A mare may be a mayor, but she is still a mare

The most recent chapter sees Ed attend an important meeting

I returned home early the following evening to find all three of my fiancées waiting for me.

'Oh, you ladies are a sight for sore eyes!' I said, dumping my luggage on the floor

'Rough trip darling?' Octavia asked from the couch where she and Milky were seated

'Very. That portal doesn't get any easier to go through. But, I got to meet Richard and register our marriage.'

'Honey, while you were gone, we managed to set a date that is agreeable to all of us.' Milky said.

'Excellent, when and where?' I asked, sitting down between her and Octavia

'It's in a fortnight and it's in Nutwood common.' Milky replied

I put my arms around the both of them, 'I'm so glad you're all here.' I looked over at Lightning, seated in my armchair. 'Come on over here, I've missed you too.'

'No thanks, I don't go for that mushy stuff.' she said, laying her head down on the seat, face half turned away from me

I sighed. She was still the same old Lightning Dust.

Later, we listened to the news on the radio.

"As more reports of mares finding themselves pregnant by human males come in, many are requesting that the stockpile of potion seized by police be made available to the public. Foremost amongst them is Lyra Heartstrings, the first mare to publicly announce her love for a human."

The audio then cut to some sort of rally, where the famous unicorn was addressing the crowd.

'All that my husband and I, and countless other families like ours are asking for, is the chance to share the joys of parenthood just like everypony else! In the human world, they have a philosophy that says that one man and one woman become one flesh, and the truth of that is that nine months after sex, sometimes a baby is born. That is what we ask for today! The chance to look down on a foal, and know that it is a sign that we love each other. I call upon the Princesses to release the stockpiled potion to doctors and to make more of it, so that any man who wants it can be dosed.'

At the point the gathered crowd cheered and clapped and the broadcast returned to the station where the reporter commented once more. "In response, Princess Celestia announced that she would be making an official announcement soon."

'Oh, I hope they do,' Octavia said with a hint of sadness in her voice, 'I'd hate to think that so few families like ours can be parents.'

'Don't worry my dear, I'm sure the Princesses will do the right thing.'

The rest of that evening passed like any other, and then arriving as by stealth, it was ten O'clock, announced by the chiming of the mantle-piece clock.

'I think I'll go to bed now, I have practice tomorrow.' Octavia said, getting to her hooves and stretching.

'I'll join you, I'm feeling rather tired.' Milky replied, likewise getting up

After the other two had headed to the bedroom, Lightning Dust remained with me in the living room. 'Well, I'm going to bed. Will you be joining us?' I asked, getting to my feet

'No, I've got a cloud set up outside.' the pegasus answered. Hopping over the back of the chair in her usual quickness, Lightning opened the nearby window with her hooves to let the cool evening breeze softly rustle her mane.

'All right then, I'll see you in the morning, I guess.' I said, turning and walking towards the door as Lightning flared her wings and took off into the moonlit night outside .

With my back turned away from the window I heard her abruptly call out 'Wait!' I looked over my shoulder, hand resting on the doorknob to see her flapping her wings to keep her in place outside the house.

'Come here for a moment.'

I took my hand off the doorknob and made my way over to her. 'What is it?' I asked, reaching the open widow she was hovering next to.

'This,' she said, before leaning toward me and kissing me

It was a passionate, romantic kiss, and I was surprised that she was capable of such tenderness. Even when it had ended there was a moment of lingering between our lips before contact was broken. 'I missed you so much while you were away.' she said in a soft whisper, as though it were a state secret, with her hooves stroking the sides of my face as she gazed into my eyes.

'I. . .I missed you too, dear heart.' I replied. Unlike the serene expression I made, my heart was beating as quickly as her wings were flapping to keep her in place. 'I had no idea you felt that way about me, though.'

'Of course I do!' she exclaimed as though it was obvious. 'I love you, dummy.'

'Lightning,' I said softly and stroked her cheek, 'I love you too, and I'm glad you finally admitted that you love me.'

'Yeah well. . . ' Lightning looked away looking bashful one moment but quickly eyed me in as aggressive a manner as she always had before her confession. 'If you tell anyone, I'll buck you in the nuts!' she replied, glaring at me to reinforce her threat.

I made the scout's salute with my right hand and replied, 'On my honour, I promise I won't breathe a word of it.'

'You'd better not.' She attempted to scowl, plainly showing her difficulty in showing a smile at how seriously I took her demand.

Unlike her of course I was all smiles at the moment.

'Come, come over here.' I said, heading for the couch

Looking over, I paused to see that she remained outside the window and beckoned her over with a gesturing head nod. After a moment's pause, the pegasus flew into the room once more and took to her hooves.

'Lightning, I know that it must have taken you a while to summon up the courage to say that.' I told her when she landed next to me on the couch's seat.

'While you were gone I had a talk with Milky and Octavia, and they reassured me that you really were a nice guy.' She replied with a coy glance

'I see. And what prompted that?'

She began quietly at first, looking ahead not at what was in front of her but the depths of her memories. 'When I was young - no more than a filly, really - there was this stallion. He was handsome and fearless. He seemed so kind, so gentle, as well as being a great flier! I thought he loved me, he told me so, and he treated me as though I were Celestia herself.'

By this point, she was sniffling, her tears were spilling freely, and she did nothing to hide them.

'By the time I found he was just stringing me along, I had already given him what he was after.'

'Your virginity.' I said softly, tears in my own eyes now as a number of darts struck my heart from seeing the proud Lightning recounting her past to me, opening up old wounds for my sake.

There was a silent pause as Lightning took a deep, shivering breath. 'Yes, I was a fool! From that day I swore never to let anyone get close to me, that I'd look out for myself only. And it worked, everypony soon learned to keep their distance. And stallions - well they buckled under my harshness and sought other mares.'

Hesitantly, I put my arm around her, and she snuggled up to me. 'But then you came along. You met my insults head on - in the bedroom with your fierce and strong passion and outside the bedroom by politely refusing to be cowed by me.'

'Well, you certainly were an enigma for me too.' I admitted, rubbing her ear between my forefinger and thumb. 'One moment you were cold, the next hot. You infuriated and intrigued me in equal measure.'

'That's what I was talking to the others about. I was worried that you were going to leave and never come back - even after what Milky said to me the day the news broke.'

'You were afraid of having to raise our foal alone, weren't you?' I asked, remembering her fearful outburst the day we found that I had made her pregnant.

'Yes.' Came her reply, half-mumbled and under her breath. Her breath caught in her throat when I laid my hand upon her belly - as yet betraying no sign of the life inside. She looked at me in mild bewilderment before following the length of my arm to where my hand remained. Softly and yet firmly, she placed her hoof atop it.

'I know this foal may put a halt to your aspirations, but I promise you won't be alone. And motherhood has its own rewards.' I told her, lightly stoking her fur with my fingers.

'You say that, but...I'm still scared.' she whispered back.

My fingers continued to lightly stroke her belly and her hoof traced the knuckles of my hand. Having her fully rest her head against me with my other hand, I knew the perfect poem that might soothe her mind. I spoke softly, in a whisper, this poem was for her ears and her ears alone as I began to recite the words:

'Germ of new life, whose powers expanding slow

For many a moon their full perfection wait,--

Haste, precious pledge of happy love, to go

Auspicious borne through life's mysterious gate.

What powers lie folded in thy curious frame,--

Senses from objects locked, and mind from thought!

How little canst thou guess thy lofty claim

To grasp at all the worlds the Almighty wrought!

And see, the genial season's warmth to share,

Fresh younglings shoot, and opening roses glow!

Swarms of new life exulting fill the air,--

Haste, infant bud of being, haste to blow!

For thee the nurse prepares her lulling songs,

The eager matrons count the lingering day;

But far the most thy anxious parent longs

On thy soft cheek a mother's kiss to lay.

She only asks to lay her burden down,

That her glad arms that burden may resume;

And nature's sharpest pangs her wishes crown,

That free thee living from thy living tomb.

She longs to fold to her maternal breast

Part of herself, yet to herself unknown;

To see and to salute the stranger guest,

Fed with her life through many a tedious moon.

Come, reap thy rich inheritance of love!

Bask in the fondness of a Mother's eye!

Nor wit nor eloquence her heart shall move

Like the first accents of thy feeble cry.

Haste, little captive, burst thy prison doors!

Launch on the living world, and spring to light!

Nature for thee displays her various stores,

Opens her thousand inlets of delight.

If charmed verse or muttered prayers had power,

With favouring spells to speed thee on thy way,

Anxious I'd bid my beads each passing hour,

Till thy wished smile thy mother's pangs o'erpay.'

She smiled faintly, nuzzling herself against my side. 'That's a beautiful poem. I really hope motherhood is as wonderful as they say it is. If so, I think I could give up being a Wonderbolt - at least for a while.' She added hastily

I chuckled inwardly from that last bit. I supposed she didn't want to appear to have gone "soft," even now. Feeling her fidget from side to side I let her sit up out of my grasp and watched her hurry over to the window.

'Well, goodnight I suppose.' I said with a grin, not at all astonished at her aloof behaviour.

'Goodnight.' she replied without looking to me, and flew out

A tingle rushed up my spine as my body began to register the chill that the night brought now that Lightning was no longer sitting next to me. Moving over to close the window I watched with great fondness the moonlit silhouette of Lightning above, gliding onto a tuft of cloud high above the ground.

Making sure to lock the frame shut, I went to my bedroom and stared at the window for a moment, an idea forming within my mind. As surreptitiously as I was able, I unlocked the bedroom window, leaving it shut and slid into bed, doing my best not to disturb Milky and Octavia.

When the first morning ray of sunlight shone on my face through a chink where the curtains didn't quite meet on the east facing window, I awoke to find Lightning had taken the unspoken invitation in the unlocked window. She was snuggled up to me and her face was the very picture of serene content, the shadow of a smile on her lips. I looked to my left and to my right, to see that both Milky and Octavia still slumbered. I lay my back down on the pillow, a wry smile on my face.

'You look happy this morning.' murmured Milky, eyes half open

'Yes, take a look who joined us last night.' I whispered back

'Oh, I am glad she's finally opening up to you.' she replied, sliding closer

At that moment, Lightning Dust opened her eyes, or rather her eye, as but one brilliant amber eye looked up at me blearily.

For a moment, the look of sleeping content stayed, and even grew at sight of me before she remembered her frosty, aloof persona and her visage became a mix of shock and embarrassment.

'Good morning, Lightning, I'm glad you joined us.' I said, stroking her hock with the hand of my left arm, which she must have slipped under as I slept.

'Quit it! I just came in here because it got cold last night.' she pouted irritably

'Of course, how silly of me to think otherwise.' I said, deciding to play along

To my right, Octavia groaned softly and then sat bolt upright, throwing off the covers.

'Quick! What time is it?' she cried, her mane wild and tangled, sleep crusted eyes wide with panic

I glanced at the alarm clock on the night stand on the left side of the bed, 'Six fifteen exactly dear.' I said soothingly

'Oh, good.' she said, and breathed a sigh of relief

I beckoned her over, and kissed her good morning.'Did you sleep all right, my love?' I asked

'What? Oh yes, no problems. Anyway, I'm going for a shower.'

She slid out of bed, and made her way to the bathroom

Milky yawned, and stretched rather theatrically, 'I've got to go milk myself, but once that's done I'll start breakfast.'

She gave me a quick peck on the cheek, and then made her way to the kitchen, where she kept the breast pump I had bought her.

Once the other two mares had gone, Lightning Dust looked around, as if she imagined we were being spied upon. Once she seemed convinced we were alone, she kissed me with incredible passion, and nuzzled up to me.

'Thanks for leaving the widow unlocked.' she whispered, blushing as bright as her mane.

'Don't mention it.' I said, running my fingers through that same fiery orange mane.

'I won't, and you'd better not either.' she said sternly, a slight smile on her face despite the warning tone in her voice

She squirmed under my arm, and I lifted it so she could get up.

'I'm going for a quick morning flight - stretch my wings and build up an appetite for breakfast.' she said, looking over her shoulder as she lazily flew to the window.

I scrunched my eyes shut as she flung open the curtains allowing the sunlight to stream in.

I opened my eyes just in time to catch a glimpse of her before she left. But then, with a gust of wind and a flash of colour, she had flown the coop. I got up and thanked my lucky stars that I was in a tall building as I was wearing only my birthday suit.

As I looked down at the cityscape, I let my mind wander, and began whistling the tune to "Love is the sweetest thing".

'Shower's free darling.' came Octavia's voice from beside me, snapping me out of my reverie

'Oh, right you are, I'll be very quick, tell Milky that you ladies may begin without me if you want.' I replied, striding over to where my toiletries were

One shower and breakfast later I was sitting at my desk writing to Michael, filling him in on what was going on and requesting that he agree to be my best man.Once done, I carefully folded the notepaper and picked up one of the invitations.

"You are cordially invited to witness the marriage of Milky Way & Octavia Trebleclef to Edmund Johnson" I read aloud.

Because Equestria was a matriarchal society, the convention was that mares married stallions, not the other way around, and therefore their names came first. Shaking my head slightly at the total reversal of gender order, I slipped the invitation into the envelope and sealed it shut.

I rolled back on my chair, and poked my head round the dividing wall into the main room where Milky, Lightning and Octavia were.

'I'm just popping down to the post office, do you ladies need anything?'

'No thank you dear.' Milky said, looking up from her bridal magazine

'I'm fine, thank you darling.' Octavia said, busily organising her sheets of music

'Actually, you can get me some Rye bread; - and some unsalted butter too!' called Lightning from the coffee table where she was reading a book on motherhood

I stood up, stretched my arms high and arched my back with a drawn out yawn. I then walked into the main room.

'Rye bread and unsalted butter, got it!' I replied, pulling on my coat

When I returned, I found myself the recipient of yet another visit from Ever Ring.

'So how can I be of service today?' I asked taking a seat in my armchair

'Our extra special heat service is finding a lot of customers. In fact we've had to put a limit on how many booking to be made, only four other gentlemen have been dosed, and we can't run you into the ground.'

'I heard that term on the radio last night, what do they mean by it?' I asked, frowning slightly

'I don't know, it's just what they're calling those who have been injected with the potion.'

'I can't say I like it, makes us sound like cattle or something. That aside, lets to business - what's the job?'

'You'll be going to Ponyville, starting this evening for two nights.'

'Oh, no! I can't do another skipper!' I said horrified at the prospect

'Don't panic Ed! She's not a skipper, you're just there for the first two days. That should be enough to "do the job" since you will be spending most of your time fucking.'

'Evey, why do I increasingly feel like a walking, talking sperm bank?' I asked wryly

'Haven't a clue, maybe you over think things?' she responded one brow raised

'Something has just occurred to me Evey.' I said, leaning forward, 'What about the resulting foal? Do I have to pay support for it?'

'Oh no - under the terms of engagement for this service, you're not obliged to be any more involved in the upbringing of the foal than you want to be. Gentlemen hired under these terms cannot be compelled to help raise the foal, nor is the mother obliged to allow you to be involved if she doesn't want you to be.'

'So who is the client?' I asked, slouching in resignation, satisfied by her answer

'She's the mayor of Ponyville.' Ever Ring replied, with a stern look

I had met the mayor of Ponyville briefly on a previous engagement in Ponyville. She was an older mare, middle-aged and with a grey mane which it was rumoured she dyed grey to seem more mature.

'I'll be on my best behaviour then, you have my word.' I said knowing that the mayor of even a small village like Ponyville was not somepony to offend by less than courteous behaviour.

Ever Ring nodded her satisfaction, 'I'm counting on you.' she replied with a glance at the clock. 'Ah! Is that the time already? I'm sorry Ed, but I must dash - lots to do today, I'm sure you understand.'

'Of course, don't let me hold you up.' I said, getting up and striding over to the door

Ever Ring stood up and bolted through the barely open door without saying goodbye.

'And don't worry about the job!' I called after her as she dashed down the corridor

No sooner had I resumed my seat than there came a knock on the door. I threw down my newspaper in mild annoyance and dragged myself to my feet. Opening the door, I was surprised to find myself face to face with a royal unicorn guard. Pure white, and in gleaming silver armour, they usually guarded the palace in Canterlot.

'Are you Edmund Johnson?' he asked gruffly, a taciturn expression on his face

'I am.' I replied, still in shock from his unexpected arrival

'Then I am here to give you this.' he responded, and he levitated a sealed scroll over to me.

'What is this?' I asked, examining it closely, and I saw the seal bore the royal crest of the sun and crescent moon of the dual monarchs and the smaller personal seal of Celestia.

'It is a summons from her Highness, Princess Celestia of Equestria for you to attend a meeting of great import three days hence.' replied the guard formally

'Okay then.' I managed to tell the waiting guard, who responded with a curt nod and turned and left.

I slowly closed the door and sat heavily in my armchair. I was numb with shock. Why me? Who was I that I would be summoned to an important meeting?

'What's the matter dear?' Milky asked as she entered the room, 'You look like you've just seen a ghost.'

'I've just received a summons from Princess Celestia for the day after I finish my assignment in Ponyville.' I told her, my voice hollow as I held up the still sealed scroll for her to see

'Go on my dear, open it.' she urged me, taking a seat on the ground next to me

Grasping the ends of the two ribbons I pulled them apart, breaking Celestia's seal first, then finally breaking the royal seal and unwrapping the ribbon from the scroll

I unfurled it to read the message

"Dear Mr Johnson,

I have asked that you attend a meeting where the possibility of making the potion devised by Duchess Emerald Chateau widely available will be discussed because I think that you, as possibly the first to become aware of its success in addition to your personal qualities would be best suited to aid in the decision-making process. You will be joined by professor Sparkhorn, and Dr Robert Winston, inventors of the combi-potion that you were injected with."

'Oh, Edmund, isn't that wonderful? You can go to the Princess and convince her to make the potion available!'

I frowned, 'I don't know about that, convincing Royalty is no easy task.' I replied doubtfully

'Oh come on darling, I'm sure you can do it.' Milky replied, her ears perking up

I smiled, my heart warmed by her conviction that I'd succeed.

'Maybe, I still don't know why she chose me though, I'm nothing special.'

She nuzzled my hand, and I cupped her face in reply 'I think you're someone very special.' she said solemnly

'Well then! With you behind me I cannot fail!' I said standing 'I suppose I'd better go and get ready now then.'

An hour later, I entered the living room to find all of my fiancées there. Octavia was seated on the couch, a serious expression on her face. Milky was next to her, looking nervous. Lightning was yet again on my armchair, and by contrast her gaze was rather fierce .

'Okay ladies, what's got you so upset?' I asked knowing immediately that something serious was afoot.

The three looked to each other, plainly trying to decide who would speak first.

After a moment's hesitation, Lightning flew over to me. 'It should be obvious! We're not happy that you're still working as a gentleman!' she punctuated her outburst with a few prods to the chest

I was dumbstruck at my own stupidity. How could I have not bothered to ask how they felt given the new situation? I glanced at Milky and Octavia. 'Is that true dears?' I asked, rubbing my chest where I'd been poked a little too hard

'It's just that we don't know how we feel about the prospect of you fathering foals outside of our family.' Octavia said as I approached them

I sat down on the floor between them and thought for a while, they meant the world to me and I'd do almost anything to make them happy.

I looked at each of them in turn before I spoke.'I'm sorry that I never asked you three how you felt, and if you feel that strongly about it, I'll hand in my notice after this job, but I want to assure you of something.'

I beckoned them over to join me on the floor. When they had gathered around me, I cleared my throat.

'I just want you to know I love each of you with all my heart, Other mares may borrow my body, but my heart and soul belong to you. Indeed, "One half of me is yours," I said and kissed Milky on her nose '...the other half yours." ' I continued, and tenderly stroked Octavia on the neck.

'And I haven't forgotten you, Lightning. Of your portion of my love, I say this, "Mine own, I would say;but if mine, then yours." I told her and stroked her muzzle. " And so all yours". ' I added, looking earnestly at my three loves.

'I will always love you and provide for you, and any other mare that may join our family, My bounty is as boundless as the sea, my love as deep; the more I give to thee, the more I have, for both are infinite.'

They looked stunned, unsure of how to proceed. The silence was stark, the tick of the clock seemed to crash against my eardrums as I awaited a response.

'Um girls? May...maybe we shouldn't ask him to quit after all? I mean it does seem a bit selfish.'Milky piped up in a voice barely above a whisper, her eyes downcast

Lightning clapped a hoof to her face, 'That's your problem! You're too kind.'

'I don't know Lightning Dust, she does have a point. Can we really ask him to give up his job? He has not asked me to give up my career, nor has he quashed your dreams of being a Wonderbolt.' Octavia put in, raising a hoof for emphasis

Lightning Dust crossed her forelegs with a frown, 'I guess not.' she grumbled, wings flapping lazily as as she hung a few feet off the floor

'Then it's settled, Edmund will continue working as a Gentleman.' Octavia said

'Fine, but you had better tell the Princess to make that potion available!' Lightning huffed, settling back on the armchair

'I will, you all have my oath, I will ask on your behalf.' I said seriously, getting to my feet.

I kissed each of them goodbye, and repeated my promise to pass on their petition to Celestia.

Ponyville in the evening was a remarkably peaceful place, not unlike the village of Nutwood, Milky Way's home town. The light of the half moon peeked over the horizon as I looked down at the crudely drawn map showing where to find the mayors house.

'Okay, I take the next left and it's the house with the blue shutters and a weathervane in the shape of a rooster.' I said to myself and folded the map before slipping it into my back pocket.

Having found the mayors house, I knocked on the solid wooden door and took a step back. Soon I heard hoof steps approach the door and come to a stop.

'Who is it?' called a high clear voice that recalled the ring of a bell, or the tinkling of crystal ware

'It's Dandyman, miss mayor!' I replied

I heard her fumbling at the latch and then with the scrape of metal on metal and the creak of wood the door swung inwards a fraction showing the nervous face of the mayor of Ponyville.

'C..come in please.' she stammered and stood back enough for me to slip in

She quickly looked left and right and then hurriedly closed the door and bolted it shut.

Now that I was inside, I began to notice a smell, very subtle but unmistakably the scent of a mare in heat. When I got a good look at her face, I saw how flushed she was, the tan fur of her cheeks had patches of red how on Earth does that happen?

'Madam mayor, you need not be nervous. I assure you nothing that you don't wish to happen will happen.' I said soothingly

'Nervous? Who's nervous?' she blurted out her chest visibly heaving

I knelt down and placed one hand gently on her cheek and she shivered at my touch. 'Just try to relax, and let me know what you want.'

She took a deep breath before looking up at me. 'I'd like you to take me to my bedroom, and put a foal in me.'

I blinked for a few seconds, a flat "what" echoed in my mind, I certainly wasn't expecting a mare like her to be so. . .blunt.

'That's what I'm here for!' I smiled as broadly as I could without showing teeth

I was determined to deliver exactly what the customer wanted, even if in this case it was in the face of frank honesty, that I found rather shocking.

'Right...right this way.' she said, and I noticed the scent of her arousal get much more potent. Already I could feel my own arousal growing.

As I followed her, I gently stroked her rump, amping up her anticipation.

'In here.' she gasped, as I ran one finger along her remarkably firm right haunch

I entered her bedroom in the middle of the far wall was a large four-poster bed with crimson hangings trimmed with golden thread. Not wanting to keep her waiting any longer, I quickly began to strip.

She was enraptured, her eyes widened as each item of clothing came off.

'Oh my!' she exclaimed when I was in just my boxers, my erection a visible bulge, reaching the waistband.

When I slid my boxers down, freeing my member from its confines, she let out a gasp and stared intently.

I gestured to her bed, 'Shall we start?'

She shook her head, as if trying to shake off an irksome fly. 'Oh, yes please, lets!' she said with a girlish giggle

I climbed onto the bed and she did so as well, turning around slight distance in front of me and presenting herself to me. I watched as her swollen clit periodically poked out as her vagina contracted with desire.

I looked enquiringly at her face and it was full of longing and so I slid myself into her.

She was not young, that was clear, but her silky smooth passage massaged me and eagerly accepted my intrusion.

'Oh my, yes!' she gasped as I hilted myself and she pushed back against me

I slowly pulled back, fighting her resisting muscles all the way and then pushed back in.

The mayor let out a low moan of pleasure as my cock filled her once more.

'Are you ready? I'm going to start moving faster now.'

'Mmm,mm' she replied, biting her bottom lip in ecstasy

So I began building up a rhythm, alternating between hard and soft thrusts, first going fast, and then slowing down.

Her moans became louder and her breathing shallower and I knew she was close to her release and not a moment too soon either. To speed her up, I reached under her and teased one of her nipples

Her eyes, which had hitherto been closed in pleasure flew open with a gasp.

'Oh no, no please, I'm goint to...I'm going to...' she panted, but the rest of her sentence was lost to a long drawn out moan, and with her whole body shaking, she came and I felt a splash of liquid squirt out around my cock onto my lower stomach and thighs as her vagina convulsed powerfully. With an inarticulate series of grunts, I came too, blasting my fertile human seed into her womb where hopefully it would meet her egg or eggs and create a foal or two.

For a few moments, we were both lost in the afterglow, and I was unable to move as I was caught in her velvet lined vice. Eventually though I slipped free, and lay on the bed next to her.

'That...that was wonderful!' she gasped, blushing

'Was this your first time with a human?' I asked, propping myself up on an elbow

She nodded shyly, 'Yes, you see as mayor I have very little time to socialize freely so an acquaintance of mine suggested I hire a Gentleman.'

I reached over and brushed a stray hair out of her face, tucking it behind her ear.

She blushed more, and one ear flopped down in embarrassment.

'I'm glad it was an enjoyable experience, but - if you'll pardon my asking why pay for a foaling?'

She looked downcast at my question, her face going bright red, and her eyes fixed on the mattress.

'I'm sorry, I ought not to have asked, not my place.' I said quickly

'No, it's okay. The truth is I spent most of my life studying, working and campaigning. I never had much time or success in settling down and raising a family. But I know my biological clock is ticking and I dearly want a foal of my own.'

I nodded sympathetically, 'I can understand that, it is natural for women to want to have children. And hopefully I can make your desire come true.'

And indeed when I left her house to attend the meeting in Canterlot, she was convinced she was with foal.

I reached the main gate of the castle, where I was stopped by the sentries.

'State your business!' one barked as he and his partner blocked my path with their spears.

'My name is Edmund Johnson, I have been summoned to an important meeting by her Highness.' I replied and produced the scroll

He inspected it for a moment then nodded curtly to his comrade and the spears were withdrawn

I sat passively listening to Doctor Winston explaining the basics of how the potion worked. The high domed room that I had been ushered into had tapestries hanging on the walls, and a large archway leading to a large balcony. All these were rather more attention grabbing than any jargon heavy speech.

'When our peoples first began learning about each other, we were astonished to discover that humans and ponies not only had the same number of chromosomes, but shared the same fundamental DNA. This fact seemed to be a verification of the theory that our two universes have always - to some degree been in contact, perhaps even springing from the same source. The main obstacle to interbreeding has been that the enzymes that humans and ponies have do not match, meaning that human spermatozoa are not "recognized" by pony eggs. Doctor, and Lord Winston's voice continued, as I re-focussed on the meeting.

However, as professor Sparkhorn will explain, we found a way around that.

The Unicorn cleared his throat, 'Your Highness will be aware of the maternity potion of Star Swirl the bearded?'

Celestia nodded 'Yes, primarily made from the leaves of the verdandris plant and the juice of the clovis mango, correct?'

'Quite so you Highness. It is widely used by mares who have had difficulty conceiving. It has magical properties which boost a mares receptivity to sperm. The Duchess believed that coupled with human medical knowledge I could improve upon it to allow cross-fertilization. Of course I could never hope to better such a powerful potion, but I did have a spell I had been theorising on for these past four years.'

'What kind of spell?' I asked, leaning forward in my seat

'A spell that would allow a human male to produce enzymes that would be able to break through the extracellular matrix of a mares egg.' he said, placing his hooves together and regarding me earnestly in an eerily good impression of Gendo Ikari.

'You see Mr Johnson, in humans, when a sperm meets an egg, the zona glycoprotein, ZP3 adheres to proteins on the sperm plasma membrane. Once this has happened, the Acrosome dissolves the membrane facilitating the cortical reaction - fertilisation. Until now the difference in pony receptors and human proteins stopped the two from bonding. What the professors' spell does is make men like yourself also produce pony proteins with your sperm - or rather an emulation, to allow bonding.'

Doctor Winston added helpfully, with a half glance at his former co-worker

Even with all the medical jargon, or perhaps because of it, I didn't understand much of what he had said, and perhaps I missed something important, so decided to ask for more information.

'Wait just a second, are you telling me it took all those months to make a fertility potion and perfect a spell?' I asked, leaning back in my chair

'Yes, try as we might we could not succeed. We first had to find a solution capable of suspending the spell in it, only then could we proceed. For months we tried, finally we had but one batch worth of Verdandris leaves. They were bone dry, and none were to be arriving for a week so we used them. To our surprise it worked! We ran some tests, and it seems the active ingredient becomes more potent when dry.'

Celestia nodded thoughtfully, 'What are your predictions for the resulting foals?

'We cannot say for sure, but we predict that the foals will not look too dissimilar to any other. Save for a few minor differences. Of course the foals will take after their mother in that whatever type of pony she is, the foal will be also.'

'And the foals, do you have any estimates on the gender ratio?' I sat up at this question, why is Celestia interested in that? I thought, but held my tongue, now wasn't the time or place to question her enquiries.

'Your Highness, with all the tests, it seems likely that the ratio of colts to fillies will even out by ten per cent at the most.' Doctor Winston replied

'Well then, now that we know how the potion works, perhaps we might hear of the experience of it's effects?' Celestia said with a nod in my direction

I stood up and cleared my throat, 'The first thing I noticed that was different was that I not only could I smell a mares' heat, but it had the same, or at least a similar effect that I am told it has on stallions. The rational part of my brain was all but obliterated by the desire to mate. My stamina was much greater, and I am sure that my seminal load was increased as well. Of course, I merely thought it due in part to the rest I enjoyed after my hospitalisation and the fact I've always had a sensitive nose. But now that I reflect on it I surely must have been around mares in heat before, and even a good rest cannot have accounted for such abilities.'

Here, doctor Winston cut in, 'Hospitalisation, Mr Johnson?'

'Yes, there was a delay between the dosage and being discovered. I was kept in a coma until they could be sure no damage had been done to my organs.'

'Hmm, perhaps the delay strengthened it's effects? Or perhaps you had a reaction to it that others didn't.'

'Anyway, When I found that I had made three mares pregnant, I was a little shocked, but now I'm very happy, and so are they. I love all three of them, with all my heart, and all my soul. I never imagined that I'd fall in love with one pony, let alone three! But love is ungovernable, you cannot reason with it."Love is a spirit all compact of fire, not gross to sink, but light, and will aspire". They have asked me to let you know that they implore you Highness and your sister to allow others to share in the joy that we feel knowing that we have our own foals. And I add my voice to the plea of so many others, Make the potion available! For my part, knowing that I'm a father fills me with joy like no other. I don't care what my children look like, I will love them just the same, and I know that if I were denied the chance to feel this joy, I'd be crushed, perhaps angry too. What's more, this is a golden opportunity for our two species! Two worlds, one family, with ponies of mixed heritage, a lasting alliance can be made, and if the doctor and the professor are correct, the gender imbalance can be decreased.'

Celestia looked pensively out of the window for a long while, and we sat in silence, awaiting her response.

'Thank you gentleman for your input, I will confer with my sister and make a decision soon, please head to the great hall where we will take our afternoon repast, I shall join you shortly.'

I stood with the others, 'Your Highness.' I said with a bow

I was making my way out of the opened double doors when Celestia called out to me.

'Mr Johnson, may we talk in private?' Celestia asked as I made to leave the hall

'Of course, your Highness.' I replied, turning around and walking over to her

'I want to thank you for coming, your input was both touching and profound.' she told me as we stepped onto the balcony

Her face was pensive as she gazed down on Canterlot and the distant village of Ponyville

'It was my pleasure, but...' I hesitated, wondering if I ought to proceed. 'Forgive me if I'm overstepping my bounds, but I think that perhaps you are weighing up your options, trying to decide what choice to make. And it is no light matter either.'

She lowered her head slightly, and turned her face to me. Her usual composed expression had given way to one of deep concern.

'Yes, If I refuse to allow the potion to be used, my subjects will continue in their sadness, but If I do allow it I worry what will happen to my kingdom.

'Your Highness, once again I must beg your pardon, but is there not a personal stake in this matter?'

She looked shocked, 'How could you tell?' she whispered

'Just a deduction based on your tone and body language. In my profession, it helps to have knowledge of when information is being held back.' I said, stepping up beside her

'It is true, this potion represents hope for me, but a grave risk for Equestria.'

'How so?'

'You may have noticed that there are no male Alicorns, and there is a reason for that. Many millennia ago, there were many more Alicorns - oh we were still few in number, but we were enough. But then, a nameless being of untold power laid a curse on all Alicorns.'

'What sort of curse?' I asked

The exact words were "May you breed no more in all ponykind! May never a colt-foal Alicorn be born from this day forth! I curse all Alicorns to ruination!". From that day Alicorns were weakened, we became more vulnerable to sickness and wounds and we never again had a single colt between ourselves. As our few stallions fell to war or sickness we mares tried breeding with unicorns and Pegasi - to no avail.'

'So you think that perhaps there is a loophole, a flaw in the curse that you can exploit?'

She smiled faintly, 'Yes, "in all ponykind" suggests that the curse prevents successful breeding only with other ponies. Perhaps if my sister or I were to mate with a human after he had been dosed we may once again see the birth of an Alicorn colt?'

I crossed my arms and thought for a moment before speaking. 'So what is it you fear?' I asked looking to her

'I fear that if I am correct, I may bring great danger to Equestria. For the birth of another Alicorn - and especially a colt would be a great threat that the enemy would try to prevent. So you see? I am torn between my own desire to become a mother, the chance to bring more Alicorns into this world and the duty to protect my people.'

I sighed, 'Tell me your Highness, when did you last let your heart decide? I mean free of all other concerns, when did you allow yourself to do what you wanted? Your people love you, and will not begrudge you the chance to be a mother, whatever betide.'

'So what would you have me do?' she asked softly

I looked into her mournful, plaintive face and shrugged my shoulders

I had my own doubts and fears, but here Celestia, a millennia old, incredibly wise person was asking my advice, and I could not fail her.

'I think that sometimes, if the pay-off of success is high enough, that taking a big risk is a good option to take. Plan, your Highness, if there is a man you love, tell him so and then see if he is willing to be dosed. Failing that, find a man you trust or admire and do likewise. Then put your theory into practice upon your next cycle. If you are right, quietly increase your military - call in aid from Earth if you think it wise.'

'And what of you? I sense that you are perhaps troubled also.' she returned

'I am a little, yes.' I replied with a sigh

'Care to share it with me?' Celestia asked, once more the attentive ruler. When she was speaking to you it seemed like you and your concerns were the most important thing to her, no matter how petty they may be.

'As you know, I have three fiancées and I love them all equally. In different ways, but in equal measure. But..' I trailed off - not able to find the right words

'Go on,' she encouraged me gently, with a kind look. Oh,to gaze into that face was to be put at ease, and I felt immeasurably calmer as I gazed into her cerulean eyes.

I leaned on the marble rail of the balcony before continuing, 'Sometimes I feel like a fraud. I may have an ocean of love, but I cannot express it well in my own words, so I pilfer the words of others. I quote poems, and songs because I cannot come up with my own.' I hung my head in embarrassment

'As long as the emotions causing you to speak those words are from your heart, does it truly matter who wrote them?'

I looked up, 'I suppose not.' I said softly, with a faint smile

She smiled warmly, 'You see, you're not a fraud at all.'

I returned her smile, 'Thank you, your Highness.' I said with a slight bow

She chuckled at my deference, 'And thank you, Mr Johnson. I think I know now what I must do.'
