matches... and masses of berries. Guess we won't have to freeze or hunger tonight."
"I hope so, otherwise I'm going to eat you" Keir joked.
"Oh fearsome beast, please spare my life and help me get some firewood instead" Zeke laughed loudly while poking his friend.
Just a few minutes of effort later, they managed to make a little campfire surrounded by stones.
Zeke sat down in front of the fire, with Keir on his lap. He was piercing some Pecha berries with a stick, before holding them into the flame.
The Zorua's stomach rumbled and it was nearly drooling from the smell of the berries.
"Seems like someone's hungry" Zeke grinned, giving the first load of berries to his Pokemon, before cooking some for himself.
After they both were full, Zeke lied back on the ground and looked at the now dark sky, filled with bright stars. "This feels like a dream" he said. "Just yesterday I was still sneaking out of my village, trying to find wild Pokemon and drawing them. And now... now I'm lieing here under the beautiful stars, having my best friend and Pokemon with me. I'm free to go wherever I want to, with the whole world waiting in front of me... I don't belive life could be any better right now."
"But it could get worse pretty fast." Keir stated.
"That's not funny, Keir, Don't make such jokes..." The human replied.
"I'm not joking... here it comes!" the Zorua jumped up, growling at the nearby woods.
Now even Zeke recognized the crashing sound, coming closer to them. "What the...?"
In an explosion of branches and leaves a big red Pokemon burst into their little camp, letting out a fierce roar.
"A Scolipede!" Zeke exclaimed, crawling away from it, while Keir took a fighting stance.
"Can you really handle that thing?" the trainer worried.
"We'll see" the Zorua gulped.
"Alright, use Fury Swipes." Zeke ordered.
As Keir dashed forward, striking the target several times, it failed to have any visible effect on the wild Pokemon. In response, it simply tackled the smaller Pokemon, smashing it against a tree, where it collapsed, unable to move.
"Keir!" Zeke screamed, running to his wounded friend. He stopped between the Zorua and the Scolipede. "Get away from him" he shouted, holding his arms to the sides, attempting to stop the attacker no matter what.
"No... get away from here... leave me behind" a weak voice in his head told him.
Zeke shook his head, turning his head to face his friend.
"You are my best friend, there is no way I'd leave you behind now. I may be a walking failure most of the time, but I will protect you until my last breath."
Keir could see tears in his trainers eyes, but he was unable to move as the Scolipede attacked.
As the Poison Tail hit Zeke's hip, he heard a crushing sound. The attack sent the human flying into the bushes where he landed hard, air leaving his lungs.
As Zeke lied on the ground, his vision became shrouded in dark.
In his last moments, he heard his dear friend screaming, followed by a faint light reaching his eyes.
"Keir..." a weak whisper left his mouth, before he eventually passed out.

Seems like things get a bit painful for poor Zeke.
But at least he has a little Pokemon with a developing crush on him, even though he doesn't realize it yet... or does he? ;D
