The ledges of granite were firm under paw as my fingers grasped their jagged surfaces. Boots held steady on small rock footholds as I squeezed myself as close as I possibly could the cliff's face. I was panting, muscles aching as the last couple of feet were within my sight before I could pull myself to safety. I had passed the minimal safe distance quite a while back, but I wanted to have a good show for when the fireworks went off.

Without an escort team or any sort of automatized support I was able to slip in and out of the enemy base without the slightest bit of detection, though I did have to dispatch two personnel by paw, no doubt they were on full alert now. I wasn't even allowed to have a gun or knife! SCAR command was afraid that if I was allowed externals on this mission that I'd be weighed down. I didn't complain and my job was completed nonetheless cleaner.

I grasped the cliff edge and hauled myself across its rough surface, stomach dragging against rough gravel and loose vegetation. When my knees passed the ledge I turned over on my tail and sat there to regain my breath. The constant marathon over desert terrain was enough to make my muscle so soar it felt like I was back in rough training among the other youth of SCAR. I glanced skyward to the clear blue heavens, barely a cloud around, not a sound stirring. I waited a minute for my full composure to be reached before I heaved myself up to my feet. I glanced out across the tan landscape, littered with sand blasted rocks and near smooth expanses of sand. Without any specialized equipment nobody would have been able to detect the long lost base that resided among the jutting boulders.

My paws slid down into the pockets of my pure white shorts, my right pulling out a pair of specialized sunglasses while the other pulled out a teardrop shaped device with a central red button on it. I unfolded the temples and placed them on my ears, still watching the vibrant horizon. As soon as the lenses came down over my eyes everything was turned to night, barely anything visible. I still held the sunglasses with my thumb and forefinger while my left paw raised into the air and far out to my side. I couldn't hide a grin that drew across my muzzle as I felt electricity course through my form. I didn't hesitate for a second, and as soon as I was ready my thumb fell upon the button.

For a solid second the air stopped and the desert was silent. Nothing moved.

A light as bright as the sun flashed into existence, bathing the area in a light so brilliant it would have cooked my eyes in their sockets had I been without my sunglasses. The silence continued beyond the explosion, the massive ball of fire growing high into the sky as it sucked in the surrounding air. The ground began to shake and in the distance I could see a rolling shell of force wrecking apart the far terrain. I braced myself just a moment before the shock wave hit my perch in a fury that nearly lifted me from my feet and tore the ground apart beneath me. I stumbled back and gritted my teeth, but my eyes never left the growing fiery expanse. The still expanding blast grew a mushroomed top and became significantly more skinny at its midpoint while the snarling ember stayed alive in its massive stomach.

I let out an excited howl, barely registrable next to the backdrop of the lonely, now desolate landscape. The nuclear explosion would have been more than enough to turn anyone inside of the compound to ash before they knew what was happening. Any other flora or fauna beyond that would have been cooked to a crisp mere moments later. I was just far enough away for the magnificent heat nor the crushing devastation of its roar to have hurt me, yet close enough to enjoy the fruits of my personal handiwork.
